Remembering Women Murdered By Men
Memorials Across Canada
The Cultural Memory Group

Women are murdered by men every day, yet these acts of femicide barely make the news. Across Canada, there are over fifty memorials to women who have been murdered. Each one tells at least two stories: the terrible one of unremitting violence against women and the triumphant one of women claiming public space, naming the violence and insisting that society remember. This book is the first to record thirty of these, and in so doing names the women remembered and the circumstances of their deaths. The authors document the feminist community's response and the initiative taken to build memorials along with the official attempts to keep them out of public view. The memorials documented include those in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, The Pas, Toronto, Montreal, London, Ottawa and Moncton.

World Daily News / Fossett still missing...
September 07, 2007, 01:53:25 AM
Search teams are continuing to scour the deserts of north-west Nevada for missing US pilot Steve Fossett amid increasing fears for his safety.

There has been no word from Mr Fossett since the 63-year-old was seen taking off from a private airfield near Yerington, Nevada, on Monday evening.

Members of the US National Guard and helicopters with thermal imaging technology have joined the operation.

Authorities say it could take a week to cover the search area.

Adam Mayberry, a local pilot and former spokesman for the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, suggested Mr Fossett's single-engine Citabria may have been hit by treacherous winds.

"There's been times when I've been flying in the wind and my blood turns cold," Mr Mayberry said.

World Daily News / Deadly Mosquito Virus now in Europe
September 07, 2007, 01:50:14 AM
A debilitating tropical virus carried by mosquitoes has become established in Europe for the first time.

The Ministry of Health in Italy has confirmed about 160 cases of chikungunya in the Ravenna region in northern Italy.

Travellers have been advised to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

The European Centre for Disease Control urged pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses to seek medical advice before visiting the area.

The villages of Castiglione di Ravenna and Castiglione di Cervia have reported most of the cases.

The main symptoms of the patients were high fever and joint pain, as well as headache, muscle pain, rash and less frequently gastrointestinal symptoms.

One death was reported in a 83-year old individual with underlying medical conditions.

Business and Economy / World Economy Going Down
September 07, 2007, 01:48:55 AM
Global economic growth is likely to be dampened by the turbulence which has swept world markets, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

The IMF said it would be revising down its growth projections - with this year being more affected than 2008.

The US would see the largest impact, with some parts of Europe also set to endure lower growth, it added.

Its comments came a day after the OECD warned the US economy would slow sharply in the second half of 2007.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's World Economic Outlook report is due for release in October.

World Daily News / Syria Fires on Israeli Warplanes
September 07, 2007, 01:47:29 AM
Syria has said its air defences opened fire on Israeli warplanes after they violated its airspace in the north of the country.

Syrian officials said the defences forced the jets to drop ammunition over deserted areas and turn back, according to the official news agency, Sana.

Israel's military said it would not comment on the reports.

Israel and Syria remain technically at war and tensions between them have been rising in recent months.

The Syrian government has insisted that peace talks can be resumed only on the basis of Israel returning the Golan Heights, which it seized in 1967.

Israeli authorities, for their part, have demanded that Syria abandon its support for Palestinian and Lebanese militant groups before talks can begin.

The last peace talks between the two countries broke down in 2000.

Love Talk / Men Like Pretty Women: How About the Women?
September 07, 2007, 12:05:47 AM
Beauty may only be skin deep, but when it comes to picking a mate men like their women pretty. And guys won't be surprised to learn that women are much choosier about partners than they are.

"Just because people say they're looking for a particular set of characteristics in a mate, someone like themselves, doesn't mean that is what they'll end up choosing," Peter M. Todd, of the cognitive science program at Indiana University, Bloomington, said in a telephone interview.

Researchers led by Todd report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that their study found humans were similar to most other mammals, "following Darwin's principle of choosy females and competitive males, even if humans say something different."

Their study involved 26 men and 20 women in Munich, Germany.

Participants ranged in age from 26 to their early 40s and took part in "speed dating," short meetings of three to seven minutes in which people chat, then move on to meet another dater. Afterward, participants check off the people they'd like to meet again, and dates can be arranged between pairs who select one another.

In the study, participants were asked before the session to fill out a questionnaire about what they were looking for in a mate, listing such categories as wealth and status, family commitment, physical appearance, healthiness and attractiveness.

Another suspect in the kidnap-rape-slay of seven-year-old Geraldine Palma was arrested Thursday, according to radio and television reports.

The reports identified the suspect as Gerry Igos who upon his arrest in Bulacan province by police denied involvement in the crime.

Last Wednesday, one Renato C. Bohol, alias Rick-rick, 41, a resident of Isla Putting Bato surrendered to a military unit, said Major Nelson de la Cruz of the Civil Military Operations Battalion and head of the team to whom Bohol had yielded.

De la Cruz said Bohol was accompanied by his father, Serafin, and village officials when Bohol gave himself up at Purok 4, Lupang Pangako in Payatas, Quezon City.

De la Cruz said Bohol denied any involvement in the death of Palma, but admitted to knowing the other suspects now in the custody of police authorities.

De la Cruz said Bohol chose to surrender to the military unit for fear that he would be harmed by police.

League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Bohol Chapter almost passed a resolution supporting the resetting of the October 29 synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls, but the move was retracted later.

Jagna Mayor Exuperio Lloren decided to put the issue aside for reasons of apparent divide in the organization.

Early last week, a House panel approved the postponement of the polls to 2009.

The House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms unanimously approved a consolidated bill postponing the synchronized barangay and SK elections from October this year to second Monday of May 2009.

Makati Rep. Teodoro Locsin, chairman of the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, said that the authors of the 13 separate bills as well as the officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) have agreed that it would be best to postpone the polls.

Locsin said the decision came after the 13 authors of the measures credited the merits of a postponed election, a fact that four Commissioners also agreed.

Meanwhile, Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos insists that the elections should push through, especially because it is mandated by the law.

In this see-saw of opinions, some Bohol mayors initially proposed a unified move to support Locsin’s proposal, but LMP President Exuperio Lloren blocked the support as members became vocal about the issue.

Bohol representative Edgar Chatto, in a radio interview also refused to comment, saying however that he still needs to hear about the contents of the proposal when it would be submitted for plenum.

As this happened, people have been asking the government for a timely consensus in connection with proposals.

“The Government should make up its mind quickly on whether to postpone or not the Oct. 29 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections," Palawan representative Abraham Mitra said adding that this will save the Commission Elections (Comelec) its budget for pre-election preparations.

COMELEC previously said a total P2.13B is allocated for the October 2007 polls. Reports also alleged that the Commission has asked barangays to share 25% for the elections conduct cost.

With only weeks left before the scheduled polls, the Comelec is now in the thick of preparing elections materials for some 310,000 precincts in 41,972 barangays.

Also, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said, if it were all up to Malacanang, the Barangay and SK elections would be held as scheduled next month.

Ermita made the statement in response to a question on the Palace’s stand on the proposal of some lawmakers to postpone the Barangay and SK polls.

“First, the Palace will leave it to both houses of Congress to make the decision whether the Barangay and SK elections will be postponed or not,” Ermita said.

He recalled that senators, who attended the Legislative and Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting in Malacanang last month, felt that the barangay and SK polls would push through.

“The Executive branch is also, at this moment, not for the postponement. However, if the Congress passes a law (postponing the Barangay and SK polls), then we just have to execute it,” Ermita said.

By that, Ermita could mean that the Senate should also do a similar thing and agree on a version of a bill equal to the one passed by the House of Representatives.

The Palace official said that the issue has already passed the committee level in the House of Representatives and it will be the subject of deliberations in both legislative chambers.

Ermita pointed out that under the 2007 national budget, the government has provided P138.9 million for the SK general registration of voters held last July, and P2.1 billion for the Barangay election.

“So the government is ready for the elections in October,” Ermita stressed, but that the final decision rests with Congress.

Disenfranchisement of smaller towns, this is what Maribojoc mayor Leoncio Evasco feared as a result of the recent 2007 census of population conducted by the National Statistics Office nationwide.

Mayor Evasco, who used to administer the country’s biggest city told mayors gathered during the regular League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Meeting at the Jjs Seafoods Wednesday that small local government units could be at the losing end of the line if census enumerators adhere to the survey guidelines.

The recent survey guidelines allegedly ask the enumerators to list only the people who have established daily residence in the place, Evasco shared.

"While I told my enumerators in a meeting not to cheat, I also asked them to be liberal in their interpretation of the survey guidelines," Evasco said.

By this, a barangay resident who studies or works in cities and major centers while staying there most of the time could be listed as city resident, and his barangay could lose him, Evasco explained.

The LMP in general share the same apprehension.

Just as Mayor Evasco wants the organization to cope up with a position paper on this, LMP President and Jagna Mayor Exuperio Lloren says the LMP could formally request the NSO to liberally interpret the guidelines in favor of the smaller local government units.

The fear is rooted primarily on the relative effect of population in the determination of the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), Dimiao Mayor Sylvia Adame confirmed during the plenary of the regular LMP meeting.

IRA is the annual share local government units get from the proceeds of the national internal revenues generated from taxes, a share that is determined by the number of people the local government is supposed to serve and the land area it is to maintain.

“The result actually is more IRA for the cities who have more, while smaller local government units could end up with less IRA shares, the former Davao City administrator hinted.

With the possible decrease in population in smaller LGUS due to strict adherence to the census guidelines, smaller units may be lost, he added.

Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado said when LGUs are so dependent on the IRA, the National Statistics and Coordination Board should also look at the issues raised here.

With the issue, the governor, who is leaving for Manila volunteered to hand-carry the LMP resolution to the proper authorities.

The sealed casket bearing the body of an undocumented Filipino caregiver finally arrived in the Philippines three weeks after she died of an aneurysm in the United States, ABS-CBN News reported.

