The tourism industry in the province continues to flourish in terms of arrivals despite the lack of hotel or resort accommodations.

Tourist arrivals, both foreign and domestic, are expected to hit over half a million or about 18% more than last year's.

As of November this year, a total of 491,407 visitors arrived here, based on the comparative annual report provincial count of the Bohol Tourism Office (BTO).

About 40,990 arrivals is estimated in December, according to the BTO data. The 40,990, which is expected in the current peak month, is derived from average of the January-November data or 491,885 divided by 11 months.

Bohol could overtake Misamis Occidental, said to be the "surprise second" most visited province with 526,367 tourists, based on the Department of Tourism count. Cebu still is the number one with 748,006, based on DOT as quoted by a national daily last week.

A formal communication to Governor and Erico B. Aumentado from Mr. Jimmy Tan, president of the Philippine and Soong Ching Ling Foundation informing of the arrival of the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation Little Companion Art Troupe in the country and specifically here in the province of Bohol on January 29 to February 1, 2007 for art performances and cultural exchanges in celebration of the Chinese new year.

In the evening of February 1, there is a tentative schedule for the group to have cultural exchanges with the representatives of the city as well as with the provincial government but this has yet to be confirmed by the hosts. But most definitely the group wishes not only to view a performance but also to have cultural exchanges with the famed and favored Loboc Children's Choir in the morning of February 2, 2008 at the Bohol Children's Palace after experiencing the renowned Loboc River Cruise. Later in the afternoon Mr. Lu Ping the head or chairman of the Chinese cultural troupe of Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation Little Companion Art Troupe will be the Guest of Honor for the unveiling of the Bohol Children's Palace signage. Thereafter the group will be departing back for Manila.

The group led by Mr. Lu Ping, numbering about 53 persons is composed of not only the members of the art troupe but also the directors and staff of Philippine and Soong Ching Ling Foundation and will be staying at the equally famous Bohol Beach Club in Panglao.

As illegal fishing activities have been found rampant in the Bohol seawaters, another case was noted Thursday night right in the seawaters off Tagbilaran Bay.

The Chronicle was informed that fishing boats operate few kilometers from the City Port, at the seawaters between Manga district and Dauis town.

A DYRD team which filed its report through "Tagbilaran-By-Nite" noted no less than 25 fishing boats at the area which is in clear violation of the 15-km distance from the shorelines, both of Dauis and Tagbilaran.

Residents in the area noted that the fishing boats were there almost the entire night last Thursday. Aside from violating the 15-km distance, the fishing boats were using superlights which deprive meager fishermen of their share in the bounties of the sea.

Engr. Rene Villaber, head of the Bohol Environment Management Office (BEMO) could not be reached for comments when the dyRD team spotted the illegal fishers Thursday night. His cellular phone could not be reached despite repeated tries. This is the second time dyRD reporters failed to contact the BEMO head to report such incident.

Forty-six out of 47 fellow barangay captains voted for Valencia's Concepcion Lim as president of the provincial Liga ng mga Barangay (Association of Barangay Captains) during yesterday's election at the Bohol Tropics Resort Club.

Lim ended her third term as provincial board member representing the third congressional district last June. But this did not bar her from rejoining her former colleagues at the provincial legislature as she will be sworn in as ex officio member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) following her unanimous victory over lone opponent, Panglao ABC head Cirino Hormachuelos.

Nobody voted for Hormachuelos who did not even show up during yesterday's voting.

Meanwhile, incumbent provincial ABC president Romulo Cepedoza of Danao town, who decided on last minute to slide down as executive vice president under Lim's group, was unopposed. He also garnered 46 votes.

Elected as the league's auditor was Maxelinda Ayco of Antequera.

Also elected as members of the board of directors were Ephraim Bomediano (Dauis), Jose Nicanor Tocmo (Corella), Arlene Caadlawon (Candijay), Andrew Tadena (Jagna), Crispina Vergara (Mabini), Efren Tanjay (Ubay), Eduardo Bagol (Sikatuna) and Constantino Lagapa (Dagohoy).

It was two days before Christmas but Gov. Erico Aumentado was still at it â€" preparing proposal letters that he would personally follow up on his next out-of-the-country trip. This even as his family and household staff, in the spirit of Christmas, already shifted gears preparing gifts and food for guests and friends the following day â€" and for the traditional noche buena as well.

The governor was to leave for Cebu en route to Taipei in Taiwan and to Macau in the afternoon of Christmas Day â€" to return in time for today's celebration of the 111th commemoration of the martyrdom of the foremost national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Aumentado is seeking assistance from Director for Economic Affairs Ditha Angara-Mathay of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taiwan.

Virtually unknown Ciso “El Terrible” Morales of Talibon, Bohol, has been reported to see action in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez rematch on March 15 in Las Vegas.

The inclusion of the undefeated young prospect was received through renowned Cebu promoter Sammy “Don King” Gello-ani from Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez.

