Former sumo wrestler Konishiki has met his match.
Love cannot be dictated by cholesterol.

He and Chie Iijima, a 26-year-old medical clinic worker, announced their engagement at a press conference in Tokyo.

Hawaiian-born Konishiki, 38, the first foreign-born wrestler to reach sumo's second-highest rank of ozeki, retired from the sport in 1997 and since then has become a successful TV entertainer.

Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Incorporated-Tagbilaran Branch, has long been a landmark in Tagbilaran City. Despite the sprouting of several edifices, a very positive sign of economic progress, the Coca-Cola building continue to catch attention. Even its regular siren has become a staple time update for all local inhabitants.

Through the years, the Coca-Coal plant has undergone many changes. There was a time when it bottled San Miguel Beer. With the influx of time came the variation of Managers, all of them guided by the tenets of good management. But even if the same guidelines are observed, leadership varies with the personality of the one at the helm.

Being involved with a lot of projects as a professional and an organization man, I have known the local Managers of Coca-Cola sine 1970. All these years the beverage company has been at the forefront in its benevolence and philanthropy.

Big events in Tagbilaran City and Bohol Province, whether public or private, always have Coca-Cola as a sponsor or benefactor. It has lived up to its name as an epitome of generosity up to this day.

Last Friday, February 7, for instance, Coca-Cola treated the members of BTMA (Bohol Tri-Media Association) to a very informative guided tour and sumptuous lunch, prior to the opening of a Bowling Tournament, which is also sponsored by the firm. Its efforts to be environment friendly is highly manifested by the facilities it has, including a water-treatment plant right inside the compound. We also learned that the Company spends P200, 000 every month just to haul and transport its waste water (clearly processed and safe) to a neared site in Barangay Taloto. The local plant is unionized; and labor and management relation is at its best. Being a multi-national company has always a distinct advantage.

Starting last year, Coca-Cola ceased being a sister Company of San Miguel Corporation. Coca-Cola Philippines is now directly linked to its main international headquarters in Atlanta City, Georgia. With the change in top Management came a number of changes. Physically, the local Plant looks and smells better than in the previous year. Renovations have rendered the offices rooms and lobby very comfortable. Even the lane leading to the production area is completely renovated, and every nook and cranny in the buildings are well-lighted and immaculately clean.

With the tremendous changes came a new Operations Manager, Mr. Luisito Pepito Ytol (LPY), an Electrical Engineer who finished his course at the University of Bohol. Approachable and accommodating, lighthearted as a next-door brother, Louise creates a good impression at first meeting. This interview took place inside his office, before lunch and a short getting-to-know you program which followed.

LMP: Can you tell us the difference between the management of Coca-Cola then and now?
LPY: Before, Sir, Coca-Cola was managed by San Miguel Corporation. Those years, medyo lisod ang atong ekonomiya and the company was still starting to grow. Daghan kaayo ta ug gihimo nga cost reduction programs; and we survived the competition. We all know nga daghan gyud ug ka-kompetensya ang soft drink industry.

LMP: Kinsa na ang nag-manage sa company now that it is separated from San Miguel Corp.?
LPY: 70 percent of the company's share to Coca-Cola which used to be with SMC is now owned back by the Atlanta Head Office.

The leaders here in the Philippines can decide, but when it comes to team decisions, they have to refer it to the main office.

LMP: What are the changes now because of the shift of management?
LPY: As a company, we have to make cost reduction in order to meet our standards. In doing so, ma-apektohan ang among mga existing projects like the repair of equipment and building. It affects also our operations. The good part is daghan ang mga na-promote.

LMP: I am speaking for the company I am working with, the Alturas Group of Companies. There was a time nga ang inyong promotions nausab. Coca- Cola used to be the major sponsor of the Alturas Drum and Bugle Showdown.
LPY: Coca Cola Atlanta took over February of last year. Negotiations can be made again for a win-win situation.

