No Matter What Kind of Alcohol a Woman Drinks, This Will Destroy Her Boobs - Whiter or red wine, beer or spirits...they all cause breast cancer
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

After small quantities of alcohol have been considered to improve heart health for such a long time, recent researches show that this also can increase the risk of breast cancer. And one of the largest individual researches focusing on the effects of alcohol reveals that it does not matter what a woman drinks: wine, beer or spirits (liquor)…there will still be a risk of breast cancer.

It's all about the quantity of alcohol and having three or more alcoholic drinks daily has the same effects on increasing the risk for
breast cancer as smoking at least one pack of cigarettes daily.

"Population studies have consistently linked drinking alcohol to an increased risk of female breast cancer, but until now there has been little data, most of it conflicting, about an independent role played by the choice of beverage type," said Dr. Arthur Klatsky, researcher at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland.

The study was made on the drinking habits of 70,033 multi-ethnic women who were monitored between 1978-1985. By 2004, 2,829 of these women experienced breast cancer. The team compared the total alcohol intake among women who preferred one specific drink to those who had no clear preference. Another analysis took into consideration the possible independent role of the frequency of drinking a specific beverage type.

The researchers also investigated the role of total alcohol intake, compared with women who consumed less than one alcoholic drink daily. When focusing on the link between breast cancer risk and total alcohol ingestion, the researchers discovered that women who drank 1-2 alcoholic drinks daily faced a risk of breast cancer which was 10 % higher, as compared with light drinkers (less than one drink per day).

The danger of breast cancer rose by 30 % in subjects drinking over 3 drinks a day. The risk was the same for age or ethnicity categories.

"Statistical analyses limited to strata of wine preferrers, beer preferrers, spirits preferrers or non-preferrers each showed that heavier drinking â€" compared to light drinking â€" was related to breast cancer risk in each group. A 30 % increased risk is not trivial. To put it into context, it is not much different from the increased risk associated with women taking estrogenic hormones. Incidentally, in previous research completed at Kaiser Permanente, we have found that smoking a pack of cigarettes or more per day is related to a similar (30 %) increased risk of breast cancer," Klatsky said.

Even if breast cancer has a genetic path and a low percentage of women are heavy drinkers, 30 % higher risk of breast cancer from heavy drinking could mean about 5 % more women developing breast cancer due to their habit.

"We think that the heart protection benefit from alcohol is real, and is probably derived largely from alcohol-induced higher HDL (‘good’) cholesterol, reduced blood clotting and reduced diabetes. None of these mechanisms are known to have anything to do with breast cancer. The possible but unproven additional coronary benefit from drinking wine (red or white) may be related to favorable drinking patterns common among wine drinkers or to the favorable traits of wine drinkers, as evidenced by other United States and Danish studies," Klatsky said.

This Is What Global Warming Brings: Brain Eating Amoeba - A severe infection that has no cure yet
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It may seem like taken from the X-files, but the bug is real. Its last victim is a 14-year-old boy who waded in the Lake Havasu between Arizona and California in September 2007. This is the sixth victim in 2007 of a type of Amoeba that makes its way to the brain through the nasal cavity,
and destroys it.

Naegleria fowleri, first discovered in Australia in the 1960s, killed 23 people from 1995 to 2004, and even if the cases are rare, they are 100 % lethal. "This is definitely something we need to track. This is a heat-loving amoeba (preferred temperatures: 25-35o C (77-95 o F)). As water temperatures go up, it does better. In future decades, as temperatures rise, we'd expect to see more cases.", said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational water-born illnesses for the CDC.

Naegleria has been found almost all around US in lakes, hot springs, even swimming pools, but infections come mainly from southern states (the other cases of 2007 come from Texas (2) and Florida (3)). The amoeba typically inhabits lake bottoms, feeding on algae and bacteria in the sediment. "People become infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. If someone allows water to shoot up the nose -- say, by doing a cannonball off a cliff -- the amoeba can latch onto the person's olfactory nerve."

The bug destroys tissue on its way towards the brain. It causes olfactory impairment (taste and smell), vomiting, nausea, fever, headache, and the rapid onset of coma and death in two weeks.

