How to Overcome a Matrimonial Crisis - Don't conceive a baby if there's a serious crisis in the couple!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

To overcome any type of matrimonial crisis, first you have to be 100% sure that there is a real mutual desire to solve the issues and stop searching for the ‘guilty one’; instead, try to find the possible cause(s) of your problems, and only then will you two have a chance of discovering the proper remedy.

It is better if an expert in family therapy acts as mediator or, at least, an experienced person in which the spouses can confide. It’s all about humility and admitting that you have a problem. And remember, this cannot be done in one day; ‘heling’ is a gradual process, closely linked to the analysis of the causes that have motivated the crisis.

Amongst the most common causes that induce a matrimonial crisis are:
_ always displaying a bad mood
_repeating the failures and defects all day long
_never agreeing with the other
_turn any trifle into a big problem
_not expressing what you think or feel
_not being empathetic with the other (putting yourself in his/her place)
_ always wanting to impose your own ideas/criteria
_involving the children in the conflicts
_not being available (too much work)
_letting your family intervene in the conflicts between you and your husband/wife

The main remedies suggested by the psychologists are:

_be more tolerant and empathetic with your partner
_take into account you own imperfections
_take care of the details
_mutual respect
_concentrate on the positive aspects in the couple
_do not continuously try to correct/change all minor defects that your partner might have
_appreciate your partner’s virtues, abilities and strong points
_ try to always ‘refresh’ your relationship
_express positive feelings
_try to avoid the routine
_do not alienate your partner from his/her family or isolate him/her socially

Many couples think that conceiving a baby can be a solution to the conflicts. In fact, the birth of a child can definitively ruin an already damaged relationship. This can be the last straw, as the couple cannot adapt to the new circumstances and the disputes increase. Many women decide to divorce when they're pregnant, because the situation becomes unbearable for them, and they don’t want their child to be brought up and educated in such an conflictual environment.

Glasses That Help You See Through Clothes - The Terahertz technology
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

This is like a sci-fi movie ("Total Recall" is the first example that comes to my mind) scene becoming reality, making one of our naughty dreams come true! While our regular sun glasses help us take quick peeks at the hot girls around us without them even noticing it (or so we like to think), this new technology breaks the limit.

The invention is not only for kinky individuals. The new technology would also allow security agents to spot from a distance a weapon hidden in the coat of a terrorist, before this one realizes he's been discovered.

The new technology could be soon delivered by Advance Technology Center, the research laboratory of the Birtish company BAE Systems and it is based on a tiny segment of the radio wave spectrum: the Terahertz band.

These waves have a frequency between that of the radar microwaves and the infrared waves. At 1.000.000 megahertz, they are invisible and do not affect the eye. Unlike X rays, the Terahertz waves are able to detect from far away objects that are hidden under the clothes or packaging materials. The results of the first tests are amazing. Hidden behind a screen, the researchers were able to see the people as if they wore no clothes.

The technology would be used for future applications not only in the anti-terrorist defense systems, detecting weapons, explosive and toxic chemicals, but also in the medical field, these waves being able to detect skin cancer and tooth decay earlier, and to fight against drug trafficking.

The terahertz technology for screening devices has been investigated also at Sandia National Laboratories, a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) laboratory. "We believe it will find applications in advanced communication systems and high-resolution radars," said Mike Wanke, principal investigator at Sandia. "Most materials and chemicals have their own unique terahertz spectral signatures. A terahertz transceiver system would be able to measure, for example, the signature of a gas and determine what it is.", he added.

The technology could also be used by astronomers, as it can detect chemicals in the nebula and planetary atmospheres.

Weird and Extreme / The 'Anti-Snoring' Pillow

The 'Anti-Snoring' Pillow - If it does not work, at least it gives you a neck massage
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Snoring can be fun, but just in comedies. In real life, snoring can ruin marriages and relationships. Snoring can make people feel less sexy, cause tensions in a couple and make partners fear its negative effects on a long-term relationship. But the most dangerous outcome is lack of sleep and exhaustion. Alcohol and junk food only manage to make just spur it.

Just in the UK, 15 million people suffer because of a ‘snoring partner’, who deprives them of about two hours of sleep per night (which would be two sleeping years in a lifetime!). Over 40 % of middle-aged people, and twice as many men as women, snore. "Lack of sleep can have a negative consequence on your physical, mental and emotional health. Poor sleep is linked with poor academic performance, increased risk of obesity and type two diabetes, divorce, suicide - the list goes on and on", said Marianne Davey, one of the founders of the British Snoring and Sleep Apnea Association.

