AHMADABAD, India â€"  A newborn baby girl fell through the toilet in a moving train and onto the tracks moments after her mother prematurely gave birth, surviving nearly two hours before being found, relatives said Thursday.

The child's mother, who uses the single name Bhuri, was traveling with relatives on an overnight train when she went to the bathroom shortly before midnight Tuesday and unexpectedly gave birth to a baby girl, said Arjun Kumar, her brother-in-law.

"Later, she fell unconscious and the baby fell through the toilet," he continued. "Two stations later, we knocked at the door."

Bhuri opened the door, soaked in blood.

"When we asked her about what happened, she said the baby had fallen through onto the tracks," Kumar said.

Toilets on Indian trains usually have holes that open directly onto the tracks, and there were no indications Thursday that authorities doubted Bhuri's story or planned to investigate the incident.

Kumar said that after finding Bhuri, relatives pulled the train's emergency brake and told railway officials what had happened. A search was quickly organized, and guards at one of the stations the train had passed soon found the baby.

"She was on the rail track for almost 1 1/2 to two hours," said Dr. Gautam Jain, a pediatrician at Rajasthan Hospital in Ahmadabad, in the western state of Gujarat, where the baby and mother were taken.

The child, who has not yet been named, was eight to 10 weeks premature and weighed only 3.22 pounds, Jain said. She had a low heart rate and body temperature.

"We do not expect such children to survive," Jain said

The 57-year-old Irishman was blinded two years ago after an aluminum explosion at a recycling plant, AFP reported Thursday. His sight has been miraculously restored after doctors inserted his son’s tooth in his eye.

"I thought that I was going to be blind for the rest of my life," McNichol told RTE state radio, AFP reported.

After doctors told McNichol there was nothing more they could do for him, he heard about an offbeat operation called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) being performed in England.

OOKP, first performed in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating an artificial cornea by using the patient’s tooth and surrounding bone as a support, AFP reported.

McNichol’s son Robert, 23, donated a tooth, its root and part of his jaw for his father’s surgery. McNichol’s right eye socket was rebuilt, and a lens was inserted into a hole drilled in Robert’s tooth. The procedure required two surgeries lasting a total of 15 hours.

"It is pretty heavy going," McNichol told RTE state radio. "I have enough sight to get around and I can watch television. I have come out from complete darkness to be able to do simple things.”

A university professor allegedly caught in a Saudi-style honey trap has been sentenced to 180 lashes and eight months in jail â€" for having coffee with a girl.

The man, a prominent and well-respected Saudi teacher of psychology at Umm al-Qra University in the holy city of Mecca, was framed by the religious police after he angered some of their members at a training course, his lawyer said.

The academic has not been named by the local media, which have given his case wide coverage, but one senior Saudi journalist told The Times he was Dr. Abu Ruzaiz, a married man in his late 50s with children.

“He is highly respected and above-board. Nobody believes the religious police’s version of what happened. The whole of Jeddah (the main city near Mecca) is in uproar about this. Everyone believes he is innocent and was set up,” the journalist said.

Contact between unrelated men and women is strictly prohibited in the desert kingdom where religious police, commonly known as mutaween, patrol public places in teams to enforce their brand of ultra-conservative Islam.

Usually bearded and often wielding canes, they ensure women are not harassed, sexes do not mix and shops close for prayers. They are under the command of the Saudi Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Abdullah Al-Sanousi, the academic’s lawyer, told local newspapers that his client had drawn the ire of some of the Commission’s staffers for speaking at length during a training session about how important it was for them to be polite to the public. Some of the trainees also wanted revenge because they had failed the course while others were not happy with their examination results.

Ruzaiz is said to have received a call from a girl purporting to be one of his students who asked to meet to discuss a problem that she did not want to talk about over the phone. The professor agreed to meet at a family cafe, provided she brought her brother along as a chaperone.

When he arrived, he was surprised to find the girl alone, and was promptly surrounded by religious policemen who handcuffed him and hauled him into custody. He was accused of being in a state of khulwa â€" seclusion â€" with an unrelated woman.

His lawyer insisted that because the two met in a public place frequented by hundreds of families, the question of khulwa, or illegal seclusion, never arose. The commission, however, insists that the family sections at coffee shops and restaurants are meant only for families and close relatives.