LPY: In some functions, there were changes like our legislation in terms of distribution. Aside from that, the same lang gihapon ang uban.

LMP: How about compensation?
LPY: The same thing every year, may increase. We pay higher than the minimum wage.

LMP: Talking about your hiring process, naa ma moy HRD… What is the practice of the company as far as recruitment is concerned?
LPY: We advertised during our latest hiring. But right now, in our system, kon mo-advertise man gani, inside the plant lang. If the employees are qualified for the position, pwede sila mo-apply.

LMP: Nakamatikod man gud ko sa una, most of the people sa planta kon mo-retire na, moingon nga akong anak ang ipuli. Is it still present?
LPY: Wala na na karon. But honestly, that system has an edge man pod. If somebody inside gets the position, we are confident that performance is good.

LMP: Let's go to the operations. How many departments do you have in the company?
LPY: We have the HR, Finance, the Sales, Supply Chain which is composed of manufacturing, operation, and sales, which is in-charge of distributing the goods from the other plants in Manila and Cebu.

LMP: With the change in management, how does it affect the profit? Is it higher or na-retain lang?
LPY: Actually, right now dili pa gyud taas kaayo but fortunately, misaka ang atong sales because of the markets' support.

LMP: We saw ganina kadtong water treatment facilities, what good has it done as far as Coca Cola operations is concerned?
LPY: Actually in terms of savings or income, equal ra. Coca-Cola is a responsible company in that we are into the conservation of the environment. We are meeting all the standards of the DENR which is also equivalent to the standards of the company.

LMP: Let's talk about your products now. Aside from Coke, do you still have other drinks?
LPY: Mineral waters like Viva and Wilkins. Sa soft drinks, we have Coke, Sprite, Royal Tru Orange, Lift lemon, Jazz and Sparkle, Pop Cola and Sarsi.

LMP: Let's talk about competition. Your competitor Pepsi-Cola came out with a sugarless brand, Max. You, on the other hand, came out with Coca-Cola Zero. Was this an answer to the challenge given by the other side?
LPY: Consumers nowadays are becoming conscious about their health. That's why we don't create a brand just to kill the competitors' brand. We also have to align with the needs of the customers.

LMP: Are you fulfilled with what you have right now?
LPY: Yes. I could say that I'm successful and fruitful. Though the job requires a lot of pressure, it is very fulfilling.

LMP: Unsa ang imung mahimo as far as the company is concerned?
LPY: I only have big plans for the company nga nagbutang nako kon asa nako karon. There may be some other time I can exhaustively elaborate on them. But as of now my loyalty to Coca-Cola is one-hundred percent.

That Tagbilaran City is at par with the fastest developing cities in the country, is discernable through its infrastructure upsurge. Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. is in the frontline in this endeavor that is basically an initiative of the private sector, motivated by a public governance that believes in the synergy concept of progress.

Development should be multi-faceted. It is for this reason that other concerns have to addressed; like health, and personal well-being. Along this line, the local Coca-Cola administration has sponsored the annual BTMA Sportsfest, now on its second year. Engr. Louise P. Ytol is totally aware of this need for which reason he has this regular sportfests in his agenda. Even among his personnel and staff, regular sports activities are lined-up or a part of the health-care of his employees.

Pacquiao won in his first encounter with Marquez. The judges had admitted errors in their decision.

It is true that Marquez landed more punches than Pacquiao did, but boxing decisions are based on how many times you won in a given round.

Quality over quantity. Marquez, despite his strong punches, failed to knock Pacquiao down. What is 1,000 punches if these can't kill a mosquito? I would settle for one slap to silence a mosquito.

Binibining Pilipinas video posted in YouTube has so far received 13,000 plus comments, most of which are plain sarcastic and rude.

The comments come from Filipinos themselves.

The Bb Pilipinas video is now one of the most-commented videos in YouTube History. YouTube has over a billion videos, and is the most-visited website in the world today. YouTube (owned by Google Inc) has dethroned Yahoo and Google in the ranking.

