Looking back at her life, Mandy Dela Rama doesn't have any regrets.

Already in her 40s, for Mandy Dela Rama, age is nothing but a number. Unlike most women, Mandy is fearless about aging. “I live the age that I am now,” she says.

She says that she has no regrets. “Everything that happens in your life makes you who you are today. I am very fulfilled as a woman and as a mother.” In her 20s, she always wondered what it was like to be 40. She didn’t think her 20s would be over in the blink of an eye.

When asked if she would like to find the fountain of youth, she says that she would never want to be forever young. “That would stunt growth if you are always fighting your age and who you are. Just take it a step at a time and celebrate every milestone.” Instead of looking up to Peter Pan who is eternally young, she looks up to Benjamin Button, the man who starts aging backwards. “That way, you get to bring the knowledge with you when you get younger.” What she misses most is the carefree feeling that comes with being young. “When you’re younger, there are less ‘real’ problems. But when you look back, all those problems are just actually magnified in your mind.”

As you get older, sometimes life tests your character. Mandy has took several risks and chances in her life and she says that she’s happy she did. She learned that people have the ability to survive on their own and for that she is proud.

Medyo poisonous tuod ni nga tanom (Dieffenbachia: common name, dumb cane), but it's not that dangerous. In fact,

In the Philippines, dumb cane plant is being studied; researchers have found that dumb cane plant contains active ingredients that cause antiangiogenic effect potential for the treatment of cancer. Antiangiogenesis is a process that inhibits the growth and development of new blood vessels in the body.

Antiangiogenesis controls the spread of tumour cells in the body by disabling the transport of nutrients toward the cancerous cells. Normally, tumour starts from a single cell and divides to make more cancer cells. The growth of malignant cells will depend on the availability of specific nutrients being transported by blood vessels.

Findings of the study claimed that dumb cane’s ability to prevent blood vessel growth and development can be possibly used in the formulation of anti-cancer drug to help prevent the spread of cancer cells in the human body.

Strong characters, deep feelings

Barbiere said he chose arias, duets  and other highlights of Verdi’s most famous operas  also popular in the Philippines.

“The sequence follows the most essential aspects of Verdi’s life,” he added. “The last part of Verdi’s life should not be avoided.”

One of the composer’s last operas was the masterpiece “Aida,” which premiered in 1871 to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal.

“In his new age,” Barbiere said, “Verdi was a man full of power. He created strong characters with deep feelings, passion and extreme love. The characters change harmonically speaking. The way he treated the voice was also very different. His ideas were universal. He was interested in events in other countries.”

The music director said he had conducted all over the world, “but I feel warm reaction from Filipino audiences here and abroad.”

As for the PPO members, he found them “versatile, intelligent. They switch to their own culture but they can play the music of other countries, an international repertoire.”

A titan

“It is difficult to call Verdi the greatest Italian composer because there are different views, said Roscigno. “But he is the most famous, for sure. His music is performed all over the world, and he is an icon for us Italians. His name is synonymous with opera itself.”

Verdi (1813-1901), the ambassador noted, “is rooted in our history as he lived through most of the 19th century. Italy was then divided into states, and was unified in 1861. He became a symbol of Italy, was elected a senator, and was a pillar of the new state of Italy. He is part of our heritage.”

A-listed talents

Also present at the press con were conductor Ruggero Barbieri, former music director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, who will once again conduct the PPO at the show; Italian tenor Gian Luca Pasolini; and Madrid-born baritone Alvaro Lozano.

Pasolini and Lozano will be performing with A-listed opera singers Rachelle Gerodias, soprano; Thea Perez, soprano; Nenen Espina, mezzo; Margarita Giannelli, soprano; Andrew Fernando, baritone; and Ronan Ferrer, tenor. Other performers are from Coro Tomasino and Ballet Philippines.

Alexander Cortez directs.

Russian and Austrian soldiers, seeking revenge following the Napoleonic invasion of their countries, descended upon the French-held village of Le Roncole, Piacenza in Italy on Oct. 10, 1813. They massacred innocent men, women and children.