The professor is said to have taped a later conversation with the girl in which she admitted that she had been sent to the cafe by the religious police. The professor is relying on an appeals court to overturn the verdict. His lawyer has urged local human rights associations to back his plea for reviewing the case.

A spokesman for the Commission in Mecca denied that his officials had conspired against the professor. “They are honourable people and would not create such a trap for any kind of personal revenge,” Ahmad Kasim Al-Ghamdi, told Arab News, a local paper.

The controversial case is the latest of several involving the often over zealous religious police that brought widespread international coverage that has embarrassed the Saudi authorities.

Kim Howells, the British Minister for Middle East Affairs, raised the issue of human rights with the Saudi authorities during a visit to the Kingdom this week. “He also mentioned certain high profile cases that have made international headlines recently,” a British official told The Times.

A 37-year-old American businesswoman and mother-of-three was recently thrown in jail for sitting with a male colleague at a Starbucks coffee shop.

In another high-profile case, an illiterate Saudi woman is hoping that King Abdullah will spare her life after she was condemned to death for “witchcraft.” Her accusers included a man who claimed that the woman, Fawzi Falih, had made him impotent with her sorcery.

An international human rights group said Falih â€" who faces being publicly beheaded â€" was allegedly beaten by religious police and forced into fingerprinting a false confession.

Prosecutors are currently investigating 57 young men arrested last week for flirting with girls at shopping centres in Mecca. They were accused of wearing indecent clothes, playing loud music and dancing in order to catch the attention of girls. The men insisted they were just trying to “have fun” without “imposing themselves” on the women.

And a teenaged victim of a gang rape was sentenced last year to 200 lashes and six years in jail for having been in an unrelated man’s car at the time. She was pardoned by King Abdullah, although he maintained the sentence had been fair.

General Topic / Do you ever let disability stop you?
February 29, 2008, 10:44:04 AM
SALEM, Ore.  â€"  So a U.S. Senate candidate with a metal hook for a left hand walks into a bar.

The candidate, Steve Novick, has bellied up next to a voter and the two talk about politics. The other guy struggles to twist off a beer cap. Novick coolly reaches over, grabs the bottle and deftly uses his metal hook to pop it open, telling the other man: "We can't afford just politics as usual."

It's a political ad unlike any other this season, and the video has become a hit on YouTube.

Novick, who was born with multiple disabilities, is going right for the funny bone in his bid to challenge a Republican incumbent.

His second TV ad, which spoofs the old TV game show "To Tell the Truth," plays on his stature â€" he's only 4-foot-9.

"I'm Steve Novick," intones an evenly tanned, perfectly coifed gentleman in a natty suit. "And I'll stand up for everybody, not just the richest 1 percent."

Then the camera pivots down, way down.

"Actually," Novick says, "I'm the real Steve Novick. I don't look like the typical politician, but I won't act like one, either. I will fight for the little guy."

Novick, 44, is seeking the Democratic nomination to take on Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith, who, like the other man in the second commercial, is tall and good-looking.

Unfortunately for Novick, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has chosen to back Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley in the May 20 primary, and has already directed nearly $100,000 to his campaign.

What little polling has been done in the Democratic race showed the two candidates were virtually tied as of last month. Most people surveyed said they were undecided.

Novick, a Portland lawyer, hopes the ads draw attention to his personal story of overcoming disabilities. Besides his left hand, he is missing one of the two major bones between the knee and foot in both legs, giving him an uneven gait.

He graduated at age 18 from the University of Oregon and later was the youngest member of Harvard Law School's Class of 1984.

As a U.S. Justice Department lawyer, he battled polluters before returning to Oregon to fight against anti-tax and anti-union initiatives.

Both of Novick's campaign ads were produced by a Milwaukee firm that helped Russ Feingold win a Wisconsin Senate seat in 1992 by contrasting the little-known challenger's modest home with the fancier home of his well-heeled opponent.

"It's nothing to shy away from and nothing to hide," said Neal Bardele, a partner with Eichenbaum & Associates. "He is a very confident man, a very intelligent man. One of our objectives is to get people to know him, and to know he is not a traditional politician."

In another YouTube video, Novick supporters can be seen wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Hooked on Novick," showing tiny metal hooks on the letters.

But humor has to be delicately applied. Overuse it, and politicians can risk falling flat, as Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd did in a widely panned TV ad joking about his mane of white hair that ran in Iowa last fall.