Here's the difference: If you made a mistake in a beauty pageant in the 1960s, the boy next door will not know it. But if you committed a stage blunder today, the whole world will immediately know it.

The Internet can never be underestimated.

Next week, the rude comments could go up to 20,000 and it seems that there is no end of the shame and insult slapped on our country, not on the girl herself. Unless YouTube removes the video, the image of the Philippines will always be ridiculed worldwide.

Whatever people (Filipinos and foreign nationals) say about "My family is the best persons", it is the whole country, from Aparri to Jolo, that is being humiliated.

Breast cancer patients who are overweight have more aggressive disease and are likely to die sooner, U.S. researchers reported on Friday.

A dangerous type of breast cancer, known as inflammatory breast cancer, was seen in 45 percent of obese patients, compared with 30 percent of overweight patients and 15 percent of patients of healthy weight.

"The more obese a patient is, the more aggressive the disease," said Dr. Massimo Cristofanilli of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, who led the study.

"We are learning that the fat tissue may increase inflammation that leads to more aggressive disease."

Can-Care Caregiver Training and Development Center has denied any involvement with an illegal recruiter who swindled three of its students by almost P2-million with the promise of employment abroad.

Beautilde Tinio, the administrator of Can-Care, through lawyer Lord Marapao IV issued a statement yesterday that linking the school to swindling suspect Marissa Flores Theiss is creating "baseless and malicious conclusions" that "cast doubt and aspersions" on Can-Care.

In an interview with the Chronicle yesterday, Tinio stressed the school does not allow recruitment activities with their students.

Tinio said that the school administration will fully cooperate with any investigation undertaken by proper authorities to apprehend Thiess.

Three students, one of whom just recently graduated, were promised employment by Theiss in Canada provided they advance her money for their visa and placement.

Theiss, who also enrolled at Can-Care, claimed that her husband is a Canadian and could help them process their application for work.

The management of Coco-cola Bottlers Philippines Incorporated (CCBPI) this city has issued clarification last Friday on environmental concerns like flooding in its vicinity along CPG north avenue and dumping of waste water in Taloto district.

In a short program turned into an instant press conference during the opening of bowling tournament of the Bohol Tri-media Association (BTMA), plant manger Louie Itol said that it's not the fault of the soft drink company when overflowing of water from drainage occurred during rainy days.

The company said that its "tank" aimed for treated waste water deposit can be filled by runoff water during rainy season.

This scenario is aggravated for the fact that the drainage system along San Jose street that connects the same (drainage system) built by Hanjin company along CPG avenue has not been finished.

It was learned that the stretch from CCBPI to corner Peñaflor Street is low-lying, and water overflows when rain comes.

Talk of the Town / Corruption in Bohol Coop Fund?
March 17, 2008, 12:16:19 AM
By the Bohol Chronicle

Some officials of the Bohol Poverty Reduction Management Office (BPRMO) are in hot water after the Commission on Audit (COA) found discrepancies in the utilization of a P2-million financial assistance given to a local federation of cooperatives.

Pedro Paumig, Jr., audit team leader declared that per findings uncovered, P396,398.65 was unaccounted, aside from the alleged misuse of funds and cash advances derived from the P2 million fund assistance released by the office of the governor and a capital build-up of P325,200 contributed by the 20 members of the federation.

The financial assistance of P2 million was released in full on April 11, 2005, instead of tranches contrary to the above regulation, according to the COA report. The fund support was intended to the Federation of BPRMO Agricultural Cooperatives for Eastern Bohol.

When asked to comment, Antonieto "Boy" I. Pernia, BPRMO chief told the Chronicle the P2 million fund assistance was released in April 2005 when he was not yet connected with the BPRMO." He assumed as BPRMO chief in March 2006.

"We discovered the irregularity only when I called COA to audit the P200,000 fund intended for training, while saying that any attempt to link me to the anomaly will never prosper," he stressed.