No wonder scientists are trying to find various methods to fight the problem. Special mattresses, nose strips, clips and sprays have proved ineffective, so, what can be more accepted by people than a pillow that stops people from snoring? Daryoush Bazargani claims to have found the ‘cure’: a small computer, some sensors and air compartments.

Bazargani testing his invention

His special pillow changes the position of your head while you sleep, gently forcing your noggin into a different position, so that you do not wake up, stopping the snoring as soon as it begins. "The pillow is attached to a computer, which is the size of a book, rests on a bedside table, and analyzes snoring noises", Bazargani, a computer science professor at Germany's Rostock University, told Reuters.

"The computer then reduces or enlarges air compartments within the pillow to facilitate nasal airflow to minimize snoring as the user shifts during sleep."

"I invented it because I snore. I tried all sorts of products, but nothing worked. I hope people who use it will sleep more peacefully.", he told Reuters.

One Eye Is Blue, The Other Is Brown: A Mysterious Disease - Heterochromia iridis
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Human heterochromia

Do you know what David Bowie and many Border Collie dogs have in common? It is heterochromia, a condition in which the eyes are colored differently.

As heterochromia can also be encountered for hair or skin, the ocular one is called heterochromia iridis or heterochromia iridium. The iris can have a different hue
from the other (complete heterochromia), or only a part of it differs from the remainder (partial heterochromia or sectoral heterochromia).

The color differences are determined by variations of the melanin pigment within an iris, due to genetic causes (like Horner's syndrome), mosaicism (mutation occurred during the development), disease or injury. When hereditary, heterochromia is a dominant trait. The affected iris can be hyperpigmented (hyperchromic) or hypopigmented (hypochromic), usually connected with hyperplasia (overgrowth) of the iris tissues or hypoplasia (less tissue).

The melanocytes (melanin contains cells of the iris) do not synthesize in the absence of innervations, and unilateral congenital or birth injury of these nerves induces heterochromia.

Iris colobomata (gaps in the iris) produces heterochromia, the darker iris being the one with coloboma.

Microphthalmia (small eyes), determined by mutation or fetal alcohol syndrome, can induce heterochromia. Neoplasms (benign tumors) in the iris can change the color of just one eye (e.g. Lisch nodules). Melanosis (the abnormal increase of melanocytes) and port-wine stains make one eye darker.

Heterochromia in puppies of Border Collie

Individuals suffering from albinism, piebaldism (partial albinism), incontinentia pigmenti (hypopigmentation) are prone to heterochromia. Accidental iron deposits in the eye, iritis (iris infection) and certain eyedrops can induce heterochromia.

Heterochromia is much more common in mammals than in humans, particularly in some breeds, like cats (with one copper/orange eye and one blue eye), dogs, horses ("wall-eyed" with one brown and one white/blue eye), and water buffalo. In cats, the most prone are the Japanese Bobtails, Turkish Vans and the Turkish Angora while in dogs the Siberian Huskies, Australian Shepherds, and Border Collies.

Partial or sectoral heterochromia is a lot less frequent than total heterochromia and it’s usually associated with autosomally genetic diseases like Hirschsprung's and the Waardenburg syndrome.

Inspiration & Hope / say it now before its too late...
October 02, 2007, 11:46:48 PM
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep, I would
tuck you in more tightly and pray the
Lord, your soul to keep. If I knew it
would be the last time that I see you
walk out the door, I would give you a
hug and kiss and call you back for one
more. If I knew it would be the last
time I'd hear your voice lifted up in
praise, I would video tape each action
and word, so I could play them back day
after day.

If I knew it would be the last time, I
could spare an extra minute or two to
stop and say "I love you," instead of
assuming you would KNOW I do If I knew
it would be the last time I would be
there to share your day, well I'm sure
you'll have so many more, so I can let
just this one slip away. For surely
there's always tomorrow to make up for
an oversight, and we always get a second
chance to make everything right.

