The Palace spokesman said he will leave it to Philippine telecommunications companies and the Department of National Defense to act on reports that China mobile service is available in Ayungin Shoal. This, after reporters who visited Ayungin Shoal got a China Mobile prompt on their cellphones over the weekend.

"Well, we will just allow them to look into their own concerns; and if they wish, they can inform us of their findings. Our Department of National Defense will know what appropriate actions are needed. I supposed they have discussed [this] with the reporters concerns and they must have conducted some kind of debriefing exercises after their participation in the event."

Coloma also dismissed a question on whether there is a need for a United Nations peacekeeping force deployment.

"Tinitimbang naman natin ang sitwasyon. Pero pansinin naman natin na sa larangang 'yan nagkakaroon lang ng ganyang sitwasyon kapag ito ay isang bagay na inilahad na mismo sa United Nations General Assembly, saka lang nagte-take action 'yung UN. Sa ngayon naman ay hindi naman humahantong sa ganyang antas 'yung conflict na pinag-uusapan natin," he said. With Agence France-Presse

Coloma said bringing the matter before ITLOS is just one option that the Philippines is eyeing to settle the sea dispute.

He rebutted claims reportedly made by the China Foreign Ministry that the Philippines is using media hype when it brought reporters to Ayungin Shoal when it restocked its outpost over the weekend.

"Well, you yourselves will be able to determine if there is hype or exaggeration. I don't think we have hype or given excessive coverage to this matter. All that we did was to provide an opportunity for some members of media to see firsthand the situation. And they have reported it as they have seen it," he said.

Coloma said the Philippines can only rely on the power of diplomacy. The Philippines is perceived to have one of the weakest armed forces in the world.

The Palace official said there are several avenues for multilateral action including bringing the matter to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"As we know, the ASEAN in 2012 in the meeting there in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, agreed to flesh out the decade-old, more than decade-old declaration of the Code of Conduct. So there seems to be more willingness on the part of the affected member-nations to concretely spell out the parameters for addressing the issues in the South China Sea or in the West Philippine Sea," he said.

"We continue to engage our fellow ASEAN members, both bilaterally and multilaterally, that there must be an ASEAN -centric approach considering that there are overlapping expanded economic zones in the claims of the various member countries."

He also said there are other international bodies that are providing support such as the European Union and the European community. "So we will just continue to rely on expressions, manifestations and demonstrations of international solidarity."

Coloma said the West Philippine Sea does not represent the totality of the country's national interest or national security concerns.

Asked if the proposed increased rotational presence agreement between the Philippines and US will be part of the country's strategy in dealing with the territorial disputes with China, he said: "The agreement for enhanced defense cooperation between the Philippines and the US must be viewed within the context of the fact that the Philippines has strategic partnership with the United States."

"But that is to be viewed in the context of the totality of our defense and national security concerns not just at a single concern such as the West Philippine Sea."

The United States on Monday criticized China for being provocative after its coast guard tried to block a Philippine vessel that was rotating troops in the tense South China Sea.

State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters the Philippines had permission to resupply troops to the remote reef, the Second Thomas Shoal, because it has kept a naval presence there since before a 2002 declaration of conduct in the South China Sea.

President Aquino stood firm on the Philippine claim to the shoal, a day after his government filed a memorial before the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the arbitration case.

He, however, said he is not out to challenge China.

MANILA - President Aquino and US President Barack Obama may discuss tensions in the West Philippine Sea when the US leader swings by for a visit later this month.

This comes after the US State Department issued a statement saying that China's attempt to block a supply ship from reaching Ayungin Shoal was provocative.

Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said defense and security will definitely be a topic in the talks between President Aquino and President Obama.

"When you talk of this topic, the most relevant issue that can be discussed would be the West Philippine Sea so it is entirely within the realm of possibility. But, I believe, there are other issues that will be tackled since what is involved here is strategic partnership between two countries," he said.

She is proud of her Pinoy roots and she looks up to her mother as a good role model.

"She has so much strength and is always telling me to keep pushing myself. She's not a mum that would hold me back. She'd be like, 'whatever you want to do, you can do. Just go on that path'," she said.

More than 40 finalists from various parts of the world will appear in a fully choreographed, high-profile runway show.