Some of the women managed to flee to the church, but the soldiers pursued and killed them while they were praying. One of the women saved herself and her infant son, Giuseppe, by hiding in the belfry.

“And this is how Giuseppe Verdi was saved from the sword that he might enrich the world with his song,” wrote the biographers Henry Thomas and Dana Lee (“Living Biographies of Great Composers,” Halcyon House, New York).

It is Verdi’s 200th birth anniversary, an event being celebrated worldwide. Here in Manila, the bicentennial will be marked by a gala concert featuring highlights from Verdi’s beloved operas at the Cultural Center of the Philippines tomorrow, Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m.

This was announced by Italian Ambassador Massimo Roscigno at a press conference at The Peninsula Manila in Makati City. The concert will be presented by the Italian Embassy, the Philippine-Italian Association, Rustan’s and CCP.

The Straits Times earlier reported that the rioting by mainly foreign workers started after a bus hit a Bangladeshi worker, but this was later denied by the Bangladesh High Commissioner Monday morning.

“In some press and media reports there has been unsubstantiated news reporting which says that a Bangladeshi worker was hit by a bus that escalated the riot incident,” said Mahbub Uz Zaman in a statement.

“I want to categorically state that as per available information the news reports that appeared on a section of media and news involving a Bangladeshi worker is not based on facts.”

A total of 18 people, including four SCDF personnel, were sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment.

The riot raised concerns among people in Singapore about safety in the city state and how such incidents could be prevented.

On Yahoo Singapore's Facebook page, Ricky Woon commented: "This matter is under control but the underlying issues are not solve(d). If things continue to be this way and we are being complacent, when things happen again it could be our last chance to react. Will you guys want our country to be back to how it is and sleep in peace?"

News of the riot quickly spread on social media as well, triggering a flurry of tweets and posts about the turn of events in usually peaceful Singapore.

Singapore's civil defence officers extinguish burning vehicles following a riot in Singapore's Little India district.
#14133
The riot broke out after a fatal traffic accident occurred at 9:23 Sunday night between a private bus and an Indian construction worker who was crossing the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road, police said.

The crash victim has been identified Sakthivel Kumaravelu, a 33-year-old construction worker who has been working with Heng Hup Soon, a scaffolding company, for about two years. Meanwhile, the driver of the bus, identified as a Singaporean, is not under arrest but receiving treatment in hospital.

First responders from SCDF who arrived at the scene saw Kumaravelu, who was pronounced dead on the scene, trapped under a bus. During efforts to extricate him from under the bus, projectiles such as bottles started to be thrown at the personnel as tensions escalated.

Rioters then began attacking the bus, smashing the front windscreen and windows. Photos on social media showed an ambulance and police cars were set on fire and overturned.

To control the two-hour riot, police said they activated resources from Special Operations Command and Gurkha Contingent to the scene. In total, 300 police were deployed but no shots were fired from any weapon, lethal or non-lethal, throughout the incident, police said.

Little India is a popular hangout and meeting place, especially on Sunday night, with Singapore's sizeable workforce of foreign labour from South Asia.
#14134
During the chaos that ensued, at least two police vehicles were overturned and an ambulance set on fire, which sent clouds of black smoke billowing across the night sky.

In one shocking video, a man can be seen trying to smash the windscreen of the private bus that was involved in the accident with a plastic dustbin.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean said, "This is a serious incident which has resulted in injuries and damage to public property. The situation is now under control. Police will spare no efforts to apprehend the subjects involved in the riots."

An estimated 400 people rioted in Little India late Sunday night after an accident with a bus led to one person's death, according to the police.

The riot saw ten officers injured, and damage to five police vehicles, one ambulance and several private vehicles, said police in a statement in the wee hours of the morning Monday.

27 subjects have been arrested, with police appealing for more information from eyewitnesses.

$528 Million Luxury Hotel Being Built In An Abandoned Chinese Quarry
http://craynews.com/528-million-luxury-hotel-being-built-in-an-abandoned-chinese-quarry/
By Sarah Comorant on June 29, 2013

Construction has officially begun on a £345 million ($528 million) resort project in an abandoned quarry in China’s Songjiang District, The Daily Mail reports.

