Labor Day rallies in Metro Manila and other key cities in the country on Thursday were peaceful, Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Avelino Razon Jr., said.

As of late Thursday afternoon, Razon said there were "no significant reports of violence or confrontation" in protest actions in the capital, and in the cities of Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Baguio, Calamba, Legazpi, and Cavite, crediting this to a combination of police preparedness and protesters’ cooperation.

"Our preparations and the cooperation of those who took part in the public assemblies were instrumental to the generally peaceful outcome of the event," Razon said in a statement.

"This only goes to show that peaceful and orderly public assemblies can be held if everyone will cooperate," he added.

Razon said the PNP would return to the lowest "normal" alert nationwide at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Metro Manila had been placed on "full" alert, while the rest of the country was on the second highest "heightened" alert.

Thousands of workers rallied at the foot of historic Don Chino Roces Bridge, formerly known as Mendiola, for higher pay and better working conditions.

In an earlier news conference in Camp Crame, the chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), Director Geary Barias, said the rallies in the metropolis were "very peaceful and orderly." He attributed this to earlier dialogues with rally organizers and to a policy of keeping policemen on the sidewalks instead of confronting rallyists to avoid tension.

A total of 2,500 anti-riot policemen have been deployed to secure the capital, 1,200 of whom were deployed in the vicinity of Mendiola, a few meters from Malacañang, Barias said.

An additional 400 soldiers were deployed to secure the Palace, Barias told reporters in Camp Crame.

Roads around Malacañang were blocked and tightly guarded since early, forcing motorists and pedestrians to take detours.

"The rallies have been very peaceful and orderly," he said.

Thursday afternoon, some 7,000 protesters belonging to the party list Bayan Muna, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), Kilusang Mayo Uno, and allied groups massed up at Mendiola after marching from the Liwasang Bonifacio, where they had staged a rally earlier.

Earlier, at noon, some 2,000 protesters from the Buklurang Manggagawa ng Pilipinas (BMP) Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) and Sanlakas converged at the foot of the Don Chino Roces Bridge, and dispersed after an hour-long program, he said.

These groups marched from the Liwasang Bonifacio although their number receded as they neared Mendiola.

The Bayan-led rally at the Liwasang Bonifacio was joined by Bayan Muna Representative Teodoro Casiño, Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran, and KMP Chairman Rafael Mariano.

"Ito ang Labor Day na walang maasahan ang mga manggagawa...puro pangako lamang at malabong maisakatuparan [This is the Labor Day when the workers can hope for nothing…only promises that cannot be fulfilled]," Casiño.

Beltran called the protest a “unified resistance,” which he said was the result of the government's incapacity to meet the demands of workers.

However, Beltran said that this kind of mass action, even when branded as communism, was better than not being able to do anything for the country.

He quoted in Filipino an Argentinian priest that once said, “It is better to be called a communist rather than a saint if the communist will ask why the poor are poor, why the poor are growing in number, and why poverty is worsening.”

While the militant groups presented different solutions to alleviate workers' condition, there was a unified demand for the P125 legislated wage increase.

"Anumang increases ay dapat idaan through legislation kasi dapat lahat ng manggagawa ay magkaroon ng pagtaas ng sahod. Kaya ang panawagan namin ay P125 ngayon na [Whatever increases there will be should pass through legislation because the wages of all workers should be raised. That is why our call is for P125 wage increase now]," Presto Suyat, KMU spokesman, told INQUIRER.net.

Reyes said, "Si Presidente mismo ang humarang sa [The President herself is against the] P125 legislated wage increase."

He added in Filipino, “This is why she announced the wage increase yesterday, even if it would still be implemented in July, because other than that the President could not do anything for the workers.”

Aside from the P125 legislated wage increase, the KMU asked the government to reduce tax on petroleum, diesel and basic goods, and to stop extrajudicial killings, Suyat said.

Earlier on Thursday, Akbayan Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel said that if she had to rate President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's performance, she would give the chief executive a zero.

"I would be giving her a zero grade and there will be no appeal for [a] repeat," said Baraquel, noting that Arroyo's programs have not improved the lives of working Filipinos.

She said Arroyo must heed labor groups' calls for an unconditional zero percent income tax for minimum wage earners.

Around 100 workers from various groups gathered outside the University of Santo Tomas in Manila early Thursday before marching to Liwasang Bonifacio and then to Mendiola.

Barias said although they have not received security threats, the Agence France-Presse reported that elite police commandos armed with assault rifles however were deployed on highways leading to Manila, while "crowd dispersal units" were also placed on full alert near key government buildings.

"The economic crisis is sharper and more intense this year," said Reyes, Bayan secretary general.

"Workers in the Philippines have every right to be angry and frustrated," over government policies, he said.(INQUIRER.net)

Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Marcelino C. Libanan has hailed immigration personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport for a job well done in the arrest and detention of a foreigner suspected of being involved in human trafficking.

At the same time, Marcelino C. Libanan warned Tuesday that international human trafficking syndicates “are wanting to get back to business in using Manila as [a] transit point [for their] entry to other destinations.”

The BI arrested last April 26 Peter Lucky, identified as a citizen of Botswana, for possession of spurious and fake travel documents at the departure area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport 2 where he was to board a Philippine Airlines flight to Vancouver.

“The international human trafficking syndicates want to get back to business in using Manila as transit point in the entry to other destinations,” Libanan said, adding that the syndicates are testing if the BI has put down its guard against their illegal activities.

The African was kicked out of the country a few hours after his arrest. He was sent back to Kuala Lumpur. He is now in the black list of undesirable aliens and can not re-enter the Philippines.

Libanan said the Philippines was at one time a favorite transit point for international human trafficking operations. But determination in instituting reforms in the operations of the BI at the NAIA put a stop to that, Libanan said.

Libanan said the BI has three layers of controls at the departure area, describing the system as single flow but counter-checking. “The system has worked in putting a stop to the use of NAIA in the human smuggling to the US and Canada and other countries,” he added.

NAIA-BI officials said Lucky arrived at the old NAIA terminal as a transit passenger from Malaysia the day before he was apprehended.

He was at the departure area of the NAIA 2 terminal when accosted by members of the BI’s migration compliance and monitoring group (MCMG).

When questioned, Lucky, who claimed that he was a student in Malaysia, presented his Botswana passport, which turned out to be tampered and contained fake immigration arrival stamps.

He also could not explain why he was going to Canada, which made the immigration officers more suspicious and doubtful of the purpose of his trip.

Officials also said that although Lucky had a plane ticket for Vancouver, which he got in Malaysia, he still bought a new one from PAL that indicated a return trip to Manila.

Libanan said the Philippines has been a favorite transit point for international human trafficking operations.

But he stressed that they have instituted reforms that have helped “in human smuggling to the US and Canada and other countries.”

A photo taken and released by the Austrian police shows suspect Josef F. at an unspecified location. Austria's police questioned a man identified in a police statement as Josef F., who they say held his daughter captive for 24 years and sexually abused her in what stunned Austrians dubbed a "house of horrors" in a high-tech, windowless cell where she allegedly gave birth to at least six children. Two police forensics teams arrived on the scene Monday morning and technicians in white suits entered the apartment block in Amstetten, a blue-collar town about 75 miles west of Vienna.

A photo taken by a forensic team shows a view into a hidden room in a house in Amstetten, Austria, in which a woman is believed to have been held captive for 24 years.

Filipinos appear to be populating the design and fashion in the city of Milan, with the Philippine consulate general there registering an average of 1,000 Filipino births a year or an average of three a day, an official told INQUIRER.net.

Pedro Chan, consul general in the Italian city, said that his office also solemnized an average of four to six marriages a week, with some of the young women already in the family way.

“Some Italians view this phenomenon as a blessing to their country, which has a declining -- if not zero -- birth rate, arguing that if Italian couples no longer want to bring forth babies, then Pinoys [Filipinos] are happily doing their work for them,” Chan said in an exchange of e-mails with INQUIRER.net.

Chan said the increasing marriage and birth registrations among the Filipino population in Milan have prompted the consulate general to hold pre-marriage counseling seminars, which started early April.

“The seminar is the consulate’s response to the Filipino youth’s growing need for guidance on family relations, as well as for legal advice. It also aims to orient parties wishing to contract marriage of their rights and obligations,” a statement from the consulate said.