Prizes for winners include professional runway training and career guidance, photo shoot opportunities, and media exposure.

Apart from the coveted title, the Pinay-Aussie also wants to win the Public Vote Awards where members of the public get to vote online for their favorite model.

"First off, you can go to the competition's website, which is www.topmodelworld.com. You go on the tab, 2014 Finalists, and they have a whole list of all the contestant, and I'm contestant number 6 - Madison V. There will be a picture of me so people won't get mixed up. You just click on my name and there's a whole list of instructions. Just follow that, it's simple," she said.

Vulic will be strutting the runways for the grand final show on April 5 at London Hilton Metropole.

LONDON â€" A 15-year old Filipino-Australian will be representing the Philippines in the sought-after international modeling competition "Top Model Worldwide".

Madison Vulic's mother is Filipina and her father is of European descent. She grew up in Australia but she chose to wave the flag of the Philippines in the competition.

"I wanted to represent the Philippines because they're more supportive and like, my mum's Filipino, and so I just chose to represent the Philippines," she said.

Early on, young Vulic already outclassed many girls her age. She excelled in the performing arts.

This is Vulic's first venture into the modeling world and she is determined to make her dream a reality.

"The way I think about it, I don't like to compare myself to others. This is a competition for me. I always concentrate on myself so it's much more easier for me to stay focused. I flew over here for this competition, just to get the exposure and also the experience and to meet new people. It would be great to just to feel like I've done something, achieved something if I just win an award," said Vulic.

After Saturday’s competition, Dellis plans to write a book on developing memorization skills and is launching his own memory competition, “The Extreme Memory Tournament” in San Diego this April. He won’t participate himself but instead wants to bring together past memory champions in a more audience-friendly competition.

“Everything will be head to head,” he said.

He’s less impressed by popular games and phone apps like Lumosity that promise to transform a person’s memory and cognitive abilities.

“I applaud their attempts to make it very approachable,” he said. “But I think there a lot of other ways to do that. Their memory side of things isn’t very robust.”

“There’s so much information coming at us,” he said. “So many apps and devices that take everything our brain used to do. We’ve lost a lot of our natural skill that we used to have.”

Dellis, who is trying to recapture the title after a surprising loss last year, says he was inspired to sharpen his memory after watching his grandmother suffer through Alzheimer’s disease. He’s since used his celebrity from the memory championships and his mountain climbing hobby, to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s.

“I remind people that when I first started I was not very good. You have to start somewhere,” he said. “Since then, it’s been that joint message of doing this for your own health and to raise awareness for others.”

Dellis offers a practical list for anyone who wants improve their own memorization abilities. And it’s surprisingly old-school for someone who hasn’t even turned 30.

“Start by memorizing grocery lists, people you meet,” he said. “Eat a lot of foods rich in omega 3, like salmon or other fish. And remember that the brain is a pretty vascular organ, so being physically active is great for the memory.”

He says there’s nothing magical to explain how he went from a mostly average young man to someone who can memorize an entire deck of cards in five minutes.

“It’s the same techniques but greater volume in terms of practice involved,” he said.

Competitors in the U.S. Memory Championship square off in four categories over the course of a roughly 10-hour day.

In the morning, the initial finalists are determined in a challenge to memorize names and faces. Contestants are asked to memorize a set of photos with attached names. They must then take only the names and correctly match them up with the corresponding photos. A single mistake can knock someone out of the competition.

In the second round, semi-finalists are given five minutes to memorize a series of numbers that randomly generate on a computer screen. The contestants literally rattle off the series of numbers until someone finally breaks. They’re also required to quickly memorize and recite poetry verses, dozens of words, and recalling personal information about a stranger.

After the field has been narrowed to three, the final contestants are given five minutes to memorize an entire deck of cards. The winner is determined after two of the other finalists make a mistake in sequencing the deck.

UPDATE: Dellis won his third U.S. Memory Championship title on Saturday. Original story begins below.

The 17th annual U.S. Memory Championship held in New York on Saturday is almost an anomaly in the age of disposable information and competitions built around who can eat the most hot dogs.

But two-time champion Nelson Dellis tells Yahoo News that the same routines he’s developed to become a memory champion work for anyone who wants to improve their mental health.