Lucia Imbaldone, 59, passed away in Chicago, Illinois on July 23.  Her coffin arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on board an Asiana Airlines flight at noon Wednesday.

Imbaldone lived alone in Chicago and had neither family nor friends to help repatriate her body to the Philippines. She had no working permit.

Through the Philippine consulate in Chicago, Filipinos from all over the US were able to raise $7,500, enough to ship her remains home and help support her orphaned family.

Officials of the consulate said donations poured in as concerned Filipinos and organizations paid their last respects during the funeral service over the weekend.

At noon Wednesday family members led by eldest daughter Liberty Martinez received the casket bearing Imbaldone's remains at the airport. They thanked all those who helped repatriate Imbaldone's remains.

Martinez said her mother worked 24 hours a day for the past nine years in order to support her family back home.

Her daughter also said that Imbaldone did not tell them about her condition throughout her stay in Chicago.

Despite being an illegal alien, Martinez praised her mother for her sacrifices.

Vice-Consul Roberto Bernardo, for his part, said the consulate is prepared to help Filipinos in need regardless of immigration status.

Bohol Latest News / U.S. partnership with Bohol
September 06, 2007, 09:55:27 PM
By Rey Anthony Chiu
Philippine Information Agency

The United States of America reaffirmed its commitment to the development of Bohol when it launched here two major activities to enhance environmental governance, strengthen environment management and at the same time promote sustainable tourism.

No less than US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney represented the people of America through the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) when she personally graced the launching here of Linking Initiatives and Networking for the Control of Tuberculosis in Children (TBLINC) and Going Green, an environmental tool kit for the tourism sector.

Provincial Health Officer Rey Moses Cabagnot said the USAid choice to get to Bohol was based on Bohol’s track record in implementing health programs aside from the fact that it still rates high among the provinces with TB incidence in children.

In her keynote address at the double launch held at the Metrocenter Thursday, Ambassador Kenney who was visibly elated upon her first visit to Bohol pointed out that her coming would be marked by significant partnerships, innovations and celebrations for the future.

“This day, we see partnerships among the governments, the civil society, tourism stakeholders and the vibrant community committed to giving a better future and brighter future,” she beamed.

On the USAid assistance, she called it an innovation in partnership in getting to the problem of TB control coupled with Bohol’s commitment to protect the environment.

Moreover, she cited Bohol initiatives of giving better health as a key move to protect the children whom she considers as Bohol’s greatest resource for the future.

In his address, Governor Erico Aumentado told the ambassador that all the Bohol initiatives were geared towards poverty alleviation, which he sees as the root to all social ills.

He said the new partnership with the US government would without doubt propel Bohol to its vision of development through eco-cultural tourism.

According to Work Wildlife Fund Project Officer Yeb Saño, “Going Green aims to inform and encourage owners and operators of coastal businesses in the tourism sector to become more environmentally responsible”.

“This is important because keeping the environment pristine means more tourists to enjoy the natural beauty, and this makes financial sense,” he said in a press statement furnished to the media.

Amb. Kenney also turned over the Going Green Toolkit, an environmental tool to guide tourism sector stakeholders in taking up the environmental responsibility.

“Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world. In Bohol, many of our tourists sites are famous for their outstanding natural beauty. Tourists come for the beautiful scenery and extraordinary experience, so it makes sense for the tourism sector to look after its lifeline- the natural environment, pressed David Valdez, the president of the WWF Philippines.

Beach resorts here in Bohol have recently committed to implement waste-water treatment facilities so as to keep the beaches clean and at the same time save on water, energy and infrastructure development

Bohol Latest News / Rice Sufficiency of Bohol in 2010
September 06, 2007, 09:46:17 PM
Written By Rey Anthony Chiu
Philippine Information Agency

Getting to the ground running, reinstated Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog now rolls her sleeves and gets down to business to hit an ambitious rice sufficiency in 2010.

Quirog, who assumed a regional position years back took the provincial aggie top seat and immediately presented her agenda at the monthly League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Meeting held at the Jjs Sea foods Wednesday, September 5.

Citing a finding during the recent agricultural value chain survey to lobby for more rice support, the small and dynamic agriculturist shared that Bohol grows 67.9% of Central Visayas regional rice requirement, underlining the crucial role it plays in the dream for rice sufficiency in the region.

In the general target to make the Central Visayas rice-self sufficient, regional authorities have put up a production quota of at least 2500 hectares, and Bohol being the region’s prime rice producer gets to plant at least 2000 hectares within the year to raise CV production by 40%.

However, a slight El Nino hit the region and major weather conditions dealt problems on the harvest output that Bohol was not able to hit the target, she admitted.

Evenb then, Quirog is still hopeful that despite falling short of the 40% production increase target which they hoped to get from the 2,000 hectares of planted farms, a quick turn-around program would be enough to cover up for the lost harvest.

What Bohol fails in area planted to hit the production increase, Quirog wants to compensate by using the same planted paddies for a quick planting succession: the quick turn around formula to egt Bohol rice production going.

As to the question, will production target be met?

She said as long as the local officials cooperate by allowing more of farm-technicians’ access to farmers, she said as she urged mayors to help Bohol attain the target despite the backlog.

Showing a graph to represent contrasts between farm outputs using the technical inputs from experts, the counterpart fertilizer, water management and the utilization of the right kind of seeds, the Bohol top aggie head said it could be done, with the local support, she underscored.

By that, she claimed that the present rice sufficiency of a little over 70%, could be raised to perhaps a hundred percent, even as the demand to cultivate more rice fields is slowly addressed.

In related developments, scientists are eyeing the commercial release of Golden Rice by 2011.

This, they said would further boost the government’s effort to combat malnutrition and reduce the chronic micronutrient deficiency suffered by millions of children and pregnant women.

The rice variety developed by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is still under the process of seeking approval for distribution as it being a genetically improved rice variety.

The rice variety, now fortified with vitamin A, iron and zinc is touted as the ultimate solution to the problem of malnutrition being experienced by at least 2 billion people worldwide.

The production of stable lines for Golden Rice and fingerprinting are being undertaken while tests on the availability, safety and environmental risks of the rice variety will be completed by next year, according to PhilRice.

After these, field trials on Golden Rice will be undertaken by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) before approval could be granted by the National Biosafety Committee of the Philippines (NBCP).

A single location trial of elite lines will be done for two cropping seasons before year-end and would last until the middle of next year at IRRI’s controlled-facility at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Los Baños, Laguna.

Multilocation field trials will be conducted in 2010 to gather agronomic and biosafety data.

PhilRice is breeding Golden Rice into PSB Rc82, the most popular variety and grown all over the Philippines, and new, high-quality, multidisease resistant varieties, or the “3-in-1” rice, that combines Golden Rice with the Tungrovirus- and bacterial leaf blight-resistant varieties.

Gerard Barry, coordinator of the Golden Rice Network, said in his update on Golden Rice that he hopes national government agencies, particularly the NBCP, will approve its commercial release by 2011.

Golden Rice Network unites experts in various research institutes in the Philippines, Vietnam, Germany, India, Bangladesh, China and Indonesia.

The variety however may not help Bohol rice farmers with the existing policy that the province adopted which is the permanent ban on genetically modified organisms.

On Sept. 18, 2002, CIA director George Tenet briefed President Bush in the Oval Office on top-secret intelligence that Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction, according to two former senior CIA officers. Bush dismissed as worthless this information from the Iraqi foreign minister, a member of Saddam's inner circle, although it turned out to be accurate in every detail. Tenet never brought it up again.

Nor was the intelligence included in the National Intelligence Estimate of October 2002, which stated categorically that Iraq possessed WMD. No one in Congress was aware of the secret intelligence that Saddam had no WMD as the House of Representatives and the Senate voted, a week after the submission of the NIE, on the Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq. The information, moreover, was not circulated within the CIA among those agents involved in operations to prove whether Saddam had WMD.

On April 23, 2006, CBS's "60 Minutes" interviewed Tyler Drumheller, the former CIA chief of clandestine operations for Europe, who disclosed that the agency had received documentary intelligence from Naji Sabri, Saddam's foreign minister, that Saddam did not have WMD. "We continued to validate him the whole way through," said Drumheller. "The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming, and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy, to justify the policy."

Bohol Latest News / Bohol Rebel Returnees
September 06, 2007, 09:28:40 PM
By Rey Anthony Chiu
Philippine Information Agency

Hopes sprout and a peaceful future awaits the Kauban sa Reporma (rebel returnees) who see the looming protection as they go mainstream with the government’s general amnesty program in the works.

For Bohol program coordinator and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Constancia Tuñacao, the recent developments springing from the Local Peace and Security Assembly (LPSA) opened hopes’ floodgates for Boholano KRs and the rest of the country.

The recent LPSA proposed the re-granting of the general amnesty program to facilitate the peaceful return of brother Filipinos who have grown tired of the fruitless armed struggle and have shown intent on peaceful surrender.

The social welfare head, who also processes documents for amnesty applicants to the Bacolod-based Local Amnesty Board, was elated over reports that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the initial allocation of P500M for the country’s rebel returnee program.

The P500M initial release intended to animate the national government’s new direction in investing in peace was the core of the President’s message during the special cabinet cluster meeting she convened after the Bohol assembly.

The meeting tried to look into the Bohol proposal to re-grant the suspended amnesty while pushing the government to exhaust all means to propagate the Bohol formula in winning over insurgency.

In the Bohol LPSA, participants asked the government to reactivate local peace fora and empowering the communities to keep them away from the problem.

Despite suspended amnesty program, Bohol bravely initiated localized peace talks. This has advanced its peace cause by scoring at least 185 rebel returnees, despite risking the rebels’ from being summoned to the courts to face their past offenses while in the movement.

Now tending KRs exposed to the threat, Bohol still has to creatively source out funds as livelihood seed money for the KRs rehabilitation.

