4. Nay more; for is it not so that even for open wickednesses, not to punish but to perpetrate them, men put up with many most grievous troubles? Do not authors of secular letters tell of a certain right noble parricide of his country, that hunger, thirst, cold, all these he was able to endure, and his body was patient of lack of food and warmth and sleep to a degree surpassing belief? Why speak of highway robbers, all of whom while they lie in wait for travellers endure whole nights without sleep, and that they may catch, as they pass by, men who have no thought of harm, will, no matter how foul the weather, plant in one spot their mind and body, which are full of thoughts of harm? Nay it is said that some of them are wont to torture one another by turns, to that degree that this practice and training against pains is not a whit short of pains. For, not so much perchance are they excruciated by the Judge, that through smart of pain the truth may be got at, as they are by their own comrades, that through patience of pain truth may not be betrayed. And yet in all these the patience is rather to be wondered at than praised: nay neither wondered at nor praised, seeing it is no patience; but we must wonder at the hardness, deny the patience: for there is nothing in this rightly to be praised, nothing usefully to be imitated; and you will rightly judge the mind to be all the more worthy of greater punishment, the more it yields up to vices the instruments of virtues. Patience is companion of wisdom, not handmaid of concupiscence: patience is the friend of a good conscience, not the foe of innocence.

3. Look we then, beloved, what hardships in labors and sorrows men endure, for things which they viciously love, and by how much they think to be made by them more happy, by so much more unhappily covet. How much for false riches, how much for vain honors, how much for affections of games and shows, is of exceeding peril and trouble most patiently borne! We see men hankering after money, glory, lasciviousness, how, that they may arrive at their desires, and having gotten not lose them, they endure sun, rain, icy cold, waves, and most stormy tempests, the roughnesses and uncertainties of wars, the strokes of huge blows, and dreadful wounds, not of inevitable necessity but of culpable will. But these madnesses are thought, in a manner, permitted. Thus avarice, ambition, luxury, and the delights of all sorts of games and shows, unless for them some wicked deed be committed or outrage which is prohibited by human laws, are accounted to pertain to innocence: nay moreover, the man who without wrong to any shall, whether for getting or increasing of money, whether for obtaining or keeping of honors, whether in contending in the match, or in hunting, or in exhibiting with applause some theatrical spectacle, have borne great labors and pains, it is not enough that through popular vanity he is checked by no reproofs, but he is moreover extolled with praises: "Because," as it is written, "the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul." For the force of desires makes endurance of labors and pains: and no man save for that which he enjoys, freely takes on him to bear that which annoys. But these lusts, as I said, for the fulfilling of which they which are on fire with them most patiently endure much hardship and bitterness, are accounted to be permitted, and allowed by laws.

2. The patience of man, which is right and laudable and worthy of the name of virtue, is understood to be that by which we tolerate evil things with an even mind, that we may not with a mind uneven desert good things, through which we may arrive at better. Wherefore the impatient, while they will not suffer ills, effect not a deliverance from ills, but only the suffering of heavier ills. Whereas the patient who choose rather by not committing to bear, than by not bearing to commit, evil, both make lighter what through patience they suffer, and also escape worse ills in which through impatience they would be sunk. But those good things which are great and eternal they lose not, while to the evils which be temporal and brief they yield not: because "the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared," as the Apostle says, "with the future glory that shall be revealed in us." And again he says, "This our temporal and light tribulation does in inconceivable manner work for us an eternal weight of glory."

1. That virtue of the mind which is called Patience, is so great a gift of God, that even in Him who bestows the same upon us, that, whereby He waits for evil men that they may amend, is set forth by the name of Patience, [or long-suffering.] So, although in God there can be no suffering, and "patience" has its name a patiendo, from suffering, yet a patient God we not only faithfully believe, but also wholesomely confess. But the patience of God, of what kind and how great it is, His, Whom we say to be impassible, yet not impatient, nay even most patient, in words to unfold this who can be able? Ineffable is therefore that patience, as is His jealousy, as His wrath, and whatever there is like to these. For if we conceive of these as they be in us, in Him are there none. We, namely, can feel none of these without molestation: but be it far from us to surmise that the impassible nature of God is liable to any molestation. But like as He is jealous without any darkening of spirit, angry without any perturbation, pitiful without any pain, repents Him without any wrongness in Him to be set right; so is He patient without anything of passion. Now therefore as concerning human patience, which we are able to conceive and beholden to have, of what sort it is, I will, as God grants and the brevity of the present discourse allows, essay to set forth.

Patience is Non-violent

Whoa, this is a big one. Patience is non-violent and does no harm to any living sentient creature. What does that really mean? In a nutshell it means we do not perpetuate violence on man, woman, child, or animal. Think about it. If there was more patience in the world we would not being seeing those commercials for abused animals that make us all cry. I swear every time we see one of those commercials my 7 year old tears up.