“Napakaraming mga kabataan ang nagpapakasal sa konsulado. Pero alam ba nila ang kanilang pinapasok? Hindi sapat na nagmamahalan lang sila o magiging mga magulang na sila. Kailangang maintindihan nila ang lahat ng responsibilidad na kasama sa pagpapakasal [So many young people are getting married at the consulate. But do they know what they’re getting into? It is not enough that they love each other or that they will become parents. They need to understand all the responsibilities that come with marriage]. We wish to strengthen migrant Filipino families through seminars like this,” Chan said.

At the seminar last April 6, lawyer Cheryl Vitales-Labo, legal officer of the consulate, briefed 10 Filipino couples who attended the two-hour seminar on a wide range of topics including the legal definition of marriage, the requisites of marriage, the obligations of spouses, the effect of marriage on properties, and the dissolution of marriage.

Vice Consul Mary Luck Hicarte reminded the couples, especially those expecting to have babies soon, to strike a balance between their work and family lives.

“Dito sa Italya, hindi kinukulang sa materyal na mga bagay ang mga anak ng ating mga kababayan. Ang kulang sa mga batang ito ay panahon kasama ng kanilang mga magulang [Here in Italy, the children of our countrymen do not lack for material things. What is lacking is time with their parents],” she said.

The consulate said the pre-marriage counseling seminar would be conducted for free every first Friday of the month. It is open to all Filipino citizens who wish to contract marriage, but is a requirement for the issuance of marriage license for those below 25 years old, in line with Article 16 of the Family Code of the Philippines.

The government statistics said that as of December 2006, there were 128,080 Filipinos in Italy. Of this number, 23,108 are permanent residents, 84,972 are in Italy temporarily, and 20,000 are irregular.

Milan’s population, on the other hand, is about 1.3 million.

The Philippines has banned the sale of organs to foreigners because of a surge in the illegal trade of kidneys and other organs taken from the poor, the health secretary said on Tuesday.

Francisco Duque said the government was also revising its policy on organ transplants and was promoting the use of organs from dead bodies as well as living related donors to discourage the thriving illegal trade.

"They feast on our poverty," Duque told a news conference, saying the donors, frequently impoverished and ill-educated, were getting as little as $1,000 (504 pounds) to $5,000 for a kidney.

A kidney transplant operation can cost an additional 350,000 to 500,000 pesos (4,187 pounds-6003 pounds) at a state hospital and could go as high as 1 million to 2 million pesos in more than 20 private medical facilities in the Philippines.

Hundreds of foreigners have come to the Philippines for such transplants, attracted by the relatively low prices.

In 2007 alone, 50 percent of about 1,050 kidney transplants were performed on foreigners, clearly violating a 2002 directive allowing foreigners only 10 percent of annual kidney transplants.
Only 690 cases of kidney transplants were recorded in 2006 with more than 60 percent of them involving foreigners from the Middle East and Japan.

Almost all transplants for foreigners involved living non-related donors, officials said.(Reuters)

COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- The lone bus firm plying the Davao-Cotabato route continued to be harassed by a still unidentified group, apparently out to extort from it.

Monday evening, unidentified gunmen fired at a bus of the AVM Company, an affiliate of the Weena Bus Lines, while it was traveling to this city, Superintendent Esmael Ali, Shariff Kabunsuan provincial police director, said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. in Barangay (village) Dalumangcob, Sultan Kudarat town.

Eddie Soledad, Weena branch manager, said around four men riding two motorcycles fired at the bus with automatic rifles.

The driver and other passengers were unhurt but the windshield and several wooden seats were damaged.

Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director, ordered Ali to deploy mobile patrols from the boundary of Shariff Kabunsuan and North Cotabato, up to Cotabato City to ensure the safety of commuters.

Weena cut short its operations from Davao to Kabacan, North Cotabato, due to security concerns and the increasing number of non-paying passengers.

After the firm extended its route to Midsayap, also in North Cotabato, last week, three of its buses were damaged when an improvised explosive device was set off.

While Weena, which fields air-conditioned buses, cut its route, four AVM buses continued to serve the Davao-Cotabato route.

Superintendent Danilo Bacas, ARMM police spokesman, said precautionary measures have been undertaken to protect Weena buses from further harassment.(Mindanao Bureau)

The family of former teen star William Martinez is considering filing sexual harassment or acts of lasciviousness charges against young actor Baron Geisler after an alleged incident in a bar in Makati City.

Patricia Martinez, eldest daughter Martinez and wife Yayo Aguila, claimed that Geisler asked her to have sex with him and even touched her breasts at the Fiama bar on Saturday.

"I feel so disgusted because I treated him as a kuya," said Patricia, who accompanied by her father, went to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Monday.

Patricia alleged that Geisler was drunk at the time but said it was not a valid reason for him to allegedly harass her.

But the touted “Wild Child” of Pinoy Big Brother denied harassing Patricia.

“I just hugged her,” Geisler said in an interview on ABS-CBN.

He claimed he was actually acting out a role.

“I was excited. I just came from an acting workshop and my role was a maniac. Ugali ko na na [It is a habit] that I act out my new role,” said Geisler. “But she misunderstood my action.”

The Philippine embassy said the trafficking of Filipinas in Singapore "continues unabated."
US to help curb transnational crime.

The embassy’s admission came six month after INQUIRER.net first reported the sharp increase in the incident of the transnational crime in the island-state.

In the report it submitted to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) dated April 28, the Philippine embassy in Singapore reiterated its warning about the dangers of human trafficking.

The warning came in the wake of meetings between the Philippine embassy, Ambassador Steven Steiner of the United States Department of State's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, and officials from the Philippine Presidential Task Force on Human Trafficking, who went to Singapore to assess the situation there.

In November 2007, INQUIRER.net posted a special report on the growing number of young Filipino women being lured to Singapore on the false promise of a high-paying job only to end up in prostitution.

The increased incidence of trafficking of Asian women, including Filipinas, to Singapore prompted the United States State Department to downgrade the city-state's rating from Tier 1 in 2006 to Tier 2 this year.

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Belen Fule-Anota said Filipinas who want to work overseas must scrutinize their recruiters in the Philippines well and ensure they have valid contracts before leaving the country.

She also advised jobseekers to have their contracts duly verified by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) "before packing their bags for Singapore."

"They should not allow themselves to be deceived by the sweet tongue and false promises made by sex and labor traffickers because once they reach Singapore, they become more vulnerable to intimidation, deception, and exploitation," added the ambassador, who has served in the city-state for four years.

Steiner, who visited the Philippine embassy on the sidelines of a meeting in Singapore, acknowledged the ongoing bilateral cooperation between the two countries and the progress being made by the Philippines in fighting trafficking in persons.

He exchanged notes with embassy officials and discussed possible areas for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

In a separate meeting with the two-person team of the Presidential Task Force, the embassy proposed the improvement of inter-agency cooperation, particularly in the areas of rehabilitation, re-integration, and witness protection for the victims, and the prosecution of traffickers.

In a report submitted to the DFA early this year, the embassy in Singapore noted "an alarming increase" of 70 percent in human trafficking cases from 125 in 2006 to 212 in 2007. There were only 59 recorded cases in 2005.

Of the 212 human trafficking victims in 2007, a total of 57, or 27 percent, admitted to either having engaged in prostitution or being coerced by their Filipino and Singaporean handlers to prostitute themselves. Of the 57 victims, 39 were pub workers, 15 worked in escort service, while three were pick-up girls.

The embassy culled data from individual interviews, recorded statements, and affidavits of victims who reported to the embassy in 2007. The number is believed understated.

The Philippines considers trafficking in persons a serious transnational crime and human security issue requiring close international cooperation, particularly between the source and destination countries.

"Victims are considered as trafficked if they have been deceived, coerced or subjected to conditions of exploitation as defined by Republic Act 9208, a Philippine law otherwise known as the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003," the embassy said in a statement.

It said the Philippine definition of trafficking in persons is consistent with the definition in the United Nations Convention Against Organized Transnational Crime and its two protocols, all of which had been signed and ratified by the Philippines.

EASLEY, S.C. â€"  An 18-year-old man gunned down his father, stepmother and two siblings at the home they shared in suburban South Carolina, authorities said Saturday.

Nathaniel Dickson, 18, was arrested 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a home in Belton about 20 miles from where the bodies of his family members were found, Anderson County Sheriff's spokeswoman Susann Griffin said. He was charged with four counts of murder.

Less than 12 hours earlier, a 911 call led paramedics to find the father dead in the yard. Inside the home they found the other three victims, all shot to death.

