Do You Still Read Books?
« on: August 23, 2007, 11:09:02 AM »
WASHINGTON - There it sits on your night stand, that book you’ve meant to read for who knows how long but haven’t yet cracked open. Tonight, as you feel its stare from beneath that teetering pile of magazines, know one thing — you are not alone.

One in four adults read no books at all in the past year, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Tuesday. Of those who did read, women and older people were most avid, and religious works and popular fiction were the top choices.

The survey reveals a nation whose book readers, on the whole, can hardly be called ravenous. The typical person claimed to have read four books in the last year — half read more and half read fewer. Excluding those who hadn’t read any, the usual number read was seven.

“I just get sleepy when I read,” said Richard Bustos of Dallas, a habit with which millions of Americans can doubtless identify. Bustos, a 34-year-old project manager for a telecommunications company, said he had not read any books in the last year and would rather spend time in his backyard pool.

That choice by Bustos and others is reflected in book sales, which have been flat in recent years and are expected to stay that way indefinitely. Analysts attribute the listlessness to competition from the Internet and other media, the unsteady economy and a well-established industry with limited opportunities for expansion.

When the Gallup Poll asked in 2005 how many books people had at least started — a similar but not directly comparable question — the typical answer was five. That was down from 10 in 1999, but close to the 1990 response of six.

In 2004, a National Endowment for the Arts report titled “Reading at Risk” found only 57 percent of American adults had read a book in 2002, a four percentage point drop in a decade. The study faulted television, movies and the Internet.

Demographics of non-book readers

Who are the 27 percent of people the AP-Ipsos poll found hadn’t read a single book this year? Nearly a third of men and a quarter of women fit that category. They tend to be older, less educated, lower income, minorities, from rural areas and less religious.

At the same time, book enthusiasts abound. Many in the survey reported reading dozens of books and said they couldn’t do without them.

“I go into another world when I read,” said Charlotte Fuller, 64, a retired nurse from Seminole, Fla., who said she read 70 books in the last year. “I read so many sometimes I get the stories mixed up.”

Among those who said they had read books, the median figure — with half reading more, half fewer — was nine books for women and five for men. The figures also indicated that those with college degrees read the most, and people aged 50 and up read more than those who are younger.

Pollyann Baird, 84, a retired school librarian in Loveland, Colo., says J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter fantasy series is her favorite. But she has forced herself to not read the latest and final installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” because she has yet to file her income taxes this year due to an illness and worries that once she started the book, “I know I’d have to finish it.”

Yeah.... during my breaktime at work.... i read mostly German books. The last time we visited my sister in London had bought few in English version.  Pastilan, gitay-an na pod Iningles ko, uwaw baya isuwat unya i issue pa gajod.  just understand, ok?  No more time to read now, tulog muna galing pa kasi aho sa trabaho. By the way, do you speak German language? B.M from Riyahd wrote to me German words. For you: Es ist leider so spät für mich, ich bin ziemlich sehr müde. Also, Gute nacht! - It is too late for me, i am quite tired. Well, good night! Alas 7:30 sa buntag diri.

Mike, Ligiah,

I've read Cuello's "The Alchemist"; his novel which humanizes the prophet Elijah and the widow ( I just forgot the title, silly me); and that other book about a young lady who failed in her attempt to  commit suicide and woke up finding herself in a mental institution (Veronica, something.... Sillier me  I also forgot the title) :)

I once read Stephen King's "Pet Semetery". I could not finish the last two chapters. Since then, no more of King readings for me. I just wait for the movie version ;D

And there's this film version of King's novel which I saw in television years ago. I couldn't remember the title but it was about a group of airplane passengers who discovered that the world has changed when they landed at the airport. Far from the distance a strange, crunching sound could be heard as if it was like eating something. And the sound got nearer and nearer.
I enjoyed the show a lot.

Was it the Twilight Zone???

Not Twilight Zone...

That crunching sound, as the story later on revealed, were made by hundreds of black, hairy, ball-like entities (almost like hairy stuffed-toys) with a really big mouth and razor sharp teeth, eating everything in their path... everything... as in even not only objects but the the present time itself and turning everything into black and nothingness.

These hairy monsters are based on a nursery rhyme that parents say to kids so that they will not be lazy.

Really, Sir Gec? I'm an addict of King's works, a lover of horror stories. This reminds me of Stephen King quote that cracked me up the other day.

"Some people ask me why I do what I do, why I write such gross things. I like to tell them I have the heart of a small boy, sitting in a jar on my desk." :P

I read book when I'm in the mood. But my husband, my God, can't sleep without reading first and started it since he was a kid. So he pretty much influenced me more and more and I enjoyed it too.
I love to read Mystery like James Patterson and Grisham (O, I recommend "Playing with Pizza" if you're a big fan of football game like me & my sweetie pie) I have to go to our library and see if I can borrow his latest "The Innocent Man" my friend told me it's suppose to be good.
I also like Daniel Steel, cute stories especially the sophisticate lifestyle on it
I also like John Irving
And the most difficult book I read it's like kick it up a notch was the "Bel Canto" by Ann Panchett
And now, I'm starting to read "Night Ferry" by Michael Robotham

I used to read a lot when I was younger. Now, I'm starting to look for the old books I used to read as a little girl. The books that had somehow influenced the person that I am now. I go to bookstores, book sales, and garage sales to look for familiar titles. Last week, I found this book from the "I Can Read It By Myself" Series. It's entitled, "Are You My Mother?" It's about a little bird whose mother was away to look for food at the time he was hatched. He went away from the nest to look for his mother. He had quite an adventure.