As parents, we have daily opportunities to teach our children that patience is non-violent. I mean how many times a day do your kids ask you the same question? Do you discipline them with a smack? Most likely if you are here, you do not. We are teaching our children the non-violent aspect of patience eve time we interact with our children.

Resolve conflicts peacefully, without resorting to violence

When you teach your children to resolve conflicts peacefully you are teaching them to work through a problem in a way that does not hurt anyone involved. This means you teach children to resolve disagreements without hurting the other person. You are teaching your child compassion. To care for others, their feelings, to come to solution to a problem without hurting the other person. Think of the toddler that wants a toy and if he does not get it. What does he do? He hits the other kid, or worse yet bites them. How do we deal with a toddler that hits or bites? We teach them how to be gentle. Gentleness is part of patience.

What is Patience?

Patience is a virtue.  I am sure you have heard this expression before. What does being patient mean? Being Patient means being willing to wait. To delay getting something small in order to get something bigger in the end.  So what does that have to do with virtues? As a virtue patience is the counterpoint to the sin of wrath.  Being patient means you resolve conflicts peacefully, without resorting to violence. It means showing mercy and forgiveness to sinners.  Patience means not killing or being violent in any way to any thinking creature; to practice moderation of meat consumption. A patient person creates a  sense of peaceful stability and community, rather than engendering suffering, hostility and antagonism.

We all know the joys of teaching a child how to wait for ice cream, or a birthday, or Christmas. But how do you teach them to resolve conflicts in a non-violent manner? Or to show forgiveness and mercy to sinners? How do we as adults create a sense of peaceful stability in our homes?

As a mother and someone who works with kids I go through these lessons every day. Kids get into squabbles every day.
We begin teaching our children as always, through how we act. When you are on the phone with someone, let’s say the electric company, do you talk to them like human beings and empathize with their situation or do lose your patience and dehumanize the person on the other end of the phone? After all, is it their fault the storm took out your power? No they are probably being swamped with calls right now.

Mike, that's the reason why patients receiving organ donation are given prophylactic ANTIBIOTICS (usually: AMOXICILLIN, CEPHALOSPORIN, VANCOMYCIN, TRIMETHOPRIM SULFAMETHAXAZOLE) prior to surgery. In case of CMV, patients are also given a bolus of ANTI-VIRAL medication prophylactically (usually: GANGCYCLOVIR, ZIDOVUDINE, RIBAVIRIN).

The administration of prophylactic drugs significantly reduces the incidence of surgery-related bacterial and viral infection.

Isles, its commendable how you are sensitive for animals / animal rights. To admit, on my first day of taking Comparative Anatomy & Physiology in college, I was at first taken back to the smell of formaldehyde and the bodies of the cats, dogs, frogs, and fetal pigs we had to dissect. But, eventually, oddly enough, I got used to the setting. It became fun, and I would wake up an hour early (at 7 AM) just to prep up for my Anatomy & Physiology class (which started at 8:30 AM).

When I started medical school proper, my favorite class was Human Anatomy. The dissection and preparation of the human cadaver is quite interesting. One can literally see what's inside of man. And literally see what makes man "tick". he he he ! ;)

US Navy's 7th Fleet's Destroyer Battle Group steaming through South China Sea:

#13261
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said during a visit to Vietnam that the Asia-Pacific region is critical to "our national defense," while making clear Washington's intent to aid allies there and enforce maritime rights in the South China Sea -- which Beijing largely claims.

On a historic stop Sunday in Cam Ranh Bay, the strategic deep water port that was a U.S. base during the Vietnam War, Panetta could gaze out from the flight deck of the USNS Richard E. Byrd toward the sea and reflect on the significance of the harbor, which represents both a painful past for the American military and a challenging but hopeful future.

"The more I am out here, the more critical I view this region in terms of our national defense and the defense of the world," Panetta said in an interview with Fox News. "This is an area that is critical to the future security and prosperity of our country and the world.

"For that reason we need to be rightly focused on playing a bigger role here in the Asia Pacific," he said.

Panetta is the most senior U.S. official to go to Cam Ranh Bay since the Vietnam War ended. He told Fox News that the lessons learned from Vietnam play a "big role" in the decision he and President Obama make about current wars.

"The war does play a big role in terms of not only the lessons we learned from that war but I think also as a result of that war we probably have an even higher obligation to get involved in the healing process by improving our relationship with this country," he said.

With the South China Sea as a backdrop, he left no doubt that the U.S. will maintain a strong presence in the region and wants to help allies protect themselves and their maritime rights.

His visit, however, is likely to irritate Chinese leaders who are unhappy with any U.S. buildup in the region and view it as a possible threat.