The youngest victim, Dickson's 14-year-old brother, was apparently trying to hide behind a clothes dryer when he slain, authorities said.

Investigators have not determined a motive for the killings, Griffin said.

Griffin said Dickson does not have a lawyer. She would not say if he is cooperating with investigators.

The coroner's office identified the victims as Dickson's 46-year-old father, Samuel Andrew Dickson Jr.; his 46-year-old stepmother, Martiza Hurtado Dickson; his 19-year-old stepsister, Melissa Giliam Salazar; and his 14-year-old brother, Taylor Alex Dickson.

Neighbor Melissa Funk said Nathaniel Dickson moved out of his family's home after graduating from high school last year, but had moved back in the past few weeks. She said the teen played video games with her 16-year-old son and never appeared to cause any problems.

Authorities were called to the scene at about 9:30 a.m. by a 911 caller who reported someone had possibly fallen from a car.

Fred Gilbert, who has lived in the neighborhood for about 20 years, said most of the houses along the quiet, dead-end street near Easley are on one or more acre tracts.

"I've never had any problems, and I bought this house from my parents," said Gilbert, who lives about a quarter-mile from where the bodies were found.

Located in northwestern South Carolina, Easley is a city of about 19,000 people some 15 miles west of Greenville.

VIENNA, Austria â€"  A woman has told police that she was held prisoner in a cellar for almost 24 years by her father, who repeatedly raped her and fathered at least six children.

Lower Austria police said in a statement that the 42-year-old woman, identified as Elisabeth F., had been missing since Aug. 29, 1984. She was found by police in the town of Amstetten on Saturday evening following a tip.

Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs, told reporters that the 73-year-old father, identified in a separate police statement as Josef F., had been taken into custody.

In a chronology of events outlined in a statement, police said a letter written by Elisabeth F. had apparently surfaced a month after her disappearance asking her parents not to search for her.

Police said that, during questioning, Elisabeth F. told them her father began sexually abusing her when she was 11. Police said she alleged that he sedated, handcuffed and locked her in a room in the cellar on Aug. 28, 1984 in the Lower Austrian town of Amstetten.

During the 24 years that followed, she said she was continually abused by her father and gave birth to six children, the statement said. In 1996, she said she gave birth to twins but one died several days later because it was not appropriately cared for; police are investigating. Josef F. had then apparently removed the corpse from the cellar and burned it, the police statement said. It was not immediately clear if the twin who allegedly died was included in the police tally of the number of children.

Sunday evening, police said investigators found the area where the woman had been held captive along with three of her children.

In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Polzer said the area had "several" rooms and a "very narrow" hallway.

Police found it after Josef F. gave them a code to unlock a hidden door, Polzer said.

On its Web site, ORF reported that the rooms also were very narrow and at most 1.7 meters (5.6 feet) high.

Police picked up Elisabeth and her father on Saturday close to the Amstetten hospital after they received a tip.

According to the police statement, Josef F. had freed Elisabeth and two of her three children from the cellar, and had told his wife that she had come back to them. The third child in the cellar, Kerstin F., was found unconscious on April 19 in the apartment building where the grandparents live, along with a note from Elisabeth asking that she be taken care of. She was then hospitalized.

Police said Elisabeth F. appeared "greatly disturbed" psychologically during questioning. She agreed to talk only after authorities assured her that she would no longer have to have contact with her father and that her children would be cared for.

One of her children, identified as 19-year-old Kerstin F., is currently hospitalized in Amstetten in very serious condition.

Police said three of the children were registered with authorities and lived with the grandparents.

According to the police statement, Josef F. and his wife, Rosemarie, had told authorities they had found those children outside their home in 1993, 1994 and 1997, each time with a note from the mother. In the first letter, Elisabeth F. had apparently said she already had a daughter and son. In another letter, she said she gave birth to another son in December 2002, according to the statement.

The other three children were apparently held captive in the cellar with their mother, Polzer told reporters in broadcast remarks.

"Elisabeth F. taught them how to speak," Polzer was quoted as saying by the Austria Press Agency.

The agency quoted police as saying Josef F. has been arrested but had not confessed.

The agency also quoted Gerhard Sedlacek, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in St. Poelten, as saying that the surviving children â€" three boys and three girls â€" are aged between 5 and 20.

DNA tests are expected to determine whether Josef F. is the father of the children.

Sunday's developments are reminiscent of the case of Natascha Kampusch, which shocked Austrians less than two years ago.

Kampusch was 10 years old when she was kidnapped in Vienna on her way to school in March 1998. She was held for the next 8 1/2 years by Wolfgang Priklopil, who largely confined her to a tiny underground dungeon in his home in a quiet Vienna suburb. Priklopil threw himself in front of a train just hours after Kampusch's dramatic escape on Aug. 23, 2006.(Associated Press)

BEIJING  â€"  A high-speed passenger train jumped the tracks and slammed into another train in eastern China on Monday, killing at least 66 people and injuring more than 400, a state news agency reported.

Seventy people were in critical condition after the pre-dawn crash in a rural area in Shandong province, Xinhua News Agency said on its Web site. The injured included four French nationals who were hospitalized with bone fractures, it said.

The accident just before the May Day long weekend holiday happened when a train traveling from Beijing to the coastal city of Qingdao derailed and hit a second passenger train at about 4:40 a.m., Xinhua reported. About 10 of the first train's carriages toppled into a dirt ditch.

The second train, traveling from Yantai to Xuzhou, also derailed, although it did not fall into the ditch. A news photo showed one of its carriages resting perpendicular to the track.

It was not clear what caused the first train to derail outside the city of Zibo.

News photos showed rescuers pulling passengers from a carriage that had fallen onto its side. Survivors bundled in white bed sheets from the sleeper cars stood or sat near the wreckage.

Xinhua said bloodstained sheets and broken thermos flasks could be seen on the ground beside the twisted train cars.

It did not say how many people were on both trains. Most of the passengers would have been asleep at the time of the crash.

"We were still sleeping when the accident occurred," one woman told Xinhua. The woman, 38, was traveling with her 13-year-old daughter. Both were not hurt and escaped from the train through a huge crack in the floor of their carriage.

Dozens of victims were being treated at the Zou village People's Hospital, though most were not serious cases, Xinhua reported, citing an unnamed hospital worker.

A doctor at the emergency clinic of the Zibo Center Hospital said all the major hospitals in the Zibo area were treating the injured. She gave no figures and would not give her name.

President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao were monitoring the situation, China Central Television reported. Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang and Railways Minister Liu Zhijun were headed to the site to oversee rescue efforts.

Nine hotels and 34 rescue centers were set up for the families of the victims, Xinhua said.

Xinhua said the accident had cut traffic on the Jinan-Qingdao railway, which links the provincial capital of Jinan with Qingdao, the site of the sailing competition for the Olympic Games in August.

It was the second major railway accident in Shandong this year. In January, 18 people died when a train hurtling through the night at more than 75 miles per hour slammed into a group of about 100 workers carrying out track maintenance near the city of Anqiu.

Trains are the most popular way to travel in China, and the country's extensive rail network carried 1.36 billion passengers last year, Xinhua said. That is slightly behind India, which had 1.4 billion passengers last year, according to the Indian National Railways Web site.

The provincial government officially confirms the nomination for the Chocolate Hills to be included in the list of nominees in the global search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature (N7W).

Gov. Erico B. Aumentado filed the formal nomination to the New 7 Wonders of Nature, a non-government organization that launched the search to
determine sites which would qualify to vie for the world's top 7 wonders of nature.

The action of the governor came following the reported de-listing of the Chocolate Hills, not just in the ranking of the top 7, but from the general list of nominees.

The de-listing surprised the Boholanos from all over the world since the Chocolate Hills was already ranked "No. 6" before it was de-listed from the list of nominees early last week.

The de-listing united the Boholanos worldwide in demanding an explanation from the sponsoring group.

Rep. Edgar Chatto who is the chairman of the House committee on tourism made official queries at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Manila regarding the matter.

City Mayor Dan Lim who was designated by the governor to spearhead the campaign hit the ground through the Loboc Children's Choir members who are now in the United States and Canada. Three sets of "Chocolate Hills" campaign shirts were given to the choir members who were asked to wear them wherever they go during the US-Canada stint. Lim said the city government is ready to release P500,000 to finance the saturation of information campaign through billboards and other advertising campaign, both here and abroad.

