In China, Rain Comes When Beijing Says So! - Skeptics argue otherwise
By: Gabriel Gache, Science News Editor

Image of a cloud seeding rocket launcher

When the rain dance fails, turn to cloud seeding, say the Chinese officials. With the imminent approach of the 2008 Olympics, Beijing is seriously taking into consideration the use of technology to clear pollution in the city and inhibit the rain from falling from the sky when it is not required, which basically means total weather control, a feat of engineering never attempted before by man. According to international reports, China has in plan the spending of 40 billion US dollars only to remake the infrastructure of the capital city, with about 100 million dollars spent each year in the rainmaking technology.

A rainmaking installation has already been created in the outskirts of Beijing, where anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers have been heavily modified to accommodate rocket firing silver iodide into clouds in order to determine the fall of precipitation. In these conditions, the Chinese officials promise that there will be no rain during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics.

Wang Yubin of the Beijing Meteorological Bureau personally promises that no precipitations will take place during the opening and the closing ceremonies of the Olympics, as they just have to solve small problems related to the time and place where the process must take place. Thus, more than 6,781 artillery guns and 4,110 rocket launchers have been adapted for the the job of bringing or keeping the rain away in certain regions of the country. During the period between 1995 and 2003, China's Meteorological Administration has conducted about 4,231 cloud seeding procedures, which led to an increase in precipitation fall equivalent to 210 billion cubic meters of water in the benefit of 400 million people.

No wonder their neighbors accused them of highjacking their clouds!

Even so, skeptical scientists express concern in relation to the claims made by China. For example, US National Center for Atmospheric Research meteorologist Dr. Roelof Bruintjes argue that the odds of preventing a potential rain fall is overestimated by Beijing officials. "Chasing away the rain is not so easy as the Chinese scientists say, nor bringing rain", says Dr. Bruintjes.

The Olympics will take place from 8 to 24 August, a period of the year that has very high temperatures and heavy rainfall, reaching up to 18 centimeters of rain during a typical year! However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the Chinese will fail in achieving their goals, neither will it be the first time when a weird approach is put into action by Chinese scientists and is unsuccessful.

One of the best examples took place only a few days ago. While the Chinese officials were releasing a press statement related to the weather controlling capabilities of the country, certain regions of its territory were going through the worst snow storm in the last five decades. Secondly, deputy director of the Research Center for Weather Modification, Wang Guanghe, himself recognized that they did not base their claims on solid scientific evidence, as no studies related to cloud seeding had ever been conducted by Chinese scientists.

Further still, American programs running in the states of Oklahoma and Texas reported little or no evidence that cloud seeding even works. Usually, the chemical of choice for cloud seeding is silver iodine, a harmless chemical compound, but liquid nitrogen or dry ice should work just as well. The Chinese government says that the same approach would be used to clear the air of pollutants before important events, but the fact is that pollution actually inhibits the rainfall thus triggering a possible severe drought.

The Breast Massage Robot - Men out of business
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

I understand that robots should replace men in tasks that are difficult, boring, discomfort inducing, dangerous or in which they are simply better. But what this robot does should have been a man's pleasure. It's about the Breast Massage Robot.

The device is claimed to deliver a comfortable human-free massage session and, unlike the bras, the portable Breast Massage Robot simulates the professional massager's hand movements while automatically adjusting itself to fit various breast shapes and sizes. Women can even choose from various programs fitting their demands. The Breast Massage Robot has been developed by Wang Wei, founder and proprietor of Beijing BUBBY Robot Technologies CO., LTD.

What are targets of the robot? The producer specifies:

"1.Girls who are reaching or having reached puberty, hope to improve the growth of breast.

2.Women who received surgery in the breast, desire to have a faster and better recovery.

3.Mothers, who are nursing babies, want to release the pain and to accelerate the secretion of breast milk.

4.Female who is having the period, want to release the swelling pain of breasts.

5.Women who want to lower the incidence of mastopathies (noncancerous lumps in the breast).

6.Women, who are under pressure, want to relax themselves.

7.Women who want to improve the quality of their sex activities.

8.Women who want to have pretty breasts."

The Breast Massage Robot

The device is "expected to be filling market vacancy and in great demand", as the producers warn us that 7% of the women experience mastopathies in the developed countries and 11% experience mastocirrhus (scirrhous carcinoma of the breast). Moreover, it is scientifically proven that the massage performed on pregnant women’s breasts help them give birth to their babies. Indeed, a great invention. We just can't wait for the robot that caresses your a** while having sex or whispering sweet words to women meanwhile.