Without the sustainable source of funds, recent KRs are deprived of the amnesty package (which early surrenderees got), Tunacao said.

According to the OPSWD, rebel returnees each got P12,500 as financial assistance fund, while the LGU sometimes put in livelihood assistance, which at one point included farm and home lots and housing units.

The recent developments indicate however that such loopholes could already be addressed, though the fund may not be enough, Tuñacao admitted.

During the recent special NSC, the President said that the allocation is for the processing of amnesty applications and as a seed capital for livelihood projects of communist rebels who return to the folds of the law.

The fund, comes from the profits the country earned in its economic growth for the second quarter, the strongest in 20 years, the president told the security cluster.

“Unfortunately, the people hear very little of these cheerful economic news, but these positive developments are happening, the President said.

Using such as payback, the Chief Executive stressed that the country still needs to maintain and improve on the gains already achieved: economic reform, peace and a stable political climate.

She said sowing stronger peace and security in the regions happen now with the partnership of the local leaders, the church and the national government.

Fashion designer Coco Chanel had a personal rule: Before she left the house, the style icon always removed one piece of her ensemble to avoid the faux-pas of wearing too many accessories.  Were Chanel alive today and working as a hiring manager, she would likely offer similar advice to job seekers: You don't have to include everything.

Job seekers do themselves a disservice when they send out resumes with more information than they need. Most employers don't have the time or patience to sift through the irrelevant details. Here are 10 things your resume could do without:

1. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. "If you are careless enough to send out this most important document with a mistake ... I immediately assume you'll never care enough about the work you send out representing my company," says Jose Bandujo, president of New York-based Bandujo Advertising. He recalls one candidate who misspelled Manhattan, despite having worked in the city for a decade and another whose great educational background didn't compensate for the fact that he couldn't spell "education."

2. Opening objectives.
"These are generic ... They do nothing to differentiate one candidate from another," says Donna Flagg, president of The Krysalis Group, a human resource and management consulting firm in New York.

3.  Personal attributes. Listing personal information such as height, weight and age and providing photographs is a pet peeve for Heather Mayfield, vice president of training and operations for Snelling Staffing Services. "It is amazing that we still see this on the resumes of today, but they are out there."

4. Interests and hobbies.  If these points of information don't pertain to the job in question, there's no need to include them.  "Create a mystery and save these kinds of data points when you start the job," advises Roy Blitzer, author of 'Hire Me, Inc.: Resumes and Cover Letters that Get Results.'

5. Details of every task you've ever performed in every job you've ever had. "It's too much information. Managers and recruiters need to know at-a-glance what makes a candidate special," Flagg says. Focus on those details that pertain to the job for which you're applying.

6. Excessive bragging. Stating one's accomplishments can be helpful, but when it's overdone, the candidate can come across as narcissistic, a huge turnoff for employers, Flagg says.

7. Outdated information.  Leave off the activities that you did in high school if graduation was a few years ago and omit jobs you held 10 or more years ago, as the information is probably irrelevant to the position you're trying for now.

8. False information. "Putting that you have a B.S. on a resume when you do not have one is BS,'" jokes Stephen Viscusi, author of 'On the Job: How to Make it in the Real World of Work." Not only is lying on a resume unfair and dishonest, it's also not very intelligent.  "Companies verify dates of employment -- often after you start. If you have lied, they fire you...Nobody wants to hire a liar. Nobody."

9. Unexplained gaps in work history.  While job seekers should account for these gaps, they should be careful with their wording.  "One of the weirdest things that I ever saw on a resume ... was a candidate who explained a 10-year lapse in work experience as being in jail during those years for killing her husband," recalls Linda Goodspeed, marketing recruiting manager at VistaPrint.  In such a situation, she says, the best thing to write would be "left work for personal reasons," and the candidate would be able to explain the criminal record later.

10. A lack of professionalism.  Colored paper, cutesy fonts, links to personal web sites and childish e-mail addresses all scream unprofessional and are a turn off to hiring managers.  One otherwise qualified applicant didn't get an interview at Bandujo's firm solely because of the name in her email address: "weird2themax." "I recognize the advertising industry is full of talented, interesting 'characters'," Bandujo says, "but did I really want one who thought she was weird to the max?" No, he decided, he did not.

Minda is a masseuse with a difference. Her caress is used to abort foetuses.

The 50-year-old grandmother has lost count of the number of pregnancies she has terminated in this largely Roman Catholic country where abortion is illegal and strictly taboo, but where about half a million women end their pregnancies every year.

The backstreet abortions performed by healers like Minda may become more common as a United States government aid program plans to stop distributing contraceptives in the Philippines in 2008. This will leave birth control up to the government which under the influence of Catholic bishops advocates unreliable natural birth control methods rather than the pill and condoms.

Most women who seek abortions are like Remy, married with several children and too poor to afford another baby.

The petite 44-year old, who declined to give her last name, paid 150 pesos ($3) for a hilot, or traditional midwife like Minda, to crush her three-month old foetus using rough strokes and pincer-like grips on her belly.

The procedure, which can also involve pounding the lower abdomen to trigger a miscarriage, is called a massage.

"I felt guilty but I thought it was better than having another child that will only suffer because we have no food," she said in an interview in a slum on the outskirts of Manila.

Remy bled for a week after her session with the hilot, passing out with the pain. She refused to let her husband take her to the hospital because of the shame of what she had done and because they couldn't afford the medical bills.

"I just prayed to God and asked for forgiveness," she said.

Before her abortion, Remy had no access to artificial family planning. If she had, she says she wouldn't have become pregnant and resorted to the potentially life-threatening procedure.

Under President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, a devout Catholic who relies on the support of politically powerful bishops, the central government promotes natural family planning methods such as abstinence when the woman is ovulating.

Poor people, who make up the majority of the population, rely largely on the U.S. government agency USAID, the main supplier of contraceptives in the country for the past 30 years.

But USAID has started phasing out supplies and plans to end the rest of its donation programme in 2008. The agency has said its phase-out is in line with Manila's goal of self-reliance in family planning.

DESPERATE SITUATION

Officials says the central government's reluctance to take up where USAID will leave off will certainly push up the country's rate of abortions, which is already twice as high as in western Europe, where terminations are legal and easily accessible.

"Supplies (of contraceptives) have already run out in many towns and cities so the situation is rather desperate," said Dr Alberto Romualdez, a former health secretary under deposed President Joseph Estrada.

Catholic clerics in the Philippines urge their congregations to use natural family methods rather than the contraceptive pill.

"The natural family planning method is a good option, not only a good one but an effective one," Father Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, told Reuters.

Over half of women who have had an abortion in the Philippines were not using any family planning and of those that were, three-quarters were using natural methods advocated by the government such as rhythm or withdrawal, according to a survey by the U.S.-based. Guttmacher Institute.

Both methods have high failure rates.

The population, currently estimated at 89 million, is expected to swell to 142 million by 2040 and the rapid arrival of new mouths to feed is already straining the country's creaking infrastructure and choking efforts to cut poverty."

POLICE SIRENS

Women who abort their foetuses in the Philippines risk a prison sentence of upto six years, while anyone providing help or assisting faces a similar sentence as well as the loss of any medical licence.

Only one in four women have a surgical procedure according to the Guttmacher Institute. The 4,000-15,000 peso cost, usually in private clinics, is beyond the pockets of most women.

Over 30 percent ingest either cytotec, an anti-ulcer treatment they can buy in pharmacies, or herbal concoctions, often sold in stalls in front of churches.

Around 20 percent take hormonal drugs, or aspirin, as well as other medications and alcohol. Some starve themselves or fling themselves down stairs. Most women only succeed in ending their pregnancy after multiple attempts.

Among poor women seeking abortions, over 20 percent get massages from hilots or insert catheters in their vaginas.

One mother of three, who had two abortions, said the hilot's touch was agony.

"When she squeezed, it was so painful I wanted to kick her. I bit the blanket. I wanted to cry but I felt I had to contain myself," said the woman, who declined to be named.

"The pain was worse than childbirth."

The second time she had a surgical procedure in a backstreet clinic without anaesthetic.

"The room was so close to the street I could hear cars and police sirens," she said. "I was afraid I was going to be arrested with my legs wide open."

Dr Junice Melgar, executive director of Likhaan, a women's health organisation, said a lack of information about artificial contraception and myths about their side-effects was putting some poor people off using them.

"There is a lot of fear among the women," she said. "You have women choosing abortion before family planning because of these fears."

Ignorance and rumours, sometimes spread by pro-life groups and members of the clergy, have led some Filipinos to believe that the contraceptive pill is made from placenta and the tablets accumulate in the abdomen and cause cancer.

FEEL THE PAIN

Although abortion is rarely discussed publicly in the Philippines, nearly 80,000 women are treated in hospitals every year for complications from induced abortion, according to health reports.

Many are treated roughly by nurses and doctors who abhor what they have done. Painkillers are sometimes withheld. At least 800 women are estimated to die every year from complications.

"Doctors feel that women need to feel the pain so that they will remember and not do it again," said Melgar.

Women who have miscarried sometimes suffer the same ill-treatment because they are suspected of inducing the loss.

Gemma Apelado, a mother of one, said doctors let her bleed all night when she went to a hospital in Tondo, a poor area of Manila, after having a miscarriage at four months.

"They were all standing around me and they were saying that I took something to induce an abortion," she said. "They were telling me I didn't have any conscience."

Minda, the hilot, says her conscience has started to trouble her. The mother of nine administers pills to induce abortion and uses heavy strokes to push the foetus down.

"I worry about karma," she said. "But I also pity those having to undergo abortions".

Health and Food / Health Costs Expected to Rise
September 06, 2007, 05:19:04 PM
(Reuters) - Health plan costs are expected to rise at a slightly faster rate in 2008, after three years of flat growth, according to preliminary results of a new survey.