GLOBAL CONCERNS

Boholanos around the world who were shocked to learn about the de-listing of Chocolate Hills from the N7W nominees immediately communicated through email reaching to other Filipino groups in the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

It was through Bob Galang, a native of Carmen town and now residing in the US, that the organizers of the N7W search gave the procedure for the reinstatement of Chocolate Hills in the rankings.

Nadja Rahal of N7W Foundation asked for the setting up of an Official Support Committee (OSC) for Chocolate Hills to be back in the campaign.
Galang coordinated with Carmen Mayor Manuel Molina to sign and submit the OSC document to the N7W Foundation.

In an email message forwarded to PTC chair Peter Dejaresco, Galang said "phone lines and emails [of the Boholano community abroad] are enormously busy inquiring when they could cast their votes for Chocolate Hills."

In another email to Rahal, Galang said that Boholanos all over the world are "excited" to support the Chocolate Hills campaign. "I don't want that momentum to die down in the midst of this very crucial campaign to put the Chocolate Hills in the Magic 7," he said.

Large Filipino communities throughout California, Florida, Chicago, Texas, New York and even in European cities have already pledged to spread the word regarding the campaign.

UNESCO's STATEMENT

In a statement, UNESCO said it was in fact repeatedly "invited to support" the search posted and voted on the internet but it chose "not to collaborate" with the foundation.

Ambassador Soliven, UNESCO secretary-general and executive director of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, quoted the statement, which was issued by the UNESCO Headquarters, in her letter replying Rep. Chatto's query on the search.

The N7W foundation, established by Swiss-born Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber, has no explanation as of presstime on Chocolate Hills' delisting not just from the running ranking of the elite seven but from the list of all nominees.

"The list of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature' will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the Internet and not the entire world," Soliven quoted the UNESCO Headquarters.

She said UNESCO "is not at all in the position to relate with the New 7 Wonders Foundation."

Provincial Board Members Ester Corazon Galbreath, Sangguniang Panlalawigan chair of committee on tourism, had the issue raised in the presentation here Wednesday of the June-scheduled 6th Philippine Business Mission to Japan.

The presentation, attended by Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Patria Aurora Roa, was intended to ready the mission, which will market Philippine tourism.

Marinette Reyes, a UNESCO staff, told Chatto that incumbent UNESCO Director General Koichico Matsuura himself confirmed the organization's non-involvement in the foundation's undertaking.

Soliven's letter to Chatto obviously pointed to the NGO as culpable itself.

"In fact, in our research, the foundation does not seem to encourage feedback and inquiries as they do not have any contact details unless your concern is a business partnership," the ambassador wrote.

Philippine Congress' tourism committee was not informed in any manner beforehand of the search that was to be launched by the NGO based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Together with Weber, former UNESCO Director General Federico Mayon privately initiated the search, according to UNESCO.

Soliven appreciated the Boholanos campaign to raise awareness for the preservation of Bohol's cultural and natural heritage.

In his letter to Chatto, Soliven quoted the statement of the UNESCO Headquarters which read:

"This campaign was launched in 2000 as a private initiative by Bernard Weber, the idea being to encourage citizens around the world to select seven new wonders of the world by popular vote. Although UNESCO was invited to support this project on several occasions, the Organization decided not to collaborate with Mr. Weber.

"UNESCO's objective and mandate is to assist countries in identifying, protecting and preserving World Heritage. Acknowledging the sentimental or emblematic value of sites and inscribing them on a new list is not enough. Scientific criteria must be defined, the quality of candidates evaluated and legislative and management frameworks set up.

The relevant authorities must also demonstrate commitment to these frameworks as well as to permanently monitor the state of conservation sites. The task is one of technical conservation and political persuasion. There is also a clear educational role to the site's inherent value, the threats they face and what must be done to prevent their loss.

"There is no comparison between Mr. Weber's mediatised campaign and the scientific and educational work resulting from the inscription of sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The list of the '7 New Wonders of the world' will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the Internet and the entire world. This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public."

BOY SCOUTS 2M VOTES

Meanwhile, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) has pledged two million votes to the Chocolate Hills and the two other Philippine sites nominated in the online global search.
J. Rizal C. Pangilinan, BSP secretary general, issued a memorandum to the movement's 109 local councils and 10 regions to vote for the Bohol's Chocolate Hills, the Tubbataha Reef and the Underground River in Palawan.

KEEP WATCHING. Boholanos all over the world are closely monitoring
the list of nominees for the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" and find anew
the Chocolate Hills which was de-listed. These perfectly cone-shaped
hills that look like mint Chocolate during this unexpected raining days in
summer continue to attract tourists.

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Friday warned tourists not to venture near Mayon Volcano's hardened lava trail, one of the city's tourist attractions, as it is within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.

"The volcano is still in an unstable condition and an unexpected explosion can occur anytime," said Phivolcs science research analyst Alex Baloloy.

He said the volcano's status remains at alert level one and an explosion could endanger tourists.

Reports said tourists have been visiting the lava trail in Bonga gully in Barangay (village) Bonga on the southeastern part of the volcano.

The lava trail, about 6.8 kilometers long, is the longest in 30 years.

In its Mayon Volcano update Friday, Phivolcs said the crater glow intensity has been raised to two, which meant that the glow can be seen by the naked eye.

Baloloy said the Ligñon Hill Observatory has observed the intermittent crater glow since January 5.

Phivolcs also reminded the public of the seven-kilometer extended danger zone at the southeastern slope and other areas that remain off-limits "due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rock falls from the upper slopes."

On July 2006, Phivolcs raised Mayon's alert level to three after the volcano spewed lava.

The status was raised to alert level 4 in August of the same year, meaning a "hazardous, explosive eruption" was imminent.

More than 40,000 residents living on the southeast section of the volcano were asked to seek shalter in different evacuation centers in Legazpi City, Tabaco City, Ligao City and the towns of Daraga, Guinobatan, Camalig, Sto. Domingo and Malilipot.

The most destructive eruption of Mayon occurred on February 1, 1814, when 1,200 people died.(

There’s no other way to say it â€" a sex slip-up just isn’t sexy.

Yet Mars and Venus make mistakes all the time when making love, squelching some well-intended efforts.

Although both genders are guilty of sexual errors, I’m going to take a look at some of the miscalculations that men sometimes make.

Whether it's titillation tactics, misjudging erogenous zones or misguided notions as to what women want, men need to avoid the following bedroom blunders if they want to become great lovers:

1. Thinking that foreplay starts in the sack. The timer for enticing does not start once you hit the sheets. Your pre-game show is best approached as an all day affair. Women love to be wooed. Sex is a head game â€" in more ways than one â€" and women want to know you can’t get them out of your mind. We love knowing that we are desired.

Men, whether your plan is to “get some,” rev up her engine or bring her to fast orgasm, your strategy should begin long before you enter the bedroom.

This isn’t necessarily because women need a lot of time to get warmed up. Given that a couple of my girlfriends can attain an orgasm in a minute or two, at least by themselves, my sense is that the "statistic" that women need an average 20 minutes of foreplay before penetration tends to be overused.

2. Going south too soon. Do not “pass go and collect $200.” Diving in for the genitals too soon usually isn’t the best idea. A woman needs to be properly aroused before any below-the-belt action feels good.

Be sure to focus on her entire body â€" head to toe â€" before going for the gold.

3. Ignoring the clitoris. Many men think a woman’s orgasmic ability is due to penetration. Yes, there is certainly pleasure in this part of the performance, but the bell of the ball is being left out of the party.

More than 70 percent of women experience clitoral orgasm when it comes to maximum reaction, so men need to make sure they are not ignoring the clitoris. It also helps if you actually know where the clitoris is located â€" some have been known to rub the urethral opening, which can be a big no-no for some ladies.

4. Missing the G spot. In digging for buried treasure, many guys don’t know that “X” doesn’t always mark the spot. Found on the front wall of the vagina, a woman’s G spot may be a little higher or lower, or more to one side than the other, than often depicted.

Its size may also vary, from as small as a pea to as large as a quarter. Hint: she needs to be aroused before you even have a prayer of finding it.

5. Becoming too goal-oriented in your efforts. There is nothing more endearing than a man who wants to play. Just don’t get caught up in yourself. Your sexual exploration should be playtime for two.

Stay “present” in the moment â€" connecting with your partner will bring the ultimate climax to both of you.

6. Gaining weight and still thinking you're attractive. "For better or worse” should include weight fluctuations, but don’t let yourself go completely.

You don’t know how many women have complained to me about the double standard in staying attractive: Women are expected to stay hot-to-trot, men aren’t.