It was the kind of intense, back-and-forth championship-level battle where a strong case could be made for either fighter winning but what turned out to be the difference in tonight’s official verdict was a third-round knockdown scored by the Filipino icon. Without that 10-8 round that Pacquiao was awarded on all three official scorecards, judge Miller would have scored the bout 113-113, and the fighters and fans would have been stuck with another split-draw, the verdict of their first encounter.

Don’t expect a third encounter. When Pacquiao was asked about the possibility of adding another 12 rounds to the legendary 24 they’ve fought, the four-division champ replied: “I don’t think so, this business is over.”

A Glimpse of the Memorable Marquez Knock-out
#13337
By Tina Santos, Alcuin Papa, Arlyn dela Cruz
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim on Saturday said he would not lift a finger to help his son who was arrested in a drug buy-bust operation late Friday in Manila.

He said he would not even send a lawyer to his son, Manny Santos Lim, 44, a businessman, who was arrested with two others in Sta. Cruz, Manila. They were found with 100 grams of shabu, or metamphetamine hydrochloride, worth P600,000.

“If he violated the law, let the axe fall where it may. I only help those who are victims of injustice. That’s what I have been fighting for. The law applies to all, that’s my philosophy in life,” Lim said in a phone interview.

“He’s 44 years old, he should be ready to face the consequences of his actions. Let him suffer for his actions,” said the father who admitted that he and his son had not been on speaking terms for some months.

He (Manny) floored Marquez and if it weren't for the bell, the fight would have been over.  2. In the later rounds Marquez ate "fist soup" from Pacquiao and wobbled REAL bad, he somehow gained composure and finished that round and 3. Who do you think the boxing powers are backing?

Marquez should remember that he was knocked down on the third round.
#13346
By Francis Ochoa
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Michael Buffer was still halfway through announcing the final judge's score when suddenly, the crowd erupted in a huge roar.

The popular announcer was then saying "new."

In case you didn't catch it, Buffer said: "The new super featherweight champion of the world!"

He was, of course, referring to Manny Pacquiao.

The Filipino ring sensation finally won a world championship, becoming the first Asian to win world titles in three different weight classes after outpointing Juan Manuel Marquez on the way to claiming the Mexican's belt in Las Vegas.

Four years ago, Pacquiao failed to grab Marquez's featherweight belts despite knocking the Mexican thrice in the first round.

Marquez fought back to force a controversial draw, setting this long-awaited rematch dubbed "Unfinished Business."

And by the end of this bout, Pacquiao finally tied up all the loose ends.

"Our business is finished," the Gen. Santos City native told a television reporter.

Mexicans booed Manny Pacquiao at Press Conference

by Ciaran Baynes

Manny Pacquiao won a controversial split decision over Juan Marquel Marquez to take the WBC super featherweight title after an absorbing 12-round bout, shown live on Setanta Sports.

Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs) won two cards 115-112 and 114-113, while Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KOs) took the other 115-112 at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas.

After the first fight that many felt Marquez edged despite being awarded a draw this decision seems harsh on the Mexican fighter.

It gives Pacquiao a triumvirate of victories over future hall of fame Mexican fighters after he previously beat the legendary Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Marquez largely controlled the first two rounds with his superb boxing, but the third round saw Pacquiao land his big shots and put Marquez on the canvas with a picture perfect left hook. He could have been awarded a second knockdown as Marquez was rocked and made to sit on the ropes in the closing stages of the round though in typical style from there he came back with a big shot of his own.

The Best Pacquiao Marquez 2 Preview Ever
#13352
By the Associated Press and Los Angeles Times

Manny Pacquiao's rematch victory over Juan Manuel Marquez was worth every minute of the four-year wait.

Pacquiao won a narrow split decision to claim Marquez's WBC 130-pound title tonight in a sensational fight that left two of the world's best boxers bloody and triumphant.

Though Marquez landed more punches at a higher percentage, Pacquiao (46-3-2) knocked down Marquez (48-4-1) in the third round and persevered through a nasty cut. Marquez also was cut in the fight, but neither backed down from one scintillating exchange after another.