“Over this past five years I’ve focused on four key areas: keeping my mind active, eating the right foods, being active in physical fitness and surrounding myself with a strong social circle of friends and family,” Dellis, 28, said.

The disputes have periodically erupted into dangerous confrontations, sparking tensions and straining ties.

In the latest incident, a Philippine government ship slipped past a Chinese coast guard blockade Saturday and brought food and fresh troops to a navy ship marooned on Second Thomas Shoal. The ship is used as a base by Filipino troops to bolster the country's territorial claims in the area.

The mission was accomplished peacefully despite a radioed warning by the Chinese to the Filipinos to stop or "take full responsibility for the consequences of your action."

On March 9, Chinese vessels blocked a resupply mission to the shoal, called Ayungin by the Philippines.

Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza said the Philippines last month amended its statement of claim to include Ayungin Shoal as subject of arbitration. He said that the shoal is within the Philippines' 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone, and that the country has sovereign rights and jurisdiction over it.
#12742
In Washington, U.S. State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf backed the Philippines' action, saying "all countries should respect the right of any states party, including the Republic of the Philippines, to avail themselves of the dispute resolution mechanisms provided for under the Law of the Sea Convention."

"We hope that this case serves to provide greater legal certainty and compliance with the international law of the sea," she said in a statement. She reiterated a longstanding U.S. position that all parties refrain from taking unilateral actions that are "escalatory and destabilizing, to clarify their respective maritime and territorial claims in accordance with international law, and to commit to the peaceful management and resolution of disputes."

China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have overlapping claims across the busy South China Sea.

China has asked other claimants to settle the disputes through one-on-one negotiations, something that would give it advantage because of its sheer size and clout. It has also warned Washington not to get involved.

"With firm conviction, the ultimate purpose of the memorial is our national interest," del Rosario said. "It is about defending what is legitimately ours."

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" The Philippines presented evidence to an international tribunal against China's sweeping territorial claims in the South China Sea, ignoring Beijing's warning that the case will damage ties.

Filipino officials took their territorial disputes with China to international arbitration in January 2013, after Chinese government ships took control of a disputed shoal off the northwestern Philippines. They asked the tribunal to declare China's claims to about 80 percent of the strategic waters and Beijing's seizure of eight South China Sea shoals and reefs illegal.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said last week that China will never accept nor participate in the international arbitration pushed by the Philippines. He called on the Philippines "to stop going any further down the wrong track so as to avoid further damage to bilateral relations."

Newly discovered dwarf planet could challenge what we know about our solar system
BY JAMES TREW  @ITSTREW  MARCH 29TH 2014, AT 11:49:00 PM ET

While Pluto might have been stripped of its full planetary status, thanks to a shift in official definitions, a newly discovered planetoid could actually hint at the existence of a "super-Earth" in the far reaches of our solar system. The ball of rock and ice, known as 2012 VP113, is estimated to be 250 miles wide, and has the most distant known orbit of our sun -- currently around 7.7 billion miles, extending to around 42 billion at its farthest. 2012 VP113 was spotted using the Dark Energy Camera in Chile, after a series of time-lapse photos captured it moving across the night sky.

It's not the first (and probably not the last) object of notable size observed beyond the Kuiper belt -- Sedna was discovered in 2003, but until now had been pretty much a lone case. Exciting as this is, it's also thought that, given certain similarities in the angle of Sedna and 2012 VP113's orbit, that there might be a much larger planet lurking in the shadows pulling on them, yet to reveal itself. This, once more, could change what we know about our very own observable solar system. Time to revise those museum models again?

Boeke and his team are already working on synthesising other yeast chromosomes.

This, they wrote, “represents a major step towards the design and complete synthesis” of a eukaryotic genome.

“Rapid advances in synthetic biology coupled with ever decreasing costs of DNA synthesis suggest that it will soon become feasible to engineer new eukaryotic genomes, including plant and animal genomes with synthetic chromosomes encoding desired functions and... properties based on specific design principles.”

Greenpeace scientist Janet Cotter told AFP that genetically modified organisms could be useful, in drug development for instance, but in controlled conditions.