So if you want continued star treatment for your rock star performances, know that Meat Loaf isn’t the singer to emulate.

7. Not knowing about her need to be naughty. Sometimes she needs to get in touch with her adulterated side. In fact, research has found that women are more aroused by explicit fantasies than romantic ones. Forget the prince on a white horse or canoodling on the beach.

Many women enjoy all sorts of erotica. Don’t be afraid to play up her far-from-virtuous visual nature.

8. Thinking she's supposed to act like a porn star.
When I was the co-host of “Sex Files” on Sirius’ Maxim Channel, I couldn’t believe how many questions we received from men about how to get their lover to do something specific in bed.

As seen in porn films, many men expect their lovers to fulfill their every fantasy. Remember that porn is fantasy, not reality. Expecting her to act like a porn star is simply not fair.

9. Thinking you're supposed to look like a porn star. Despite what XXX-rated films indicate, most women are not lusting after the three-legged man. The Ron Jeremy package deal doesn’t do it for most.

Last weekend, this topic came up with my girlfriends over cocktails. As the ladies crossed their legs, the overall consensus on "larger than life" was: “What are you supposed to do with that?”

Maybe some women are up for the challenge, but many are fine with the guy who fits within the norm. Don’t be too hard on yourself for being just that.

10. Believing one orgasm is enough.
She’s just had a mind-blowing orgasm, maybe two. So she should be perfectly content, right? Wrong.

Women are not nearly as quick to come down from their aroused state as men are post-sex. Many can be launched right back to bliss, and many women do crave more action and orgasms, even if they were perfectly satisfied by the first sexperience.

Even if you’re exhausted, don’t rule out Round 2. There are other ways of pleasing her, so go ahead and do it all over again.

The gay community is up in arms over Msgr. Achilles Dakay's statement that a homosexual act was the root cause of the scandalous video of a rectal surgery in Cebu City that ended up on the YouTube.

The patient who calls himself Danilo is seeking P1 million in moral damages and P5 million in exemplary damages.

"It's odd that the victim is being blamed for what happened," Jonas Bagas, secretary general of the Lesbian and Gay Legislative Advocacy Network (Lagablab), said Thursday at the Usapang Balita press forum.

Bagas said it was actually the Church that was partly to blame for reinforcing discrimination against gays in the country.

"Society looks down on gays and lesbians because the Church teaches that gay sex is abnormal. And this helps create the climate and stigma of discrimination," he said.

Bagas said gay sex was "a normal thing," and that even some priests bound by the vow of celibacy engaged in sex.

"It's impossible [to live without sex]," he said. "There are some priests who engage in sexual behavior. It's natural behavior."

Dakay, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Cebu, said over the Church-run Radio Veritas on Wednesday that the main issue in the scandal was the male patient's homosexual act, and not his mistreatment.

All about respect

Said Ging Cristobal of the Lesbians Advocates of the Philippines (LEAP): "If we ban gay sex, shouldn't we also ban heterosexual sex? The issue here is discrimination. Why are people wanting to turn our focus away from it?

"This is all about respect. This is nonnegotiable."

Cristobal said the patient had been receiving text messages on his mobile phone, warning him to "shut up."

She said the origin of the "threats" was unknown.

According to Bagas, the male patient was "raped" by the male prostitute whom he had contracted for sex, and his mistreatment in the hands of doctors and nurses smacked of discrimination.

"This is a clear case of discrimination against a gay patient," he said.

Bagas said that instead of blaming gays, the Church should find ways to end the discrimination against them.

Victim thrice over

He added: "Offhand, it would be good if the Church calls on the government to conduct mandatory human rights education for health professionals, especially those planning to work abroad."

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casiño said the scandal should prod Congress to take a fresh look at the antidiscrimination bill that had been pending for years.

"He's a victim thrice over," the party-list lawmaker said of the patient. "First, [there was] the sexual abuse, then the abuse by doctors, and third, [his mistreatment because] he's an ordinary minimum-wage earner. Can you imagine if this gay is from Forbes Park? Would the doctors risk abusing him?"

Sanctions needed

Casiño observed that gays and lesbians were "not at the forefront" of the fight for the enactment of the bill against discrimination.

"It would be good if they come out and push for the bill," he said.

Iloilo Representatives Janette Garin and Ferjenel Biron, both physicians, said the use of cellular phones during operations should be regulated.

"You're allowed to carry cell phones with the consent of the patient. Obviously, there was no consent in this case; he was defenseless. And we know exactly the motive: Simply to humiliate," Biron said.

Garin said the incident "might not be an isolated [case]."

"Why did it happen? Is it because society is tolerating it? Is the law too lax?" she said, adding:

"A strong Medical Act should be passed with powers to sanction members [of the medical profession]."

ROME, Italy  -- The body of Padre Pio, a hugely popular 20th century Italian saint, went on public display Thursday in a southern Italian town where thousands gathered to pray.
Padre Pio, who died in 1968 at age 81, was a mystic monk who many Catholic faithful believe bore "stigmata," or wounds like those Jesus suffered at his crucifixion, on his hands and feet. He was made a saint in 2002.

Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, head of the Vatican's sainthood office, lead an open-air Mass for thousands of faithful before the unveiling of the saint's body in a church in San Giovanni Rotondo, where the saint had lived.

"Today, we venerate his body, opening a particularly intense period of pilgrimage," Saraiva Martins said. "This body is here, but Padre Pio is not only a corpse. Looking at his remains we remember all the good that he has made."

Saraiva Martins and other church officials later descended into the church's crypt for a private viewing of the body. State-run broadcaster RAI showed the body in a casket enclosed in crystal, wearing a monk's hooded dark robe.

The officials gathered solemnly around the crypt, and prayed. The faithful, who will be able to file past the body later Thursday, followed the ceremony through maxi TV screens outside.

The Capuchin monk, whose original name was Francesco Forgione, had an enormous following in Italy and abroad. He lived for decades with inexplicable bleeding wounds on his hands and feet.

Church officials exhumed the body so the faithful could pray before it, since this year marks the 40th anniversary of his death. They also wanted to take measures to ensure it was being well preserved.

Since the unearthing in March, the body has been prepared for public viewing in the crypt of the Santa Maria delle Grazie church in San Giovanni Rotondo, a town near the Adriatic in southern Puglia.

Church officials have said there was no sign of the so-called stigmata on his limbs after an initial examination, and that the body was in good condition.

Organizers say they expect 15,000 people to pay their respects to Padre Pio on the first day of the viewing. It is not yet known when the body will be reburied.

Padre Pio had a huge public following in life, as in death, and his beatification and canonization ceremonies drew hundreds of thousands of people to the Vatican.

For decades, though, many in the Vatican were uneasy about his popularity and scorned him, doubting that his wounds were real and that mystical virtues attributed to him were authentic. He was barred for years from saying Mass in public, even as his following grew immensely.

Padre Pio had an enormous following before his death in 1968.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands   -- Film director Paul Verhoeven has written a book that contradicts the Bible by suggesting that Jesus might have been fathered by a Roman soldier who raped Mary.

An Amsterdam publishing house said Wednesday it would publish the Dutch filmmaker's biography of Jesus, "Jesus of Nazareth: A Realistic Portrait" in September.

Verhoeven is best known as the director of blockbuster films including "Basic Instinct" and "RoboCop," but he is also a member of "Jesus Seminar," a group of scholars and authors that seeks to establish historical facts about Jesus.

Marianna Sterk of the publishing house J.M. Meulenhoff said the book included several ideas that ran contrary to Christian faith, including the suggestion that Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C.

The book also claims that Judas Iscariot was not responsible for Jesus' betrayal, she said.

The movie director's claims were greeted with some skepticism among those who have dedicated their careers to studying the life of Jesus.

One issue is that there is very little information about the life of Jesus outside of the Gospels. The Gospels as understood by Christians for nearly 2,000 years do not support Verhoeven's ideas.

William Portier, a professor of religious studies at the University of Dayton, in Ohio, said the Jesus Seminar was known for making provocative claims, but "they are real scholars -- you have to deal with them."

However, he said Verhoeven's ideas sounded "pretty out there."

John Dominic Crossan, a Jesus Seminar founder, agreed. He said that while Verhoeven was a member in good standing, there was little evidence for the view that Jesus was illegitimate.

Crossan said the claim was first reported in a polemic written in the second century against the Book of Matthew, intended for a Jewish audience.