The amoeba first penetrates the olfactory mucosa and nasal tissues, causing severe necrosis and hemorrhage in the olfactory bulbs. "People who are infected tend to complain of a stiff neck, headaches and fevers. In the later stages, they'll show signs of brain damage such as hallucinations and behavioral changes. Once infected, most people have little chance of survival. Some drugs have been effective stopping the amoeba in lab experiments, but people who have been attacked rarely survive. Usually, from initial exposure it's fatal within two weeks", Beach said.

"Researchers still have much to learn about Naegleria. For example, it seems that children are more likely to get infected, and boys are infected more often than girls. Experts don't know why. Boys tend to have more boisterous activities (in water), but we're not clear," he said. "People seem to think that everything can be made safe, including any river, any creek, but that's just not the case," said Doug McBride, a spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Still, experts say people shouldn’t panic, since infections are extremely rare compared to how much people enter in contact with the water. "The easiest way to prevent infection is to simply plug your nose when swimming or diving in fresh water. You'd have to have water going way up in your nose to begin with to be infected", said Beach.

How to Deal with Insect Bites - ...and chase away insects
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Bee "work"

They are an annoyance that can ruin our pleasantest trip. But in rural areas, with so many domestic and wild animals around, the insects' proliferation is unavoidable, and with them come their bites. That's why people have looked for many natural remedies to alleviate them.

To relieve rapidly the uneasiness caused by the bites of the mosquitoes, there's nothing better than cutting an extremely fine slice of fresh onion and pass it over the affected area. Alcohol, too, eases the mosquitoes' bite.

In case of wasp bite, it is more effective to mix wine vinegar and water in equal parts and moisten the skin with it. In case of bee bite, the most adequate approach is to use some sodium bicarbonate diluted in water. In the last case, you have to take into account that the needle remains implanted into the skin, that's why you have to extract it before (with proper pincers and a magnifying glass).

Other extremely effective solution is to dilute lavender oil into water or another type of oil and apply it directly over theaffected area. Moreover, lavender oil chases away the insects, impeding the little bug tol return to complete its work.

If you're on the field or in a garden, it will be easy to use a pot marigold (Calendula) flower. European villagers use to grind one of these wild flowers, and put it over the bite to alleviate the stinging and avoid swelling. The area can be wrapped with a Calendula bandage. Always keep a balsam of colloidal silicic acid in the house; it’s amazing for treating insect bites.

But instead of treating a bite, it would result more effective to chase away the insects before something unpleasant happens. In Europe, villagers burn dry leaves of sage, as the smell of this smoke repels the insects.

You may not know, but besides the taste for blood, mosquitoes have another point in common with Dracula: they hate garlic. Eating a lot of garlic will keep mosquitoes away. Plant on the windowsill species like peppermint, garlic, or ginger. Insects won't dare enter your home.

Top 5 Aesthetic Surgeries - What do the Americans prefer?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Any physician, dietician, or fitness instructor will tell you that two factors are necessary to look good after the age of 20: diet and exercising. But if you're a couch potato aged 40, and your life’s centered around alcohol, smoking and white nights, there is one last chance: plastic surgery. Only in 2006, the Americans spent more than 3 billion dollars on nose jobs, liposuctions and botox injections. But which are the most desired plastic surgeries?

1. Junk food comes with a heavy toll: by 2015, 75 % of U.S. adults will be overweight and 41% obese while nearly 24 % of U.S. children and adolescents will be overweight or obese. Europe too is not very far away. In Sweden, one of the slimmest European nations, 50% of men and 36 % of women are overweight.

No wonder most Americans want to get slim. This is the reason why liposuction occupies the first place amongst the plastic surgeries demanded by the Americans. In 2006, they underwent 324 000 such operations, which meant a gain of $750 million for the doctors.

2. The second surgery that most US citizens want is nose remodeling (rhinoplasty), undergone by 298.000 persons. They paid for this about one billion dollars.

3. Breast augmentation scored third, with almost 291.000 interventions, for which the plastic surgeons gained almost one billion dollars. Since 2001, the number of patients for this type of surgery almost doubled.

4. About 231,000 people want no wrinkles around the eye area, so they had eyelid operations. Surgeons cashed about $ 580 million in 2006 only for this type of surgery.

5. Abdominoplasty was solicited by 135.000 Americans in 2006, at a cost of almost $ 600 million. This is the most significant increase in the market of American plastic surgery, with 115 % from 2001.