Panetta, in remarks Saturday to a defense conference in Singapore, rejected such claims about the shift in U.S. military focus. But U.S. officials are wary of China's increased military buildup and expanding trade relations with other countries in the region.

"Access for United States naval ships into this facility is a key component of this relationship (with Vietnam) and we see a tremendous potential here for the future," he said.

Right now U.S. warships do not go into the harbor, but other Navy ships, such as the Byrd, do. The Byrd is a cargo ship operated by the Navy's Military Sealift Command; it has a largely civilian crew. It is used to move military supplies to U.S. forces around the world. Navy warships go to other Vietnam ports, such as Danang.

While Panetta suggested the U.S. may want to send more ships to Cam Ranh Bay in the future, he and other defense officials did not detail what requests he may make in meetings with Vietnamese leaders.

On Sunday, the port served more as a symbol of America's growing military relationship with Vietnam, underscoring Washington's desire to build partnerships in the region in part to counter China's escalating dominance.

For Panetta, who was in the military during the Vietnam era but did not serve in country, it was an emotional opportunity.

"For me personally this is a very moving moment," he told reporters, noting that on Memorial Day he was at the Vietnam memorial in Washington commemorating the 50th anniversary of the war.

"Today I stand on a U.S. ship here in Cam Ranh Bayh Bay to recognize the 17th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the United States and Vietnam," he said.

The relationship between the two nations has come a long way, he said, "We have a complicated relationship but we're not bound by that history."

The new U.S. strategy for the Asia-Pacific includes a broad plan to help countries learn to better defend themselves, and for that to happen "it is very important that we be able to protect key maritime rights for all nations in the South China Sea and elsewhere," Panetta said from the deck of the ship.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea as its own, setting up conflicts with other nations in the region, including Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and others who also have territorial claims there.

Panetta flew to Vietnam from a major defense conference in Singapore, where he met with leaders from allies all across the region. There he issued a strong call for Asian nations to set up a code of conduct, including rules governing maritime rights and navigation in the South China Sea, and then develop a forum where disputes can be settled.

At the same time he detailed plans to boost U.S. military presence in the region, including a modest increase in ships and more troops that would mainly rotate in and out. Defense officials said that by 2020 the U.S. Navy would add about eight ships to the Asia-Pacific region, and overall would have about 60 percent of the fleet assigned there.

Tensions between the U.S. and China reverberate across the region, and are often focused on America's support of the island of Taiwan, which China considers its own. Another key area of dispute is the South China Sea, which China claims almost entirely as its own. But Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines also have territorial claims there.

In addition, more recently the U.S. has been vocal in blaming China for cyberattacks that emanate from the country and steal critical data from U.S. government agencies and private American companies.

BEIJING â€" China said Monday a US decision to shift the bulk of its naval fleet to the Pacific by 2020 was "untimely" and called on Washington to respect its interests in the region.

The decision to deploy more ships to the Pacific Ocean and to expand defence partnerships in the region -- announced by Pentagon chief Leon Panetta Saturday -- reflects US concerns over China's rising economic and military might.

"All parties should make efforts to safeguard and promote peace, stability and development in the Asia Pacific," foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told reporters in response to a question on the US announcement.

"The practice of strengthening military deployment and alliances to give prominence to a military and security agenda is untimely."

In his speech to the Shangri-La Dialogue -- a major Asia security summit held in Singapore -- Panetta insisted the strategy was not a challenge to Beijing.

He said that "by 2020, the Navy will re-posture its forces from today's roughly 50/50 percent split between the Pacific and the Atlantic to about a 60/40 split between those oceans.

"That will include six aircraft carriers in this region, a majority of our cruisers, destroyers, littoral combat ships, and submarines."

The United States also plans to expand military exercises in the Pacific and to conduct more port visits over a wider area extending to the Indian Ocean.

"We welcome the United States to play a constructive role in the Asia Pacific region," Liu said.

He added Beijing hoped the "US side will respect the interests and concerns of all parties in the Asia Pacific, including China".

Beijing has been criticised for taking an increasingly assertive stance in the region -- particularly in the South China Sea which it claims almost entirely as its own, in conflict with other nearby countries.

At the summit, Japan's Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister of Defense Shu Watanabe also expressed concern over China's massive defence spending, saying the lack of transparency in the budget posed a "threat" to Tokyo.

China's military budget jumped 11.2 percent year on year to $106 billion in 2012, a rise that has caused unease around the region and especially in Tokyo.

Liu on Monday defended China's military spending, saying the nation's defence policy was transparent and added Beijing would not seek "hegemony when it is stronger".

Doesn't it sound better when Bisayas say, "Gusto ko ana, kani pod, ug kana! Dali!"  ;)
#13274
Plus, in my honest opinion, Tagalog is such an effeminate dialect. Bisaya is much more powerful sounding, very dominant and strong sounding.

