Bisag bisi kaayo musingit sa ko kay I was thinking about putting this thread last night. You just beat me to this, Mike! Don't you guys think we're thinking more and more on the same wavelength, if not altogether alike?

So one of my best reads is Stephen R. Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Naa ra ba'y quotation ang author, si Covey, dinhi sa libro gikan ni Aristotle that TB tambays should ponder:

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
                                                         -- Aristotle

Bene,

My books are nearly 1,000 - personal collection. They're kept in Dampas at the house that I rented before. I couldn't transport them to Thailand. Now I have hundreds of ebooks. :)

I have been intending to read Stephen Covey's book but I was always sidetracked by other pursuits. Management consultants would always recommend this book.

That could be possible. Our President can easily change her mind.

"Ug Ang Mga Angheles ug Serapines Miingon Santo, Santo"
gisulat ni mike ligalig

(for my mother and for my sister)

Miluhod si Mama
Miluhod akong manghod
Miluhod sab ko
Magpayong ba ta ani?
Namaak ang adlaw
Dagkoti sa nang kandila
Asa na tong posporo?
Sampongi, sampongi
Tan-awa, napawong hinuon
Ayaw irog-iroga nang lata
Mayabo nang tubig
Malawos ang mga bulak
Pinangayo ra ba na
Ma, ang supas giamigas na
Dalia ra sab nakamatikod
Ang biko napan-os na ni
Naa pa bay nabilin sa kaha?
Kaonon ra nang pagkaon
Sa inyong magulang unya
Unya, mabusog pud si Jun-jun, Ma?
Ah, simhoton lang na
Agay! Gipaak kog amigas!
Ayaw paglangas diha, Abing!
Ma, gipaningot akong likod
Naay labakara sa bag, trapohi
Oy, napalong na pud ang kandela!
Asa na tong posporo?
Abing, ayaw lagi dulai nang kandela!
Masuko na gyud ni si Mama
Oy, nganong milingkod man ka?
Hala, luhod, luhod ug balik
Mangluod inyong magulang
Luhod balik, Bing, hoy
Padamgohon gani ka ni Jun-jun
Ayaw namo pagtabi
Matugaw mga silingang lubong
Ma, kaihion kono si Abing
Didto lang likod sa kapilya
Ma, naa kahay gamba diri?
Pamung napud ug gamba
Aron latoson napud ka sa imong Papa
Bing, asa na tong akong tubig?
Giuhaw ko, Ma
Ayawg inom, wa ka pa kapaniudto
Makapasmo na, unya nalang
Sima-sima sa ug supas
Ma, moadto nalang ta ila Gonda
Palit ta sikwate ug bibingka
Ganina ra tong buntag nahurot
Didto nalang ta sa merkado, Ma
Mahal didto, mamauli ta
Daghan pa tong bahaw sa balay
Tua pay tinughong nabilin ganina
Asa na tong nobenahan
Giluklok ni Abing sa tsinelas, Ma
Pilpilon ko man nang kamot nimo
Sige, pagpuyo na mo
Bing, ikaw nalay hawid sa pajong
Ug ikaw ra diay?!
Ma, di mohawid si Abing sa pajong
Ikaw nalang
Bing, ikaw nalang sampong sa kandela
Di ko init, wa man maghangin
Mokalit ra ni ug huros unja
Gutom na jud, Ma
Ako pud, Ma
Naa pay patatas ug mamon sa bag
Wa may lami ug way gatas
Oi, Baking, nganong nipungko man ka?
Sakit akong hawak, Ma
Pahiluna na mo mga anak
Mag-ampo na ta
"Ay miagi na kami
Nianang walog nga luhaan..."
Abing, ayaw lagi dulai nang kandila!
Ako lang gitapok ang nalanay
Himuon natong floorwax, Ma
Mura pug kugihan manglampaso
Di gani manghugas ug plato
"Ay miagi na kami
Nianang walog nga luhaan..."
Ma, murag naay labod mikamang
Dili na mamaak, ayaw pislata
Ma, napalong na pud ang kandela
Asa na tong posporo?
Hala, usa na ka bilog ang nabilin
Ma, katol akong likod
Ipakalot ni Abing
Di ko, nangaway na sija naho
Kay ikaw mam poy manguna!
Kay nanguna ba diay ko?!
Ajaw pagbinatod, ikaw bitaw
Pssstt, hilom na mo, mga anak
Respeto mo sa inyong igsuon
Makadungog pa ba si Jun-jun, Ma?
Maminaw ra na sila
Tua na ba sa langit si Jun-jun, Ma?
Mag-ampo na ta, anak
"Ay, miagi na kami
Nianang walog nga luhaan..."
Ma, manakop kog alindanaw
Paghilom lagi
Hala, sabat, sabat
Iyawat kaluy-an ta sa Ginoo
Moapas ba si Papa, Ma?
Duty pa sa munisipyo
Hubog na pud to mopauli, Ma?
Maayo lang unta ug wa katagay
"Ay, miagi na kami
Nianang walog nga luhaan...
Ug ang mga angheles ug serapines
Miingon santo, santo..."