Gello-ani made a stop at Los Angeles in a courtesy call with Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez after his trip in Mexico.

Gomez explained that Gello-ani’s young “El Terrible” Morales will get his US debut in the undercard of Manny’s super fight with Marquez on March 15, 2008 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

“This will be a big break for this young gun. We are excited about this kid, in the amateurs he was the talk of the town when he knocked out Jason Pagara who is also a hot prospect and currently undefeated in the pro’s,” Gello-ani explained.

Meanwhile, the young El Terrible is penciled in by Gello-ani for the vacant WBO Youth junior featherweight title late January in Manila. Gello-ani explained, “I got the OK from WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo for our tentative schedule on January. We have big plans for this kid, this kid will be another fighter who will make it big in the Philippines and we are with the right promoter Golden Boy Promotions to guide his career.”

According to noted CDN correspondent Salven Lagumbay, the 19-year-old Morales remained undefeated as of Dec. 27. His pro ring record and coming opponent were not immediately known. Morales won his Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesday via knockout.

Filipino ring stars Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire and Gerry Peñalosa were prominently mentioned in the 2007 Boxing Year in Review of The Boxing Times.

Donaire’s knockout victory over the erstwhile unbeaten Australian Vic Darchinyan for the IBF/IBO flyweight crown was cited as “Upset of the Year.”

Pacquiao’s eighth-round knockout of Mexican Jorge Solis, on the other hand, got the nod of the The Boxing Times staff as one of the bloodiest title fights.

Trailing on all three judges scorecards throughout, Peñalos unleashed a wicked left hand to the liver that sent bantamweight champion Johnny Gonzales to the canvas with seconds left in the seventh round.
That classic left was tagged as the best body punch.

Earlier, Donaire’s fifth round demolition of Darchinyan also earned him accolades from Ring magazine and boxing TV network HBO as “Knockout of the Year” and “Upset of the Year.”

Returning from a winning stint in the Thailand Southeast Asian Games, Cecil Mamiit is now setting his sights on the Davis Cup competitions and even the Olympics as he hopes to continue to carrying the national colors internationally.

The Philippines, back in Group I of competition in the Davis Cup, takes on Asian heavyweight Japan here in Manila.

“It is our turn to play in our home court with a big local crowd cheering us on unlike in Thailand,” Mamiit said. “At the same time, the weather here sill be another factor as the Japanese players will be coming from cold weather.”

Mamiit won the gold medal in the singles competition in the Thailand SEA Games.
Mamiit said the RP squad, managed by sportsman-businessman Jean Henri Lhuillier, benefited from the fact that the SEA Games was held in the tween the Davis Cup tie matches against Kuwait and Japan, saying “we had the opportunity to train and play together as a team.”

“Right now I believe we have fifty-fifty chances but if we continue to work hard, we should be able to swing the odds in our favor, maybe 60-40 just before the matches,” added Mamiit.

Tagbilaran City residents expressed alarm on the impending serious problem of the city’s drainage system even as the multi-million drainage project will soon be completed.

Water discharged at the new drainage system includes wastes from the more than 30 establishments and homes which authorities failed to unplug while the project was still in progress. This is adding volume and pollutants to what was originally designed to accommodate rain water to the drainage system along CPG Avenue.

Residents in low-lying areas are complaining on the frequent flooding brought about by heavy rains.
Just a few minutes of downpour would submerge some areas of CPG North Avenue and Peñaflor St. by as much as 3-feet of water.

Complaints were aired over Station dyRD by residents who observed the foul odor of the water that overflows from the city’s drainage.

Atty. Rene Paredes said in an interview over dyRD said that Peñaflor residents fear for their safety every time it rains since water flood into their homes.

Another resident, Dr. Dulce Camacho, bared that even students of Bohol Wisdom School could hardly get off their vehicles when the water reach almost waist-deep.

Camacho said they have been complaining on the matter for almost a year now but the City Engineers Office has not done anything about it.

Since the concreting of CPG Avenue, flooding at Penaflor Street has worsened, Camacho added.
A small canal that had been excavated by the City Engineers Office could not hold the water coming from the drainage system, according to Camacho.

The unfinished excavation works at the drainage outflow along San Jose Street has caused the frequent spill over of polluted water, explained Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineer Celestino Adlaon.

According to Adlaon, the elevation of CPG Avenue causes water to settle in low-lying areas especially that the outfall is not yet completed.

Raymond, a Bohol-based entrepreneur, was once approached by a top executive of a mobile phone company to become its exclusive distributor. He had to say no.

Why should he say yes when Raymond’s Save ‘n Earn is the largest “One Stop Telecom Chain” in Bohol that carries all three brandsâ€"Globe Telecom, Smart Communications Co. Inc., and Sun Cellular.

Its product lines include cellular phones, accessories, prepaid cards, electronic load, dream satellite TV, satellite phones and cell phone repair and services.

Raymond earned a “superior performance” when he graduated from the Asian Institute of Management Master in Entrepreneurship program for innovations he adopted in his business.