“In contained use, on a small scale in a lab, it’s absolutely fine. In a commercial situation, on a scale say for biofuels, then you run into problems about how you adequately and securely contain those organisms.”
#12754
Boeke and his team unravelled the coding of one of yeast’s 16 chromosomes, then used software to make changes to it - removing repetitive and less-used regions.

They then built a synthetic version of this altered chromosome from scratch, stringing together individual nucleotides - the chemical building blocks of the genes that make up chromosomes, which in turn comprise the genome.

“It is the most extensively altered chromosome ever built,” said Boeke.

“We have made over 50,000 changes to the DNA code in the chromosome and our yeast is still alive. That is remarkable.”

Yeast shares about a third of its 6,000 genes - units of the chromosome that carry the instructions for cell function - with humans.

“Their effort represents a critical step on the road to building an entire eukaryotic genome,” said a media summary from Science. “It could also help researchers learn more about genome biology - including how genomes are built, how they’re organised, and what makes them work.”

PARIS : Scientists have created the first man-made chromosome for a complex-celled organism - a feat hailed Friday as a big step towards acquiring the controversial ability to redesign plants or animals.

A synthetic chromosome was inserted into a brewer’s yeast cell, which functioned as normal - the key test of success, the international team reported in the journal Science. “Our research moves the needle in synthetic biology from theory to reality,” said Jef Boeke, director of the New York University’s Institute for Systems Genetics, who was a member of the research team.  Yeast is a closely-studied representative of the group of eukaryotes, organisms with complex cells that contain a nucleus and other structures enclosed within membranes. All plants and animals, including humans, have eukaryotic cells.

Chromosomes have previously been synthesised for bacteria, which are simpler, prokaryotic organisms. Yeast is used to make beer, biofuel and medicines, and researchers believe it can be made to work more efficiently with genetic modifications.

Military: Tiamzon couple’s love of pets did them in
http://cebudailynews.inquirer.net
By Chito O. Aragon
2:14 am | Friday, March 28th, 2014

One of the dogs left behind in the safehouse of the Tiamzons in San Fernando.

IT was the Tiamzon couple’s love of pets that led the military to the compound they rented in barangay Sangat in San Fernando town, southern Cebu last Saturday.

Lt. Gen. John Bonafos, commander of the AFP Central Command, yesterday presented to the media two dogs and a cat that were supposedly kept by Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, chairman and finance chief of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

The military decided to rename the two Shih Tzu dogs “Ben” and “Wilma” while the Persian cat will be named “Joma”, said Lt. Jim Aris Alagao, Centcom spokesman.

Joma is Jose Ma. Sison, the exiled leader of the CPP.

Probable cause

Bonafos said the Tiamzons had 10 petsâ€"an additional four dogs and three cats. The other pets were in the couple’s safe house in Barangay Sangat, San Fernando, in southern Cebu, which was raided by the CIDG-7 on Tuesday. The raiders did not take the pets with them.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday said it had found probable cause to indict the Tiamzon couple, Joel Enano Escandor, Arlene Panea, Rex Villaflor, Nona “Lorraine” Castillo and Jeosi Nepa on charges of illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

The DOJ is expected to file the information against the seven in a Cebu court Friday.â€"With reports from Marlon Ramos and Christine O. Avendaño

Not arrested

Asked if the pets were under arrest, Bonafos replied laughing, “Of course not.”

“We are taking care of them. If we neglect them, we might be charged with violating animal rights,” he said in Filipino.

He said the pets could be returned to the Tiamzons, “but as of now we have adopted them.”

However, the cost of feeding the pets was rather high, more than the P500 combat pay of a soldier and, presumably, the kind of food eaten by the communist rebels in the mountains, Bonafos said.

The Tiamzon’s pets are fed the “Royal Canine” brand of pet food, which costs P2,000 per pack. Each pet consumes one pack per month, said Bonafos.

If the Tiamzons spent P2,000 per month per pet, it means the food consumption of the three pets reached P14,000 per month.

Bonafos said the military’s K-9 unit is taking care of them and continues to feed them with the same expensive dog food brand. The budget is taken from the allocation of the K-9 unit, he said.

Bonafos said the Tiamzons’ well-known love for pets was one of the clues that led intelligence agents to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army chair and his wife.