By frequency, the next surgeries would be ear remodeling and hair implant (these being demanded especially by men).

Coffee + Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) = Death - It harms the liver
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Coffee and flue do not match. Mixing large amounts of caffeine with acetaminophen (paracetamol), one of the most common painkillers used in the US and Europe could harm your liver, as found by a new research.

The danger does not come only from caffeinated dinks combined with the drug, but also from medications mixing caffeine and acetaminophen against headaches, menstrual discomfort, arthritis and other issues. Paracetamol is also
used for reducing the risk of ovarian cancer, but long-term use can rise the risk of kidney failure, high blood pressure and strokes. The harmful (and potentially lethal) effect of mixing alcohol with acetaminophen was already well-known.

The team led by Dr. Sid Nelson at the University of Washington in Seattle checked the effects of acetaminophen and caffeine on E. coli bacterium strain containing a key human enzyme involved in the liver's detoxification action against many drugs. The caffeine was found to triple the quantity of a toxic byproduct, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), produced by the enzyme while degrading the acetaminophen.

NAPQI also caused liver damage and failure in toxic alcohol-acetaminophen interactions. The same team had found that high doses of caffeine can boost liver damage in rats that have been administered acetaminophen. "People should be informed about this potentially harmful interaction. The bottom line is that you don’t have to stop taking acetaminophen or stop taking caffeine products, but you do need to monitor your intake more carefully when taking them together, especially if you drink alcohol.", said Nelson.

The tested bacteria received ‘megadoses’ of both paracetamol and caffeine, much higher than humans usually consume each day, corresponding to about 20-30 cups of coffee. "Most people would similarly need to consume unusually high levels of these compounds together to have a dangerous effect, but the toxic threshold has not yet been determined. Certain groups may be more vulnerable to the potentially toxic interaction than others. This includes people who take certain anti-epileptic medications, including carbamazepine and phenobarbital, and those who take St. John’s Wort, a popular herbal supplement. These products have been shown to boost levels of the enzyme that produces the toxic liver metabolite NAPQI, an effect that will likely be heightened when taking both acetaminophen and caffeine together", Nelson explained.

Physical Exercise Leads to Sagged Boobs - Only special sport bras can partially avoid this
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It seems that nice boobs and a nice body don't go hand in hand. The way to sagged breasts seems to pass through fitness rooms and jogging sessions, if women do not wear suitable bras. By exercising without a proper bra, millions of women ‘damage’ their breasts.

A Portsmouth University found that while practicing sports, breasts moved in a 3D figure of eight and those uncontrolled movements stretched fragile tissues and ligaments. A jogging of one mile (1.6 km) makes a woman's breasts move 135 m (450 ft). Each breast bounced independently of the body by an average distance of 9 cm (3.5 inch) for each step made on the treadmill.

An average breast weighs about 200 and 300 g (0.4-0.7 pounds), but a pair of D-cup breasts weighs about 15 to 23 pounds (7 to 10 kilograms) and there is even JJ size! This movement stresses significantly the breast's fragile support: the outer skin and connective tissues (called Cooper's ligaments), inducing temporary pain and discomfort, but also an irreversible stretching and deterioration of the Cooper's ligament, causing the so-called sagged breasts.

"Breasts have little natural support, although ligaments and the skin are thought to do most or all of the work. Breasts are made up of fat, milk ducts and connective tissues, such as collagen, ligaments and blood vessels. The momentum created by intense bouncing can stretch the breast's connective tissues, causing sagging and pain for many women. An estimated 50 % of women experience breast pain during exercise," said author Dr. Joanne Scurr, biomechanics professor at the University of Portsmouth.

The team found that an ordinary T-shirt bra decreased the bounce by 38%, while some sports bra can do it by 78%. "Women needed to be aware of the effects of exercising without properly supporting their breasts. People rightly spend time and effort to get the right footwear for exercise and it is equally important to wear the correct sports bra. Proper support for breasts will reduce the stretch to the Cooper's ligament", said Scurr.

Nice breasts are a crucial ‘ingredient’ of femininity, but women play a heavy price for this: no matter if poorly-endowed or too generous, bouncing boobs are not really ‘supported’ by ordinary bras.