"It's an obvious first retort to claims that Mary was a virgin," Crossan said. "If you wanted to do a hatchet job on Jesus' reputation, this would be the way."

The most likely scenario for people who don't accept that Jesus was literally the son of God and had no human father is simply that he was the son of Joseph, Crossan said.

Sterk said the book would be translated into English in 2009. Verhoeven hopes it will be a springboard for him to raise interest in making a film along the same lines, she said.

Verhoeven, 69, has dreamed of making a movie about Jesus' life for decades, she said.

Asked whether it would be difficult to follow Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" and Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ," she said Verhoeven knew he might be somewhat late to market.

"He is painfully aware of that," she said. "However, he has quite a different angle."

Paul Verhoeven wants to make a film based on
his imminent book about the origins of Jesus Christ.

For 28 years he had been working overseas. Now Raymundo Dimaculangan will finally come home to Cabuyao, Laguna -- but in a box.

Dimaculangan, 53, was found brutally mutilated and dead in his quarters in Saudi Arabia last April 17. Whoever killed him and why remain unclear, but the Saudi police have arrested five suspects, all Filipinos, for their alleged involvement in the crime.

Lorna Dimaculangan, sister of Raymundo, said family members received a text message last week from his brother's co-workers at the Saudi Electricity Company informing them that their brother had not reported for work for three days.

On April 17, worried co-workers went to Raymundo's quarters and found it locked. They also saw his service vehicle parked outside his quarters.

The co-workers, mostly fellow Filipinos, called for police assistance in opening Raymundo's quarters. When the door was finally unlocked, they found Dimaculangan's lifeless body inside.

Lorna told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that his brother had been savagely killed. Citing a text message, she said, "My brother was said to have suffered a horrible death. His leg was severed, his ribs broken and his neck slashed."

Lorna said Raymundo's wife, Nenita, was still in shock. She saw him last in December, when her husband went home to his wife and their three children for a month-long vacation.

Based on initial police investigation in Saudi Arabia, there was no forced entry in Dimaculangan's quarters. Lorna added, "According to his co-workers, based on investigation by Saudi police, his money and belongings were all intact.”

Lorna said there was a strong possibility that his brother knew who his killer was and that he was a fellow Filipino.

"When they opened the door, the police and co-workers found that food had been prepared. He had a visitor or visitors. That was the text message sent to us," she said.

She said they had received word on Monday that Saudi policemen had arrested five suspects. "No name had yet been given to us, but we were told that all those arrested were Filipinos."

She said relatives' priority now was to have the remains of her brother brought home. "We're crying for justice, but we would like first of all to have his body brought home at the soonest time."

But Lorna said that an officer from the Overseas Welfare Workers Administration in Saudi Arabia told her that it might take some time before they were able to bring home Raymundo's cadaver.

The same message was personally relayed to Lorna by one Attorney Salem of the Department of Foreign Affairs' Legal Affairs Division. "Attorney Salem told us they condoled with us, but they estimated that it would take months before the body was brought home," Lorna said.

The relatives went to the office of Vice President Noli de Castro, who is also presidential adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers, to seek assistance in having the body brought home immediately.

Subsequently, De Castro had asked the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia to expedite repatriation of Dimaculangan's remains.

New update:

From a legal standpoint, a civil suit for damages may be made against those responsible for posting on the Internet a controversial and unauthorized video of a rectal surgery performed at a government-run hospital in Cebu City, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said Thursday.

Gonzalez said the hospital in which the surgery was made, the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, should also be held accountable because it allowed people to watch in the operating room.

"There's clearly a case for damages. And the hospital would seem to be liable because why were people allowed to watch in the operating room?" Gonzalez told reporters.

Asked for the nature of the hospital's liability, he said that it could be sanctioned administratively.

"It's just like the liability of a hotel, for example, if you stay in a hotel and your valuables were lost," he added.

The video reportedly showed doctors extracting a perfume canister from the man's rectum. People in the background were supposedly heard cheering. The video was posted on the video sharing website YouTube.com.

According to him, the civil case for damages could be based on the violation of human relations under the Civil Code. He noted that the video of the surgery was posted on the Internet and shown in various parts of the world.

He cited Article 19 of the Civil Code, which states that "every person must, in the exercise of his rights and in the performance of his duties, act with justice, give everyone his due, and observe honesty and good faith."

He also pointed to Article 26, which states that several acts, including the vexation or humiliation of another person based on his religious beliefs, lowly station in life, physical defect or other personal condition, could produce a cause of action for damages.

The Board of Medicine and the Professional Regulatory Commission could also take action against those behind the video, he added.

Gonzalez said he also believed it was possible for the patient to pursue a criminal case for libel, if he wanted to.

But he also believed that the man who put the perfume canister in the patient's rectum was the one "more liable," and could possibly be charged for mutilation. But he added that the man should be found first.

WASHINGTON â€" Hillary Rodham Clinton’s victory in Pennsylvania breathed new life and fresh cash into her run for the Democratic presidential nomination, but only dented rival Barack Obama’s nearly unassailable lead in elected delegates. Despite the long odds, Clinton on Wednesday declared herself the best candidate to defeat Arizona Sen. John McCain, who wrapped up the Republican nomination about two months ago and has been benefiting greatly from the increasingly bitter battle between the Democrats.

“I’m confident that when delegates â€" as well as voters, like the voters of Pennsylvania just did â€" ask themselves who’s the stronger candidate against John McCain that I will be the nominee of the Democratic party,” Clinton said during a round of television appearances Wednesday.

As soon as her victory was known Tuesday night, Clinton launched an Internet fundraising campaign, hoping to erase part of her campaign’s heavy debt. She told said Wednesday morning she already had raised $3.5 million.

Later Wednesday, her campaign said she was “on track to raise $10 million online in the 24 hours since” she was declared the victor. The campaign said it was her best fundraising day ever. She has been badly trailing Obama in fundraising, raising about half of what he did in March, the last reporting period.

The two-term New York senator’s popular vote margin in Pennsylvania, which hovered between 9 and 10 percentage points as late returns were tallied Wednesday, gave her at least 82 of the state’s 158 delegates, according to an Associated Press analysis of returns. Obama won at least 73.

That means Obama still leads with 1,723.5 delegates, including separately chosen party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,592.5, according to the AP tally.

The candidates need 2,025 delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, meaning that the roughly 300 uncommitted superdelegates â€" out of a total of nearly 800 who have already lined up behind the candidates â€" were likely to decide the nomination. Superdelegates are party leaders who may choose whomever they like at the Democratic convention in August.

Barring a huge misstep by Obama, many superdelegates would be reluctant to ignore the ballots of the millions of Americans who have voted in record numbers in the most compelling party presidential nominating race in memory. Obama holds the lead in popular votes.

The remaining Democratic contests are primaries in North Carolina, Indiana, Oregon, Kentucky, West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota and Puerto Rico, and caucuses in Guam. Given party rules for apportioning delegates, both candidates would need improbably large victories in all those races to accumulate the necessary pledged delegates.

Both picked up superdelegate endorsements on Wednesday â€" Obama from Gov. Brad Henry of Oklahoma, who called him an inspirational leader who can unite the United States. Clinton was endorsed by U.S. Rep. John Tanner of Tennessee, co-founder of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats in Congress.

Tanner, who said the country is facing an economic crisis, praised Clinton in a statement released by her campaign as a leader “who can work with others to return to fiscal sanity.”

Clinton, bidding to be the first woman U.S. president, overcame Obama’s massive spending in Pennsylvania, especially television advertising that cut the former first lady’s early and overwhelming advantage in the state. He too would make history in U.S. politics as the first black to lead the country.

The Pennsylvania matchup was fierce and bitter, which seemed to harden attitudes among Democrats. Only half of each Democrat’s supporters said they would be satisfied if the other Democrat won the nomination, according to interviews with voters as they left polling stations.

“After 14 long months, it’s easy to forget what this campaign’s about from time to time,” Obama told an Evansville, Indiana, rally, Tuesday night, obliquely conceding that the Pennsylvania race turned nasty.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the distractions and the silliness and the tit-for-tat that consumes our politics, the bickering that none of us are entirely immune to, and it trivializes the profound issues: two wars, an economy in recession, a planet in peril, issues that confront our nation. That kind of politics is not why we are here tonight. It’s not why I’m here, and it’s not why you’re here.”

Clinton, when challenged on voter assessments â€" even among her supporters â€" that she ran a negative campaign in an interview with a TV news outlet, said: “This is a very civil campaign by any objective standard.”

