Miss Grazie,
I spent a day (in an outreach program) in Mother Teresa's home for orphaned and abandoned kids in Pasil years ago. It was one of the most difficult experiences of my life, seeing deformed kids abandoned by parents who didn't want freaks for children, kids orphaned and rescued from the streets, kids who were unloved and unwanted by their own blood. But a child's resilience is a true testament of the beauty and strength of the human soul, because while I was crying my heart out, the kids around me were all smiling, all seemingly happy to see us. All I saw was the misery of their condition, but they were just happy to be alive. Still, I couldn't help but feel guilty, feel that it was unfair, unjust...that I had a happy childhood, loved by my family...and those kids didn't have any of that. In a perfect world, every kid should have a happy childhood. But wishful thinking is all it is.
I have great respect and admiration for people who choose to live their lives serving others, who are missionaries, who choose to witness and live amongst misery, poverty, desolation...they have strength of will that I will never have. I cannot see suffering and despair every single day, all year round...it'll be my destruction, I know I'll just fall apart. I'll probably kill myself like the little girl did.
Honestly, Ms Grazie, when I see these things, esp. when it concerns little children...I still ask why. I still don't get it and I never will. I try to reason within myself, ma'g intellectualize, even tell myself about God and redemption and Heaven...but I witness suffering and it still knocks me breathless, and no amount of intellectualizing relieves that first wave of hopelessness I feel.
I still ask why. And I still don't get it. It's so hard to give reason to something so unreasonable.
Ikaw, naa kay guess?

I myself have reacted "vehemently" to one of the comments you have posted in another thread, which I felt characterized the Boholanos wholesale in a negative light.
I guess it's a real challenge to see things from an objective point of view. Sometimes we react to what we perceive as another's bias with another bias.
The best thing we can do is to be aware that we always have a perspective when we look at things. That perspective is influenced by our upbringing, education, environment, cultural values, etc.
So when we exchange views, let us be open to the perspectives of others and try to be sensitive to where he or she is coming from. Let's remind ourselves that we are not diminished by people who take views contrary to ours. I believe that every point of view can either reinforce ours--when it's agreeable--or refine it--when it is contrary. In this sense, every opinion, negative or positive, is always worth something.
ok, than me! heheheh Thanks for sharing your thoughts. smiffytheninja!