Known as the Songjiang Shimao Hotel, the resort is part of a larger development plan to turn the area into a theme park, according to Li Xuyang, a senior manager for the Shimao Group.

Atkin, the British firm that designed the hotel, wanted to make sure it blended in with the landscape. They are planning to build an eco-friendly roof with grass and trees that uses natural resources for power.

Two of the building’s 19 stories will be underwater with aquarium-style walls, so guests can look out into the quarry. The other 17 stories will be built inside the cave, which is at the base of the Tianmenshan Mountain, according to The Daily Mail.

The entire project is expected to take around three years to complete, opening in approximately 2015 with an average cost of £200 â€" or $306 â€" a room per night, The Daily Mail reports.

Overkill? A Man Set His House On Fire to Kill Bedbugs
By Sarah Comorant on June 14, 2013

WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) â€" A New Jersey house fire is being blamed on a homeowner’s battle against bedbugs.

A county spokeswoman says the homeowner in the southern New Jersey town of Woodbury was using a space heater, a hair dryer and a heat gun Tuesday to try to eradicate the pests in a second-floor bedroom. The combination sparked a fire.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency says very high, sustained heat can kill bedbugs, but raising the temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won’t do the job. It says special equipment is needed.

Woodbury Fire Marshal Joseph Buono tells WPVI-TV in nearby Philadelphia that quick Internet remedies for killing bedbugs are a “catastrophe in the making.” He says the afflicted should “call the professionals.”

The homeowner was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. He wasn’t identified.

Netizens react

Fans on the Internet were quick to weigh in on the news.

Some were concerned that Gadot may not the best choice for the role. Some commented that Wonder Woman’s actress should be a tall, athletic-looking woman, since the character is an Amazon warrior. Others drew comparisons between Gadot and actress Lynda Carter, whose portrayal of the superheroine in a television show that ran from 1975 to 1979 remains the gold standard for many fans.

However, others were happy about the news, and were especially excited by the possibility of seeing other DC characters on the big screen as well. Some users also noted that Gadot’s Israeli heritage made her an interesting casting choice.

Comic book creators seemed optimistic about the news. Writer Gail Simone tweeted that she was “cautiously optimistic” about the news, while screenwriter Bryan Lynch said that he loves the casting news and believes that the Batman/Superman movie should be called a “Justice League” movie instead.

Snyder also believes that Gadot, who is a professional sports trainer and has served two years in the Israel Defense Forces, is a good choice for the role.

“Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character,” said Snyder. Gadot joins Affleck and Henry Cavill (Superman) on the film, which is currently in production. â€" TJD, GMA News

GMA News Online â€" Thu, Dec 5, 2013

DC Comics and Warner Bros. have just released official confirmation that another beloved character will join the Last Son of Krypton and the Dark Knight on the silver screen in 2015.

Gal Gadot, who played Gisele Yashar in the "Fast & Furious" movies, has officially been cast as Wonder Woman in the currently-untitled sequel.

Newsarama reports that writer-director Zack Snyder affirms the Amazon Princess’s importance in the DC mythos. “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe," said Snyder.

The character, created by psychologist William Moulton Marston, debuted in All Star Comics #8 in December 1941. Also known as Princess Diana, the heroine hails from the fictional island of Themyscira, a sovereign nation of Amazons under the leadership of her mother, Queen Hippolyta.

Wonder Woman is one of the most recognizable superheroines in the world, enduring over 70 years of publication. She has also served as a longtime member of the Justice League of America, a famous fictional superhero team that also counts Superman and Batman among its roster.

Weird and Extreme / Elevator Enthusiasts
December 08, 2013, 12:47:10 PM

Elevators aren’t really a thing you put much thought into. After all, you just hop in, and after a few seconds you hop off again and go about your day.

Well, not for everyone. As it turns out, there’s a quirky little subculture dedicated entirely to the love of elevators. Known as Elevator Enthusiasts, these people ride elevators up and down and record their experiences so that they can be shared later on the Internet with fellow enthusiasts across the world. One could say that this subculture really took off thanks to media-sharing platforms such as YouTube, as there are now literally thousands of videos which have been uploaded to the site. But now for the burning question on everyone’s mind: What makes these enthusiasts so passionate about elevators? And why, of all things, elevators?