Rudy Giuliani drew groans for a holiday commercial in which he schmoozed with Santa while wearing a Rudolph's nose-red sweater vest. Hillary Clinton was lampooned for a Christmas ad in which she was seen wrapping "presents" to give to the country, marked with tags reading "universal health care" and "bring the troops home."

Voters can also be skittish about candidates who run funny ads in a country that's perpetually on orange terrorism alert. That's one reason why strategists for comedian Al Franken kept a lid on laugh-out-loud material in his opening round of TV ads for the Minnesota Senate race.

"Al is taking this campaign seriously, and if he uses humor, it will only be in the service of talking about the very serious reasons he is running for the Senate," Franken spokesman Andy Barr said.

In Oregon, the race between Merkley and Novick has been civil. Merkley even made his own attempt at humor. A few weeks ago, he walked away from a rollover car crash with just a bump on his head.

In a video released by his campaign, Merkley is shown dangling upside-down in a rolled-over car. He says into his cell phone: "We just flipped the car. It's just like the Bush economy. It's gone belly up."

General Topic / Even a Prince fights the bad guys
February 29, 2008, 10:32:51 AM
PRINCE HARRY has been secretly fighting the Taliban on the front line in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defense confirmed today.

The 23-year-old Household Cavalry officer has spent the past 10 weeks serving in war-ravaged Helmand Province.

The deployment had been cloaked in secrecy under a news blackout deal agreed across the UK media to prevent details reaching the Taliban and endangering Harry and his comrades.

But the arrangement broke down today after news was leaked out on the US website the Drudge Report.

As part of the deal a group of journalists had visited the prince in Helmand on condition that details would only be publicised once he was safely back in the UK.

The deal was arranged after Harry’s planned tour to Iraq last year had to be cancelled because of a security risk sparked by publicity.

Chief of the General Staff Sir Richard Dannatt, who is head of the British Army, said he was disappointed the news had leaked.

In a statement, he said: “I am very disappointed that foreign websites have decided to run this story without consulting us.

“This is in stark contrast to the highly responsible attitude that the whole of the UK print and broadcast media, along with a small number of overseas, who have entered into an understanding with us over the coverage of Prince Harry on operations.

“After a lengthy period of discussion between the MoD and the editors of regional, national and international media, the editors took the commendable attitude to restrain their coverage.

“I would like to thank them for that and I do appreciate that once the story was in the public domain, they had no choice but to follow suit.

“What the last two months have shown is that it is perfectly possible for Prince Harry to be employed just the same as other Army officers of his rank and experience.

“His conduct on operations in Afghanistan has been exemplary.

“He has been fully involved in operations and has run the same risks as everyone else in his battlegroup.

  SEARCH NEWS / SHOWBIZ for:
“In common with all of his generation in the Army today, he is a credit to the nation.

“In deciding to deploy him to Afghanistan, it was my judgment that with an understanding with the media not to broadcast his whereabouts, the risk in doing was manageable.

“Now that the story is in the public domain, the Chief of Defence Staff and I will take advice from the operational commanders about whether his deployment can continue.

“I now appeal to the media to restrain from attempting to report Prince Harry’s every move and return to our understanding.”

After completing two tours in Iraq, Sgt. Wayne Leyde won $1 million from a scratch-and-win lotto ticket on Tuesday.

Now that he's won, Leyde, a 26-year-old member of the Washington National Guard, says he's still going to volunteer to go back to Iraq for a third tour and won't spend any of the money in the meantime.

Leyde was driving near his home in Mead, Washington when he stopped at a store on the side of the road and bought a ticket.

"I decided to walk into a local Zip Trip. I got a Coke and beef jerky and walked up to the counter and thought I'd pick up a few scratch tickets and try my luck. I was on my way out when the lady said, 'Do you have a lucky scratch coin?'

"I said 'no, you gave me a dime and nickel back.'"

"She said 'no, try this,'" handing Leyde a penny. "On my way home I started scratching tickets. They were losers. I'm thinking, boy, that lady didn't know what she was talking about."

Leyde couldn't believe it when he scratched a winning ticket, but he still plans to return to Iraq.

"It was a commitment I made about three months ago. I'm going to stick to it," Leyde said about his decision.

The sergeant says rents have gone sky high where he and his parents live in the Mount Spokane area of Washington and that, for now, he's not going to spend any of the money.

