Ex-US admiral: 'Equally forceful' Philippines needed in sea row

By Camille Diola (philstar.com)
June 27, 2014

Dennis Blair, then United States Director of National Intelligence, speaks at the World Affairs Council in Philadelphia in November 2009. WACPhiladelphia

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Philippines has to stand up to China's gray-zone challenges in the hotly contested South China Sea, instead of only reacting to its behavior.

Dennis Blair, retired chief of the United States Pacific Command and former Director of National Intelligence, said the Philippines, Japan and Vietnam "can't just sit there" and watch as China encroaches in what they consider sovereign territories.

Complications of fasting

Health complications associated with fast-induced starvation include electrolyte imbalances, thinning hair, lanugo, potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias and renal failure. Death occurs if fasting is pursued to the point of complete starvation.

Changes in blood chemistry during fasting, in combination with certain medications, may have dangerous effects, such as increased chance of acetaminophen poisoning. Excessive fasting for calorie restrictive purposes, accompanied by intense fears of becoming overweight, are associated with mental disturbances, including anorexia nervosa.

Also adherence to Eastern Orthodox fasting periods contributes to an improvement in the blood lipid profile, including a decrease in total and LDL cholesterol, and a decrease in the LDL to HDL cholesterol ratio. These results suggest a possible positive impact on the obesity levels of individuals who adhere to these fasting periods.

In terms of cancer risk, there is no human evidence to date of the effects of fasting. However, animal studies found decreases in lymphoma incidence, longer survival after tumor inoculation, and lower rates of proliferation of several cell types.

Research by Valter Longo and others suggests a potential link between fasting and improved efficacy of chemotherapy.

According to the study conducted by Dr. Eric Ravussin, "Alternate-day fasting may be an alternative to prolonged diet restriction for increasing the life span".

A team of cardiologists in the UAE found that people observing Ramadan, the Islamic 30-days of fasting through the daylight hours (with meals after sunset and before sunrise) do not lose weight, yet enjoy a positive effect on their lipid profile, which means there is a reduction of LDL cholesterol in the blood.

Benefits of Fasting

According to Dr. Mark P. Mattson, chief of the laboratory of neurosciences at the US National Institute on Aging, fasting every other day (intermittent fasting) shows beneficial effects in mice as strong as those of caloric-restriction diets, and a small study conducted on humans at the University of Illinois at Chicago indicates the same results.

According to the US National Academy of Sciences, other health benefits include stress resistance, increased insulin sensitivity, reduced morbidity, and increased life span. Long-term studies in humans have not been conducted. However, short-term human trials showed weight loss. The side effect was that the participants felt cranky during the three-week trial.

While banned Uruguay striker Luis Suarez might have been the talk of the match beforehand, 22-year-old Rodriguez was the name on everyone's lips at the Maracana at the end after scoring a truly stunning opening goal after 28 minutes and becoming the tournament's top scorer after 50 minutes with his fifth goal in four games.

The Catholic News Agency reported that the family held up signs asking Francis to stop and see Roberta.

Roberta, whose last name was not reported, is unable to travel far from home and depends on a machine to help her breathe, according to news.va.

After the encounter, friends and family of Roberta posted their thoughts on Facebook. One friend, Ivan Vania, wrote, “it was very emotional to see how Pope Francis greeted Roberta ... there are gestures in life that are worth more than speeches, much more than you would think ... Pope Francis is unique," according to the Daily Dot.

Of course, this isn't the first suave move we've seen from Francis. He once invited a boy with Down syndrome to take a spin in the popemobile.  He embraced a man with a very disfigured face. And he's washed the feet of kids in jail during a Holy Week ceremony. Keep that in mind the next time you think twice about holding the door for that old lady walking out of the grocery story behind you.

Pope Francis stops his car to kiss, bless disabled woman in Italy

By Mike Krumboltz
June 25 2014
Yahoo News

Here's something you don't see every day.

While being driven through southern Italy, Pope Francis saw a disabled woman and her family on the side of the road, waiting to catch a glimpse of his motorcade.

Francis asked his driver to stop the modest blue hatchback he was riding in. He exited the car (opening his own door, like a boss), approached the family, and then blessed and kissed the woman, named Roberta, who was lying on a stretcher.

Cheers of "bravo" and "grazie" can be heard in the background.

Italy 0-1 Uruguay: Luis Suarez mars win after appearing to bite Giorgio Chiellini during Group D showdown

By Ian Ladyman
24 June 2014

Chomping at the bit: Luis Suarez appears to bite Giorgio Chiellini during the Group D showdown

Luis Suarez's reputation lies in tatters again after the Liverpool striker appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s bad-tempered victory in Natal.

With just 12 minutes to go and the scores locked at 0-0 here, Suarez and Chiellini fell to the floor in the penalty area. Chiellini seemed absolutely incensed and replays soon showed why as Suarez was shown apparently attempting to dig his teeth in his opponents’ shoulder.

Uruguay went on to win the game 1-0 with a goal soon after from captain Diego Godin. They progress to the second phase at Italy’s expense.

5. Anything in a Can

Canned foods can help make getting dinner together an easier task, but when you buy canned food you’re getting a lot more than just food that is not particularly fresh. Canned foods are full of preservatives, salt, and the dangerous chemical BPA. BPA has been found to be carcinogenic, cause reproductive health issues, and cause heart disease. Not the kind of health choices you want to trade in order to make life a little bit easier by not preparing fresh vegetables.

http://www.lifegooroo.com/
#12396
4. Salt

Salt that you buy to fill your table’s salt shaker is not all pure salt: the rest of it is made up of toxic chemicals. Sea salt has even worse percentages of sodium chloride to other chemicals. Ferrocyanide and silicon are not things that your body needs. Keep this in mind when you sprinkle some salt into your dish. Salt is necessary for your body, but it’s going to come with added risks.
#12397
3. Artificial Sweeteners

So to avoid sugar you decide to use an artificial sweetener. Big mistake. Artificial sweeteners contain aspartame, a highly scrutinized sugar substitute. Aspartame is processed by the body into formaldehydeâ€"yes, the same chemical that is used to preserve dead bodiesâ€"which is something that in large enough amounts can damage your DNA.
#12398
2. Sugar

Sugar is bad for more than just your teeth. Your hormones, immune system, your weight and the amount of important minerals in your body are all negatively affected by sugar. When sugar gets into your body it starts to actively waste away the nutrients in your systemâ€"it kills the things your body needs, like calcium. What’s worse, sugar is almost impossible to avoid, even if you aren’t adding it to your cup of coffee in the morning. This makes sugar probably the most sinister food on this list.
#12399
1. Margarine

Years of low-fat diet eating advice that told us that we should avoid butter and replace it with margarine turned out to be the worst advice possible. Trans-fats are one of margarine’s worst offenders, but the butter substitute also comes packed with dangerous preservatives, emulsifiers and free radicals. Avoid the dated health advice and stick to butter: it contains essential fats that our bodies need, and disease-fighting benefits too.

5 Foods You Should Not Even Think About Eating

Did you know that the supermarket foods that are found in most refrigerators and cupboards today are actually full of hidden health threats? Every time you eat foods without considering their health consequences you are putting your body and life at risk. We may even try to make healthy choices that still wind up doing ourselves harm by eating the wrong foods. The easiest way to tell if a food is good for you or not is how fresh it is. Stay away from packaging and try to go organic as much as possible. Lifegooroo is here to help with this list of five foods that you should not even think about eating.