“I had been thinking of innovations in 2006 and I needed affirmation of these,” Raymond cites as the reason for joining the ME program.

A major innovation was a program that reduced his inventory of prepaid loads through real-time recording of transactions through a new technology that Save ‘n Earn developed. The program enables Save ‘n Earn dealers to always have the load value customers want to buy. The outlets no longer carry the phone cards. Only the central office does.

Another program he undertook was the hiring of students as part-time workers.

“If Jollibee can get part-time students who are sosyal yet mop the floors and clean the toilets, why can’t I?” he asked.

His rationale was that malls, where some of his outlets are located, have a peak time of only four hours, so the answer to meet this increased demand is to get part-time workers.

A third innovation is the S ‘n E Entrepreneurship program wherein he converts retailers into dealers. He also has a unique program where he provides financing for his contractual employees to become his dealers, thus converting them into micro entrepreneurs.

Today, he has 24 company-owned outlets and 31 franchisees.

Like many entrepreneurs, Raymond did not strike gold during his first attempt at entrepreneurship. After college, he went into the poultry contract-growing business. The company he was supplying to experienced financial difficulties and Raymond lost a lot of money.

Typhoon “Ruping,” which destroyed his farm, did not help.

“I then went into processed meat and table eggs peddling to help my family after our farm was hit by Typhoon Ruping,” he says.

Gihandom Sa Lapyahan Ang Mga Balod
A Short Story by Michael Ligalig
Published by the Bisaya Magazine on April 17, 2002
(written when I was 21 years old)

Milubog una si Rebeccah sa bunbon. Mirelaks.

"Oo, tuwing weekend nandito 'yan."

"Kasabot man kog binisaya kay nakabana man kog taga Butuan. Kaestorya pud ko ug gamay." Mitan-aw sa lamesa ang cashier, "Kaon sa diay, Day."

World Daily News / Blogger In Saudi Arabia Arrested
December 29, 2007, 06:02:02 PM
Saudi Arabian officials have reportedly detained a blogger whose writing has criticized religious extremism in the country, according to the two press freedom groups and a regional human-rights organization.

Blogger and IT professional Fouad Ahmed al-Farhan, 32, was taken into custody on December 10, the Committee to Protect Journalistsreported on Wednesday. His Arabic-language site now has a "Free Fouad" banner in English across the top.

In a letter sent to friends shortly before his arrest, al-Farhan wrote that he had been told that the interior ministry was investigating him and would pick him up within two weeks. At the time he described the worst case as being jailed for three days, but he was still being held without charge as of Friday, according to Joel Campagna, Middle East program coordinator for the CPJ in New York.

Hon. Concepcion O. Lim
Third Congressional District, Bohol Board Member

Before Dr. Concepcion O. Lim plunged into the labyrinth of politics, she was already an
achiever in her own right.

When a visionary move, she was able to establish a hospital in her hometown of Valencia,
Bohol after carving a name in the practice of medicine by delivering health services to countless Valenciahanons, her being a Doctor of Medicine by profession.

As a young girl then, she nurtured a lofty dream of obtaining a career that will contribute to
the delivery of basic services to the people.

After high school, she enrolled herself with the famed San Juan de Letran in Manila for her preparatory course.

To follow through her high end educational pursuit, she entered in the University of Sto,
Tomas where she earned a Bachelor of Medicine Degree.

While practicing her profession after passing the board examination, she arrived the lure of
the green bucks earning from jobs abroad, which tried to waylay her ambition and objective
to serve the people of Valencia.

Through hard work, assiduousness, focus and determination, she was able to establish a hospital, which until now continues to serve not only the people from Valencia but also from
the neighboring areas.

Her years of taking good care of the sick, the old and the children as a medical practitioner,
had honed and developed her civic mindedness.

With the endorsement, support and clamor from fellow Valenciahanons and her family, she entered politics in 1988 and won handily as the municipal Mayor of Valencia, Bohol.

The broadened spectrum of delivering the basic services as a politician did not waver her commitment and resolve to serve the people, instead, it encouraged and emboldened her,
all the more, to indulge in politics which ran three terms as Valencia’s Chief Executive.

Because serving the people knows no boundaries, she expanded her jurisdiction throughout
the country when she was elected as the National Treasurer of the League of Municipalities.

Ten years after she became the Mayor of Valencia, she aspired and elected as one of the Provincial Board Members, representing the Third District of Bohol.

At the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, she chairs the Committee on Health & Public Sanitation
and Social Services and presently, she is the Vice President for the Visayas of the Provincial Board Member’s League of the Philippines (PBMLP).

Despite the ever-increasing demand for public service, Inday Conching continues to pursue
her commitments as a lifetime member of the Philippine Medical Society and the Philippine Hospital Association and as President of the Philippine Hospital Association, Bohol Chapter.

She is also holding at the same time, the positions as Director and National Treasurer of
the Philippine Hospital Association.