I find it annoying when tagalog speakers say, "gusto ko yan, at chaka, yan, at chaka yan...." yak! Bajihon man ilang pronunciation.

Starting this June, DepEd will use Tagalog as medium of instruction in schools. Yes, teaching mathematics, science, english using Tagalog.

One teacher commented about this policy: "Palpak man kaayo ni nga balaod. They want us Bisaya to use Tagalog as medium of instruction to teach Science but the exams will be written in English."

That is truly double standard, Mike. How ridiculous. They are forcing students speak in Taglog , isn't it true that the majority of Filipinos are Bisaya?

Take at India for example. India is a multicultural republic composed of over 26 states, they have over 1.2 billion people with different ethnicities, and languages. Hindi is conisidered the national language, however, English is used as a medium to communicate as well. I have friends who are Indian MDs who don't speak Hindi to communicate with other Indian docs, but use english. The reason why is because some Indians come from the southern India where they speak Tamil, and some Indians come from the north where they speak punjab, rajasthani, which is similar to Hindi. Tamil-speakers of southern india cannot communicate with them in Hindi because tamil is a totally different language from Hindi. They comunicate with each other in english.

My friend, a Tamil-speaker, told me that the Tamil speakers prefer to use English than speak in Hindi. Pariho ra pod diay ilang situwasyon sa mga BISDAK. As there are BISDAKS who prefer to speak in ENGLISH to communicate with Tagalog-speakers.

If there are three certainties in being a Filipino it is the following:

1. The command of the English language
2. Good Hearted
3. Very Hard working

Tita Sol,

Impressed gayod ko sa Mitsubishi. I currently own a Mitsubishi Montero, very good bitaw ning ilang engine, and also their safety. You did a good job in buying Mitsubishi.

Nin tan-aw tan-aw ra lang ko. I have to look around for other SUVs, because na kulbaan ko sa presyo sa LAND ROVER LR4. The sales rep said that I can get a standard LR4 with base ammenities pero ang starting cost kono is $49,000. This does not take into consideration the sales tax and everything else. Sakitan ahong dughan og ahong pitaka just thinking about the cost!

Mo save up pa ko in order to buy this...he he he :)

Today, I stopped by the LAND ROVER car dealership to see what kind of cars are out for lease / sale. I'm thinking about getting the 2012 Land Rover LR4. I need a new SUV for the city. I am thinking about the LR4 because gwapo kaayo ang design. Plus, it is exceedingly spacious sa sulud. Gwapa pod kaayo ang driving, it is so very smooth to drive.

Bran, by just looking at the physical appearance of the person, how would you know that a person has AIDS?

Mike,

AIDS patients are usually often times riddled with a lot of infections because the HIV virus has effectively destroyed that person's White Blood Cells (specifically the CD4 T cells). AIDS patients are usually thin, have easy brusing, they have pneumonia (most common infection is pneumocystis carinii), they have also white membranous overgrowth in their mucosal lining of the mouth, and suffer from a lot of bacterial infection, fungal infection. AIDS patients don't die because of AIDS, they usually die of the most common infection that a normal person's immune system would be able to kill off; so AIDS patients usually die of pneumonia, flu, meningitis etc.

It is also very hard to treat AIDS patients because their immune system has been wiped out, they are dependent on high doses of powerful antibiotics, which also have a lot of RENAL TOXICITY side effects. And the Anti-VIRAL drugs we give to patients to treat the HIV virus such as ziduvidine, azithioprine, etc, also have the propensity to cause APLASTIC CRISIS, it destroys the bone marrow, and causes bone marrow suppression, so it can cause aplastic anemia pod.

Delikado kaayo ni ilang situwasyon, Mike.

actually, medyo matawag kog tuho-tuhoon.  my basis for believing the feng shui is as simple as my belief in acupuncture and why the pyramids of egypt are designed that way.  we find ways to align the energies around us.  once, i had terrible headaches that cannot be explained, until i realized that i slept with my head directly under a very big beam.  my constant headaches went away after i moved my bed.  the best way for calling the best of energies?  prayers.

as for chan chu, every time i look at this particular decoration (and maneki neko, the japanese battery-operated beckoning cat), i'm simply reminded to save.  the reminder is enough good energy.  so, yes, i mean it when i say i have more 10-peso coins now because i save 10-peso coins in my piggy banks (that's plural, hehe), piggy banks being a childhood habit that i never let go.

and yes, i want my money plant by the main door, below the wind chimes.  lording it over everything, at the topmost middle of the door, is a crucifix.

Isles,

I'm amazed that you are so fond of Eastern (Chinese) practices in Feng Shui ! Yes, I also subscribe to this, as I was taught by my mom on the aspects of negative and positive chi (energy). Arranging a place according to Feng Shui also deflects negative energy.
