The other uses of the okra plant:

1.  salad from the tender leaves and flowers

2.  okra jam: sa gamayng tubig pabukali ang inad-ad nga okra; pagawsa ang lapot;  remove seeds and okra slices; add sugar and lemon juice; let cool; transfer to container for future use

3.  coffee substitute: toast mature okra seeds until cooked; pound and keep for your coffee break

Pagka dali mikatay ni nga thread. Nagpasabot lang gyud nga mao-mao ra ta'g age range.

I remember in College I was very active member of the Youth Community Service Club.  Kada semana mag Alay Sayaw jud to generate funds for our community projects. Pagka sunod himo nako'g poster lahi na akong gibutang: "Gakus for a Cause: Benefit Dance for the Out-of-School Children of XYZ Barangay". Tuod man, daghang "manggagakus"ang mipalit og ticket.

Gusto mo'g mas disgusting nga description sa lunok?  Kanang nanggahi nga atuli, deep brown, basa-basa, gasinaw ang agi, eewwkkhhhh.

Lukot is mga itlog sa dunsol nga nagsumpaysumpay.

Where credit is due
FUNFARE by Ricardo F. Lo Updated May 15, 2002 12:00 (Philippine Star)

Funfare just got a letter from Ivar Tulfo Gica, founder-trustee of the Kultura Bisaya Foundation, Inc. and president of the Rotary Club of Manila East (1991-92), clarifying certain misconceptions about some classical Filipino songs and setting the record straight.

Gica’s letter is so informative that Funfare has decided to print it in full. Here it is:

I don’t fault people disseminating wrong information because even the book, National Artists of the Philippines, has lapses in recording the works of the late lamented national artist Levi Celerio. The book lists down Asia’s top Christmas carol, Ang Pasko ay Sumapit, as one of Celerio’s major works.

Also, Rosas Pandan as a folk song and its original lyrics as a major work of Celerio. It was, in fact, composed by Pio "Piux" Cabahar. Tinikling, a Waray folk song, was also credited as another major work of Celerio. It could have been from the pen of Justice Norberto Romualdez or poet-composer Iluminado Lucente. It’s not fair to Mang Levi as well as to the original composers and lyricists of the songs the way credits were endowed by the book.

The original Ang Pasko ay Sumapit is Kasadya Ning Taknaa, which is still the most popular Cebuano Christmas carol in the Visayas and Mindanao and being sung in its original Bisayan lyrics. The music was composed in 1933 by buddies Vicente Rubi with lyrics by Mariano Vestil, both of Mambaling, Cebu City. With the help of Manuel Velez of Sa Kabukiran fame, it was copyrighted also in 1933. In the early 1950s, Villar Records bought its rights, recorded and credited the entire work to the two Cebuano chums.

The song was used as background music in the film that starred Darmo von Frazier Acosta that wrongly credited Josefino Cenizal as the composer. Cenizal claimed he composed it, inspired by the strains from carolers on the Bantayan shorelines while he was passing through in a banca in Cebu where he evacuated during the war (1942), about a decade after it was copyrighted by Rubi and Vestil. But even if this was just claimed to be their Tagalog translation, its lyrics suffer in comparison to the spirit and ardor of the jagged musical lines characteristic of Bisayan compositions.

Observe the real McCoy: Kasadya ’ning taknaa dapit sa Kahimayaan/Maoy among nakita ang tagbalay nga masanagon/Bulahan ug bulahan ang tagbalay nga giawitan…

(‘Tis a moment of bliss, next door to Paradise/We behold a beaming family by this song blessed/…), incorporating the translation by Napoleon G. Rama, chairman of the prestigious Kulturang Bisaya Foundation, Inc. whose founding members include Chief Justice Davide, Ombudsman Aniano Desierto, retired Court of Appeals presiding justice Jesus Elbinias, former Sen. Rene Espina, UP President Francisco Nemenzo, ex-UP Pres. Jose Abueva, Concert pianist Ingrid Sala-Santamaria, Dr. Teresita Maceda, Dr. Erlinda Alburo, and others.

(Christmas is here/let us altogether/sing beautiful songs). Such a drab, dispirited translation, a poor parody of Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

Rosas Pandan was composed by Pio "Piux" Cabahar. Certainly, the book wrongly credited the late Levi Celerio, a Tagalog, to have authored these beautiful original Cebuano music and lyrics:

Ania si Rosas Pandan/gikan pa intawon sa kabukiran/kaninyo nakig-uban-uban/ning gi saulog sa inyong kalinganwan/balitaw day akong puhunan/maoy kabilin sa akong ginikanan/awit nga labing karaan pa/ug halandumon sa kabukiran... (Here’s Rumbling Rose/fresh from the wild woods/joining you in your rejoicing/Only blessed by a Balitaw/a priceless heirloom/of ancient songs/in the wilderness remembered…) Could a non-Cebuano-speaking literary talent have penned that?