Health benefit costs are expected to grow 6.7 percent in 2008, after increases of around 6 percent in prior years, according to preliminary survey findings released by the health and benefits unit of Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Costs would grow by 9 percent on average next year if the employers made no changes, but most respondents expect to see a lower increase by changing plans, adding lower-cost options or altering the design of their benefits, Mercer said.

"It's only a slight uptick, but of course we'd rather see cost growth trending down," said Blaine Bos, a senior Mercer consultant.

The results represent responses from 1,557 employer health plan sponsors. Mercer said around 3,000 employers will ultimately participate in the survey and complete results will be released by the end of the year.

Philippine Education / On Track For Graduation
September 06, 2007, 04:09:28 PM
By Marshall Loeb

An advice to parents...
Here are four things parents can do to help ensure their kids successfully matriculate:

   1. Stress the importance of studying and time management. A review of more than 100 retention studies in 2004 determined that strong study habits and time-management skills were better predictors of who would go on to graduate than high school grades or test scores.

   2. Make sure that students address gaps in their education. Incoming students who lack basic reading, writing or math skills risk getting in over their heads. If your children need extra help, suggest that they use their first year to take some remedial classes. It's important that they take steps to fill these gaps early on, as most college dropouts leave by the end of their first year.

   3. Encourage them to get involved. Students who join clubs or participate in other campus activities early in their freshman year are more likely to effectively assimilate, according to Raley. "One of the key influences on a student's commitment to completing college is whether the student successfully integrates into social circles," Raley writes.

   4. Don't disengage. Entering college is a challenging transition, so take the time to ask your child about grades, social network and general state of mind. If you find that they are having a hard time connecting with peers or faculty, it may be time for a reappraisal. Students sometimes falter when they find themselves surrounded by people who don't share their values or culture, Raley warns. Perhaps your child should consider moving to a different dorm -- or even a different school?

These Chinese hackers may be part of a larger group of organized hackers named "Titan Rain." An article by Time Magazine was disappointing because U.S. authorities have not been paying serious attention to the infiltration.

According to an American systems analyst, he's saddened by the fact that many U.S. authorities simply ignored his warning that the Chinese hackers have already hijacked many military and corporate computers. He even went on warning that China can bring down the U.S. by triggering a massive computer attack, perhaps setting off nuclear installations in the U.S. and controlling US-owned satellites.

Now these old-aged (mga tiguwang) U.S. authorities (those in FBI, CIA, and State Department) may not understand the serious damage and implication to this infiltration because they don't understand the language of computer and networking. Perhaps their knowledge on computer is up to receiving and sending office e-mails only. This was the lamentation of an American hacker who has been trying to stop the Titan Rain.

World Daily News / A Call for Reform in Saudi Arabia
September 06, 2007, 10:17:35 AM
A senior Saudi prince has said he plans to form a political party and has criticised other senior royals for monopolising power and blocking reform.

Talal Bin Abdul-Aziz, a half-brother of King Abdullah, also criticised the jailing of well-known reformists.

Saudi officials made no immediate comment to Prince Talal's remarks.

The prince, who holds no official post, is seen as something of a maverick due to his past calls for reform, says BBC Middle East analyst Roger Hardy.

In the 1960s, he became known as the "Red Prince" when he broke with the ruling family and went into exile in Egypt, whose president, Gamal Abdul Nasser, was a severe critic of the Gulf kingdom.

But today, the prince is considered to be close to King Abdullah, who was seen as sympathetic to reform when he came to the throne two years ago.

Prince Talal is now trying, in a very public way, to test the limits of political change, our correspondent says.

About three quarters of a million toys are being recalled because they are decorated with paint containing too much lead, the US company says.

World Daily News / U.S. Economy in Bad Shape
September 05, 2007, 11:07:58 PM
The US economy will slow sharply in the second half of the year and the risk of it going into recession cannot be ruled out, the OECD has warned.

The 30-nation group of top economies said the global financial fallout from the current US sub-prime mortgage crisis would continue for some time.

But it said US consumers remained resilient while Europe was unlikely to be as badly affected as the US.

Uncertainty over the size of sub-prime losses has caused stock market turmoil.

Financial risk

The OECD said the contraction in the US housing market and the wider problems in the financial markets it has triggered would have a negative impact on the US economy.

It is now forecasting economic growth to fall to 2% in the third quarter and 1.5% in the fourth quarter from the 4% recorded between April and June.

"We are looking at a slowdown in the US economy which is quite significant," said the OECD's chief economist Jean-Philippe Cotis.

A B-52 bomber flew across the US last week mistakenly loaded with up to six nuclear-armed missiles, unnamed air force officials are quoted as saying.

The missiles were unaccounted for during a three-hour flight from a North Dakota air base to one in Louisiana.

Air Force spokesman Lt-Col Ed Thomas told Army Times the weapons were "always in our custody".

Army Times said the missiles were to be decommissioned but were mistakenly mounted on the bomber's wings.

The W80-1 warhead has a yield of five to 150 kilotons, the paper said.

A military official told AFP news agency that President George W Bush had been informed of the mix-up.

"There are procedures in place and they kicked in and worked," the official said.

'Decertified'

The flight was reportedly on 30 August from the Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Col Thomas told Army Times: "Air Force standards are very exacting when it comes to munitions handling.

"The weapons were always in our custody and there was never a danger to the American public."

Col Thomas said the loading crew involved had been temporarily "decertified" pending retraining and an investigation had been launched.

Three men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning a "massive" terrorist attack on US facilities in the country, officials have said.

Federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the three had trained at camps in Pakistan and procured some 700kg (1,500lbs) of chemicals for explosives.

She said the accused had sought to target facilities visited by Americans, such as nightclubs, pubs or airports.

Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung said the men had posed "an imminent threat".

Media reports said they were planning attacks against a US military base in Ramstein and Frankfurt airport.

Surveillance effort

Ms Harms said the men planned to use vehicles loaded with the explosives to kill or injure large numbers of people.

The arrests had prevented "massive bomb attacks", she said.

The suspects, aged 22, 28 and 29, were alleged to be members of the German cell of a group she named as Islamic Jihad Union.

Two of the men were German nationals who had converted to Islam, while the third was a Turkish man.

Ms Harms said the al-Qaeda-linked group had set up the cell last year.

All three men had attended a training camp in Pakistan, police sources said.

Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany's federal crime office, said the men had a "profound hatred of US citizens".

They had been under surveillance for six months, but the authorities decided to act when it became clear the men were planning to move their huge stores of hydrogen peroxide.

Policemen in Bohol involved in the successful operation in apprehending the six members of the notorious 'Meloy Garcia' criminal gang will have a big chance of getting a commendation from no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

National Police Commission (Napolcom-7) Director Atty. Eduardo Calibo bared their office is making a recommendation for the Bohol cop-operatives to receive a Presidential Commendation for their exemplary performance in collaring the criminal suspects.

Calibo said the recommendation will be submitted to the commission en banc which in turn will submit the body's proposal for Presidential Commendation to President Arroyo.

The Presidential Commendation is separate from the proposal for promotion, Calibo said.

Calibo revealed that it is the Philippine National Police that will initiate the recommendation for promotion of the concerned cops while their office merely recommends it.

The Napolcom regional chief however, declared that the proposal for promotion will undergo a thorough scrutiny and evaluation to ensure that only those involved in the operation are merited with a step in rank.

Calibo said previous incidents have happened that during a promotion deliberation, the list of names to be promoted includes those that are not even part of the operation which is the reason why any recommended promotion takes a longer time than a commendation.

As to the claim of former Panglao Mayor Dolerech Dumaluan that the credit for the successful arrest of the two members of the 'Meloy Garcia' gang should go to the beach resort's security guard who tipped off the police about the two suspects is inaccurate, Calibo pointed out.

Dumaluan owns the beach resort where the suspects went into hiding after the bank robbery.

Calibo said while the security guard informed the police about the suspicious characters that checked-in in one of the cottages, the Tagbilaran City police force were responsible in crashing the door of the cottage while other cops from the Bohol Provincial Police Office surrounded the resort to prevent the escape of the suspects.

Calibo however lauded the efforts of the citizens in Bohol for being active in helping the police collar the criminals describing it as 'people power policy.' The community plays a vital role in crime prevention and maintaining peace and order in their locality, Calibo said.

Earlier, Police Regional Office (PRO-7) Deputy Director for Administration C/Supt. Ronald Roderos said that they are working on also giving out commendation or citation to the ordinary citizens who informed the police about the suspects which eventually led to their arrest. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)

The Bohol Chronicle

Expropriation of lots located in two barangays of Panglao will start next month for the international airport development project.

Provincial legal officer Atty. Handel Lagunay bared in an interview with the Chronicle yesterday that the provincial government will have to expropriate about 9-percent of the required land area for the Panglao airport.

This as negotiations with its owners have failed as most of them are either not willing to sell or are absentee owners.

To be excluded from the expropriation are those lots whose owners are willing to sell and those who have expressed desire to barter their lots of a government owned properties in Panglao.

Lagunay assured that the total to be subjected for expropriation is just a small portion of the land area to be utilized for the airport. These are located in barangays Tawala and Bolod.

Some of these lots even have the same declared owner, Lagunay said.

As of August 31, the provincial government already acquired 88.2 hectares of the 195 hectares that has to be acquired. Some are already paid while some documents of these lots are still being processed, Lagunay disclosed.

About P100-million was released from the total P147-million needed for the lot acquisition, according to Lagunay.

The airport project requires at least 215 hectares for the runway, administration building and facilities.

Lagunay said Bohol is assured the project will be finished and operational by April 2010, before the term of Pres. Arroyo will end.

The top security man of the Bank of Commerce commended yesterday guards who fought it out with members of the Meloy Garcia holdup gang in a robbery-shootout last week.