Facts and Trivia / Bigger and Better
September 13, 2007, 06:52:05 AM
Bigger and Better

Bigger and Better is a team building activity in which teams compete by trading ordinary objects. The winner is the team that ends up with the biggest and best items when time expires.

This active teambuilding exercise requires six people at minimum, and can support very large groups if the teams are divided evenly. Teams should be about three to six people in size. This game involves interacting with lots of strangers in a public place such as a school campus. Props required include small objects such as paper clips or pens (one for each team). Recommended age is 18 and up. This game can be played with adults and even in corporate settings. When playing with younger people, please be sure to provide proper supervision when necessary.

Setup for Bigger and Better

To prepare for Bigger and Better, get several paper clips or some small objects that are low in value. Be sure to have enough to provide one per team.

Playing Bigger and Better

Explain the rules to everyone: You will give each team a small object, and their job is to keep trading and upgrading their team’s object to obtain the largest and most valuable item possible. They may not offer anything other than the item they have, and they must stick together as a group. Set a time limit, such as one or two hours, and tell everyone that they must be back in time or else they will be disqualified. Announce that each team’s item will be judged in three categories: size, value, and creativity.

Divide the group into teams of three to six. Pass out the paper clip (or other small object) to the each group and send them off. When time expires, the judging process begins. Each team presents their item before the entire group. They explain why their item is biggest and best. At the end, choose winners for each of the three categories, or judge the items in any other way you wish. This activity involves good teamwork and creativity as each team coordinates their efforts and decides what strategies they will approach when playing. Camaraderie will be built, and surprises will come out of the activity. Who knows, a group might be able to turn a paper clip into a car! Well, maybe a toy car. (icebreakers.ws)

Di ba bag-o lang that a U.S. senator quit his post.

Mahadlok man gud mo-resign kay dili naman kapangapply ug laing trabaho ug wala nay income. Public funds have been used as "only source of income" for many politicians.

Problema man gud sa ato kay atong mga politicians wa kabalo unsay value ug work. We're sure that many of them don't know how to write a resume and submit it to a possible employer.

A congressman in Bohol - sa wala pa siya na-congressman, way balay, way sakyanan - when he became a congressman - naay mansion sa Cebu, sa Manila, sa Bohol, bisan asa pa - ug tinagutlo, tinagup-at ang sakyanan.

Sweldo ni gikan? NO. P40,000 a month ray salary ni Arroyo every month. Much lower ang congressman.

One of government initiatives that may never happen in the Philippines.

Sa atong kabukiran nga wala pay electricity, pagtingog sa mga timos inig kagabii ug pagbatog sa mga manok sa ilang katulgan, tambid na hangtud buntag.

Sometimes I wonder how a manananggot was able to raise 12 kids. Then I remember that God is gracious and merciful.

My grandfather (father's side) had (patay na sya and I miss him) 11 or 12 sisters and brothers (dead and still living) in the family.

Some of his sisters wala na mi kabalo asa sila, kinsa ila mga anak, kinsa ila mga apo.

In other countries, presidents or prime ministers even those who occupy lower posts (such as mayors, governors, congressmen who are in ), when they are in trouble, would usually quit their posts even if the allegations were not yet proven true.

Sa ato wa pa jud ta kadungog nga mo-resign despite all the crystal clear evidence of guiltiness.

My expose on the P200-million Talibon dam (a ghost project) is an example of how officials, despite compelling evidence presented, can be so callous, insensitive, unmanly that they would still hang onto their positions though they've lost all reasons to remains there.

Criteria: (vii)(viii)
Category: Natural
Submission prepared by:
Department of Environment and Natural resources (DENR) - Protected Areas and Wildfife Bureau

Description

Chocolate Hills and its immediate environs are relatively flat to rolling topography with elevation ranges from 100 m to 500 m above sea level. It has been declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument on June 18, 1988 in recognition of its scientific value and geomorphic uniqueness.