The original lyrics for Tinikling is in Waray. Tinikling is about the tikling’s or the heron’s long-legged agility treading the paddy fields and is the rhythmic melodic choreograph of the dance. It has nothing to do with the Tagalog tinik or thorn although the choreograph appears to be that of a person whose foot was pricked by thorn and walked in pained gait, but sans the tikling’s agility and grace. Could any non-Waray-speaking talent have written or understood these:

An ini nga sayaw an ngaran Tinikling/na sinasabayan hin barubakingking/Kingking man han tuo, kingking man han wala/lukso hin duruyog nga waray sumikil/Ang duha nga kahoy nga guin-iru-igtok/nga dinuruyogan hin pagbarubandok… (This dance is called Tinikling/characterized by agile footing/right foot hops/left foot hops/altogether traipsing but tripping not… Two poles are together bumped (against each other)/and rhythmically stomped aground…)

Andres Cristobal Cruz, in the Isyu daily newsmagazine of June 6, 1998, wrote that Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit was purloined original Kasadya Ning Taknaa. "...Mang Levi acknowledged that the real author of Matud Nila was composer Vicente Rubi. Kaya lang, Mang Levi teased, nauna nang nagparinig si Vicente kay San Pedro. Tinanggap naman siya dahil sa Matud Nila." There’s a merry mix-up here. Either Celerio or Cruz was mixed up because Matud Nila â€" another popular Cebuano song composed by Ben Zubiri, that has infiltrated Manila’s melodious air â€" was not the subject of the interview but about Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit. Has Matud Nila been purloined, too?

Perhaps, we might examine the archives. Many of the beautiful compositions of the late Justice Norberto Romualdez, Luminado Lucente of Leyte and those of the famous composers in the south, the north and the Bicol region might have strayed into some composers’ one thousand and one works.

Nothing here diminishes my high esteem for Mang Levi. I only react contemplating Rotary’s "Four-Way Test of things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it create goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"

May Noy Inteng Rubi’s, Noy Marianing Vestil’s (whom I met during my Cebu newspaparing days) and Mang Levi’s souls rest in peace.

Sunanoy - Classical Music

According to Dr. Jes Tirol, Cebuano classical music is called "sunanoy". This category of Cebuano music can neither be found in Google Search nor in Yahoo Search. among the songs that fall in this category are Sa Kabukiran, words and music by Manuel Velez, Luha sa Kaalipay also by Velez, and Balud and Kahibulungan by Alfon.

The song Sa Kabukiran, Cebuano lyrics and music by Manuel Velez. Later popularized by Sylvia La Torre with Tagalog lyrics by Levi Celerio. Manuel Velez is not given songwriting credit. In other words, the work of Velez has been hijacked and plagiarized.

Kundiman

The Kundiman is a lyrical song made popular in the Philippines in the early 19th century, but having origins in older pre-colonial indigenous styles. Composed in the Western idiom, the song is characterized by a minor key at the beginning and shifts to a major key in the second half. Its lyrics depict a romantic love, usually portraying the forlorn pleadings of a lover willing to sacrifice everything on behalf of his beloved. In many others, it is a plaintive call of the rejected lover or the broken-hearted. In others, it is a story of unrequited love. Almost all traditional Filipino love songs in this genre are heavy with poetic emotion. One such Kundiman that tells about unrequited love is the Visayan song Matud Nila. (Yahoo Search: piknowledge.com - culture), music and lyrics by Ben Zubiri. Dr. Jes Tirol says classical Visayan love songs are kundimans.

We have a Bohol Investment and Promotion Center. It is headed by Development Communication graduate. I don't know if there is an investment specialist among its staff.  By the way, the Philippine Ports Authority and Cong. Edgar M. Chatto have announced that the Catagbacan port in Loon will be transformed into the country's first international cruise ship port.  Since such kind of port does not host cruise ships on a daily or even monthly basis, it should accommodate routes that are not served by other Bohol ports, like Ormoc-Bohol, Masbate-Bohol, etc.

Inimbento ra man gud nang Sandugo as a festival. Daghan na nga mga lungsod ang nakadaug sa Sandugo, pero nagpabilin pa gihapon nga ang Loboc, Loon ug Dimiao (and lately Alicia solely for their Musika Kawayan) ang the three most culturally active, even without funded projects on heritage, culture and the arts. This is according to the Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD).

Usa pa, kulang pa ang atong agricultral production even for local consumption tungod kay mitaas ang local demand due mainly to tourism. I do not see an agriculturally competitive and exporting Bohol in the next three years.

Naturally, the number of boat trips will drastically reduce. Presently there are 19 departures for Cebu everyday from 6:25am to 12mn; and 16 departures from Cebu to Tubigon.  Other ports are those in Tagbilaran, Loon, Clarin, Buenavista, Getafe, Ubay, Talibon and Jagna. Think about the porters, pusu-barbecue vendors, tricycle or trisikad drivers,  jeepney drivers, pasalubong vendors, etc. During the operation phase, toll gate personnel na lang juy ma employ ana.  I heard nagpinalitay na og yuta sa proposed approach of the bridge in Getafe; mostly by dummies of one or very few influential persons.  That should spell millions once the government buys these lots from them.

