The Philippines, back in Group I of competition in the Davis Cup, takes on Asian heavyweight Japan here in Manila.
“It is our turn to play in our home court with a big local crowd cheering us on unlike in Thailand,†Mamiit said. “At the same time, the weather here sill be another factor as the Japanese players will be coming from cold weather.â€
Mamiit won the gold medal in the singles competition in the Thailand SEA Games.
Mamiit said the RP squad, managed by sportsman-businessman Jean Henri Lhuillier, benefited from the fact that the SEA Games was held in the tween the Davis Cup tie matches against Kuwait and Japan, saying “we had the opportunity to train and play together as a team.â€
“Right now I believe we have fifty-fifty chances but if we continue to work hard, we should be able to swing the odds in our favor, maybe 60-40 just before the matches,†added Mamiit.