Their first matchup ended in a draw in May 2004. Marquez was knocked down three times in the opening round of that acclaimed bout, but improbably rallied to win most of the later rounds in a possible career-saving performance.

“I am not Jocjoc Bolante. Media should be purveyors of truth and not entertain such ridiculous reports.”

This was the reaction of Bohol Poverty Reduction Management Office head Antonietto Pernia following reports leaked to the media this week that Pernia is taking flight to another country.

In a telephone interview, BPRMO chief Pernia denied he is running away and will be taking refuge in another country over the issue.

For a week, Pernia was out of Bohol and media was hounding him for his comment on the issues involving the BPRMO office.

Records at Capitol revealed he is on Special Leave (SPL). He was designated by Gov. Erico B. Aumentado to speak in his behalf in an affair at AFP Commissioned Officer County, Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City. From there, he flew to Davao for another appointment with a group involved in cooperative development.

“I will also be out of the country for three weeks upon invitation by the Canadian government through the Canadian Integrated Service (CIS) as trainer and resource person. It is an all-expense paid trip courtesy of the Canadian government and I am not spending my own money for this.”

“Definitely, I would not take flight to evade the investigations. I was actually the one asking the Commission on Audit to have BPRMO investigated. All issues involved will be answered soon, “ Pernia clarified.

A Commission on Audit report declared illegal all deductions made by Pernia’s office from financial assistance given to cooperatives. The amount was pegged at P344,000 for 2007 alone and COA has ordered for its return and to deposit the same amount at the Provincial Treasurer’s office.

Tagbilaran City - Bohol / Botika sa Katawhan is Back
March 15, 2008, 07:57:47 PM
By the Bohol Standard

The rally that brought some old and limping senior-citizens beneficiaries of the free medicine project to the street, led to the pronouncement of City Mayor Dan Lim for its reopening.

In his regular Saturday radio program, Mayor Lim said he was touched at the sight of the Botika sa Katawhan beneficiaries and this will make its opening sooner on March 11.

Kagawad Edi Borja, committee chairman on health, also sung on air his modified version of “Mibalik Ako” dedicated to Botika founder Mariano Uy.

The city mayor offered a recording opportunity for Borja after his touching song.

Mr. Uy also confirmed on the same radio program reopening of Botika on Tuesday with a new name “Libreng Tambal ni Dan.”

An estimated one thousand crowd gathered at the side of the unfinished Agora market building Friday afternoon with a short program culminating with speeches from beneficiaries, including barangay chairmen.

Some of the participants were bringing placards urging the City Mayor to reopen and continue the project. Others have placards particularly condemning two kagawads; Zenaido Rama and Edgar Kapirig as cause of the Botika closure.

In another forum, the provincial administration once again impressed the Armed Forces hierarchy with the innovative strategies in addressing insurgency through poverty reduction and development programs.

This was after Antonieto Pernia, head of the Provincial Government Media Affairs (PGMA) office and the Bohol Poverty Reduction and Management Office (BPRMO) of the Governor’s office, presented the speech of Governor Erico B. Aumentado on Day 1 of the three-day workshop held on March 4-6 in preparation for the turn-over of cleared areas to PNP by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

AFP will be handing over cleared areas to PNP in view of the relative success of the counter-insurgency program, specifically in dismantling of Communist terrorist movement guerilla fronts and clearing rebel-affected barangays, according to Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon in his invitation letter to Aumentado sent prior to the activity.

Last Wednesday one Boholano seaman went to the Lord instantly while three other Filipino crew members are missing from their vessel M.V. Gold leader, after a three ship collision that took place in the Akashi Strait in Japan’s inland sea, a coast guard official said.

The ship that Alexander Mercader was working on collided with both another vessel and a tanker.

The 1466-ton Belizean cargo ship sank with nine Filipino on board.

