Melrose is the name of an old movie theater along CPG Avenue in Tagbilaran City the facade of which was recently destroyed on orders of the city government.  I don't know how old it was but it may have haled from way back in the early days of the Philippine Republic (dili tung panahon ni Aguinaldo ha).  As early as I can remember in the early and mid-80s it had fallen into some disrepute because of the kind of movies it was then showing although I think Royal (another movie theater) then was much more notorious.

I'm not quite sure but I think I read somewhere in this forum that historian Ambeth Ocampo had noted it as a heritage site.

Imong abrihan.  Ginamos na.  ;D

Anyway, you have some valid points, Franklin.  There may be no point to increasing the numbers of a corrupt police force, however, I do not believe that the PNP is totally corrupt.  Further, increased police visibility does help bring down the incidence of criminality.

Am I jealous of the police?
What? Makes no sense.

I am not criticizing because I an a US citizen and I want to put the Philippines down.
I am critical of police everywhere.

Mick Jagger said it, "all the cops are criminals, and all the sinners, saints"

Before you think your thoughts, think why would I say these things. I want to live full time in the Philippines, I want it to be safe. That's all.

To quote Mick Jagger of all persons.  He may be a great entertainer but the guy's more famous for his lips than he is for the quality of his thoughts.  That sanctimonious so*ovab*tch has exploited an art form that has its roots in black music yet refuses to support social welfare that would provide the help needed by the poor and unemployed to get by in difficult times.  All the guy is after is a tax cut.  Any philosophy he spouts may just be lip service.

QuoteArticle 19. Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

15 journalists were killed and 68 experienced violent attacks in turbid circumstances for having denounced the corruption and abuses of the Russian Army in Chechnya. The special correspondent of "Novaia Gazeta" in the Caucasian republic was "invited" in 2002 to leave the country.

Infringement of the freedom of speech and media, and killed/attacked journalists have been also signaled in Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Kenya, Sudan, Panama, Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine, Iran, Pakistan, Tunisia, Vietnam, China ...

Jerjer is an equivalent to the term "toyi," and, to quote myself from somewhere else in this forum, owes its coinage to Teban of "Teban and Goliat" fame.  It was intended as a euphemism for sex but, by its own merit, eventually became a dirty word in itself.  I first heard of it in late 2003 and, since I'm usually one of the last to know, it may have already been in circulation even a year before that.

"The Boholanos are so brave and valorous that they have spread to many neighboring islands where their descendants preserve their name Boholano, of which they are very proud, as we are in foreign lands of the name of Spaniards."
                                                        - Jesuit friar and historian Pedro Chirino

"Boholanos are the most warlike and the most valiant among the Indios."
                                                        - historian Murillo Velarde

"(The) people of Bohol are warlike indios (who) had created plenty of trouble in the past years."
                                                        - Jesuit friar and historian Francisco Colin

These three men were all Spaniards and they all said these of Boholanos in the early 17th Century.  Admittedly, Chirino may have been an "Indio-phile" but still to be regarded in such terms and to be singled out for our courage and valor should be a source of great pride for all of us Boholanos.  Even Velarde and Colin give their grudging respect of Boholano spirit.

We have produced heroes, a President, several senators of the Republic, athletes of international renown since the days of the late Congressman and Olympian Simeon Toribio, the Loboc Children's Choir, the Dimiao Children's Rondalla, artists, scientists, and scholars.

So the next time someone asks, "Where is Bohol?"  Ask him, "Hindi ka ba nakapag-aral?"

Yes, one should not look to the religion for blame but on the people who claim to profess it.  In having fathered a child, this priest may have failed to observe his vows but the Church is not beyond forgiving one who asks for forgiveness.  The reasons why he killed his son are his alone and he will be made to answer for the gruesome murder, if not by human justice than perhaps by a higher justice.

August 09, 2007, 10:42:13 PM
Here's a game I used to play when I was a kid.  It's a little like TextTwist.  I'll provide a word and you form words from its letters.  Of course, you don't need to use all the letters but you have to time yourself.  I recommend from ten to fifteen minutes.  Merely adding an 's' is not counted unless it's an entirely different word and not just a plural form or a certain tense.  There are no winners here.  You only have the fun of playing the game.  Here's an example on how to play this one:

justice

just, cut, ice, suit, jut, jet, set, site, tie, cite, sit, sect, set

(You probably get it now.)

Here's the first word:

ordinary

(It's not for everyone but I hope you enjoy it. :))

Most such remedies are not so widely used now.  In my case it was only Royal Tru-orange and eggs.  I remember that I'd be feverish in the morning and after drinking it I'd be running around in the afternoon. :D

Pero karon, OTC drugs na ang tumaron.  :-\

It's just my age.  It's not that I tried to predict yours.  Don't worry, I don't have ESP(N).  ;D

Ginger, you may as long as you're younger than 29. :)  However, I prefer to be called Manong or Manoy than Kuya, even if the former may make me seem older.  I've never really taken to that Tagalog word. :-\

It's part of a cycle.  Aside from the issues that boholrepublic has raised, which are perfectly valid, no Sandugo Festival celebration held in an election year has ever been noteworthy.

I can't really write something in the same vein about my payong and me, Snowhite.  The relationship between me and my payong is strictly functional.