"For right now, I'm going to hold off [spending] and let reality sink back to earth. This is a true blessing. I'm going to turn it around and see if I can bless other people with this," Leyde said.

We may have differed in how we express our opinion on how our Mother Earth should be taken cared of but I am certain of one thing that we all agree and share the same desire to protect Mother Earth.  In our own little ways, (we can do more, I suppose) consciously or sub-consciously, we take care of her. We enjoy our life today because God blessed us a beautiful Mother Earth to live in. So then we continue to take care of Her, so the generations to come will have a chance to enjoy as well!

Just one comment lang:  She should dress a little better dili lang mura'g mo adto sa mercado.  Part man na sa "packaging" or image building ba.  IMO. :D

Yet, mao ni akong nadawat na invitation sa PBA Legends basketball tournament:

Description
The Event is a series of exhibition basketball games, under the auspices of the PBA Legends USA Foundation, involving the most colorful former superstar athletes of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to be held in four cities in California.

The games will be held on March 8 in Union City; March  9 in Sacramento;  March 15 in Los Angeles; and March 16 in San Diego.  The series is a project of our PBA Legends USA Foundation.

The PBA is the Philippine counterpart of the NBA in America.

The PBA Legends USA Foundation will organize, market and manage the games. The Philippine-based superstar athletes, the equivalent of the Magic Johnsons and Larry Birds of the NBA, are flying from Manila for the series.

Some of the athletes participating in the games are Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio,  Ramon Fernandez, Philip Cesar, Samboy Lim, Jojo Lastimosa, Manny Victorino, Vergel Meneses, Hector Calma, Dindo Pumaren, Jerry Codinera, Gerry Esplana, Olsen Racela, Bong Ravena, Johnny Abarrientos, Sonny Cabatu, and Dwight Lago, including the top two Filipino basketball coaches, Baby Dalupan and Dante Silverio.  Robert Jaworski might also join the group.

Ronnie Nathanielsz of Manila Standard Today and Beth Celis of the Philippine Daily Express will provide the media coverage.

Former PBA athletes who reside in America, and active members of the Foundation, will join their Philippine-based colleagues in the sports festival. The players are Abe King, Yoyoy Villamin, Rino Salazar, Bernie Fabiosa, Marte Saldana, Noni Robles, Ricky Brown, Yves Dignadice, Onchie dela Cruz, Peter Aguilar, Jango Rivera, Jerome Cueto, Chris Bade and many others.

The 2008 Basketball Series will provide entertainment and quality time (reminiscences and love for mother country) to Filipino Americans and guests who are nostalgic for their sports heroes; and to raise funds for the Foundation. The funds will, in turn, support the charitable and educational projects of the Foundation in the Philippines and the United States. Such projects include scholarship grants to needy and deserving students in the high school and college levels; medical and dental missions for the poorest of the poor, involving volunteer Filam and Filipino doctors; collaboration with other charitable organizations; basketball clinics; and other philanthropies, including assistance to former athletes in dire straits.

Notes
Tickets are $20.00 per person advance and $25.00 at the door (Gen. Admission).

Here's an excerpt of one of the news posted in cnn.com tonight:

To say "the world is watching" the election would be an understatement. In fact, it has attracted an unprecedented level of interest overseas. Arab satellite networks are shelling out big bucks to send reporters to trail the candidates around the country.

Foreign diplomats have traveled to primaries such as Iowa and New Hampshire and confess their governments are far more interested in discussing the latest from the campaign trail than they are talking about the dry diplomatic issues of today.

Ang akong buhaton:  I will talk again to the helpers and discuss with them without being intimidating.  I will tell them na  "it was my fault I forgot my money in my pocket where you found it.  Na temp lang mo.  So karon, ibalik na ninyo sa ako kay ako nang sapi.  If dili, mag file ko kaso and that I will get statement from where nila gipabayloan ninyo ang dollars".

Maluoy man pod ta kay basin lang lagi na tintal sa money but if, after being told na dili to mao ilang gibuhat and yet magmagahi na ilang i keep then they needed to be taught a lesson na.

4 Fights That Men Fear
Posted Tue, Feb 26, 2008, 10:02 am PST

Typically, guys like fights when they're at a hockey game, or watching reality TV. But guys don't particularly like fights when they happen in relationships.

We shy away from confrontation for several reasons: first, men win arguments with women about as often as Dennis Kucinich wins presidential primaries.