He said the agents received tips about a couple in Barangay Sangat with so many pets who did not mingle with their neighbors.

“The information didn’t come from the military and the Philippine National Police but from the people,” he said.
#12759
The pets were with the Tiamzons and five other people in a Toyota Innova and Hyundai Starex when they were arrested at a checkpoint in Barangay (village) Zaragosa, Aloguinsan town, on Saturday.

Bonafos denied the claim of the Tiamzons’ lawyers that only the pets were recovered from the vehicles.
He said firearms, ammunition, a laptop, 19 USBs and cellular phones were also found.

All of the evidence collected are with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7)â€"except the two dogs and one cat which remained with Centcom.

The dogs are Shih-Tzus. One is all black while the other is white with black patterns. The cat, a Persian, is mostly black with little white spots on the face.

The pets were presented at a news conference at the Centcom office in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Barangay Lahug, here on Thursday.

The pets of Communist Party of the Philippines chairman Benito Tiamzon and his wife Wilma were presented to the media on Thursday at the Central Command in Cebu. The pets were with the couple during their arrest on March 22.

CEBU CITY, Philippinesâ€"The military has adopted two dogs and a cat belonging to captured communist leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, saying they can be turned into “peaceful pets.”

“Since they are now in our custody, there is nothing wrong if we take care of them. Maybe they will become peaceful pets, they are now also peaceful and development-ready,” said Maj. Gen. John Bonafos, chief of the Armed Forces Central Command (Centcom).

Ok ra ming naa sa banda kon mag long hair mi kay kabahin man na sa among image isip mga kutoon. Way motuog presidente nga kutoon.

As a teacher with many years of experience, I am ashamed but also angry when I read of fellow teachers behaving in such a narrow-minded and cruel way. Teaching should be about helping kids fulfill themselves, not about putting them down and making them feel bad.

As Heather L. Weaver, senior staff attorney for the ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief, put it: “The treatment this child and his family have endured is not only disgraceful, it’s unconstitutional.”

“Public schools should be welcoming places for students of all backgrounds,” said Marjorie Esman, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana. “No child should be harassed and made to feel like an outsider in his own classroom, and students should not have to endure school officials constantly imposing their religious beliefs on them while they are trying to learn.”

In case you’re wondering how a public school, funded by tax dollars can be pushing one religion, you should know that this situation is not unusual in Louisiana. Last year, the state decided to fix its failing public education system by offering parents vouchers to nearby private schools instead. Many of these schools are private religious institutions, meaning that other non-Christian students may find themselves having to sit through classes that criticize homosexuality and evolution, classes that are funded by tax dollars.

When Scott and Sharon Lane, C.C.’s parents, confronted Sabine Parish Superintendent Sara Ebarb about the incidents, she allegedly told them “this is the Bible belt” and that they “shouldn’t be offended” to “see God here.” Ebarb advised that C.C. should either change his faith or be transferred to another district school where “there are more Asians.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Louisiana filed a federal lawsuit in January against Negreet High School in Sabine Parish on behalf of the Lanes and their son.

Thankfully, Judge Elizabeth Foote of the U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana sided with C.C. and his parents, citing that both Roark’s behavior and the school’s decision to defend it clearly violated “the Free Exercise and Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.”

Judge Foote wrote that “[t]he District and School Board are permanently enjoined from permitting School Officials at any school within the School District to promote their personal religious beliefs to students in class or during or in conjunction with a School Event.” Furthermore, “School Officials shall not denigrate any particular faith, or lack thereof, or single out any student for disfavor or criticism because of his or her particular faith or religious belief, or lack thereof.”

Too bad that Rita Roark did not lose her job over this incident. Clearly, some people who call themselves teachers should not be allowed anywhere near young people.

Excellent news! The parents of a sixth grade student in Louisiana whose teacher made fun of him because he is Buddhist have won their lawsuit against the school district.

In the past, Rita Roark had told her students that the universe was created by God about 6,000 years ago and informed them that both the Big Bang theory and evolution are false. She told her students that, “If evolution was real, it would still be happening: Apes would be turning into humans today.”

This level of ignorance makes me wonder if this woman is actually a credentialed teacher.