The bank's vice president for security, retired Gen. Prospero Noble Jr. flew in from Manila yesterday to personally give commendation to the security men and give financial aid to the wife of slain guard Remegio Cañizar.

Two other wounded guards, Tirso Fullido and Meliton Lamoste, were given financial assistance and commendation by Noble.

Noble took time to hear the account of the holdup from security guards Noel Cajes and Meliton Lamoste who survived the shootout with the robbers.

Bank teller Mabel Marie Real also recounted the incident.

ADMITS LAPSES

Noble admitted to lapses on the part of the bank and its guards.

In a talk with the media yesterday, Noble said, that there were shortcomings of its security men and on the part of the company.

However, Noble assured that the weaknesses will be immediately corrected.

Noble said the Bank of Commerce Tagbilaran Branch was supposed to get its own armored van which is already for delivery here from Manila.

It could have deterred Garcia's group from carrying out the robbery, he said.

The Bank of Commerce uses a Mitsubishi Adventure van in picking up deposits from business establishments here.

"We don't want to blame anybody, [but] definitely there were lapses," according to Noble.

"Hopefully we can correct it," he added.

Noble said, he sees no reason to blame the security men as they fought it out with the bandits.

Lamoste sustained a bullet wound in his right arm that went through to graze his chest. He is already out of the hospital.

Fullido is still recovering from a gunshot wound that went through his abdomen and cut an intestine.

During the shootout, the security guards hit the suspect Cresencio Reguya on his back. Doctors at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital earlier pronounced the suspect could be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Head security guard Noel Cajes chased after the fleeing robbers along Soledad Street where he was able to hit another suspect, Gilven Nuez, in the arm.

COMMUNITY EFFORT

The retired general acknowledged that the community involvement that led to the arrest of all six suspects was exceptional.

"Through your civic-minded citizens the core of the robbery group were arrested," Noble said.

According to Noble, usually suspects can no longer be captured after 30 minutes from their commission of the crime if there is no participation from the public.

COMMENDATIONS AND FINANCIAL AID

Noble handed out cash assistance from the bank to the wife of Cañizar amounting to P50,000.

Meanwhile, the two wounded guards were also given P10,000 each.

Additional donations were also given by the Chiefs of Security Association of the Philippines, whom Noble is a member.

Noble informed the wounded guards that their hospital bills will be paid by the bank.

As a way of expressing its gratitude to the City PNP, Noble said the Bank of Commerce will donate some equipment to the police station.

ASSISTANCE FROM DYRD LISTENERS

A fund drive initiated over Station dyRD's top-rated Inyong Alagad netted a total of P43,080.

From this amount, P25,848 or 70% will be given to the family of Cañizar while Fullido and Lamoste will each get P6,462.

The Tagbilaran City PNP is now investigating another suspect in the murder and robbery of Bohol Tropics Resort sales and marketing executive Jack Arat.

This even as police filed charges of illegal possession of bladed weapon on their first suspect who was apprehended Saturday night.

Police arrested one Jeffrey Garrote, 25, a resident of Maribojoc shortly before midnight last Saturday as he was selling a mobile phone similar to that belonging to the slain Arat.

Police chief Jacinto Cesar told the Chronicle that Garrote was the suspect of the Arat murder.

However, Garrote denied the allegations that he killed Arat but admitted that the cellphone he was selling had been stolen by a student who passed it on to him.

SPO4 Adriano Bacus of the City PNP said that they are still looking for the said student.

Garrote was spotted by patrolling policemen along Belderol Street but was nabbed at Graham Avenue after a police chase.

He was caught in possession of a knife.

From their shortlist of suspects, the city police are now exploring the possibility that Arat knew his assailant.

Arat was gunned down in front of his residence along J.S. Torralba Street around 3 a.m. last August 13. He died a few hours after.

His attacker divested him of two expensive cellular phones and some P15,000.

Garrote is reportedly a police character who sells stolen cellular phones, police said.

Arat, 30, was a marketing and sales executive of Bohol Tropics Resort Club.

Workplace & Productivity / Career Dos and Don'ts
September 05, 2007, 08:22:29 PM
By Tom Musbach

People in the public eye made big professional strides and damaging missteps during 2006, and we can all learn from their examples. Think of Katie Couric inspiring others with her ascension to the anchor chair at CBS News, or Mel Gibson offending fans and associates with his anti-Semitic comments.
Some other high-profile incidents from 2006, highlighted below, offer simple insights and reminders of what to do and not do on the job.

DO: Push yourself to advanced skill levels. Before 2006, France's Amelie Mauresmo was known as the world's best pro female tennis player who never won a major tournament. That changed when she won this year's Australian Open and Wimbledon, crushing public doubts about her ability to win under pressure.

"Success in this world, especially in really difficult professions like sports and the arts, is based on two things: talent and persistence. Without the latter, the former won't do you any good," says Alexandra Levit, a career consultant and author of "They Don't Teach Corporate in College." "If you have a dream, always keep it in your mind's eye, and outline mini-goals to achieve that dream one step at a time."

DON'T: Compromise your ethical judgment. Former Enron chief Jeffrey Skilling was sentenced in October to 24 years in prison after being convicted on 19 counts of defrauding investors.
"If you're lacking in the ethics department, you have no place doing business -- with anyone," says Debra Davenport, a master professional mentor, licensed career counselor, and employment agent.

DO: Stick to your values. Meredith Vieira stepped off the fast track as a "60 Minutes" correspondent 15 years ago to take care of her family, but her commitment did not derail her career. This year she became co-anchor of the top-rated "Today" show on NBC, a job which allows her to spend afternoons with her family.

"Work-life balance encompasses family values and self-care," says Davenport. "Sometimes we have to 'just say no' to work and feel confident in our decision to focus temporarily on our most important priorities. We're most productive when we're healthy and living in sync with our personal value system."

DON'T: Send inappropriate emails, IMs, or text messages to associates. Former Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican from Florida, was forced to resign amid scandal caused by text messages he had sent to congressional pages.

"If you think that your employer wouldn't track something as silly as an instant message conversation, you're wrong," says Levit. "Always conduct yourself in a manner that reflects a mature, competent, and professional corporate persona."

DO: Focus on your passion, and use your strengths to make a difference. Former Vice President Al Gore made a remarkable comeback this year as a spokesman for global warming's dangers with his engaging and powerful documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."

"After he came to the realization that the climate issue was a topic close to his heart, he decided to do what he was the best gifted to do in that field," says Yves Lermusi, CEO of Checkster, a company that offers career and talent checkup tools. "In short he didn't decide to design the new solar system, or to run a green company, what he decided to do was to speak and present the issue to forum across the world. Find your passion or find what holds meaning for you, but then ask the question: 'Where can my strengths be best used to support that passion?'"

DON'T: Burn bridges when you leave your job. Star Jones ended her tenure on ABC's "The View" with an abrupt on-air resignation that stunned her co-hosts and her fans.

"You've worked very hard to establish a strong reputation at work -- don't blow it in your last days," says Levit. "You never know when you're going to need these people again. Do an excellent job transitioning your projects and lead your boss and colleagues to believe that you're genuinely sad about leaving -- even if it's not true. This is one case where a white lie won't hurt anyone."

Wisconsin (AP)  -- It was embarrassing enough that Mark Stahnke woke up in a neighbor's yard without his pants. Then he remembered they contained a cashier's check for $41,093, meant for his son, and several hundred dollars in cash.

But he got it all back Friday, including the pants, thanks to a man and his dog.

Stahnke said he doesn't know what happened between when he left the bar and when he woke up the next morning, and police were skeptical when he filed a report on Monday.

"We're used to hearing weird stories, but with his intoxication we figured this one would be different, that the amount of money wouldn't be exact," Police Lt. William Graham said. "How do you get so intoxicated that you lose your pants?"

Stahnke said he had met his son at a bar and doesn't remember much afterward.

"I woke up cold not knowing where the heck I was, and I didn't realize it at first because I still had my shoes and socks on," he said. "When I got up, I realized, my God, I don't have any pants."

Tim Curzan's dog, Joe, found the pants at an intersection, according to a police report. He found the cashier's check and tried twice, unsuccessfully, to deliver it and the cash to where he thought the owner lived.

The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defence department, say American officials.

The Pentagon acknowledged shutting down part of a computer system serving the office of Robert Gates, defence secretary, but declined to say who it believed was behind the attack.

Current and former officials have told the Financial Times an internal investigation has revealed that the incursion came from the People’s Liberation Army.

One senior US official said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origins of the attack. Another person familiar with the event said there was a “very high level of confidence...trending towards total certainty” that the PLA was responsible. The defence ministry in Beijing declined to comment on Monday.

Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, raised reports of Chinese infiltration of German government computers with Wen Jiabao, China’s premier, in a visit to Beijing, after which the Chinese foreign ministry said the government opposed and forbade “any criminal acts undermining computer systems, including hacking”.

“We have explicit laws and regulations in this regard,” said Jiang Yu, from the ministry. “Hacking is a global issue and China is frequently a victim.”

George W.?Bush, US president, is due to meet Hu Jintao, China’s president, on Thursday in Australia prior to the Apec summit.

The PLA regularly probes US military networks â€" and the Pentagon is widely assumed to scan Chinese networks â€" but US officials said the penetration in June raised concerns to a new level because of fears that China had shown it could disrupt  systems at critical times.

“The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system...and the ability in a conflict situation to re-enter and disrupt on a very large scale,” said a former official, who said the PLA had penetrated?the?networks?of US defence companies and think-tanks.

Hackers from numerous locations in China spent several months probing the Pentagon system before overcoming its defences, according to people familiar with the matter.