The name of the fatal crew member is Alexander C. Mercader 33 years and old single and born to loving parents Villardo and Justina Mercadar from Booy district this city of Tagbilaran.

His dad works with the city health department of Tagbilaran and his mom is a stay at home wife as explained by his father Villardo.

His parents were at Congressman Edgar Chatto’s house yesterday seeking assistance to have their son’s body brought back straight to their residence after it arrives here on this coming Thursday March 14th 2008.

In a special interview with the Standard yesterday after Mercaders’ had spoken with Congressman Chatto they said at first they had though of it as foul play because their son was one out of nine who was dead.

His father said that this was his sons’ third ship after his graduation at PMI College as a deck department graduate.

The agency where their son was employed had called to the residence of Mercader and relayed what Villardo said was sad news.

Villardo also said to the Standard that out of all his children his son was very honest, respectful and was helping his younger siblings with paying for their schooling.

The last time Villardo had had any contact with his son was the Monday three days before he was killed and in that conversation he told his parents to prepare three pigs for his homecoming at the end of March and for a possible wedding that was suppose to be.

On the day of the accident two good kids’ things had happened while the one sad incident of their son had taken place Villardo said with peace of mind in his voice that the day he received the phone call from the crewing agency in Manila one son was suppose to go to Qatar to begin work and the other daughter had just passed her nurses review.

Villardo says his son was always apprehensive being out on the sea working on a ship after the 911 attacks in New York city because at that same time U.S. helicopters had flown down onto his first commissioned vessel and immediately pointed guns at the crew inspecting the vessel for any terrorist activity on board.

Dear Belle,

Building a tower doesn't take place overnight.

This tower is our friendship. This tower is your friendship with all of us here, your soulmates.

This tower is you. And we are all your rooms in your tower.

I once read a parable when I was a little boy and the parable had this ending:

"Don't burn your house just to get rid of a rat." I always tell this lesson to Shobel, my beloved.

Whenever we are on a brink of break-up in the middle of simple misunderstanding, I often remind her this line: "My dear, don't burn your house just to get rid of a rat."

Belle, don't leave this tower just because you see a small crack.

I love you,

Mike

Showbiz & Celebrity / Richard Gere Wanted
March 14, 2008, 10:57:00 PM
India's top court suspended an arrest warrant Friday against Hollywood star Richard Gere, wanted for allegedly breaking public obscenity laws by kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty at a public AIDS awareness event last year, an attorney said.

"Gere is allowed to come and leave. He can't be arrested," said Anil Grover, an attorney for Shetty, after attending the Supreme Court proceedings.

Chief Justice K. G. Balakrishnan and Justice R. V. Raveendran indefinitely stayed the arrest warrant issued against Gere last year by a court in the northwestern Indian city of Jaipur, Grover told The Associated Press.

Gere embraced and kissed Shetty on her cheek at the public AIDS awareness event in New Delhi on April 15 last year, prompting Hindu hard-liners to allege the pair had offended the sensibilities of India's traditionally conservative culture.

A candidate was dropped from the Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) beauty pageant a week before the coronation night because of a previous job that organizers deemed indecent.

The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) said 22-year-old Andrea Dimalanta was disqualified "for her nondisclosure of her former employment in an adult entertainment lounge and a photo of her in her ‘working clothes’."

BPCI representatives who met Wednesday evening with the fourth runner-up in the 2006 Miss Mandaluyong contest reportedly told her she engaged in "indecent work" after a background check found that she had been a waitress in a sports bar.

But Dimalanta said what the BPCI did "was foul and they don’t have any legal basis to drop me from the list." She was not among the candidates presented to the media at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza on Thursday.

In a phone interview, Dimalanta said: "“They asked me if I was familiar with Toyz 4 D Boyz Lounge and Café. They said they found out I worked there as a GRO [guest relations officer], I danced there and I went out with customers. They also told me they had four witnesses who were willing to give affidavits.”

My people perish due to lack of knowledge.”