I collect short story books and children's books. The one I love most is "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. It's a story for children and children of all ages. (yeah!) It's written in a way that a storyteller can can incorporate music/singing while telling the story. It's a very nice story. I had several storytelling sessions with my mom, sisters, aunt, cousins, and friends (and at a mall...) and they all cried after the story ended.

You can watch a storytelling session over youtube. They sing a different tune from mine, though. Ilaha ang orig. hehehe! Apan silingan ra gud og tono. I learn the song from my friend and I liked her version. I guess, we can make our own tunes naman. (Noh?)

Anyhow, mao gyud ni ako masulti: Books are enriching experiences. (Yeah!)

I was once asked if I can survive being left alone in an island for a year and what would I take with me, excluding husband (otherwise dili nko alone heheheh).  My answer was tons of peanuts and tons of books  and of course water.  Life was still simple then.  I haven't tasted yet the  yummy miso seaweed soup or cioppino.  ;D

Books, I will probably re-read all the books of Paolo Coelho that I already ready and all of Mitch Albom's and of course, my all-time favorite book, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams.  I might also read Ayn Rand's Atlas.  When I was growing up, I saw my Aunt read that book but with stern warning not to read it.  I am not young anymore by any stretch of imagination but I still didn't read that book...

I agree with you, Melrose that books are enriching experiences!  Thru books I was able to travel to places I can't afford to go just yet.

When I read that book The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, I told myself one day I will go to Lake Tahoe - Lake Tahoe being the place beautifully described in that book (not in the movie though).  And I did. And I get married there!  OT na! hehehehe

i love reading!  i read anything, newspapers, magazines, etc.  my day is not complete when i can't read.

when i was in high school, i read this children's book written by Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew series).  that sparked my interest to read all of her 64 books but so sad to say, my high school library got 3 of her books only.  i keep on searching for her books.  anyway, i still couldn't believe that i have almost all of her books now.

my mother-in-law got hooked with Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, when i learned about her collections (i was still in bohol when i learned that she likes Nancy's books too), i started my own collection right then.  my would-be-husband bought a lot of Nancy's books, waiting for me to come here and read them.  i've also added Hardy Boys to my collection now.  this is ot but i am inspired by my mother-in-law to collect and read/reread these books.

i just finished reading "The Magician's Nephew," which is the first book of "The Chronicles of Narnia" last night. I read the second book, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" years ago because it was the more famous one. i'll start to read the third book later tonight.

It's funny to think how CS Lewis came up with the characters, the plot, and the story as a whole. It's quite a wild imagination, gyud. Anyhow, it was a good book. Good storytelling!

I think "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" was the first book.  "The Magician's Nephew" is a prequel that was published much later. :)

Hi, anj! There's a book entitled, "I love you just the way you are!" It's a short picture book about a grumpy little bear, but his dad told him, " I love you just the way you are!" Nice, no?

There's this short picture book entitled, "Guess how much I love you." I guess, you know that book. It's a famous one! It's nice especially when you read it out loud to kids (and kids of other ages...hehehe!)

By "buhi," what do you mean?  Alive and kicking or barely breathing?  :D hehe  Seriously, the group is still present and accounted for but we haven't been as active as we should be.  We have plans to come out with a folio soon, though.  You might want to contribute. :)

Whenever we schedule meetings, poetry reading sessions, and whatnots, they often end up as excuses to come together and eat, eat, eat, and drink (a little). ;D

re the folio: Sure.

Hi, Grazie! I'm not a fan yet. I only read two of his books so far. There are 2 more books in my cousin's room, which I have yet to borrow. hehe!

Sigbin gave me "The Alchemist" two years ago after he won a gift certificate from National Bookstore as a prize for his book review in one of the major broadsheets. (Was it for the Star, Paul?) I told him I like "Tuesdays with Morrie" but he could not find it at the stores (since it sells like hotcakes!).

So you like Coelho's works? "The Alchemist" was good. He was consistent in his style from beginning to end. He was consistent with the point of view of the writer/character. I like the story of "Eleven Minutes" but I hate it when Coelho jumps from a topic to discuss another subtopic at length. He also jumps from one point of view to the next. Well, lahi pod iyang style aning libroha. Nindot ra man gihapon! The topic is deep and philosophical, and SEXY! ehehe!

Hello too, Melrose! Yes, I'd say I am a fan of Coelho. I still have to read some of his books.  I read Zahir and Veronica Decides to Die and I can't remember what else.  I wanted to collect his books.  I only have two so far because most of the books I read I borrowed from the City Library.

I have Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie and his latest book, For One more Day.  I also have his Five People You Meet in Heaven.  PM me your address if you want me to send you some of these books.

Naa na diay ta'y National Bookstore?  Asa sya dapita diha sa Tagbilaran?  Thanks!