General Topic / Asphalt Can Now Be Recycled
September 04, 2007, 06:37:38 AM
By Michael Kanellos
CNET News.com

San Francisco currently recycles 15 percent of the asphalt that gets churned up when streets get repaved, but the city has a new machine that will help boost the total to 35 percent, according to Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The city has bought a mobile recycling unit that goes to sites where streets are being ripped up and recycles it, he said while chatting with reporters at a press event for Tesla Motors.

There has been concern about the quality of the recycled asphalt, he said, but it seems to work now. The city unveiled the machine yesterday at a press conference.

On other green notes, the city will look into free or subsidized parking and other perks for electric car owners, he said. Newsom used to own a General Motors EV-1, the all-electric car that GM briefly marketed.

"It was the greatest thing in the world," he said. He did, however, run out of power twice. Once the meter said he had three miles to go, but it conked after one mile. "It was my fault, not the car's," he added.

Health and Food / Papaya: An Aphrodisiac?
September 04, 2007, 06:18:12 AM
By Eric Lyne
Farrago Column
Bohol Sunday Post

Good morning to all my friends again, did you have a good week, we all talk to much, what heartaches are caused, homes broken up, friends estranged, wars incited by some hasty, angry words.

Much of the conflict in the world is caused by a combination of a narrow mind and a wide mouth. You will seldom get in trouble by listening, and most of us can learn more from what others say than what we have to say.

Now, of course we should talk about our savior and tell others about his love.

Someone once said, if you talk when you are angry, you will male the best speech you will always regret. I have a confession to make, many of the troubles I've encountered in the past, I brought on myself because I opened my mouth at the wrong time.

Think back on your own life and consider how much heartache was caused because you were not swift to hear, slow to speak. Nothing is opened by mistake more often than the mouth. Think about it.

Lets pause for a moment:
There are some silent people
Whose praises should be sung
They preach a mighty sermon
By guarding well their tongue.
If you don't hold your tongue
You may have to eat your words.

Our topic - In my research this week, I came across these benefits for using papaya, many of you Filipinos might not believe that papaya, the fruit that is known to control libido, might also be an aphrodisiac. But it is used in Guatemala as such, this can be verified on internet - howstuffworks.com. It also states that papaya increases the female libido, and that the fruit has compounds that act as the female hormone estrogen.

It has also been used as a folk remedy in promoting menstruation and milk production after giving birth. Whether papaya is an aphrodisiac for men or women or not at all for both sexes, is just a trivial issue compared to the multitude of health benefits it gives.

The Philippine Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) says that the milky juice that comes out from the unripe papaya fruit when damaged is a good digestive aid. It stimulates the secretion of gastric juice, hence, it is used in case'' of stomach discomfort like dyspepsia.

Commonly used as a cooking ingredient, the unripe or green papaya also has a digestive enzyme called papain which tenderizes meat. Papain is also used as a digestive aid and is said to have anti-inflammatory benefits. FNRI also states that it can prevent diseases. It is reported that this front which is also used in confectionery and as an ingredient in juices, salads, pies, jam and jelly is rich in antioxidants such as folic acid, fiber, carotene's, vitamin C and E.

These antioxidants, promote the health of the cardiovascular system and provide protection against colon cancer. Papaya also contains vitamin A, a very powerful antioxidant like vitamins C and E, because of its concentration of pro-vitamin A carotenoid phytonutrients. It also adds, that these nutrients help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol adding that when cholesterol becomes oxidized, it sticks to and builds up in blood vessel walls and forms into dangerous plaques that can eventually cause heart attacks or strokes.

Folic Acid found in papaya is needed for the conversion of a substance called homocysteine, and amino acid. If unconverted, homocysteine can directly damage blood vessel walls and if levels get too high, it is considered a significant risk factor to heart and stroke attacks.

Check again internet - WHFOODS.ORG - they say one way in which dietary vitamin E and vitamin C may exert this effect is through their suggested association with a compound called paraoxonase, an enzyme that inhibits LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol oxidation.

FNRI also states that the papaya fruit, which is rich in fiber, prevents and eases constipation because the fiber binds cancer toxins in the colon and keeps them away from the healthy colon cells. It also prevents atherosclerosis and diabetes.

Again according to the "WHFOODS.ORG", a papaya weighing 304 grams has 187.87 mg of vitamin C or 313.1 percent of the daily value, hence it is rated as excellent.

For a food to be rated excellent, the website explained, its nutrient content must be equivalent or more than the 75 percent of the daily required value.

On the other hand, the folate and potassium content of papaya is rated very food. To have such a rating, the nutrient content has to be equivalent to or more than 50 percent of the required daily value. Papaya's fiber, vitamins A,E and K are rated very good. This means they are equivalent to or more than 25 percent of the required daily value.

The department of agriculture reported that papaya is a luscious reported that papaya is a luscious fruit that has been taken for granted, it also notes that the total crop area in the Philippines planted to papaya is only 8,720 hectares or only 0.1 percent of agricultural land. This seems so wrong considering its many health benefits. So come on farmers, plant some.

Take care see you next week.

It was a bruising fight to the finish with all three contenders still confident of winning even at the last minute.

But halfway into the counting, it became evident that only one winner
has the commanding lead to pull away from the rest of the field.

Thus, when the smoke of the battle for the Philippine Councilors League, Bohol chapter presidency cleared, it became certain that the best man won. He was Brigido "Boy" Imboy, municipal councilor of Loay who was seeking reelection as PCL president.

Left to bite the dust were two equally determined aspirants-Tita Gallentes of G-Hernandez and City Councilor Danilo Bantugan.

Imboy polled 269 votes pulling a monumental upset over his two opponents whose total score combined can not even overhaul the lead mustered by the winner. Gallentes only managed to collect 148 votes while Bantugan came in third with 44 votes.

Lopsided at best, the Imboy camp made it so, apparently because it left no stone unturned.

Playing a key role in the Imboy triumph was his wife Loay Mayor May Lim-Imboy. She was said to be her lucky charm and secret weapon.

There were reports of massive vote buying on the part of the Imboy group but this was promptly denied. In denying the vote buying raps, the Imboy camp said, it was the PCL president's performance that propelled him to victory.

LEVEL PLAYING FIELD

Three days into the run-up to the PCL presidential derby, it was apparent that nobody can claim that he was way ahead of the pack. It was anybody's game from there.

Adding excitement to the highly- charged PCL elections was the unexpected entry of businessman Angelo Balili who threw his lot to the bid of Gallentes.

Interviewed during DYTR's Cuentas Claras radio program, Balili said he was trying to level the playing field by denying Imboy the upper hand of the electoral exercise.

Also calling his support to Gallentes as the great equalizer, Balili whose penchant for one liners is legendary said, he just wanted to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Clearly directed to Imboy's much vaunted logistical muscle, Balili's clout was nowhere to be found when it was needed most.

All told, the promise of a level playing field was nothing more than an unforgiving terrain for his candidate Gallentes .As Imboy raced to the finish line like a bullet train, what was touted early on as the man to beat in the three-way fight for the PCL presidency, was never been truer.

Packaged as a close encounter of the beauty (Gallentes), the best (Imboy) and the brightest(Bantugan), it is now settled that the best man wins.

It was unfortunate for a world class resort like the Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa to have been the object of bad publicity the past week.

But that is going ahead of the story. First the good news.

The good news was that the posh resort owned by the Lims was where President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her presidential guards stayed overnight in a recent trip to Bohol.

A little birdie told this Bglante that during a program held in barangay Tawala, the President was quoted as saying that she was quartered during her "private time" in a world class resort. And that is the Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa.

For the resort and its owners it was a propaganda mouthful. Coming as it did from no less than the highest official of the country, what else would you consider that complimentary remarks other than being a marketing coup?

But make no mistake. This is no brief of the new resort. We are just being generous of a lavish praise due it.

But the main beef of this thesis is all about the bad publicity generated by the resort as a result of last week's robbery incident.

We are taking the cudgels for the resort because as a Boholano we feel it is our duty to protect the interest of those who are willing to sink millions of pesos to build a world class resort like the Eskaya. In fact, we are enamored with the fact that so many investors are putting where their investment mouths are in Panglao because they are attracted to the natural allure of the island.

It was disheartening to note that Eskaya after all the good raves it got was in the news allegedly because it was used as the sanctuary of some of the robbery suspects who pulled off the Bank of Commerce robbery.

If it was meant to be a joke, then we can say that it was a cruel one.

Whoever peddled the lies that the robbery suspects checked in at the Eskaya must have an axe to grind against the resort owner.

The bad publicity was in the form of a news story that appeared in the Sun Star-Cebu in its August 30 issue.

According to the resort's legal counsel, Alexander Lim, Sun Star published a news item showing that the robbers checked in at the beach resort.

Nothing is farther from the truth, Lim contended.

He said police records showed that the robbers were billeted at the Dumaluan Beach Resort in Bolod, Panglao and not at the Eskaya.

Lim also pinpointed Station DYRD as the source of the Sun Star story. But in a check with Peter Dejaresco, DYRD station manager, he clarified that he can say with a straight face that nothing negative came out from their twin media outfits (DYRD and Bohol Chronicle) about Eskaya being the check-in quarters of the rob suspects.

In our own verification process, we found nothing in the robbery story of the Bohol Chronicle last Wednesday showing that Eskaya was mentioned in the incident.

If indeed, the negative story did see print, we hope that the Sun Star editors will rectify the same and make the necessary correction.

Jagna - Bohol / Cock Hits Man in Jagna, Bohol
September 04, 2007, 06:07:07 AM
Written By Joe Espiritu
Columnist
Bohol Sunday Post

Last Sunday there was an accident. A gaffed cock hit a man. The wound must have hit a major blood vessel because the bleeding was strong. The victim was brought to the hospital but the doctor could have only tied off the severed blood vessel since there are no operating facilities and sent the man to Tagbilaran where his vein or artery could be rejoined. If there had been no first aid performed on the man he could have bled to death before he was transported.