Second, we don't have that much we want to argue about. When Rodney King asked, "Can't we all just get along?" there were millions of guys nodding their heads, asking the same thing. For the vast majority of guys, fighting is failure, and quite possibly a violation of local noise ordinances.

We may have a few little things to quibble about (Where in the world did you put my Strokes concert T-shirt?), but for the most part, we'll do anything to avoid conflict, especially these types of conflict:

The "Blackberry" Fight

You look at it too much. Does that thing always have to be on? You work way too much! You're right, you're right, and you're right. When a man's work is pitted against his relationship for time and attention, he can feel utterly conflicted.

Many men feel an intense pressure to succeed, to be the one who's counted on, to be hardwired into whatever's happening, even if it's not much. And when you tell him that he should feel that way about you rather than the job, he retreats.

That's because he'd rather make a choice between right and wrong than the choice you're asking him to make: The choice between two things that are both important, but vastly different.

The "Ex" Fight

You want to know what she's like, what she does, why your man was into her, and why they broke up. Him? He wants to stay as tight-lipped as the CIA's man in Moscow.

Which only fuels the speculation - she must've been great, she must've broken up with him, she must've been the love of his life. The truth may be none of those things, but he wants to reveal as little as possible because there's no upside.

If he recalls any positives about her, he's afraid you'll compare, and think poorly of yourself. If he says nasty things about his ex, he loses two ways: you'll think badly of him for unchivalrous behavior, and wonder why he was with such a no-good girlfriend in the first place.

The "Finale" Fight

When a break-up is inevitable, a guy doesn't want to go out with shouts, insults, crying, and random appliance tossing. Even though this relationship may have not worked out entirely the way either of you had pictured, he doesn't want it to end badly.

Why? Because there's a big part of him that cares very much about his rep; he doesn't want to be perceived as a bad guy, or a mean one, or some jerk who deserves to be hit by the cross-town bus next time he crosses the street.

Even if he wants an ending, he doesn't want it to be a bad one - which is why many breakup-minded men try to make a soft landing back in the singles world: Slowly, gently, and perhaps unfairly as well.

The "Wedding" Fights

Not the wedding fight, as in whether or not to have one. But fights, as in plural, the kind that happen between the first ring he puts on your finger, and the second. He knows you want him involved in all the decisions big (who to invite) and small (what style napkins). He knows that "It's up to you" is usually one of the "Five Things You Should Never Say to a Woman," as this article artfully instructs (hint: make sure he reads and heeds it!).

But in this case, his acquiescence isn't because he's uninterested; it's because he respects that this is your (and possibly your mother's) big day, so enjoy it, do what you want, and don't get mad because he won't tell you if he prefers the butter cream icing or the marzipan.

As for other kinds of fights, here's a great list of common face-offs and how men will try to defuse them. See if you recognize any of his tactics.

General Topic / KC is UN Ambassador Against Hunger
February 28, 2008, 07:01:03 AM
Young Filipino actress KC Concepcion was chosen by United Nations to be the Ambassador Against Hunger of the World Food Program.

KC's first assignment was in Pikit, North Cotabato, where she distributed take-home rice and took part in onsite feeding and distribution of warm formulated meals in selected schools last February 18.

Hot meals are given to 16,000 children in 277 schools and daycare centers. The WFP has increased enrolment by 40 percent and has sustained attendance by 94 percent in assisted schools.

Before she was chosen for this U-N role, KC went on a three-month screening process and got approved by three officesâ€"Rome, Vatican, and Thailand. She's only the third to be chosen from Southeast Asia.

"I am so happy to be connected with the right channels talaga. It's quite a feat to feed hungry children everyday and help resolve conflict and keep them in school, Hopefully, we can get the government to implement feeding programs properly and efficiently too by setting a big example on how things should be done. The problem is that the feeding program of our government limits to 19 days of feeding out of 80. So it becomes more symbolic. We better do something to engage the youth too apart from raising awareness to those who can donate," Filipino actress said.

KC stressed "that the work of the WFP to put the issue of hunger at the center is important, as a child dies of hunger somewhere around the world. Kawawa naman. The focus here is food for school to make kids stay in school. It also lessens child labor. I want sana to have hunger and malnutrition covered by media at least once a week because it is an issue that is as important or even more so but none is paying too much attention to it. That's part of my job, to help WFP work to put the issue of hunger at the center."
