Inspiration & Hope / Re: That phone call of phone calls
September 03, 2013, 09:36:29 AM
Stefano earlier wrote the pontiff describing his hopes. It was the second call from the Pope. He could not reach Stefano on the first attempt because the student was out. Pope Francis told him to refer to him with the informal “tu.” “Do you think the Apostles would have called Christ your excellency? They were friends, just as you and I are now, and with friends I’m accustomed to using ‘tu’.”

Senators respond to pork abolition calls

“We cannot ignore the sentiments of our people,” Senate President Franklin Drilon said at the Senate budget meeting Tuesday amid mounting anger over the pork barrel scam. President Benigno Aquino III has called for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) which has been at the discretion of lawmakers. Here’s what senators have to say on the matter:

Upon Binay’s request, the President also assigned the Vice President his own official residence-office, which is the Coconut Palace built by former first lady and now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez Marcos during martial law.

In the past, the vice president did not have his pork barrel and official residence. Broadcaster and former senator Noli de Castro, who was vice president during the Arroyo administration, did not enjoy those perks.

De Castro’s annual budget was only P180.5 million in 2009 and P185 million in 2010, when he finished his six-year term as vice president.

PDAF is the official name of the congressional pork barrel.

Binay has expressed willingness to give up his annual project allotment of P200 million if it is treated as PDAF. But he prefers to call it a “social fund,” similar to Malacañang’s President’s Social Fund.

The Binays have a combined P470 million in annual pork barrel funds. Binay’s elder daughter Nancy is allocated P200 million as a senator, while younger daughter Abigail, who is representative of Makati’s second district, has P70 million at her disposal.

Congress started giving the Vice President his own pork barrel shortly after he and President Aquino assumed office in 2010. Aquino offered him the unused portion of his PDAF allocation for that year.

Binay keeps P200-M pork barrel in 2014

By Jess Diaz (The Philippine Star)
September 1, 2013

MANILA, Philippines - Like senators and congressmen, Vice President Jejomar Binay will get to keep his pork barrel next year.

The proposed P417.3-million 2014 budget for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) includes P200 million which “shall be used to fund the programs and projects identified by the Vice President.”

Binay will have nearly P70 million for subsidies and donations on top of his pork.

The proposed budget law states that half of Binay’s P200 million “shall be used for education, health, social protection, and /or tourism programs and projects,” while the other half would be for infrastructure projects.

coconut polisher

Da Coconut Nut

by Smokey Mountain

The coconut nut is a giant nut
If you eat too much, you'll get very fat
Now, the coconut nut is a big, big nut
But its delicious nut is not a nut

It's the coco fruit (it's the coco fruit)
Of the coco tree (of the coco tree)
From the coco palm family

There are so many uses of the coconut tree
You can build a big house for the family
All you need is to find a coconut man
If he catch the tree, he gets the fruit free

The coconut bark for the kitchen floor
If you save some of it, you can build the door
Now, the coconut trunk, do not throw this junk
If you save some of it, you'll have a second floor

The coconut wood is very good
It can stand 20 years if you pray it would
Now, the coconut fruit, to tell you the truth
You can throw it or use it as firewood

The coconut leaves could shade it gives
For the roof, for the walls up against the eaves
Now, the coconut fruit, say my relatives
Make good cannonballs up against the eaves

Olé!

By the end, Heaney had acquired a reputation not only for cleverness but for wisdom, a poet who took seriously his role (he called it "a vocation") and was prepared to engage with the real world in work that was accessible and approachable.

And he had readers in high places. Nine days before the announcement that he had won the Nobel Prize, President Bill Clinton, no less, at a state banquet in Dublin Castle quoted the closing lines from The Cure At Troy, as Northern Ireland crept tentatively towards peace:

Now it's high watermark

And floodtide in the heart

And time to go...

What's left to say?

Suspect too much sweet talk

But never close your mind.

It was a fortunate wind

That blew me here. I leave

Half-ready to believe

That a crippled trust might walk

And the half-true rhyme is love.

His international reputation was sealed when in 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize, "for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past", in the words of the Nobel citation.