While safety rules in a cock derby are followed, they are not imposed in Sunday bouts. During derbies, the only persons allowed in the fenced area are the official handlers, one for each cock; the referee and the authorized house bet caller, he who places bets uncovered by the major bettors or the masa. If the remaining bets are not covered, they offer odds, which gradually rise until they are accepted.

The bout starts with the handlers making their charges peck at each other to rouse their fighting fury, bare the gaffs and places the cocks on the starting line at the same time. If the fight does not start immediately, they perform the routine all over again. Once the fight starts, the handlers leave the rueda or the fenced arena and come back only to pick up the contestants.

Sometimes, those rules are waived if the cock owners are so influential with the management that they stay in the rueda until the particular bout is over. In this case, if an accident happens during the fight, the victim cannot sue the management since he entered the rueda at his own risk. In Sunday fights, those rules are more honored in breach than in observance as the trite saying goes.

Cock fanciers sometimes mistake temperament with gameness. A mean tempered cock is expected never to run away from the enemy even at the point of death. This is far from true. Man fighters had been observed running away from the fight.

Neither is temper a sign Cock fanciers sometimes mistake temperament with gameness. A mean tempered cock is expected never to run away from the enemy even at the point of death. This is far from true. Man fighters had been observed running away from the fight. Neither is temper an mdication of fighting ability. Vicious cocks can also be mediocre combatants.

Being in the arena with a heeled cock with a bared gaff is dangerous. Sometimes, even the most even-tempered rooster will take on anyone during the battle fury.

The worst are the man fighters. They will hit anybody even without provocation.

They refuse to be handled by anyone. Experienced handlers only pick them up by the back feathers while distracted. Disaster awaits those who pick them up by the tail.

Those with severe hypertension and heart trouble should never enter a cocking arena. They may suffer strokes or heart attacks during the heat of the fight.

Several deaths had been recorded caused by the excitement. While accidents may be prevented by prohibiting incompetents from handling gaffed fighters, the management has no way of banning those who has such ailment. It would be ironic if the owner would die before his contestant.

A dismissed government employee Friday has "sang like a canary" denouncing in the process, her former employer, G-Hernandez Mayor Myrna Scheurs, of wrong doing including cornering local government transactions in the name of a family-owned business establishment.

Arlene Sayson, a native of Ubay town but employed as clerk and cashier of Mayor Scheurs since 2002 until 2006, filed Friday before the office of the National Labor Relations (NLRC) a case of illegal dismissal after her former employer terminated her services "in a fit of unreasonable and jealous rage."

The lady mayor is married to a Dutch national identified as Wilhelmus Scheurs.

The Post texted at least two times Mayor Scheurs for her reaction regarding the accusations of her former employee. She answered the first text with the question "who was the complainant?" Nothing was heard from her after telling her about the complainant's name. For the last time yesterday, a follow-up was made of her reaction but no answer came.

Among other damaging allegations, Sayson, during her four-year employment of the Scheurs' detailed how she was used as dummy of at least three business entities owned by the G-Hernandez mayor and her husband. The three firms are Bohol Rice and Corn Mill, Bohol Rice Mill, and Bohol General Merchandise. Two other entities- -G-Hernandez General Merchandise and G-Hernandez Builders and Supply were also owned by the Scheurs. All five establishments have the same address as East Canayaon, G-Hernandez, Bohol.

The lady mayor only "divested" ownership of the business outfits shortly after she was elected as town executive in 2001.

Technology / TorrentSpy No Longer Available in the U.S.
September 04, 2007, 06:02:33 AM
By Greg Sandoval
CNET News.com

TorrentSpy.com, the BitTorrent tracking site facing a copyright lawsuit from the motion picture industry, is shutting down access to users in the United States, the company said in a statement late Sunday night.

The barring of U.S. residents by TorrentSpy comes as a U.S. district judge is expected to rule any day on whether TorrentSpy must turn over its user information to the Motion Picture Association of America. That group filed a civil complaint against the company last year accusing TorrentSpy of violating copyright law.

"TorrentSpy's decision to stop accepting U.S. visitors was not compelled by any court," according to a statement from the company. "Rather, it arises out of an uncertain legal climate in the United States regarding user privacy and the apparent tension between U.S. and European Union Internet privacy laws."

The company also said that because its servers are located in the Netherlands, the site will remain accessible to users outside of the United States.

Step 1: Understanding
Understanding what makes these people the way they are is important. The one thing abusive, dysfunctional managers seem to have in common is that they're acting out on you because of their own issues that have absolutely nothing to do with you.

That knowledge may help you sleep better at night, but it's more important that you develop some empathy for the poor bastard and gain some perspective. Remember that he's human and has faults, just like everyone else. Moreover, you just work for him. You can quit. He has to live with himself every day for the rest of his life.

Step 2: Strategy
There's an old Japanese proverb: If you wait by the river long enough, you'll see the body of your enemy float by. One way of handling an abusive boss is to wait her out. On the other hand, "long enough" can be a mighty long time. While you're waiting by the river, you should use what you learned in step 1 to gain some perspective.

If you harbor negative feelings toward your boss, they'll surely leak out from time to time. You may not notice, but others will and so will she. Try to curb those feelings. Don't go over her head and don't go toe to toe with her. If you do, you may win the battle, but you'll surely lose the war.

Instead, find a way to respect your boss for what she does well and use your strengths to complement her weaknesses. Whether she's willing to admit it or not, she needs you or you wouldn't be there.

Step 3: Practice
Next time your boss pisses you off, just remember that it's not your fault; he's only human; he has some strengths or he wouldn't be your boss; and he needs you to help him out or you wouldn't be there. Lastly, you can always quit, but he still has to live with himself. And that's probably why he's abusive to begin with.

It's hard at first, but with practice, it gets easier and eventually becomes second nature. Using this method, I survived an abusive CEO for two years until the board canned him. It really works. I'm also relatively sure that employees have used a similar process on me. That's right, I'm a reformed abusive boss.

If the process fails for some reason, remember that karma will surely catch up with your abusive manager and reincarnate him or her as a dung beetle.

If you end up losing the war and getting terminated, be sure to remember my favorite parting line, "I've been fired by better people."

"Opera 9.5 Alpha is scheduled to be released tomorrow, and CyberNet has a review of the browser's new features based on preview code. Some of the most prominent new options include a full history search, bookmark and Speed Dial syncing, and an 'Open with' menu option to pull up a website in another browser that's installed on your PC. 'This is one of those things that I had said Opera needs to work on the most.

By this point, most Firefox users have grown accustomed to keeping their bookmarks synchronized with an online service. Now Opera users will have the same pleasure! All you need is a free My Opera account, and you'll be able to privately synchronize your bookmarks, Speed Dial sites, and Personal Bar with their server. You'll then be able to access that data whether you're at work, home, or anywhere!

To setup synchronization just select the "Synchronize with My Opera" option from the File Menu.' There's also a video to go along with the text."

"Michael Righi was arrested in Ohio over the weekend after refusing to show his receipt when leaving Circuit City.

When the manger and 'loss prevention' employee physically prevented the vehicle he was a passenger in from leaving the parking lot, he called the police, who arrived, searched his bag and found he hadn't stolen anything.

The officer then asked for Michael's driver's license, which he declined to provide since he wasn't operating a motor vehicle.

The officer then arrested him, and upon finding out Michael was legally right about not having to provide a license, went ahead and charged him with 'obstructing official business' anyways."

Bohol Sunday Post

There is no local government unit the country (be it a province, city or municipality) with a Deputy. Only Tagbilaran City has a Deputy Mayor. And that distinction is held by Mr. Mariano Lim Uy (MLU) of Miravilla and Bohol International Learning Center.

An entrepreneur through-and-through, he is back in Bohol for good, after several years of lucrative handicraft business in California. He built Miravilla Resort in a place a few thought was far from where the action is. With the influx of people who sampled and savored the restaurant's seafoods, Miravilla became an added attraction to the City's booming tourism industry.

It was while he was in USA that his concern for the plight of Boholanos, caused by poverty, started to take form. He started with "Bundles of Joy" he bought to Tagbilaran at least once a year, some contributed by Tagbilaranons in California, but most from his own pocket. Other agencies, like the City Police Department, became recipients of his benevolence.

When he finally decided to settle back in Tagbilaran City, he became a regular donor to some projects, especially those initiated and spearheaded by the City Government. This involvement did not go unnoticed. Mayor Dan Neri Lim appointed him Deputed Mayor with a one-peso token remuneration annually. On July 31, 2006 the City Government opened "Botika sa Katawhan", which gives free medicines to indigents and Senior Citizens of the City. The sourcing of these medicines is handled by Mr. Mariano Uy himself - with help from other generous benefactors in the USA.

Mr. Uy was reluctant to have this interview. It took some time before he was persuaded to answer some questions about his latest contribution to the welfare of the people. Facilitated by Mrs. Lucille Yap Lagunay, who painstakingly prepared the questions, and hounded Mr. Uy to spare some 20 minutes of his time, the interview finally materialized.

LMP: What prompted you to be involved in the Botika sa Katawhan?
MLU: Poverty. Ang kalisud sa mga tawo sa Bohol. Wa koy nakita nga namatay sa gutom, pero daghan kog nadunggan nga namatay sa sakit ug wa nadapati sa saktong tambal. As project implementor of the Tagbilaran Association of Southern California, mas maayo pa nga mohatag ug tambal kay sa Bundle of Joy, but it does not mean we stop the project. The Bundle of Joy will give them happiness for just a few days but ang pagluwas sa kinabuhi will give them a lifetime of joy.