“That’s just the way campaigns are run,” she said.

The candidates quickly left hard-fought Pennsylvania behind and headed to fresh challenges in Indiana â€" seen as a tossup â€" and North Carolina, where the Illinois senator was expected to win easily because of the large population of fellow African Americans. Primaries in those states will be held May 6.

On the Republican side, McCain skipped a vote on a Senate bill seeking equal pay for women, instead campaigning in a poverty-stricken neighborhood in New Orleans. Democrats had delayed the vote to give Clinton and Obama time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” McCain said.

Clinton criticized him, saying he was falling in line with President George W. Bush. “Women are earning less, but Senator McCain is offering more of the same,” she said.(FoxNews.com)

Is the world-famous Chocolate Hills eliminated from the official contenders of the global search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature?

The same question befuddled Boholanos around the world as they discovered Monday that Chocolate Hills was dislodged from 6th place on the online rankings of the New7Wonders website and could nowhere be found in the Top 77 of the internet polling.

The Chocolate Hills have consistently occupied the top 10 for the past weeks and had been in the top 20 for the past two months.

In fact, the good showing of the world-famous tourist site in the global search prompted the Bohol officialdom, the media, multi-sectoral groups and individuals to launch a massive campaign for votes.

However, starting Monday afternoon, for no apparent reason, Chocolate Hills did not only disappear from the Top 77 rankings but was also removed from the list of official nominees.

Gov. Erico Aumentado during the "888 News Forum" yesterday at the Bohol Tropics disclosed that he already communicated with the organizers of the search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

In his letter, the governor asked the organizers for an explanation on the de-listing of Chocolate Hills.

As doubts were raised regarding the de-listing, Aumentado informed the organizers that a German geological scientist, Dr. Eric Vos, has revealed that the Chocolate Hills were created over three million years ago when the island province of Bohol was under seawaters.

He said that the 1,268 hills located in the interior towns of Carmen, Sagbayan and Batuan were formed by undersea currents and tidal action.

"Being unusual geological formations," Aumentado said, "the hills have become the toast of tourists and nature lovers."

"In fact, former Pres. Fidel Ramos proclaimed Chocolate Hills as a geological monument" which is the "crown jewels of Bohol's tourism," the governor said.

NGO BEHIND THE SEARCH

The global search "7 New Wonders of Nature" is run by a non-government organization, and not by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This was the information gathered by Rep. Edgar Chatto, chair of the House committee on tourism upon inquiries made with UNESCO-Manila offices yesterday.

The query of Chatto came after Boholanos were starting to "demand" that the sponsoring group of the global search should explain why the world- famous Chocolate Hills was all of a sudden de-listed from the list of nominees.

However, the NGO known as the New 7 Wonders of Nature is being managed by its director Federico Mayor, a former UNESCO director.

The information relayed by Rep. Chatto was gathered from Marinet Reyes, development management officer IV of UNESCO-Manila offices whom the congressman called in reaction to the report that the Chocolate Hills was de-listed since last Monday.

Reyes was quoted as saying that UNESCO has "no control on the mechanics of the search as it is being run by an NGO reportedly based in Europe. However, she categorically said that since the global "popularity contest" is in search for new wonders of nature, then it is in line with the thrust of UNESCO to help preserve and promote heritage destinations. This is also in line with UNESCO's program to help promote "nature" destinations. Presently, UNESCO is headed by Director General Koichiro Matsuura.

Reyes assured the House tourism committee chair to officially inquire from the NGO tomorrow regarding the existence of the global search while checking likewise why the Chocolate Hills was de-listed from the list of nominees.

Rep. Chatto will expect the reply from UNESCO-Manila office regarding the query anytime this week.

"MAYON" EXPERIENCE

Three weeks ago, a similar incident happened to Mayon Volcano, another Philippine site nominated for the search. Mayon was on the 17th place but was also dislodged from the Top 77 and the list of official nominees.

Presently, two other Philippine sites remain in the nominees - Tubbataha Reef and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

Tubbataha is currently ranked 9th as of latest poll. There are over 200 contenders from all over the world.

Nominations and voting for the New 7 Wonders of Nature will continue until December 31, 2008. The top 77 sites, based on the number of global votes gathered, will become the official nominees and will be eligible for consideration by a Panel of Experts who will shortlist 21 finalists.

The Panel of Experts will be chosen by New7Wonders Foundations whose names will be withheld until the winners are announced.

NATURE'S BEAUTY AND MYSTERY. The world-renowned Chocolate Hills
spread over the towns of Carmen, Butuan and Sagbayan is Bohol's signature
tourist attraction. Cited as a geological monument, the near perfect cone
shaped hills landed in the top 10 of the search for the New 7 Wonders of
Nature but was de-listed from the nominees since Monday

CANBERRA, Australia â€"  The Olympic flame arrived in Australia on Wednesday for the next leg of the torch relay and was immediately whisked away to a secret location to avoid anti-China protesters.

Meanwhile in Nepal, authorities forced a mountain climber with a "Free Tibet" banner in his bags off Mount Everest, which Chinese climbers carrying the Olympic torch plan to ascend next month.

Criticism of China's human rights record has turned the torch relay into one of the most contentious in recent history. Anti-Chinese protests have dogged stops in Greece, Paris, London and San Francisco. Many countries, including Australia, have responded by modifying routes and boosting security.

Yard-high fences were being erected along the route through the Australian capital, Canberra, where 80 runners will carry the torch on Thursday. The torch will thread along a 10-mile route that passes Parliament House and within 200 yards of the Chinese Embassy.

Hundreds of police will guard the torch to prevent the type of interruptions that have marked the relay in other cities in the flame's global journey to the Beijing Olympics in August.

The flame arrived at an air base in Canberra from Indonesia and was greeted by government and Olympic officials and Aboriginal elder Agnes Shea, who said she hoped the torch's stay would symbolize "good will for all mankind."
A group of four people waved Chinese flags outside the gate of the base; there was no sign of protesters.

Officials said the flame's location was being kept secret between its arrival and the relay Thursday because of the threat of protests.

"I don't know, and I don't want to know," Australian relay organizer Ted Quinlan told reporters. "Originally, it was going to a hotel but there's a distinct possibility it's going to go to the embassy."

The climber on Mount Everest, whose identity has not been released, was caught with the banner at Everest's base camp, said mountaineering officials in Nepal's capital, Katmandu. The officials did not want to be named because they are not authorized to speak to reporters.

The climber is the first to be stopped by soldiers and policemen stationed on the Nepalese side of the world's highest mountain to prevent anti-China protests during the planned torch run to the summit of the world's tallest peak in the first days of May.

The officials said they were awaiting additional details due to communication problems.

There were small protests Wednesday in Australia.

In Sydney, activists unfurled a huge banner over a prominent billboard for Coca-Cola â€" an Olympic sponsor â€" that urged China to open talks with Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama. Police said they detained four people for questioning.

Earlier in the city, police stopped two people on the Sydney Harbor Bridge from hanging a banner demanding freedom for Tibet from Chinese rule. They were fined $95.

In Canberra, about 150 pro-Tibet supporters attended a vigil Wednesday evening outside China's embassy, spelling out "Free Tibet" with candles.

Police in Canberra sought to end lingering confusion about the role of Chinese security agents in the relay. Police chief Mike Phelan said three blue-clad Chinese "flame attendants" will always be near the torch but will have no official security role.

Chinese ambassador to Australia Zhang Junsai told Channel Nine television news Tuesday that Chinese security officials still may intervene, saying: "If the flame is attacked I believe they will use their body."

However, Australian officials said Wednesday that all security would rest with them. "I don't know if I can be any clearer than that," Phelan said. The officials have no special powers of arrest or immunity from prosecution if they were to intervene during the relay, he said.

One torchbearer withdrew from the relay earlier this week, saying the symbolism of the relay had changed after China's Tibet crackdown last month.

Other torchbearers said the Olympics were the wrong place to make political protests. Ian Thorpe, a five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer who will carry the torch Thursday, said the protests "shouldn't be centered around a specific event."

Pro-Tibetan and pro-Chinese demonstrations were expected Thursday. Both sides say they want the event to be peaceful.

Simon Bradshaw, campaign coordinator of the Australia Tibet Council, said he expected about 500 supporters for what he said would be peaceful protests in Canberra.

"This is not an attempt to mar the Olympics, and it's certainly not an attack on the Chinese people. It's a message of support for Tibet," Bradshaw told The Associated Press.