Apparently, these enthusiasts like to admire the little details of the machine: button placement, lighting, the doors, and the views. As for the latter question, it’s really subjective. Some people are obsessed with vintage cars, while others really like elevators. Although it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, you really have to admire these elevator-riding communities for doing what they enjoy and love. -- http://listverse.com/

(/EIM)(BANAT NEWS)

Lalueza-Fox said the question of the mystery fourth ancestor is a "paleontological debate," but that the genetic work done by Reich and his colleagues opens the door to a deeper understanding of the individual diversity of ancient human ancestors. New techniques will enable researchers to tease out original DNA from later contaminants, he said.

"Some samples that were considered not suitable for genomic approaches are now going to be good samples," Lalueza-Fox said.

In the past, Lalueza-Fox said, geneticists were stuck trying to extrapolate details about human evolution from modern human DNA. Now, he said, they can go directly to the ancient DNA.

"We have been trying to understand human evolution from the study of modern human genomes, but clearly we missed part of the picture, which is now emerging from ancient hominin genomes," Lalueza-Fox said.

New genomes, new discoveries

The new research has been submitted to a scientific journal for publication. Under the journal's rules, lead author Reich cannot speak to the news media about the study until the paper comes out.

A Nature News reporter who attended the Nov. 18 talk, however, reports that Reich and his colleagues have created much more complete sequences of the Denisovan and Neanderthal genomes than those used in previous research.

The sequences confirmed previous findings that Denisovans mated with the ancestors of Pacific Islanders and East Asians, but also revealed a surprise: Genetic traces of an unknown population of human ancestors were found in the Denisovan gene, suggesting even more interbreeding than previously expected. Mark Thomas, an evolutionary geneticist at University College London, described the ancient environment to Nature as a "'Lord of the Rings'-type world" with many human populations living side-by-side.

Ancient human lineages

Neanderthals are an extinct group of humans who lived between about 30,000 and 130,000 years ago. Despite their reputation as bone-headed dummies, Neanderthals were likely as advanced as modern humans in areas such as tool-making, though they were probably less socially adept.

Denisovans are a far more mysterious group. These early humans lived in Siberia and probably split off from the branch of the human family tree that would eventually give rise to Neanderthals about 300,000 years ago. Little is known about how Denisovans lived and what they looked like.

But genetic analyses of Neanderthals, Denisovans and modern humans suggest the three groups occasionally had sex and produced offspring. Denisovan genes show up in modern Pacific Islanders and in people from Southeast Asia and southern China. Neanderthal genes appear in 1 to 4 percent of modern Eurasian people, suggesting that Homo sapiens and Neanderthals interbred after modern humans trekked out of Africa.

For unknown reasons, Homo sapiens are the only human survivors, as all others in the Homo genus eventually went extinct.

A girl goes nose-to-nose with a Neanderthal statue in Germany. Ancient DNA research is increasingly revealing the genetic links between modern humans and our extinct ancestors, including Neanderthals and the mysterious Denisovans.

A new, improved sequencing of ancient human relative genomes reveals that Homo sapiens didn't only have sex with Neanderthals and a little-understood line of humans called Denisovans. A fourth, mystery lineage of humans was in the mix, too.

As reported by the news arm of the journal Nature, new genetic evidence suggests that several hominids â€" human relatives closer than humans' current living cousin, the chimpanzee â€" interbred more than 30,000 years ago. This group of kissing cousins included an unknown human ancestor not yet revealed by the ancient DNA record.

"It's implied it could be something like Homo erectus or similar," said Carles Lalueza-Fox, a paleogenomics researcher at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain, who was not involved in the research, but who was present at a talk on the findings given by lead author David Reich of Harvard Medical School at a meeting on ancient DNA sponsored by the Royal Society in London on Nov. 18. Homo erectus is an extinct species of human that originated in India and spread into Asia.