10-Limbed Frogs! - Because of contamination with fertilizers
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Malformation induced by Ribeiroa

You fertilize a plantation to grow bigger and have more fruits, tubers, leaves and so on. But frogs around get "fertilized" too, developing horrific deformities. Nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and animal waste leaking into lakes and ponds are the cause of this phenomenon. They boost the populations of a parasitic flatworm, Ribeiroia ondatrae, causeing these deformities in North American frogs.

"You can get five or six extra limbs. You can get no hind limbs. You can get all kinds of really bizarre, sick and twisted stuff," said lead researcher Pieter Johnson, an ecologist and evolutionary biologist at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

This discovery is important in the context of the world's already menaced amphibian populations, and humans are the main responsible factor. "We continue to see malformed amphibians all over the place and yet very little is being done to address those questions or even understand them," Johnson said.

The parasite was known to induce deformities in frogs, but the new research shows how this is boosted by farming runoff. The nutrients entering the water induce eutrophication and stimulate the algal growth; more algae means more snails feeding on them. The microscopic trematode worm larvae infect the snails, and more snails means they have a higher chance of encountering a host and ultimately, more worms. "When their eggs hatch, the parasites have to find a snail within 12 hours or else they die", explains Johnson.

The worms multiply asexually inside the snails, castrating them. Each snail releases thousands of larvae. The larvae then swarm over tadpoles, dug into their skin and if they burrow into the buds where limbs will develop, forming cysts, they will induce an impaired development and deformities. "Predators such as birds eat the infected frogs and spread the worm back into the ecosystem through defecation. Deformed frogs are more easily caught and eaten, benefiting the worm's lifecycle", said Johnson.

The team tested the role of nitrogen and phosphorus runoff into 36 artificial ponds in Wisconsin, filled with snails, frog tadpoles, (and in some) nitrogen and phosphorus. The pools with supplementary nitrogen and phosphorus (200 mg/l) experienced a boom in their snail population (by 50 %), parasitic worm egg production (by 300 %) and malformed frogs (by 200-500 %). "The amount of phosphorus that runs from rivers into the oceans has increased about three-fold since the industrialization of agriculture.", Johnson also said.

Hair Loss: 3 Causes and 3 Methods of Treatment - Genetic or caused by some drug/diet?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Hair loss is more than a physical issue. For many people, it is a great fatality that even changes their character. They turn more introverted, avoid relations with the others, get low self esteem, and even depression. Men will think that the others see them as being less attractive and sometimes even less virile (paradoxically, most men suffer genetic baldness linked to testosterone, the sex hormone, thus balder can show off in some cases higher testosterone levels, linked to higher sex drive and sex function).

If this is unpleasant for a man, you can imagine what it means for a woman. They can even experience a real social rejection (which is not imaginary in this case).

While in men baldness is localized to the crown of the head and hairline, in women this takes place in a diffuse manner: hair gets rarer all over the hair area (alopecia difusa feminina).

If not genetic, a temporary hair loss can be caused by chemicals and diet. Drugs known to have this effect are cholesterol, chemotherapy substances, anticoagulants, some antibiotics and anti-schizophrenia medication. If you follow a hypocaloric (low in calories) diet for losing weight, you may get rid of those extra-pounds, but your hair pays also, increasing failing. The effect is felt 2-3 months after starting the diet.

These are three therapeutic methods against severe hair loss:

1. Topic treatment employs a drug whose active principle is minoxidil, which works in both men and women. In 90 % of the cases it stops the hair loss and the advance of bald areas, and in some persons even the recovery of some lost areas, but the new hair will always be finer than the normal hair.

This treatment is not for hypertensive persons, nor for those suffering of heart or kidney, as minoxidil is a powerful peripheral vasodilator.

2. Oral drugs. They are based on finasteride, a synthetic testosterone inhibitor, which acts on the root of the hair. It is indicated for men aged 18 to 41 with excellent results in 50 % of the cases and very notable in over 33 % of the cases. This drug is definitely not recommended for women.

3. Hair autotransplant. It is the last solution for both men and women. Hair is extracted from the nape of the patient and transplanted, root included, in the bald area. Now, the most employed method is the micrograft, which consists in transplanting the hairs one by one or two by two. This way, a more aesthetic result is achieved, compared to transplanting a larger hair skin graft.

