COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- The lone bus firm plying the Davao-Cotabato route continued to be harassed by a still unidentified group, apparently out to extort from it.

Monday evening, unidentified gunmen fired at a bus of the AVM Company, an affiliate of the Weena Bus Lines, while it was traveling to this city, Superintendent Esmael Ali, Shariff Kabunsuan provincial police director, said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. in Barangay (village) Dalumangcob, Sultan Kudarat town.

Eddie Soledad, Weena branch manager, said around four men riding two motorcycles fired at the bus with automatic rifles.

The driver and other passengers were unhurt but the windshield and several wooden seats were damaged.

Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director, ordered Ali to deploy mobile patrols from the boundary of Shariff Kabunsuan and North Cotabato, up to Cotabato City to ensure the safety of commuters.

Weena cut short its operations from Davao to Kabacan, North Cotabato, due to security concerns and the increasing number of non-paying passengers.

After the firm extended its route to Midsayap, also in North Cotabato, last week, three of its buses were damaged when an improvised explosive device was set off.

While Weena, which fields air-conditioned buses, cut its route, four AVM buses continued to serve the Davao-Cotabato route.

Superintendent Danilo Bacas, ARMM police spokesman, said precautionary measures have been undertaken to protect Weena buses from further harassment.(Mindanao Bureau)