Danao - Bohol / Re: Danao Extreme Adventures

Taking Bohol to the extreme
By Nathalie M. Tomada
Starweek Magazine (Philippine Star) August 02, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - It’s a thrill seeker’s dream getaway. Danao used to be one of the lesser-known and least-visited areas in Bohol. Now, with its eco-adventure tourism park, Danao should be on its way to becoming one of the best-selling attractions of the island-province and, perhaps, in the whole of Central Visayas.

Branded as E.A.T. Danao (Eco-Extreme-Educational Adventure Tour Danao), the Danao Adventure Park â€" located 72 kilometers away from the provincial capital of Tagbilaran â€" features a wide selection of activities for guests either looking for a smooth initiation into adventure tourism or a wild adrenalin rush.
During a recent familiarization tour courtesy of the Department of Tourism, I would have preferred to take things slow, going for activities classified under “leisure travel” â€" bird-watching, caving, organic farm visit, kayaking, rice field walk, village tour, among others. But if you have the DOT secretary Ace Durano as the leader of the pack, playing eager tourist to the hilt and seizing each extreme adventure opportunity presented, the invitation for some high-energy action is just too hard to ignore.

Being a newcomer to this whole extreme adventure thing, I was reassured by the staff â€" who trained for months on how to ensure the safety and security of guests â€" that there’s a matching activity for every level of risk tolerance.

So first off, I joined a group of six who sampled the sky ride. It had us comfortably ensconced in a cable car that took us â€" leisurely â€" across two verdant hills and the flowing waters of the Wahig-Inabanga River.

Then, the challenge to traverse the same direction â€" this time, gliding through the 1.5 kilometer-long cable wire in acceleration (think Superman!) â€" beckoned. If it’s any consolation, you’re given the choice of going solo or in tandem. As for me, I decided on sharing my first time with a more anxious friend.

After some vacillation, we finally mustered up the guts to pull off this “stunt,” thanks to some elderly locals who egged us on â€" perhaps shamed us might be more accurate â€" in the vernacular, “Kaya na ninyo! Nakaya gani namo! (You can do it! Even we did it!).”

So off we went, committing “suislide”… and survived to tell the tale. There’s no other adjective to describe it but “breathtaking,” and I’m referring to both the high-speed ride and the stunning sights below (make that way, way below.)

Apart from the suislide or zip line, other heart-pumping activities include river trekking, river tubing, root climbing, rappelling, bouldering, and the plunge. The latter is a canyon swing facility that will drop a harness-strapped “you” 30 meters down before getting swayed like a pendulum this way and that. For those hankering for an advanced state of exhilaration, fret not: the park will soon introduce bungee-jumping. Thank goodness it was not yet ready when we were there.

There are also cottages and tents for rent because as it is, a day is not enough to enjoy all of the activities.
More than just experiential, E.A.T Danao also incorporates the educational, as guides will teach you about the surroundings and the communities that inhabit them â€" from watersheds, forest preservation, to history. Danao, after all, is the hometown of the Bol-anon hero Francisco Dagohoy, who launched the country’s longest revolt against the Spaniards.

Danao townsfolk used to depend on agriculture as the main source of livelihood. Now, the municipality is getting a boost from the tourism revenues.

According to Danao Mayor Tom Gonzaga, after investing P25 million in the 60-hectare property situated in the mountainous area of Magtangtang, Danao, the adventure park â€" co-managed by the LGU and different people’s organizations â€" has been earning P1 million a month since January. The bulk of that income stems from domestic tourism. “We have not earned and seen this much money before,” Mayor Gonzaga happily noted.

It has also generated employment for more than 50 locals, and probably more, as the eco-lodges and campsite are completed.

Sec. Durano said that if there’s one good lesson to glean from the example set by Danao, it is that a successful tourism project can emerge from local stimuli. “There’s high exponential success rate if a project is initiated by an LGU.”

DOT, according to Durano, only gave P200,000 to Danao and trained the local guides. “We know a project is successful when we are no longer needed,” Durano said.

Danao, on the other hand, tapped the World Bank for funding, at the same time received assistance from the provincial government, among others. Durano said, “With the right leadership, development planning, and implementation, a local government unit will be able to attract funding and create new sources of income for its people.”

The presence of the adventure tourism park also goes to show that Bohol isn’t running out of ideas on how to pep up conventional travel itineraries to this destination. Bohol is not just about the Chocolate Hills, the Loboc River, or the Panglao beaches.

But who would have thought such a remote municipality would make it to the must-see list?
According to Bohol Rep. Edgar Chatto, “The Danao I remember was a sleepy town. Nobody really visited this place. But the adventure park will radically change the identity of Danao. This will not only promote Danao but also Bohol.”

The tourism chief, who particularly noted that Danao was not even within the radar of DOT before, added, “Danao is a 4th class municipality with first-class leadership and a first-class tourism experience.”
Danao Adventure Park is a fitting venture because adventure tourism is an increasingly patronized global offering. Durano said that nature-based and environment-sensitive activities are more in demand now among foreign travelers.

He encouraged LGUs to cater to this concept, just like what Danao did. “Eco-adventure tourism is our niche, given the natural and cultural assets of our country. Let’s not try to be what we are not.”