There will always be another day to say
our "I love you's," And certainly
there's another chance to say our
"Anything I can do's?" But just in case
I might be wrong, and today is all I
get, I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget. Tomorrow is
not promised to anyone, young or old
alike, And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight So
if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not
do it today? For if tomorrow never
comes, you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time for
a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were
too busy to grant someone, what turned
out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today, and
whisper in their ear, Tell them how much
you love them and that you'll always
hold them dear Take time to say "I'm
sorry," "Please forgive me," "Thank
you," or "It's okay." And if tomorrow
never comes, you'll have no regrets
about today.

The World's Smallest Living Dog - By height and by weight
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Boo Boo

Who could doubt that Chihuahua dogs, a race that has its origins in the north of Mexico, are the world's smallest pooches? The problem is now that there is a fierce competition on deciding upon the world's smallest Chihuahua/dog.

At one and a half year old, Boo Boo, a long coated Chihuahua, of just 4 inches (10 cm) tall and a weight of 1.5 pounds (675 g) has been crowned the new smallest living dog in the world by height by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Boo Boo has won the race in which her main competitor was Ducky, a smooth coat Chihuahua which is 4.9 inches (12 cm) tall.

"Boo Boo was fed with an eye dropper every 2 hours, when she was born, and weighed just 1 ounce (28g)." said Boo Boo's owner Mrs. Lana Elswick of Raceland, KY.

"The last dog to hold this title, which died, was 5.4 inches (14 cm) tall. She’s a little wiggle worm. I think that’s one reason why people started raising such big Chihuahuas; it’s very tedious to raise them small like Boo Boo, the way they are supposed to be," she said.

The previous record holder was Danka Kordak of Slovakia. Elswick has been raising Chihuahuas for 19 years.

Messier with Ducky

"To get this title, the dog has to be a year old so that it’s at adult size. Boo Boo turned a year old in April and the dog in Florida doesn’t turn a year old until June." said Elswick about Ducky, which was measured in June 2007.

Still, Ducky, weighing just 1.4 pounds (650 g), is the world's smallest dog by weight.

"People say Chihuahuas are miserable and evil. I think they're really sweet, and if you want to go some place, you can just throw him in your pocketbook." said his owner Lisa Messier.

Still, surprisingly, the world's smallest dog ever, as stated by Guinness, was not a Chihuahua but a dwarf Yorkshire terrier, just 2.8 inches (7 cm) tall.

Chocolate Fights off Fatigue - It's all about polyphenols
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Chocolate is known to be good for memory, sex drive, tooth health, mood and long life. But a new dark chocolate formula could also fight against symptoms of the chronic fatigue syndrome.

A pilot trial made at Hull York Medical School revealed that subjects experienced less fatigue when consuming dark chocolate with
a high cocoa level than white chocolate dyed brown. The results could be linked to the dark chocolate's effects on the brain molecule serotonin.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also called ME, has a wide array of symptoms but the main one is the profound muscle fatigue following physical activity.

"The idea for the study came after a patient reported feeling much better after swapping her normal milk chocolate for dark chocolate with a high cocoa solid content." said lead researcher Professor Steve Atkin, an expert in endocrinology. The research was made on 10 ME subjects who consumed a daily dose of 45g dark chocolate or white chocolate colored to resemble dark chocolate for two months. After a break that lasted one month, the subjects switched between the chocolate types for another two months.

Those on dark chocolate experienced significantly less fatigue and perceived more fatigue when they stopped consuming it. "Although it was a small study, two patients went back to work after being off for six months. Dark chocolate is high in polyphenols, which have been associated with health benefits such as a reduction in blood pressure. Also high polyphenols appear to improve levels of serotonin in the brain, which has been linked with chronic fatigue syndrome and that may be a mechanism." said Atkin.

Supplementary research, on bigger pools, is necessary to confirm the findings, but the dark chocolate quantities employed in the study did not make subjects put on any weight.

"If you derive benefit, then it's a no-harm, no-risk situation." said Atkin.

"It is important to distinguish between ME and other types of fatigue. But a little bit of what you fancy does you good - if it's not doing you any harm and it seems to be helping you then fair enough but I don't think it's an instant cure." said Jane Colby, executive director of The Young ME Sufferers Trust.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful if eating chocolate every day could alleviate the symptoms of chronic illness? If it were that easy, there would not be 250,000 people in the UK today whose lives are being been devastated by ME." said Heather Walker, Communications Manager, Action for ME.

Nakasulod na diay ni sila sa Saudi? One by stander told me that they are just lowly paid at $200 to $250 a month.