He continued writing, and further honours followed. In 1996 he won the Whitbread Prize for his translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. In 2009, he was awarded the £40,000 David Cohen Prize by Arts Council England for a lifetime's achievement.

District and Circle, published in 2006, won the TS Eliot Prize for poetry. The critics were struck by the title poem, about a journey on the London Underground in the wake of the 7 July bombings, which also evoked the medieval Italian poet Dante's vision of hell in his Inferno.

It was characteristic of Heaney who, as well as being a farmer's boy, was also exceedingly bookish and erudite.

'Everyday miracles'

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Heaney's reputation grew steadily. It helped that he was prepared to talk readily about his work, unlike many poets; and that he was a genial fellow capable of self-mockery and at ease in public.

He was known irreverently in some quarters as "famous Seamus".

His work became more "public" too: He joined the board of an Irish theatre company, Field Day, founded by the dramatist Brian Friel and the actor Stephen Rea, and in 1990 the company produced The Cure at Troy, Heaney's translation of Sophocles' tragedy Philoctetes.

He was a bright boy: At the age of 12 he was sent on a scholarship to St Columb's College in Derry and studied for a degree in English at Queen's University in Belfast.

He became a schoolteacher, then a lecturer, at Queen's and later head of English at Carysfort College, a teacher training college near Dublin.

For more than 20 years from 1985 he spent part of each year at Harvard as a visiting professor and later Boylston professor of rhetoric and oratory, and then as poet in residence. From 1989 to 1994 he was professor of poetry at Oxford.

Born on 13 April, 1939, on a family farm in the rural heart of County Londonderry, he never forgot the world he came from. "I loved the dark drop, the trapped sky, the smells / Of waterweed, fungus and dank moss," he recalled in Personal Helicon.

He was a translator, broadcaster and prose writer of distinction, but his poetry was his most remarkable achievement, for its range, its consistent quality and its impact on readers: Love poems, epic poems, poems about memory and the past, poems about conflict and civil strife, poems about the natural world, poems addressed to friends, poems that found significance in the everyday or delighted in the possibilities of the English language.

The very first poem in his first major collection was called Digging, and it described his father digging potatoes and his grandfather digging turf. It ended:

But I've no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb

The squat pen rests.

I'll dig with it.

Peat bog in Ireland
His roots lay deep in the Irish countryside

It proved to be his manifesto. He spent a lifetime digging with his pen, but returned often in his poetry to the landscape and society of his boyhood in a countryside of farms and small towns, where Protestant and Catholic rubbed along tolerably, if warily, and one of his earliest memories was listening to the shipping forecast on the BBC.

Obituary: Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney was internationally recognised as the greatest Irish poet since WB Yeats. Like Yeats, he won the Nobel Prize for literature and, like Yeats, his reputation and influence spread far beyond literary circles.

Heaney's poetry was always accessible and approachable

Born in Northern Ireland, he was a Catholic and nationalist who chose to live in the South. "Be advised, my passport's green / No glass of ours was ever raised / To toast the Queen," he once wrote.

He came under pressure to take sides during the 25 years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and faced criticism for his perceived ambivalence to republican violence, but he never allowed himself to be co-opted as a spokesman for violent extremism.

His writing addressed the conflict, however, often seeking to put it in a wider historical context. The poet also penned elegies to friends and acquaintances who died in the violence.

Describing his reticence to become a "spokesman" for the Troubles, Heaney once said he had "an early warning system telling me to get back inside my own head".

under republic act 8485, the strongest punishment animal abusers could face are a P5,000 fine and two years in jail, while the lowest is a P1,000 fine and six months in jail.  with the new law (house bill 6893) the maximum penalty would be a P250,000 fine, with a corresponding three-year jail term, and a minimum of P30,000 fine and six months imprisonment.

is she really this girl?  i can't make her out because she seems to look different in her other pictures.  and this particular one didn't appear in our local releases.  also, the currency in the bath tub with her looks like euros.  not that they're not capable of having euros, but if this image were true and not posed by someone else, this seals the napoles's fate in terms of insult to the nation.