The Struggle for Finding a HIV Vaccine - The big failure of V520
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

AIDS case from India

It is the scourge of the 21st century and for over two decades scientists have been looking for an AIDS vaccine. But the long battle experienced a severe blow last week when a long-waited trial of a new HIV vaccine was prematurely stopped after failing in inducing any stop or slow down of the infection.

The STEP trial, funded by pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. and HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), had come with the idea of boosting the immune killer T cells to kill for the virus more aggressively, by employing a weakened type of the cold virus carrying three HIV genes.

The vaccine was not expected to destroy HIV, but to hinder its growth, slowing down the development of full-blown AIDS and decrease a HIV infected patient's possibility of transmitting further the infection, as a temporary therapy
till the discovery of effective ones. Now, STEP has been discarded and hope comes from other 30 products in clinical testing.

"It was a very promising candidate. Getting this information, while it's disappointing, is really what this trial is designed to do, because [it] will move the field forward when we understand more about why [the vaccine] was not protective." said Susan Buchbinder, director of HIV research for the San Francisco Department of Public Health AIDS Office, and STEP protocol co-chair for the HVTN.

Vaccines usually work by stimulating the immune system to synthesize antibodies against a germ, but this type of approach does not work in the case of the rapidly mutating HIV.

The T cell approach was based on researches showing that such vaccines against SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus or monkey HIV) prolonged life and decreased infection in monkeys. STEP trials involved V520 virus with the three HIV genes (gag, pol and nef). Infected human cells by the experimental viruses produced the proteins encoded by these genes, offering T cells a previous exposure to them.

The STEP trial started in late 2004 and was made on 3,000 uninfected people in North and South America and Australia, who did not receive other vaccinations. A second trial of V520 was stopped in South Africa.

"Final results were set to be publicly released in 2008 or later, but an independent monitoring panel conducted a scheduled review of the vaccine's effectiveness and found that 24 of 741 participants injected with the vaccine had contracted HIV, compared with 21 of 762 given a dummy vaccine. The two infected groups had nearly the same levels of virus in the blood," stated Merck officials.

"This particular vaccine approach didn't work, but there are lots of different vaccine approaches in testing that produce different immune responses," said Buchbinder.

"The adenovirus used in V520 was altered so it couldn't reproduce, which may have limited its effectiveness. The next milestone will be later stage clinical testing of a vaccine developed by the federally funded National Institutes of Health Vaccine Research Center, which should begin next year. Also based on an adenovirus, it includes several versions of a fourth HIV geneâ€"env." said Wayne Koff, senior vice president for research and development at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

It seems that a single T cellâ€"boosting vaccine is not enough to stop AIDS.

"Although disappointed in the results, the STEP trial results will likely give a shot in the arm to a growing effort to identify antibodies capable of neutralizing the virus before it causes a full-blown infection." said Koff.

Alcohol Boosts Memory - In low to moderate amounts
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

You cannot even remember how you got back home after a night of binge drinking, but a new study reports that had it been only one to two glasses of alcohol, your memory would have been in fact enhanced.

"There are human epidemiological data of others indicating that mild [to] moderate drinking may paradoxically improve cognition in people compared to abstention," said co-author Maggie Kalev, a research fellow in molecular medicine and pathology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

"This is similar to a glass of wine protecting against heart disease, however the mechanism is different."

Kalev's team was investigating the role of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors in the neuronal activity of healthy and diseased rats (NMDA receptors are crucial to memory, as they control the strength of synapses (connections) between nerve cells) when they found that memory was boosted when one of its subunits, NR1, was strengthened in the hippocampus (a brain nucleus essential for episodic memory). When discovering this, the researchers reviewed previous tests, which had revealed a connection between alcohol intake and NR1 activation.

"We decided to study if beneficial effects of low-dose alcohol drinking already shown by others could be mediated through the mechanism of increasing NR1 expression. We thought it was worth pursuing, since ethanol drinking is such a common pattern of human behavior." said Kalev.

The team made use of two types of rats: one with an abundance of NR1 subunits in their hippocampi and one in which NR1 was inhibited. Normal rats and those with inhibited NR1 received food containing 0, 2.5 or 5 % alcohol for eight weeks.

