Bran, by just looking at the physical appearance of the person, how would you know that a person has AIDS?
Mike,
AIDS patients are usually often times riddled with a lot of infections because the HIV virus has effectively destroyed that person's White Blood Cells (specifically the CD4 T cells). AIDS patients are usually thin, have easy brusing, they have pneumonia (most common infection is pneumocystis carinii), they have also white membranous overgrowth in their mucosal lining of the mouth, and suffer from a lot of bacterial infection, fungal infection. AIDS patients don't die because of AIDS, they usually die of the most common infection that a normal person's immune system would be able to kill off; so AIDS patients usually die of pneumonia, flu, meningitis etc.
It is also very hard to treat AIDS patients because their immune system has been wiped out, they are dependent on high doses of powerful antibiotics, which also have a lot of RENAL TOXICITY side effects. And the Anti-VIRAL drugs we give to patients to treat the HIV virus such as ziduvidine, azithioprine, etc, also have the propensity to cause APLASTIC CRISIS, it destroys the bone marrow, and causes bone marrow suppression, so it can cause aplastic anemia pod.
Delikado kaayo ni ilang situwasyon, Mike.