10 Cats Even Grumpier Than Grumpy Cat

By Daniel Zeevi | Feb 02, 2013

We've all seen photos of grumpy cat by now and wish she'd cheer up some day but she's not the only sourpuss on the block. Cats are very peculiar animals with certain daily rituals that need to be administered to and never interfered with. From unwanted costumes and petting, to poorly cooked food and rival dogs, here are 10 cats with such bad attitudes they would even give grumpy cat herself something to cheer about!

The investigation looked at data from the Nurses' Health Study, which ran from 1984-2008; the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009); and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2008).

Ten kinds of fruit were used in the questionnaire: grapes or raisins; peach, plums or apricots; prunes; bananas; cantaloupe melon; apples or pears; oranges; grapefruit; strawberries; and blueberries.

The fruit juices identified in the questionnaire were apple, orange, grapefruit and "other."

"For example, fruit juices lead to more rapid and larger changes in serum [blood] levels of glucose and insulin than whole fruits."

The study also points to evidence that some kinds of fruit have a beneficial effect for health.

Berries and grapes, for instance, have compounds called anthocyanins which have been found to lower the risk of heart attacks.

But, say the authors, how or even whether this also applies to diabetes risks is for now unclear.

Swapping three servings of juice per week for whole fruits resulted in a 7% reduction in risk, although there was no such difference with strawberries and cantaloupe melon.

The paper, published on Friday by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), says further work is needed to to explore this "significant" difference.

It speculates that, even if the nutritional values of whole fruit and fruit juice are similar, the difference lies with the fact that one food is a semi-solid and the other a liquid.

"Fluids pass through the stomach to the intestine more rapidly than solids even if nutritional content is similar," says the paper.
#19578
Around 6.5% of the volunteers developed diabetes during the studies.

People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, especially blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 23% compared to those who ate less than one serving per month.

"Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting certain fruits may be especially beneficial for lower diabetes risk," said Qi Sun, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day saw their risk of the disease increase by as much as 21%.

More fresh fruit deters diabetes; juice boosts risk

Agence France-Presse
08/30/2013

PARIS - Eating more whole fresh fruit, especially blueberries, grapes, apples and pears, is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but drinking more fruit juice has the opposite effect, says a study.

British, US and Singaporean researchers pored over data from three big health investigations that took place in the United States, spanning a quarter of a century in all.

More than 187,000 nurses and other professional caregivers were enrolled.

Their health was monitored over the following years, and they regularly answered questionnaires on their eating habits, weight, smoking, physical activity and other pointers to lifestyle.

Of course. What are the various ways people can keep up with Col. Meow?

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and YouTube. Also my website, where I have daily news from my point of view. Let’s just say it’s real news, real bluntly.

Any appearances, events, promotions, or other happenings that Col. Meow fans should know about?

Yes. But unfortunately I cannot discuss the details. I will say there will be some meet and greets this summer, and details will follow. Keep an eye out. ]:<

If someone approached you with a script for the remake of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, what would you do?

Scratch their face off. I’m a fâ€"ing original and demand a fâ€"ing original script. Picture this: Game of Thrones meets Milo and Otis, meets Die Hard: With a Vengeance, meets The Walking Dead, meets Animal House. Again, the genius inside me is unstoppable.

Just for a moment, let’s talk about your plans to take over the world. What are some changes you’d like to make once you’re in charge?

I’m not going to be an elected official, Brad. I’m going to TAKE OVER THE WORLD. So my plans are irrelevant. You’ll just have to fâ€"ing do what I fâ€"ing say. Which is probably somewhere along of the lines of feeding me treaties constantly and making sure the alcohol cupboard is stocked at all times. Go with it.

Any upcoming contests your minions should know about?

We are having an art contest. I want to decorate my cat castle with more pictures of, well, the greatest muse of all time â€" me. If you send in your artwork, I would not only take a picture with it, but it COULD hang in my cat castle where it would get photographed weekly. But the artwork has to involve myself in some way. Go to my official website for more details. I assume you will be participating, Brad. Do not fail me.

You recently left your hometown of Seattle for the bright lights of Los Angeles. What are some of your favorite memories of the Emerald City?

I loved looking out the window as it rained and watching how miserable everyone was. Always warms my heart.