Similar to the formations found in Java, the conical and almost symmetrical and same-sized hills known as the "Chocolate Hills", are more aesthetically extensive. These were the uplift of coral deposits and the result of the action of rainwater and erosion. The hills are located throughout the towns of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan and consist of about 1,776 mounds of the same general shape. During the dry season when precipitation in inadequate, the grass-covered hills turn chocolate brown, hence the name in reference to a branded confection.

Justification for Outstanding Universal Value
Satements of authenticity and/or integrity:

It has been declared the country's 3rd National Geological Monument on June 18, 1988.

The hills are in the Philippine Tourism Authority's list of tourist destinations in the Philippines.
Comparison with other similar properties:

The only other known set of hills of similar configuration is that found in the island of Java in Indonesia. However, the hills found in Java are more irregular in shape and sizes, although these were in the generic conical forms.

Weird and Extreme / Will You Marry Our Daughters?
September 12, 2007, 08:08:40 PM
By Brad Stone
The New York Times

The parents of 15-year-old Rachel M. say that “being married is the only career” their daughter is interested in. They are seeking a man willing to pay $19,995 for her hand in marriage.

Kristin J., 16, has a wild streak but recently decided “it was time she settled down with a man who could meet her needs and help her fulfill her dreams of being an actor or singer.” Her parents are trying to sell their “fiery” daughter into matrimony for $49,995.

Or so go the personal ad listings on MarryOurDaughter.com, an outrageous Web site that purports to blithely sell underage girls to older husbands for large dowries.

The site is a prank. Thank goodness. (A fake website)

But not everyone is in on the joke. The site has gotten 20 million page views in the last two weeks and now elicits around a thousand, mostly angry, emails a day. In the last few days, the site’s “publicity director” has also appeared on at least half a dozen talk radio shows around the country, including on Las Vegas (MIX-FM), Houston (KRBE-FM) and Philadelphia (WYSP-FM) and mixed it up with belligerent on-air-personalities and hostile listeners, whom he neglected to let in on the ruse.

“People get angry so fast they don’t stop to question whether its real,” says the creator of MarryOurDaughter.com, John Ordover, who masqueraded as the site’s fictional publicity director, the unlikely surnamed Roger Mandervan.

Before Kathy Griffin won a creative arts Emmy last weekend for her reality show, "My Life on the D-List," she joked that an award would move her to the C-list.

She was right: "C" as in censored. The TV academy said her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown Saturday on the E! channel. The main prime-time Emmy Awards air the next night on Fox.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement Monday.

In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."

She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!"

I am disheartened by her speech for she blasphemed my God and my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

(Reuters) - An Italian comedian's campaign using a rude word to tell off politicians has won the support of more than 300,000 Italians who signed petitions to sweep away a generation of lawmakers they say are corrupt and ineffective.

Popular comic Beppe Grillo has sent shock waves through the political system with the level of support for his campaign which, if successful, would bar convicted felons from parliament and would limit politicians' careers to two terms in office.

An estimated 40,000 people attended Grillo's rally in Bologna on Saturday and many more went to hundreds of similar "Vaffanculo-day" protests around the country. The word is the Italian equivalent of the "f"-word in English.

Gaining grassroots support via his website, one of Italy's most popular blogs, the 57-year-old comic said Italy needed a radical break from what he said was the political mismanagement of Italy since the end of fascism and World War Two.

"Nothing has changed since 1943. Then the king fled a nation in disarray, today politicians barricade themselves in palaces immersed in 'cultural' issues," said Grillo who, by the end of the protest in the early hours of Sunday claimed at least 300,000 signatures to his petition.

The manifesto contains three points: no one with criminal records should be allowed in parliament; a maximum of two terms for any parliamentarian; and lawmakers should be elected directly, not by the current party list system.

ANTI-POLITICS

The campaign is another embarrassment for Italy's political class which for years has been characterised by back-biting, cronyism and sleaze.

Florida - A confessed rapist has agreed to be castrated in a plea deal that could save him from a life prison sentence.

Bobby James Allen pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of armed sexual battery and various other charges involving attacks that happened in 1998 and 1999. Allen filed a motion requesting castration in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Circuit Judge Michael Overstreet agreed to sentence Allen to 25 years' prison on Sept. 20 if has the procedure in the next eight days. If Allen does not go through with the operation, he faces up to life in prison.

"You understand that this procedure is the removal of your testicles?" Overstreet asked Allen.

Allen said he wanted to be castrated.

"I have spoken with all the victims," prosecutor Larry Basford told Overstreet. "They agree that this sentence punishes him and would deter him and others from similar acts."