About 4,000 Chinese students are expected in the capital to support the torch relay.

At a news conference of relay officials that was dominated by questions about security, Qu Yingpu, a spokesman for the Beijing Games organizing committee traveling with the torch, conceded there had been some problems said it had been a success so far.

"Definitely," he told a news conference. "Like everything else, we have ups and downs, but we are quite easy with that."

-- A businessman who sold Viagra-laced chocolate as a food supplement called "Boom" was indicted Wednesday for mail fraud by a federal judge, and faces 20 years in jail if found guilty.

Tibor Liska pleaded guilty of selling by mail some 12,000 packets a month of sildenafil -- a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction sold under various names, including Viagra -- mixed with chocolate and herbs, US Attorney Michael Garcia said.

The "Boom" food supplements were distributed between March 2006 and November 2007 through the Yoi Jin Sei company in the United States, Australia, Colombia, Switzerland, Russia, Argentina, Japan and Slovakia, Garcia added.

The publicity surrounding the product said it contained plant-based food supplements, without specifying that it contained a drug that requires a prescription and could have side effects.

Liska was charged with mail fraud and could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years behind bars and fined up to $250,000 if found guilty, Garcia said.

He is due for trial on July 25.

I think Muslim and the NPA's are not totally the same, only that both of them form a group in order to protest against the government but they have different ideologist and principles.

And speaking of terrorism i think i disagree on the term calling them as a terrorist because  first of all, the meaning of terrorism is harming the people in order to wreak havoc, coerce and intimidate them.

And the Communist Party and the revolutionary movement in the Philippines have the New People's Army (NPA) which is a revolutionary army of the people. It was established to confront and destroy the reactionary Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) which are instruments of the ruling class to supress the revolutionary movement and the people who could not be coerced into following the wishes of the reactionaries.

The New People's Army has already been tested by the people in the last three decades as a revolutionary organization, as their very own army, and as their partner in their daily struggles not only in the military aspect, but in their livelihood struggle, in raising their level of education, literacy and culture, in developing other fields, and in self-governance. It is strictly forbidden to harm the people that they serve even in the slightest way. Thus, the NPA cannot become terrorist, especially the CPP that firmly leads and guides it.

And yet on their struggle daghang kinabuhi ang makalas but then its part of their beliefs that in changing a particular system  dugo og singot ang puhunan, bisan kinabuhi man tuod nila ang makalas but yeah they consider them as  martyr of the the revolution..

Deposed President Joseph Estrada may be in danger of committing a big blunder if he decides to join the presidential race in 2010, election lawyer Romulo Macalintal said yesterday.

Macalintal said Estrada should forget about seeking reelection on the back of popular clamor from his supporters or face political embarrassment by being disqualified.

“He is surely disqualified (to run again as president) under the Constitution and no amount of signature drive could erase the constitutional ban on his re-election bid,” Macalintal said.

Estrada supporters launched a signature gathering campaign to convince the former leader to seek reelection in the 2010 presidential polls.

Over 80,000 signatures were initially presented to Estrada as a gift for his 71st birthday last week.

Macalintal said supporters of Estrada, who was pardoned last year after being convicted of plunder, became disillusioned as they found it hard to accept that their idol no longer holds solid support from the masses.

“He no longer controls the ‘masa votes’ because there are new and young leaders who are appealable to the masses,” Macalintal said.

“Secondly, his supporters would think twice before voting for him for fear that their votes would be wasted once he is disqualified,” he said.

Macalintal also pointed out Estrada’s running in the 2010 elections would divide the opposition.

He said many from the opposition as well as those outside the administration have already expressed their intentions to run in 2010 and are seeking Estrada’s endorsement.

If Estrada decides to run himself, Macalintal said other opposition presidential wannabes will surely slug it out with the former president.

“So he (Estrada) is not sure of winning because other opposition presidentiables will surely not give in to him,” he said.

Macalintal earlier claimed that presidential hopefuls from the opposition are afraid of facing Vice President Noli de Castro in the 2010 presidential race.

He cited some presidential hopefuls distancing themselves from critics pushing for the resignation of President Arroyo amid allegations of corruption.

Macalintal said politicians eyeing the presidency in 2010 wanted Mrs. Arroyo to finish her term “not for anything else but because they are afraid to face the Vice President who would be a very formidable presidential bet as a sitting president.”

“(De Castro’s) being a strong number one in surveys of those trusted for 2010 polls, these presidential hopefuls would rather have GMA (President Arroyo) finish her term and have equal playing field with him,” he said.

ALBANY, N.Y.  â€"  A U.S. Postal Service worker is being praised after handling with extreme care her most precious package to date.

Lisa Harrell, 42, can add hero to her record after catching a 1-year-old baby who fell out of a second-story window Monday in Albany.

Harrell, a 14-year veteran of the Postal Service, was delivering mail to a home late Monday morning when she noticed the baby in a window above the front door. Harrell said the next thing she knew, the baby had fallen into her arms.

"I noticed the upstairs window open halfway," Harrell told the Albany Times Union. "The baby fell right into my arms. Everything happened so quick."

When the baby's mother, Brenda Morales, realized what happened, she ran outside and grabbed the girl, Niales, from Harrell. Morales thanked Harrell and then ran down the street to her mother's house.

“I said, ‘You should never had had that window open. Your baby could be dead,'” Harrell told the Times Union. "Thank God the baby was OK."

Paramedics checked the baby at the scene but found no injuries.

No charges are being filed against Morales, who says she had placed her daughter on a bed that was up against the window. Morales says her back was turned when her daughter crawled out the open window.

Albany Postmaster David Yanni told the Times Union that the stunning part about Harrell’s ordeal is that she was not on her normal route on Monday. On any other day, she would not have been on those steps at that time.

Harrell arrived at the Morales' home to deliver an Express Mail package.

"It wasn't her normal time to be there," Yanni said on Monday. "The stars were aligned for that baby today."

Yanni said the Postal Service is proud of Harrell. "She's certainly a real hero," he told the Times Union.

But for Harrell, it was just a lucky coincidence that she was able to save Niales.

"A hero? No. I was in the right place at the right time," Harrell told the Times Union. "God was there for me and the baby."

DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Hundreds of tribal families are fleeing their communities for fear of getting caught in the crossfire as government soldiers stepped up the hunt for communist guerrillas who camps were discovered recently.

Evacuees reported that a nine-month-old infant of the Mandaya tribe, Romilyn Cayan, died at an evacuation center where her family sought refuge after fleeing their hinterland village in New Bataan town, Compostela Valley.

But officials in the province said they have not heard of the baby’s death.

The military, on the other hand, while professing no knowledge of the evacuation, claimed any exodus from the hinterlands would have been instigated by the New People’s Army (NPA) to force government forces to cease their operations.

On April 7 and 8, the military began pounding the boundaries of three towns -- New Bataan and Compostela in Compostela Valley, and Baganga in Davao Oriental -- following the discovery of six NPA camps in the area.

The Cayan family, with about 300 other residents of their village, fled to the center of New Bataan or to villages they deemed safe, most of them walking barefoot for an hour to Purok (sub-village) 1, about 150 meters from a gymnasium and town hall that soldiers are now using as a base of operations.

Mariro Poquita, chairman of the Concerned Citizen for People's Rights (CCPR), said Romilyn was very weak when her family arrived in the town center. The infant’s fever went up but the town has no hospital where she could be rushed for treatment.

However, Lucrecia Limen Polinar, municipal information officer, said health officials have not monitored the infant’s death.

Poquita said other children have also contracted diseases, a situation made worse by the lack of food.

Evacuation has also been reported in Sitio Quarry in Barangay Ngan and Sitio Spur Dos in Barangay Taytayan in Compostela.

But Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Bautista, spokesman of the 10th Infantry Division, claimed the military is unaware of the evacuation of hundreds of families, but added that if this was true, it would have been "instigated by the NPA to pressure the military to pull out our forces."

"I think evacuation is very impossible considering that the troops are now in areas where there are no residents … " Bautista said.

He said the military has received reports ranking communist leaders are in the vicinity.

Sitio Quarry, according to a resident, has now become a "ghost town."

Regino Lazola, 54, said in Spur Dos, soldiers set up camp in an elementary school and a Protestant church. Lazola, chair of the Quarry Farmers Association, said the troops arrived in his village and questioned him about NPA members.

"They threatened to kill me because they said I was lying," he said. "One of them also said that if ever they monitor NPA members in our village, they will crush it [village] using cannons."