Since cats are nocturnal, what can you tell us about L.A. nightlife?

My L.A. nights consist of me working and devising plans to conquer more minions. In order to do that I drink Scotch, light a candle, listen to Bach, and imagine myself on top of a throne. So far, it’s working.

You recently appeared in a commercial for the Samsung Galaxy alongside Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. What advantages does this smartphone have over, say, the iPhone, Android, or other competing models?

I don’t give a sâ€"t what phone you have. Just fâ€"ing switch.

You often mention your love of Scotch whisky. What’s your favorite Scotch label? Or are you one of those ‘any bottle will do’ types?

I prefer Johnny Walker Black. Any other type of Scotch will suffice. But my pride and soul has, and always will be, Black.

Free association time; I’m going to say the name of an animal species, and you tell me the first word that comes to mind. Dog.

Controllable.

Were you a big ‘social media buff’ prior to the creation of your Facebook fan page?

Fâ€" no. The page was created solely for the purpose of gaining more minions. Minions = power. Make a note to write that down. The genius comes in spurts.

In just a few months, you’ve gained more than 200,000 ‘minions’ on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. What advice do you have for those who want to succeed in the webosphere?

Do what you love and the rest shall follow. I love dominating the world and drinking Scotch. Both come really easily to me.

What are some of the craziest stunts your minions have pulled so far?

I had one minion get a tattoo of my face and put it on his chest. If that’s not loyalty, I don’t know what is.

Seattleite Spotlight: Feline Overlord Colonel Meow

By Brad Nehring
May 30, 2013

The world’s surliest cat talks Scotch, social media, and world domination.

The world was introduced to Colonel Meow last fall, following a breakout feature on The Daily What. The ornery feline has since appeared on Anderson Live (alongside his owner, long-time Seattle resident Anne Marie Avey), and has been profiled extensively on The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, and Reddit. He has even amassed a cavalcade of devoted fans (known unaffectionately as ‘minions’) via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. But the Colonel’s new-found fame has only intensified the smoldering disdain he feels toward literally everything but himself, Scotch whisky, cat treats (aka, ‘treaties’), and unapologetic profanity. And although he’s traded the Pacific Northwest for sunny Los Angeles, he wants Seattleites to know they’re still “at the top of his sâ€"t list”. His words, not mine.

continued...

Let’s start with a softball question â€" is there a special someone in your life?

Besides myself? What’s the point?

What can you tell us about your breed, the Himalayan Persian?

That’s it’s superior to any other of its kind. And I am not just a ‘breed’. I am a mix of a number of things. Chuck Norris, storm clouds, Sriracha, and glow-in-the-dark technology are just a few things found in my blood. There are very few of us out there. And I intend to keep it that way.

You’re arguably the one of the most famous cats in U.S. history. What are your first impressions of nationwide celebrity?

Celebrities are for the weak and feeble-minded. I am not a celebrity. I am a leader first, a lover of women second, and damn good Gears of War player third.

News of his inclusion in the latest Guinness World Records book tops off a fantastic year for Colonel Meow, whose cat’s eye view of the world has already made him an internet sensation. He has his own website, Facebook page and a YouTube channel that has racked up over 2 million views.

Colonel Meow’s fur measurements were taken by three independent vets, recording an average length based on 10 hairs. The evidence was then sent through to Guinness World Records to verify the new record.

Colonel Meow, who was adopted as a rescue cat from the Himalayan & Persian Society, needs his fur brushed 2â€"3 times a week, and it takes both Anne and Eric to complete the job. The couple say that they never use products on Colonel Meow’s fur, applying only water and brushes if he gets dirty. But they admit that they do spend a lot of time vacuuming their flat.

Furry cat 'Colonel Meow' breaks world record

A Himalayan-Persian cross-breed named Colonel Meow has been named as the new world record holder for the cat with the longest fur.

29 Aug 2013

Guinness World Record holder Colonel Meow has fur that reaches an astonishing 9in in length.

The two-year-old feline, named Colonel Meow because of his “epic frown and fur”, will celebrate his achievement with his owners, Anne Marie Avey and Eric Rosario, at their home in Los Angeles.