"It is hard to relate the alcohol the rats consumed to human quantities, but based on their blood alcohol levels, the 2.5 % ethanol diet was equivalent to a level of consumption that does not exceed [the] legal driving limit. This may be approximately one to two drinks per day for some people or two to three for others, depending upon their size, metabolism or genetic background." said Kalev.

After four weeks of alcohol diet, the rats were checked for cognitive function. One test was of novel object recognition. The animals were out in a cage with two small objects inside for a two-day period. Then, one object was changed with a new toy and rats' memory was assessed by how rapidly they explored the new piece.

In a second test, the animals were taught to expect a shock when they passed from a white compartment to a black one inside the same cage; after a day, the rats were replaced in the cage to test if they were still aware of the black side.

In the case of healthy rats, the animals that ingested moderate alcohol quantities scored better on both tests compared with the abstinent ones. Those with a heavy alcohol intake did not perform well on object recognition (they even had symptoms of neurotoxicity), but they marked better than their abstinent counterparts on the emotional memory test.

"People often drink to 'drown sorrows'. Our results suggest that this could actually paradoxically promote traumatic memories and lead to further drinking, contributing to the development of alcoholism." said Kalev.

Overstimulating the NR1 subunits had the same effects as moderate drinking, whereas inhibiting the NR1 subunits eliminated the effect of low, but steady consumption.

"These findings indicate that the NMDA receptor must be intact for the positive effects of alcohol to manifest," said Kalev.
The researchers presume that the NMDA receptor is first stopped by alcohol, boosting the activity of the NR1 subunit as a compensatory reaction (provoking improved cognition).

How Can Vacuum Cleaners Affect Your Health? - And how they can become harmless...
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It is clear that vacuum cleaners have saved us from a lot of effort and time wasted on cleaning our houses. Still, some researches have demonstrated that using this electric appliance too much can decrease the quality of the air we breathe.

It appears that the vacuum cleaner expels to the environment particles and microorganisms which are already found in the domestic dust
and which the filters are not able to retain.

These data should be taken into consideration if you or someone in the house suffers of any respiratory disease, like asthma, allergy, rhinitis (inflammation of the nose or its mucous membrane) or conjunctivitis.

When purchasing a vacuum cleaner, choose the most recent models that incorporate accessories able to retain effectively the dust and filter the outgoing air so that the microorganisms won't go back to the environment. Some use longitudinally mounted ultraviolet ray tubes which kill the micro-organisms contained in the air by exposure to the emitted ultraviolet radiation. The cleansed air is then returned to the room.

Another method is through electronic air cleansers, using an electronic field to trap particles. Air washing can be made by an open water holding tank, a fan and a series of plastic disks partially submerged in the water acted by a motor. The fan blows air over the wet disks as they are introduced in the water, which produces water vapors into the air, which trap particles from the fan's airstream.

The incineration technology kills microorganisms by exposing them, with the help of a heating element, to temperatures over 400°F (204o C). Other methods include ozonation (the use of ozone for killing bugs). Carbon pellets and photocatalysis can also adsorb or destroy toxic gases.

Also, it's better the keep the windows opened while using the vacuum cleaner, or cleansing the lint stuck to the brush.

Inspiration & Hope / SAND AND STONE
September 27, 2007, 10:11:49 PM
Two friends were walking through the desert.

During one point in the journey, they
had an argument, and one friend slapped
the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but
without saying anything, she wrote in
the sand:

"Today, my best friend slapped me in the
face."

They kept on walking until they found an
oasis. They decided to go swimming.

The one who had been slapped got stuck
in the mire and started drowning. But
the friend saved her.

After she recovered from the near
drowning, she wrote on a stone:

"Today, my best friend saved my life."

The friend who had slapped and saved her
best friend asked, "After I hurt you,
you wrote in the sand. And now, you
write on the stone. Why?"

The friend replied, "When someone hurts
us, we should write it down in the sand,
where the winds of forgiveness can erase
it away.

"But when someone does something good
for us, we must engrave it in stone
where no wind can ever erase it."

Learn to write your hurts in the sand
and to carve your blessings in stone.

Marrying Your Cousin Increases More Than Twice the Death Risk for Your Children - Still, it is not the greatest menace
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Is your cousin hot? In a Bedouin society, marrying him/her would be just the common thing to do. But we know that inbreeding is a great risk factor for genetic illnesses. The most varied our genes, the healthier we are. A new research checked how inbreeding affects the children’s survival rate.

