France lay down World Cup marker with drubbing of Switzerland

Friday 20 June 2014

Any notion that the World Cup is turning into a tournament for the smaller nations was banished when Switzerland received their comeuppance from France, a 5-2 scoreline and a defeat that could easily have been heavier making a mockery of Fifa world rankings that currently have the Swiss at six and the French at 17th.

Scorer of the opening goal and architect of the third with a blistering length of the field sprint that might have come as a surprise to some of his critics at Arsenal, Olivier Giroud was the stand-out performer in an impressive French side reshaped by Didier Deschamps since the opening victory over Honduras. Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann were stood down, the former thought to have incurred his coach’s displeasure with his reaction to being fouled in the first game by Wilson Palacios.

Enner Valencia’s double takes Ecuador beyond Honduras

Enner Valencia is now joint top scorer at the World Cup after scoring two goals for Ecuador against Honduras. Photograph: CJ Gunther/EPA

by Sid Lowe in Curitiba
Saturday 21 June 2014

“Yes, we can,” they sang and Ecuador could. They emerged battered and bruised but not beaten from a breathless battle in Curitiba. A cruel 93rd-minute goal had condemned Ecuador to an opening-match defeat against Switzerland and they fell behind here too. But two goals from Enner Valencia meant they still have hopes of progressing. And at the full-time whistle there was a huge roar and embraces on the touchline.

Ecuador, like Switzerland, have three points but they lead their European opponents on goal difference. The problem is that they face the leaders, France, while Switzerland take on Honduras, who lie bottom. Yet that will not be simple for the French; Honduras put up a fight here.

Argentina through after Lionel Messi breaks battling Iran at the last

Barney Ronay in Belo Horizonte
Saturday 21 June 2014

What a World Cup this is turning out to be, when even a 1-0 win can have a ring of something quietly sensational about it. In Belo Horizonte, Iran produced a stirring performance against an Argentina team of all the attacking talents, at first sitting deep and defending like trench-bound soldiers, then coming out in the second half to cause problems of their own down Argentina’s vulnerable flanks, not least with four minutes left when Reza Ghoochannejhad sprinted on to a fine long pass after an Argentina corner and almost scored what might have been a sensational winning goal.

Football can be cruel though and, with the game in stoppage time, it was Lionel Messi who scored the winning goal, a reward for persistence to the last as he jinked inside after a relatively quite game and produced out of his back pocket a sublime left-foot shot that found the far corner. It was cruel for Iran against an Argentina team who were poor for much of the second half, lacking invention and incision against a supremely well-arranged defence and midfield. Genius, though, does come in handy on these occasions.

Germany vs. Ghana: Live Score, Highlights for World Cup 2014 Group G Game

By Ken Chin , Social Media Staff
Jun 21, 2014

We just witnessed one of the best matches of this 2014 World Cup!

Germany and Ghana battled to a 2-2 stalemate after Germany opened the scoring with a beautiful header from Mario Götze, but Ghana answered right back with back-to-back goals from Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan.

Miroslav Klose came on as a second-half sub and made an immediate impact with the equalizer in the 71st minute, scoring his 15th career World Cup goal which ties Brazil's Ronaldo for most all-time.

This result opens up Group G, and sets up the US team to advance with a win vs. Portugal on Sunday.

Germany faces off with the United States on Thursday in their Group G finale, while Ghana looks to salvage a result vs. Portugal and advance into the knockout stage.

World Cup 2014: Miroslav Klose equals World Cup scoring record

By Ben Smith BBC Sport in Fortaleza
22 June 2014

When the moment came, Miroslav Klose was ready.

One outstretched right boot, one simple tap-in, was all it took to score a goal that sealed his place in the World Cup annals.

The goal was typical of Klose - it wasn't spectacular; but it was instinctive and, above all, important.

It arrived with Germany trailing Ghana 2-1 and only 19 minutes left to play in a pulsating Group G match.

Benedikt Howedes's header might have been going in; it might have struck the post. Klose wasn't going to take the chance. The 36-year-old had only been on the field for 112 seconds and had not yet touched the ball. But his instincts were sharp, and his anticipation took him beyond the defence to prod in from a yard.

As he turned away to celebrate, arms outstretched, it might have taken a moment for the significance of the goal to sink in. Those who know him say the team always comes first, but a record-equalling 15th goal in World Cup finals had been on his radar.

That the goal came against Ghana was a neat piece of symmetry because Ronaldo - the Brazil legend whose record the German has matched - had scored his last World Cup goal against the same opponents in 2006.

Ronaldo has been all too aware of the possibility of losing his record.

He spoke at a fans' festival in Fortaleza only last week, and his message to the Brazilian fans was clear. "I have one big favour to ask of you," he said. "Please cast a tiny spell on Miroslav Klose. That would be good, so that Klose scores no goals."

Whether or not his record is surpassed, Ronaldo will always be considered one of the greats of the modern game. Klose, despite this accomplishment, will not.

And yet the Lazio striker is breaking records that great players of the game have set. He joins Pele and Uwe Seeler as the third man to score at four World Cups. He has surpassed the great Gerd Muller as Germany's leading scorer with 70 goals. And significantly, Germany have never lost when he has found the net.

Germany's Miroslav Klose scores

Klose has been dubbed as modest, unspectacular, and a striker that defenders say they need not worry about.

Stunning picture alert!

If anything sums up the pain of surrendering a lead at the World Cup, it is this brilliant image of Ghana goalkeeper Dauda with the German's celebrating in the background.