One test she gave to students asked: “ISN’T IT AMAZING WHAT THE _____________ HAS MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” The correct answer was “Lord,” but one child, known simply as “C.C.,” wrote in something else.

When informed that C.C. was a Buddhist and therefore didn’t believe in God, Roark allegedly responded, “you’re stupid if you don’t believe in God.”

World Daily News / Re: Sri Lanka War Crimes Inquiry
March 28, 2014, 02:20:03 PM
Ambassador Zamir Akram of Pakistan said, “This resolution is about politics, not about human rights.” He moved to delay the vote on the grounds that the human rights office lacked the resources to carry out the investigation, and then proposed to delete a reference to an independent investigation.

India, which had supported tamer resolutions on Sri Lanka’s war in the last two years, backed both proposals, but abstained from the vote on Thursday, saying it was concerned about the creation of an external investigation with an open-ended mandate.

The focus of the investigation will be the carnage that unfolded in the military campaign at the end of the war, a time when up to 40,000 civilians are reported to have died, mainly as a result of heavy military bombardment of areas in which the military had encouraged them to assemble.

But the resolution also expresses concern about what the United States has said is the continuing deterioration of human rights in Sri Lanka, including continuing abductions, torture and extrajudicial killings, and it calls on the human rights office to continue monitoring and reporting on Sri Lanka.

Thursday’s vote was the culmination of years of mounting international pressure for a credible investigation. Two months after the war ended, the Human Rights Council passed a resolution commending Sri Lanka’s actions in ending it.

An independent international inquiry is “long overdue,” Julie de Rivero, Geneva advocacy director for Human Rights Watch, said after the vote. “It will shed light once and for all on the atrocities that took place during the last phase of the war in Sri Lanka,” she added, and represents an essential step to hold both sides to account.

Thursday’s vote came after Sri Lanka’s ambassador to the council, Ravinatha Aryasinha, protested that the resolution represented “a grave threat to the sovereignty of U.N. member states” and breached international law.

U.N. Approves Investigation of Civil War in Sri Lanka
By NICK CUMMING-BRUCEMARCH 27, 2014

GENEVA â€" Overriding fierce objections from Sri Lanka, the United Nations Human Rights Council voted on Thursday to open an international investigation into possible war crimes by both the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels in the final stages of a 26-year civil war that ended in 2009.

The council’s 47 members voted 23 to 12 with 12 abstentions in favor of a resolution sponsored by a core group of nations, including the United States, that calls on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to conduct a comprehensive investigation into allegations of serious violations and abuses of human rights by both sides.

The high commissioner, Navi Pillay, had urged the creation of an independent inquiry on the grounds that the Sri Lankan authorities had made little progress in investigating possible war crimes during the military operations that crushed the Tamil Tigers’ brutal rebellion to establish a homeland five years ago.

That lack of progress, Ms. Pillay added pointedly in a report to the council in February, is “fundamentally a question of political will.” Sri Lankan investigations of the military’s actions lack independence and credibility, she added.

Spain pays last respects to Adolfo Suárez with three days of mourning
PM and other political leaders join King Juan Carlos as body lies in state at parliament building in Madrid

King Juan Carlos joined politicians in parliament on Monday to pay their last respects to Adolfo Suárez, the country's first democratically elected prime minister following decades of right-wing rule under General Francisco Franco.

Prime minister Mariano Rajoy and other political leaders stood outside the parliament building as soldiers brought in Suárez's coffin to a slow and solemn drum beat. Flags flew at half-staff as Spain held three days of mourning for one of the key architects of Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy in the 1970s. In his honour, the government announced that Madrid's Barajas airport would now be called Adolfo Suárez, Madrid-Barajas airport.

In the parliament, the king laid a Royal Order of Carlos III gold chain, Spain's highest civilian award, close to the coffin before expressing his condolences to Suárez's family.

Suárez's body lay in state on Monday before a burial on Tuesday in Avila, 60 miles north-west of the capital.

Suárez died on Sunday in a Madrid hospital aged 81. He had had Alzheimer's disease for a decade. In 1976, the king chose Suárez to guide the country towards a democratic parliamentary monarchy after Franco's death a year earlier. He was prime minister until 1981 and retired from politics in 1991.