LMP: When you presented this project to the City Mayor, did he readily accept it?
MLU: I discussed this with Mayor Dan for possible support. To fully implement the Botika we needed a place for the Botika and budget for employees' salaries and wages, payment for equipment: aircon, refrigerator, computer, etc. Mayor Dan gave his approval immediately and asked me to talk to Dr. Benjamin Galia who was the City Health Officer at that time. I also presented the idea to VM Montes and the members of the 9th SP who, in support of the project, enacted an ordinance creating the Botika sa Katawhan. I talked to a lot of doctors and convinced them to give free consultations to the beneficiaries of the Botika sa Katawhan. To date, we have approximately 20 accredited doctors. We have doctors in all public and private hospitals in the city.

LMP: Would you like to consider yourself as a good Samaritan, most specifically because this takes much of your time and energy?
MLU: It is true that it eats up a lot of my time. As a retiree, having stayed in the US for more than 25 years, it's about time I dedicate my time to give service to the people of Tagbilaran.

LMP: We understand that this project has some benefactors aside from you. How did you encourage contributions to this project? Did you have a problem along this line?
MLU: This project started when Dr. Eduardo Osea from Masbate gave me all his medicine samples. I turned over the medicine samples to Dr. Sharleen Lim for her free clinics in the barangays. Not everyone you talk to is convinced and willing to give their samples and support the project but this did not deter me from continuing to ask for support. The Tagbilaran Association of Southern California strongly supports this project especially its President, Dr. Anita Cal Jackson who gave all her samples. I'm also getting support locally, like Hans Schoof.

LMP: So far, how much money in particular has been put up for the project?
MLU: We have distributed almost P5M worth of medicines.

LMP: What percentage came from your pocket?
MLU: It is very hard to mention percentage. I give on a monthly basis, as the need arises. I always fill in what is needed to sustain the operation of the Botika sa Katawhan. Sometimes, I spend a lot, sometimes, not much. When we get a lot of donations, my counterpart becomes lesser. Miravilla is a charity restaurant. A big portion of the income of Miravilla is used to support the Botika sa Katawhan. A portion of every peso spent at Miravilla goes to the Botika sa Katawhan. The Botika sa Katawhan is thankful to the customers of Miravilla. Most of the expenses are spent transporting the medicines from other states to California, then to the Philippines. I buy medicines in the US because it is cheaper there. There are no vitamin samples, they have to be purchased. We also have to buy some medicines locally because we cannot get samples from the States.

LMP: How did your family take this new venture considering that it would also affect them?
MLU: I am very happy that I have the full support of my family, knowing that this is a noble project. We are not considering any return because we are not after any political position. We just want to serve our people. Each one of us should do the same. Instead of asking what the government can do for us we should ask ourselves what we can share to help the government serve its people. I am happy that my family is willing to share the income of Miravilla nga ma-enjoy unta nila. I always make use of the people whom I know to obtain help for our people. When I was Consultant and Technical Adviser of Senate President Marcelo Fernan, I was given blanket authority to approve and release funding from his pork barrel. I was able to give about P70M worth of projects in Bohol. Because of my friendship with Mayor Tomas Osmeña, I was able to secure traffic lights for Tagbilaran during the term of Mayor JVT.

LMP: Considering that you are a prosperous businessman, and therefore with limited time for any other undertaking, how much time have you put up for this project, and how did it affect your schedule?
MLU: All my time is already dedicated to the Botika sa Katawhan. Even when I go to the US, the Botika sa Katawhan occupies my time. In my one-week stay, I made orders, purchased vitamins, etc….

LMP: Do you believe that this is a consistent undertaking? If you are going to make a time frame for this project, how long will it last?
MLU: This will go on for as long as I am strong enough and as long as I have the support from the City Government. That is why I will always be thankful to Mayor Dan Neri Lim for his all out support to the Botika sa Katawhan; because if not for him, this project will just be a dream in my heart and I will have difficulties implementing the project.

LMP: From feedback gathered, has there been much acceptance by the public? What are the usual comments that they made about this undertaking?
MLU: We have very good feedback especially from the beneficiaries. Many of the critics of the project are those who have not been given approval to be recipient of the project because of their income bracket P6,000 and below income per household. We started with 2,500 beneficiary households about a year ago and after nine months we increased to 6,500 families. I have plans of expanding it with the series of fund raising activities and the increasing support of the project. I hope and pray that I will be able to increase the beneficiary families to as much as 13,000 to 14,000 households within two years.

LMP: Is there any political motive that came to your mind when you conceptualized this move? Is this solely for public benefit without waiting for anything in return? How about those people, if any, who are convinced that this project has political motives, what can you say to them?
MLU: Many thought I was doing this because of some political interest. They thought I would be running for City Councilor. They can always think that way, but what they are thinking is not what I am thinking. I strongly denied it on paper and radio during my interviews that I am not interested in running for any position because if ever I do that my purpose for truly serving the people will be defeated.

LMP: What kind of fulfillment have you derived from Botika sa Katawhan? We understand it is unquantifiable, but what is its direct effect on you and your well-being?
MLU: Very, very fulfilling. They should be there and observe how happy these people feel when they get their medicines for free. You should see how thankful they are. Some very poor people even donate P1 or P2 so they can be part of this noble project. God knows how happy I am. The happiness I feel is better than counting money and putting it in my pocket. I will continue my crusade and expand the service if God gives me more years to live. I will try that one day all people in Tagbilaran will get their medicines for free. Today, it is just a dream. With your help and the help of those financially capable of helping, this dream will materialize, I always pray that the day will come.

Some years back, BAHRR (Bohol Association of Hotels Resorts and Restaurants) was at its lowest ebb, with a leadership that seemed floundering. As Head of the Management Sector of TIPC (Tripartite Industrial Peace Council) I initiated a reorganization of the group, considering its vital role in the tourism industry. In a meeting at the Flamingo Room of Bohol Tropics Resort, I acted as Presiding Officer, highlighted by the election of officers. Mr. Mariano Uy was elected President of BAHRR. For more than three years he introduced various changes to the group, until it was resuscitated and able to move forward, before he relinquished the reins to another President.

This time he can concentrate to Botika sa Katawhan, a legacy that has won his wisdom and passion.

5.  Then, I tried to be a Chef - figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn't have the thyme.

6.  Next, I attempted to be a Deli Worker, but any way I sliced it I couldn't cut the mustard.

8.  I studied a long time to become a Doctor, but I didn't have any patience.

9.  Next, was a job in a Shoe Factory. I tried but I just didn't fit in.

10.  I became a Professional Fisherman, but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.

11.  I managed to get a good job working for a Pool Maintenance Company, but the work was just too draining.

12.  So then I got a job in a Workout Center but they said I wasn't fit for the job.

13.  After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a Historian - until I realized there was no future in it.

14.  My last job was working in Starbucks, but I had to quit because e it was always the same old grind.

15.  SO, I TRIED RETIREMENT AND FOUND THAT I'M PERFECT FOR THE JOB!

Philippine Laws / Katas ng Saudi
September 03, 2007, 11:16:40 PM
Written By RICARDO F. LO
The Philippine Star

It’s a movie Joey Reyes has been wanting to do all these years. And when Maverick Films commissioned him to do it, he jumped for joy, seized the chance. The movie in reference is Katas ng Saudi, which captures the joy and pain of families torn apart because a parent has to work abroad to give loved ones a better tomorrow.

Direk Joey is interested in, fascinated by stories of  OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) and the families left behind, some of whom are relatives and friends. He listened â€" he still does â€" to their heartbreaking and inspiring tales, jotted them down for a movie he was hoping to do in the future.

Katas ng Saudi is Pinoy na Pinoy, showing how much a parent will sacrifice for his family. The story refers to a  father working in the Middle East, but it may well be the story of a Filipino parent, a sister or brother, aunt or uncle toiling in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Australia, US or Canada, Europe, Africa.

Sounds like a tearjerker?
Joey says not really. Katas ng Saudi has many light moments, but in the end, “May kirot o kurot sa puso. You laugh then you cry.”

Pinoy na Pinoy, indeed. Trust a kababayan to find humor in the most trying moments.

Jinggoy Estrada plays the father who returns to Manila after spending 10 years in Saudi Arabia. He returns to a home he finds completely different, despite the efforts of his wife (Lorna Tolentino) to make it appear nothing has changed. His children do not know him.

His only daughter (Shaina Magdayao) is now a young lady studying in a private school and gravitating around a social class that looks down on the common worker. She is spoiled by her grandmother (Liza Lorena) and feels no affection for the absentee father.

His eldest son (Arron Villaflor) has become a computer nerd who can’t relate to his father, while his youngest, a boy (Julian Estrada), does not even recognize the father he never saw in his entire life. Julian, a student of Xavier in San Juan City, is introduced in the movie. Yes, Julian is Jinggoy’s son.

The Saudi worker, doing his best to be a good husband and father, confronts a series of disastrous situations. He does not approve of his daughter’s sosyal friends, especially the young man she’s going out with (Rayver Cruz).

Making the situation worse is his own mother (Vangie Labalan) and sister (Eugene Domingo) and her bum husband (Dick Israel) depend on him for their financial expenses. He feels eternally entrapped by his family obligations. Even his friends expect him to dole out money for the emergency needs since, after all, he is a dollar earner.

Research firm Neal Nelson reports that AMD Beats Intel in 36 of 57 Power Efficiency Tests. Nelson’s firm has a long history of data processing consulting to some of the world’s largest computer customers including the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, the Internal Revenue Service, McDonalds, WalMart and Federal Express. Nelson’s benchmarking laboratory is available to commercial and government users for independent computer performance tests.

AMD is clearly the leader when it comes to performance per watt using the workloads in this article. What is interesting to note is that AMD’s advantage isn’t at the processor level, but instead it’s related to the fact that they don’t use fully buffered DIMMs. Obviously, the measurements we took of each component aren’t precise - it’s just about impossible to do that (at least without sophisticated equipment). However, we can safely draw the conclusion that there is a lot more to power consumption than the CPU itself.