10 minutes to play in Fortaleza, the game calming down a little, what a crazy second half it has been. I've got a feeling Germany will take a draw, but Ghana have showed that Low's side aren't exactly solid.

Klose is really humble and to think he is only worth 1 million Euro as to his performance.

Miroslav Klose

With five goals, he was the top scorer and Golden Boot winner at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the first German player to win the award since the reunification.

Klose also scored five goals in his debut World Cup, the 2002 World Cup, all of which were headers. He scored four times in the 2010 World Cup, and has one time thus far in the 2014 World Cup, giving him a total of 15 World Cup goals. This total tied Klose for the most goals scored in the FIFA World Cup with Ronaldo of Brazil.

Klose is also one of only two players, along with Peruvian Teófilo Cubillas, to have scored at least five goals in two different World Cups, as well as the only player to have scored at least four in three different tournaments. --Wiki

USA vs. Portugal: World Cup Group G Score, Grades and Post-Match Reaction

By
Michael Cummings, World Football Lead Writer
June 23, 2014

The United States kept Cristiano Ronaldo under wraps for more than 94 minutes at the Arena Amazonia. But it was the 95th minute that broke the Americans' hearts.

Ronaldo set up the tying goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Portugal rescued a 2-2 draw against the U.S. in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Group G match in Manaus, Brazil.

Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey scored second-half goals as the U.S. overturned Nani's fifth-minute opener for Portugal. But with the Americans seconds away from victory—and a spot in the knockout round—Ronaldo curled a perfect cross to the back post for substitute Silvestre Varela to head in and keep Portugal alive.

By Mandeep Sanghera BBC Sport

Algeria moved up to second in World Cup Group H as they overcame South Korea in a six-goal thriller in Porto Alegre.

Islam Slimani ran onto a long ball to flick in the first and a Rafick Halliche header put Algeria 2-0 up.

Abdelmoumene Djabou sidefooted in a third, before Song Heung-min's low shot pulled one back as South Korea rallied.

Yacine Brahimi added Algeria's fourth and, despite Koo Ja-cheol scoring a second for Korea, Algeria held on for their first World Cup win since 1982.

Algeria, narrowly beaten by group leaders Belgium in their opening game, knew a second defeat would end their hopes of getting out of the group stage for the first time. They responded in emphatic fashion, becoming the first African team to score four goals in a World Cup game.

Belgium substitute Divock Origi grabbed a winner two minutes from time against Russia to take his side into the last 16.

Alexander Kokorin missed the best chance of a lifeless opening half, heading wide from six yards.

Substitute Kevin Mirallas hit a post with Belgium's first shot on target with six minutes remaining.

"On the balance of play, Belgium do not deserve it, but Marc Wilmots will say, 'We have six points from two games, we are growing into this tournament'. But they have been poor. They will not go far."

But Origi turned in from Eden Hazard's cross to take Marc Wilmots' team into the knock-out phase.

Russia's hopes of following them into the last 16 now hinge on their final group match against Algeria.

Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots jumps for joy after his side snatched a vital win. Picture: Getty

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots:

"[Origi] is in a good space right now. He's 19 years old. It was a bit of a surprise since he was an unknown before I selected him. Now everyone knows who he is.

"It was a hard game because the Russians were expecting us - the players were tired, it was hot, the Russians were already cramping up after 60 minutes.

"It was not an easy match but I think we deserved to win it."

Capello's Russia's hopes hinge on their final match against South Korea

Russia manager Fabio Capello:

"I am very happy with the performance the team and I thought the result was unfair.

"The truth of the matter is we had chances to win it but we lost. Both teams gave it their all and unfortunately it was Belgium that was able to make it.

"We have to look forward and I said when we came to play in this World Cup after being absent for 12 years that this will be a great help for us to understand the level we need to be at in future competitions."

Italy 0-1 Uruguay: Luis Suarez mars win after appearing to bite Giorgio Chiellini during Group D showdown

By Ian Ladyman
24 June 2014

Chomping at the bit: Luis Suarez appears to bite Giorgio Chiellini during the Group D showdown

Luis Suarez's reputation lies in tatters again after the Liverpool striker appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s bad-tempered victory in Natal.

With just 12 minutes to go and the scores locked at 0-0 here, Suarez and Chiellini fell to the floor in the penalty area. Chiellini seemed absolutely incensed and replays soon showed why as Suarez was shown apparently attempting to dig his teeth in his opponents’ shoulder.

Uruguay went on to win the game 1-0 with a goal soon after from captain Diego Godin. They progress to the second phase at Italy’s expense.

Former Boxing champion Evander Holyfield (Mike Tyson’s bite victim) hopes for forgiveness with Luis Suarez [Video]
Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

Former Boxing champion Evander Holyfield (Mike Tysons bite victim) hopes for forgiveness with Luis Suarez [Video]Former Heavyweight boxer Evander Holyfield, who was the victim of a bite on the ear from Mike Tyson in 1996, has weighed in on the Luis Suarez bite situation.

Holyfield lost a chunk of flesh from his ear when Iron Mike Tyson gnawed into him during their ’96 Heavyweight clash, so he knows a thing or two about the subject.

Holyfield tweeted about the incident when it happened, and was invited onto CNN to talk about it.

Holyfield said biting is just another form of violent reaction – albeit an unorthodox one – when things don’t go a competitor’s weigh; they lose control and lash out.

The boxer, though, pleaded almost evangelically for forgiveness with Suarez, saying, ‘Forgiveness keeps you from doing it back to someone’.