The new research was made on Bedouin communities in Bekaa, Lebanon, which double the country's average marriage percentages amongst first cousins. Surprisingly, inbreeding appeared not to affect severely infant mortality, which appeared to be put more at risk by short birth intervals.

These Bedouins are Sunni Muslims and once they had a nomadic lifestyle, moving with their herds of sheep and goats to grazing lands in the Syrian desert. More recently, they settled, but the habit of choosing cousins as marriage partners, especially ibn ‘amm (father’s brother’s son) or bint ‘amm (father’s brother’s daughter) is still "a salient feature of Bedouin matrimonial life," wrote Suzanne E. Joseph (University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth).

47 % of Bedouin spouses are first cousins. 33 % are patrilateral (children of brothers). Joseph investigated mortality levels in a sample of 1,399 Bedouin children for infants (< 12 months) and small children aged under five. The numbers showed that infants from first cousins marriages have a more than twice probability of dying than those of non first-cousins. "The preference for choosing relatives as marriage partners may be a default marital strategy in situations where geographic isolation restricts the size of the mating pool, such as in nomadic societies.", explained Joseph.

In settled populations, inbreeding impeded the fragmentation of wealth or facilitated marriages among the poor by avoiding dowry payments. "While there is a heightened risk of infant mortality associated with consanguinity, even after controlling for socioeconomic and demographic factors, there are also substantial social, economic, and emotional benefits to marrying kin. Women in particular are able to draw upon the support of their family members after marriage, which enhances their position in the domestic unit.", wrote Joseph.

Still, a previous research made amongst inbreeding communities of Bedouins in the Sinai Peninsula, found that 8 % of men are deaf, due to such interbreeding. "Among populations with a high level of familial endogamy, there may also be a relatively high risk of recessive disorders which develop in childhood. However, the children of Bedouin first-cousin parents were not significantly more likely to die in childhood. The most statistically significant factor in a Bedouin child’s survival â€" whether the child of first cousins or not â€" is birth interval," showed Joseph.

Each supplementary month added before the birth of the next child lowered the infant death probability by 3.7 %.

Are Sleepwalkers Real Killers? - It seems they are not
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

We might think that sleepwalkers get out of bed with a knife and kill someone they're angry with. A new review based on 32 medical and legal cases shows that this naïve concept is off base. Sleepwalkers are seldom violent and do not look out for enemies to stab while in the sleep arousal state. It appears that if a sleepwalker turns violent, the victim is normally a person who got in the way, but not a previously targeted victim.

"Sleepwalkers are not inherently violent. Sleepwalking violence is quite rare." said author Dr. Mark Pressman, of Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Sleepwalkers' brain is working at a low level, with their brain areas linked to planning and socialization turned off.

"Legal cases in which the defendant supposedly went somewhere and sought out the victim are not likely to be true cases of sleepwalking," said Pressman, an expert witness in many trials.

He checked the hypothesis that sleepwalkers can attack
people who touch them or are nearby, but they do not spontaneously harm other persons.

"For centuries there have been reports of violent acts by sleepwalkers, and even cases of people acquitted of murder because they claimed to have been asleep when they committed the act." said Pressman.

He classified the cases into three divisions: sleepwalking, confusional arousal (similar to sleepwalking but the patient doesn't get out of bed) and sleep terrors (sleepwalking caused by a sudden partial awakening linked to a frightening stimulus).
In cases of confusional arousal, the victims had been close to or touching the patient; the same was valid for 81% of the cases of sleep terror and 40-90 % of the sleepwalkers.

"Often the provocation was quite minor and the response greatly exaggerated. Sleepwalking appeared to occur when something "goes bump in the night" but a person did not wake up fully in response," said Pressman.
Sleepwalking seems to be hereditary, as it often runs in the family and up to 15 % of children are sleepwalkers (still, most of them do not experience it as adults).

"The old advice that people should not wake a sleepwalker was misguided because it was actually quite difficult to do so." said Pressman.

The proper method is to speak to them in a clear voice, employing simple language and attempt to guide them out of dangerous situations back into bed, with great care.

"There certainly is a possibility if you have a sleepwalker who is big enough to inflict damage and you grab them and you block them they may not respond as you expect, probably because they don't even recognize who you are." said Pressman.