Allen would be classified as a dangerous sexual offender and must serve every day of his 25-year sentence, prosecutors said.

Cosmetic procedures billed as ”vaginal rejuvenation,” “designer vaginoplasty” or even “revirgination” are not medically necessary and are not guaranteed to be safe, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists cautioned on Friday.

The group, which educates and accredits doctors who treat women and deliver babies, said it is deceptive to give the impression that any of these procedures are accepted or routine.

In guidance published in the September issue of its journal, Obstetrics & Gynecology, the group, known as ACOG, said the procedures can cause complications such as infection, altered sensation, pain and scarring.

The procedures include changing the shape or size of the labia, “restoring” the hymen, and tightening the vagina.

Dr. Abbey Berenson, who helped write the guidelines, said some women may be fooled by deceptive marketing practices into thinking they need the surgery because they are somehow abnormal.

“Many women don’t realize that the appearance of external genitals varies significantly from woman to woman,” Berenson said in a statement.

The Bohol Chronicle

At least 10 congressmen from Central Visayas and party-list groups signed a resolution asking for an inquiry into the effects of the oil seismic survey and future drilling at the Bohol-Cebu Strait.

However, Boholano solons Edgar Chatto, Roberto Cajes and Adam Jala did not sign the resolution.

House Resolution 212 was jointly filed by administration congressmen Eduardo Gullas (Cebu 1st Dist., KAMPI), Benhur Salimbangon (Cebu 4th Dist., KAMPI), Antonio Cuenco, (Cebu City 2nd Dist., LAKAS), Jocelyn Sy-Limkaichong, Negros Oriental (1st Dist., LAKAS-CMD), George Arnaiz, (Negros Oriental 2nd Dist., NPC), and Henry Teves (Negros Oriental (3rd Dist., LAKAS) along militant lawmakers Luzviminda Ilagan and Liza Maza of Gabriela, Crispin Beltran of Anakpawis and Satur Ocampo of Bayan Muna.

The resolution directs the House committee on natural resources to immediately probe the impact of offshore mining in the protected seascapes of the Bohol-Cebu Strait and the Visayan Sea which is identified as one of the world's riches marine biodiversity area.

In a press statement, Rep. Casiño said, "This is an effort by a diverse set of political species in the House. We are very much heartened that the six administration solons have seen it fit to jointly file Resolution 212. This is a major issue of our Visayan compatriots that must be immediately investigated."

The Visayan Sea is surrounded by the island provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros and Panay.

Oil and gas drilling activity in the Bohol-Cebu seas cover an area of 444,000 hectares of marine waters.

This will be undertaken by Australia based Otto Energy Ltd. which is now raising some $12-million for this contract after finding that over 270 million barrels of recoverable oil is available in the area.

Philippine Daily News / Filipina Murdered in Dubai?
September 12, 2007, 07:46:13 AM
A death certificate issued for a Filipina maid who was found in a decomposed state outside a villa in Jumeirah last month does not detail a cause of death.

Anariza Tangan, 35, the sister of the victim, 38-year-old housemaid Mary Ann Carbellido, said she received the Ministry of Health death certificate on Sunday morning. “I could not imagine that I'm holding the death certificate several weeks after we reported her missing in the police station. Her husband in the Philippines is always calling me to ask how she had died.

“The entire family is anxious to know what happened to her and we still don’t know,” Anariza told 7DAYS. She is scheduled to leave for the Philippines on Friday to accompany the remains of her sister back home.

Rafael Palencia, a Philippine Consulate officer, told 7DAYS that the death certificate which they received on Sunday did not indicate if Mary Ann had been murdered. Based on the death certificate issued by the UAE Ministry of Health Department of Preventive Medicine, she died on August 20.

The direct cause of death, the leading cause of death, and the actual cause of death of Mary Ann were all unknown, according to the death certificate.  A police source told 7DAYS yesterday that Mary Ann had died of natural causes.

Anariza searched for her sister after she disappeared en route to a driving lesson on August 12. One week later, she received a call from the police to identify her sister’s body discovered in Jumeirah.

The Ministry of Labour (MoL) will not approve work visa applications for workers who have entered the UAE on visit visas, according to Saleh Al Jabri, head of the Firms Department in the MoL. “It is a clear violation of the Labour law as visitors are not allowed to work on visit visas,” he pointed out.

Al Jabri told Khaleej Times that any company desirous of employing an expatriate should obtain a temporary work permit or employment visa, not visit visa.