I have a bad feeling about this and I am afraid. They are invading like locust. Sooner, they will invade the US and UK job market and I expect a vast migration of Filipina nurses back to the Philippines.
Naa gani mga doctors na chinese sa GOSI...

See the Transparent Frogs! - Created by the Japanese
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The Japanese transparent frog

This newly engineered amphibian could save thousands of frogs from massacre worldwide, no matter if for dissections in biology classes or medical research. A Japanese team succeeded in producing see-through frogs, so you can see their organs, blood vessels and eggs without the need of removing skin and muscles.

"You can see through the skin how organs grow, how cancer starts and develops," said the lead researcher Masayuki Sumida, professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology of Hiroshima University.

"You can watch organs of the same frog over its entire life as you don't have to dissect it. The researcher can also observe how toxins affect bones, livers and other organs at lower costs," Sumida told AFP.

The Japanese transparent frog

Animal rights activists are already increasingly making pressures regarding humane alternatives for dissections, like computer simulations.

In nature, there are also some small see-through fish, like glassy fish of the family Ambassidae or the glass catfish of the Kryptopterus genus (both groups from southern Asia), and even semitransparent frogs, the glass frogs of the Cemtrolenidae family, found in tropical America and closely related to tree frogs.

The new transparent frog was obtained from Japanese brown frogs (Rana japonica), whose backs are normally ochre or brown. Two types of recessive genes produce the lack of coloration.

Sumida's team bred two frogs carrying recessive genes through artificial insemination and the first generation looked normal as the colorless genes were masked by normal color genes. But when the hybrids where interbred, they produced frogs with transparent skin from the tadpole stage, in a ratio of 1:16 (from 16 eggs, one produced a transparent frog).

The Japanese transparent tadpole

"You can see dramatic changes of organs when tadpoles mutate into frogs. Such frogs could theoretically exist in the wild but it is "virtually impossible" they would naturally inherit so many recessive genes," Sumida said.

The transparent frogs are fertile, producing only transparent frogs when interbred, but the offspring of their offspring die soon after hatching.

"As they have two sets of recessive genes, something wrong must kick in and kill them," Sumida said.

A glass frog (Centrolene grandisonae)

"Researchers could also inject into the transparent frogs an illuminating protein attached to a gene, which would light up the gene once it manifests -- for example, showing at what stage cancer starts. It would be unrealistic to apply the same method to mammals such as mice as their skin structure is different." said Sumida.

The new frog is the first four-legged transparent animal created by scientists.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth? - Activation and inhibition
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Why do they call them wisdom teeth, when in fact what they can really induce is actually pain!?... Beyond the popular belief, a new study shows that these annoying molars are the result of an imbalance in the developmental mechanism that permits them to make their way into the back of the jaw while pressing on the other teeth.

Adult humans possess 12 molars (the rearmost largest teeth, three on each side of the upper and lower jaws), and the last 4 molars are called the wisdom teeth, growing between 16 and 24 of an age. Sometimes, they start to crowd the jaw line, pressing on the nearby teeth, requiring a complex dental procedure: the wisdom-tooth extraction.

But what is really puzzling in humans is the enormous variation in the development of the wisdom teeth: why are they so well developed in some people, while others (luckily for them) may lack them all?

To get an answer, a team at the University of Helsinki in Finland cultivated mice bud teeth, finding that the teeth's growth is determined by the play between two molecular pathways, activation and inhibition, which tell how many teeth develop from the tooth germ (bud) and their size. When activation and inhibition are in balance, all three molars develop and have equal sizes, but if not, the size of the teeth varies.

If activation dominates, each tooth is increasingly bigger, with the wisdom tooth being the larger and able of causing troubles. In extremely rare cases, even a fourth molar can pop up. But if there is an inhibition domination, the molars grow increasingly tinier or sometimes they may not even develop altogether.

"Most early humans had all their wisdom teeth, with all of them measuring about the same size, so the two forces were likely in balance then," said co-author Jukka Jernvall.

"But now, our wisdom teeth are usually smaller than the rest of the molars, meaning inhibition might be winning out evolutionarily, though this differs from person to person," Jernvall told LiveScience.

"Even with wisdom teeth becoming smaller, they can still cause problems because the human jaw has also become smaller with time, which could be because as we learned to cook, our food became softer and required less power to chew," Jernvall said.

Bad news for the human species, good news for the stomatologists.
