“You were the ones who got the most, then why is he now pointing at us who did nothing wrong? What is your problem? He who comes to court must come to court with clean hands,” she said, pointing out that Estrada, in his privilege speech on Wednesday, never bothered to refute the allegations of plunder lodged against him.

“Silence means consent,” Santiago said.

What was happening, she added, was “protective coloration,” a form of squid-tactic defense.

“If you throw enough mud and everyone gets mud in the face then true criminals can no longer be distinguished,” Santiago added.

As for Estrada’s ratting on the other senators for alleged misdeeds involving the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), or pork barrel, Santiago said, “It’s not right that you have a shotgun on your hand and shoot everyone on sight.”

that's why i've always believed that senate/congressional investigations (can't be helped; they love to investigate) should not be televised. :(

She said that what’s happening in the televised hearings is that “each [senator makes] his own scene” and that some senators end up as “drama queens.”

“The real story is this: 2016 is the keyword. We are having elections in 2016. Vice presidential [hopefuls] in the administration like holding blue ribbon hearings because the topic will be ‘talk of the town’ and most likely be televised. They just hog the limelight and then ask these questions that are absolutely fatuous as far as I am concerned,” she said.

on the senate blue ribbon investigation:

Santiago, who is in leave from the Senate, expressed cynicism at the blue ribbon committee investigation of the PDAF scam involving businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles.

She said some of her colleagues, especially those who have their eyes on higher positions in the 2016 elections, were only after publicity.

“If we want to investigate, we should all apply as National Bureau of Investigation agents. An inquiry in aid of legislation means we ask the witnesses what law should be made so that this scam will not be repeated. But all that the whistle-blowers have to say are already in the papers. The public already knows what the whistle-blowers are saying in their affidavits. So why still conduct hearings,” she said.

why equate "not batting an eyelash" with wealth?  there could be other reasons...

1.  the "lost diamond ring" is only symbolic of one's attitude towards material things
2.  the diamond ring is fake
3.  i have no eyelashes to bat
4.  if the diamond ring is lost, then it's lost.  i can't have it back by crying.

sorry, but our ways of looking at things go in different directions.  which reminds me, does much money scare you?  do you use money to scare people?  you seem to imply such.  too bad.  and what a pity.

Myth: Mobile phones are dangerous in hospitals.

Fact:
There are no known cases of death related to this one. Cases of less-serious interference with hospital devices seem to be largely anecdotal, the researchers found. In one real study, mobile phones were found to interfere with 4 percent of devices, but only when the phone was within 3 feet of the device. A more recent study, this year, found no interference in 300 tests in 75 treatment rooms. To the contrary, when doctors use mobile phones, the improved communication means they make fewer mistakes.

Myth: Eating turkey makes you drowsy.

Fact:
Even Carroll and Vreeman believed this one until they researched it. The thing is, a chemical in turkey called tryptophan is known to cause drowsiness. But turkey doesn't contain any more of it than does chicken or beef. This myth is fueled by the fact that turkey is often eaten with a colossal holiday meal, often accompanied by alcohol â€" both things that will make you sleepy.

Myth: Shaved hair grows back faster, coarser and darker.

Fact:
A 1928 clinical trial compared hair growth in shaved patches to growth in non-shaved patches. The hair which replaced the shaved hair was no darker or thicker, and did not grow in faster. More recent studies have confirmed that one. Here's the deal: When hair first comes in after being shaved, it grows with a blunt edge on top, Carroll and Vreeman explain. Over time, the blunt edge gets worn so it may seem thicker than it actually is. Hair that's just emerging can be darker too, because it hasn't been bleached by the sun.

Myth: Fingernails and hair grow after death.

Fact:
Most physicians queried on this one initially thought it was true. Upon further reflection, they realized it's impossible. Here's what happens: "As the body’s skin is drying out, soft tissue, especially skin, is retracting," Vreeman said. "The nails appear much more prominent as the skin dries out. The same is true, but less obvious, with hair. As the skin is shrinking back, the hair looks more prominent or sticks up a bit."

Myth: You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Fact:
"There is no medical evidence to suggest that you need that much water," said Dr. Rachel Vreeman, a pediatrics research fellow at the university and co-author of the journal article. Vreeman thinks this myth can be traced back to a 1945 recommendation from the Nutrition Council that a person consume the equivalent of 8 glasses (64 ounces) of fluid a day. Over the years, "fluid" turned to water. But fruits and vegetables, plus coffee and other liquids, count.

Myth: We use only 10 percent of our brains.

Fact: Physicians and comedians alike, including Jerry Seinfeld, love to cite this one. It's sometimes erroneously credited to Albert Einstein. But MRI scans, PET scans and other imaging studies show no dormant areas of the brain, and even viewing individual neurons or cells reveals no inactive areas, the new paper points out. Metabolic studies of how brain cells process chemicals show no nonfunctioning areas. The myth probably originated with self-improvement hucksters in the early 1900s who wanted to convince people that they had yet not reached their full potential, Carroll figures. It also doesn't jibe with the fact that our other organs run at full tilt.