In case of violation, the employers would risk Dh10,000 fine and suspension of transactions for six months.

Sources at MoL said that the ministry had recently rejected an application that had been initially approved by the Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency Department (ADNRD) because the company had sought to hire employees on visit visas.

Technology / Free Pascal 2.2
September 11, 2007, 07:33:12 PM
"Free Pascal 2.2 has been released. Several new platforms are supported, like the Mac OS X on Intel platform, the Game Boy Advance, Windows CE and 64-Windows.

Free Pascal is now the first and only free software compiler that targets 64-bit Windows.

These advancements were made possible by Free Pascal's internal assembler and linker allowing support for platforms not supported by the GNU binutils.

The advancement in internal assembling and linking also allow faster compilation times and smaller executables, increasing the programmer comfort.

Other new features are stabs debug support, many new code optimizations, resourcestring smart-linking and more."

The Supreme Court en banc has issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the implementation of the controversial $329-million national broadband contract between the Philippines and Chinese firm ZTE Corp.

In a four-page resolution, the high bench ruled that, "Acting on the instant petition, without giving due course to the petition, to issue a TRO, effective immediately and continuing until further orders from this Court."

It also prevented "respondents and any of and all persons acting on their behalf from 'pursuing, entering into indebtedness, disbursing funds and implementing the ZTE-DOTC (Department of Transportation and Communication) broadband deal and project.'"

Magistrates sided with the TRO request of Iloilo Vice Gov. Rolex Suplico asking to declare the ZTE contract as "unconstitutional."

This request was consolidated with the petition lodged by rival firm Amsterdam Holdings Inc (AMI), which was founded by Jose "Joey" de Venecia III. Joey is the son of House Speaker Jose De Venecia Jr.

The high bench did not act on Suplico's plea to set oral arguments.

It also granted the request of ZTE lawyers for 20 more days or until September 28 to comment on Suplico's petition. ZTE tapped the services of the Angara Abello Concepcion Regala and Cruz Law Offices for its legal concerns in the Philippines.

In his taxpayer's suit, Suplico chided the government for "entering into indebtedness, disbursing funds for, and implementing the deal without competitive, transparent and public bidding."

"The terms of the contract in question, insofar as it obliges the government to incur a foreign loan in the amount of $330 million runs afoul of constitutional and statutory proscriptions on incurring public debt and contracting and/or guaranteeing foreign loans," he said.

Suplico insisted that the contract violated Section 20, Article 7 of the Constitution which requires the government to gain the consensus of Bangko Sentral's Monetary Board before entering into sovereign loans.

Aside from allegedly failing to go through a public bidding, Suplico said the contract was in violation of the Telecoms Policy Act mandating the government to privatize all its telecoms facilities.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) previously gave its conditional approval to the deal. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the broadband deal last April 20 in Hainan, China.

DOTC officials earlier claimed that they lost the contract at a hotel room in China. They have maintained that there are no copies of the deal.

Elections Chair Benjamin Abalos has received flak after being pampered by ZTE officials, something which he described as a courtesy mutually accorded by "golfing buddies."

Abalos claimed that he merely pointed ZTE executives to Philippine officials while the agreement was forged.

Senator Panfilo Lacson had claimed receiving information that the contract was padded by $198 million because of kickbacks that went to an elections official, as well as a "Big One" and a "Little One."

In Congress, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) told the House appropriations committee that the government never consulted them about the broadband deal even if the matter was within the agency's expertise.

Worse, DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro said the government allegedly ignored her office's proposal to source the project funding from foreign-assisted Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds, but the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) allegedly failed to take action on this.

The $329 million needed to bankroll the national broadband network project will be acquired through a 20-year loan.

Under the reported contract terms, the amount will be payable in 15 years with a 3-percent annual interest and a five-year grace period.

For obvious reasons, scientists long have thought that salt water couldn't be burned.

So when an Erie man announced he'd ignited salt water with the radio-frequency generator he'd invented, some thought it a was a hoax.

John Kanzius, a Washington County native, tried to desalinate seawater with a generator he developed to treat cancer, and it caused a flash in the test tube.

Within days, he had the salt water in the test tube burning like a candle, as long as it was exposed to radio frequencies.

His discovery has spawned scientific interest in using the world's most abundant substance as clean fuel, among other uses.

Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, held a demonstration last week at the university's Materials Research Laboratory in State College, to confirm what he'd witnessed weeks before in an Erie lab.

"It's true, it works," Dr. Roy said. "Everyone told me, 'Rustum, don't be fooled. He put electrodes in there.' "