7 Medical Myths Even Doctors Believe

Robert Roy Britt
December 20, 2007 02:00pm ET

Though hair and fingernails appear to keep growing after death, this is merely a morbid optical illusion at work. In death the human body dehydrates severely, retracting enough skin to expose more nail and hair.

Popular culture is loaded with myths and half-truths. Most are harmless. But when doctors start believing medical myths, perhaps it's time to worry.

In the British Medical Journal this week, researchers looked into several common misconceptions, from the belief that a person should drink eight glasses of water per day to the notion that reading in low light ruins your eyesight.

"We got fired up about this because we knew that physicians accepted these beliefs and were passing this information along to their patients," said Dr. Aaron Carroll, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine. "And these beliefs are frequently cited in the popular media."

And so here they are, so that you can inform your doctor:

The lawmaker's offer

Ellen Tordesillas
September 19, 2013

One of the lawmakers implicated in the pork barrel scam operated by Janet Lim Napoles sent feelers to Malacañang about three weeks ago.

The offer: “I will return the money I got from my PDAF fund plus interest. I will make a public apology. I will resign and will not run for elective office again.”

The requested reward: “Please don’t file plunder charges against me.”

Reason for the offer: “One, I want to spare my grandchildren the stigma of having a grandparent convicted of plunder. Two, I am currently ‘down.’ This is not the best time of my life.”

My source declined to identify the lawmaker and the branch of legislature. I can only guess the identity based on the demands: he or she is old enough to have grandchildren and is eligible for election in 2016.

"Paul turned blue because he ingested and applied elemental silver. It got into his blood stream and then was deposited in his skin as brown particles. And when you see those particles through the skin, they appear to be gray or blue/gray."

And doctors suspect that it's not just his skin that's changed color -- his internal organs are most likely also blue.

Paul's reaction when he realized he'd turned all blue? "I kind of hoped it would fade off!"

But it didn't fade off. Argyria is permanent.

But Karason believed he'd found a miracle cure in colloidal silver and decided it could even help with his dermatitis. Karason said he "started putting the stuff on my face [with] a cotton ball."

First, he said, his face turned blue. But then, the rest of his body changed color as well.

Karason believes that he'd be fine if he hadn't taken that extra step and put the silver directly on his face.

But medical experts like DeLeo believe the damage was already done.

Does Colloidal Silver Work?

But there is plenty of doubt among mainstream doctors. These claims, they say, have no basis in science.

"The FDA has looked at it a long time ago and decided that there is no medical reason for taking colloidal silver," said Dr. Vincent DeLeo, head of dermatology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt and Beth Israel Hospitals in New York.

DeLeo's advice to those who are thinking about trying it anyway? "How about: Don't use it!"

Karason sent away for a kit for making colloidal silver -- a home brew of microscopic silver particles suspended in water. For a while, he was drinking at least 10 ounces a day.

In those first months, he didn't notice a change in his skin color. But there were changes in his health.

"The acid reflux problem I'd been having just went away completely," he said. "I had arthritis in my shoulders so bad I couldn't pull a T-shirt off. And the next thing I knew, it was just gone."

As for whether it was the colloidal silver that had cured him, Karason said, "there's not the slightest doubt in my mind."

excerpts from Feeling Blue Over Skin Color
Aug. 18, 2008, By JOSEPH ANGIER via Primetime:

Silver Poisoning

Karason's blue skin is the result of a rare medical syndrome known as argyria, or silver poisoning. He began using silver as a form of alternative medicine, not realizing what might happen to his skin.

It started a decade ago, when he saw an ad in a new-age magazine promising health and rejuvenation through colloidal silver.

"It was a daisy in a glass of water," he remembered. "The story was that the daisy had been desiccated before it was put back in the water. And [now] it looked like a fresh-picked daisy."

Karason died at the age of 62 this week after being treated for pneumonia at a Washington hospital after having suffered a heart attack. He'd also previously had a severe stroke, his estranged wife Jo Anna Karason told NBC's Today.

ABCNews.com interviewed Karason in 2008. At the time he lived in Oregon. He said the blue tinge had started more than a decade before that when he saw an ad in a new-age magazine promising health and rejuvenation through colloidal silver. He drank about 10 ounces a day of the home-brew that he dissolved in water.

But Cuneta was apparently requested by her husband to stop tweeting about Estrada’s accusation.

“I said na my piece, Sweetheart, no more na! :-) hahaha sowy!!” she said in a tweet where she tagged her husband’s tweeter handle @kikopangilinan.

Desperate move

“Desperate move of a spoiled kid Jinggoy Estrada, please grow up,” netizen Anne Sop also posted on Facebook of Inquirer.net.

And @HecklerForever tweeted this: “THIS JUST IN: Statesman Claro M. Recto is listening in heaven. Every time he hears something laughable he slaps a cherubim.”

“My favorite part of #jinggoy’s speech is when he said he did not steal money. There was no such part on the speech,” netizen @justineloise posted on Twitter.

“He is NOT explaining his role in the scandal, all he is doing is involving some of his cohorts! He is saying Sama Sama na tayong lahat sa Imyerno, hnd lang ako!,” Amorsolo Sanlo posted on the Facebook account of Inquirer.net