The Woman with Feet Facing Backwards - From China
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Wang Fang

Disability or the secret for a high velocity? This Chinese waitress has not accepted a disability pension even if she was born with feet facing the other side.

Wang Fang, 27, is a resident of Chongqing (western China) and says she has been able to live a normal life despite her condition, and she is perfectly capable of accomplishing her job duties.

"I can run faster than most of my friends and have a regular job as a waitress in the family restaurant. There is no reason to class me as disabled," said Wang.

When Wang Fang was born, doctors were concerned that she could not be able to walk normally, but her family says not only she can walk normally, but she can actually outrun most of them.

Wang is a mother of a five-year-old boy and, for sure, a brave woman, not interested in sympathy or benefits. "I can walk as well as anyone else, and even run faster than them. I'm like everyone else - except of course that I put my shoes on backwards," said Wang.

These Chinese women can really come with amazing capacities of overcoming disabilities. Last year, a 77-year-old Chinese grandmother
shocked the doctors when they found a 1-inch (2.4 cm)-long bullet located in her brain! Jin Guangying, living in Shuyang town, Jiangsu province, received the bullet when she was shot by Japanese army troops in 1943, during the Second World War, 64 years ago. The 13-year-old girl survived due to the intense care of her mother, which applied her a herbal treatment, but the bullet went undetected and the war wound was forgotten. All her life, she experienced periodic headaches and fits, till the X-ray technology revealed the cause. The doctors safely extracted the bullet.

Also, in 2007, a 39-year-old Chinese woman was found to have just half a brain! Moreover, the woman from Wuhan city (eastern China) bears a completely normal life and only visited the hospital when she felt weak and stiff, but she lacks the left hemisphere of her brain. She even graduated high school with good marks and her memory is excellent.

How Many North Poles Does the Earth Have? - Enough to confuse you!
By: Gabriel Gache, Science News Editor - Softpedia

North Pole?

You got the point, apparently the Earth has more than one North Pole! I'll put it like this: the North Pole can be anywhere you want it to be. It could be in Alaska, in the town called 'North Pole' for what I'm concerned, but then we would be deviating away from the story. For starters, there is the geographic north of the planet which represents the intersection of the imaginary lines we call meridians, located somewhere in the Arctic Ocean.

Secondly, we have the instantaneous north pole which is basically the point on the surface of the Earth where the rotational axis of the Earth meets the ground. However, even this instantaneous north pole does not have a fixed location, due to the Earth revolution around the Sun. The instantaneous north pole describes a circle of the planets surface, called the Chandler wobble, which has as center the point called the north pole of balance.

Then there is the magnetic north pole of the planet. This is determined by a magnetic field generated by the movement of fluid inside the core's planet. This magnetic field generates two locations on the surface of the planet, north and south, which, as you already know, can be easily determined with the help of a magnetic compass. Magnetic lines penetrate through the mass of the planet and emerge to the surface in a vertical pattern, only to form closed loops high above the planet's surface. Meaning that, if one were to stand directly over the magnetic north pole, the needle of the compass would point in a vertical direction.

A secondary magnetic pole, is the north geomagnetic pole, totally different from the true magnetic north pole which lies somewhere in Canada â€" opposing to general belief which states that the magnetic north pole lies in the geographic north pole. The north geomagnetic pole is a remnant of the variable magnetic fields of our planet, is much weaker than the magnetic north pole and is located in Greenland, fact which led to numerous confusions in the past.

And, to complicate things even further, one should probably know that the Earth's magnetic north pole is not stable. In fact, there is evidence that the magnetic north and south pole shift places frequently. Since 1973, the magnetic north pole accelerated its movement from 10 to 50 kilometers per year and seems to follow a direction which will most likely take it from Canada towards the Siberian regions of Russia.

One more confusing fact. Why does the north pole of the needle of the compass tend to be attracted towards the north pole of the Earth? We were thought, in school, that identical poles repel each other, while different ones experience a force of attraction. As it turns out, it's just a matter of speaking. That's why many people have suggested that the magnetic north pole of our planet should be renamed as 'north seeking pole'

One way or another, the confusion still remains and with so many north poles there is no wonder nobody has found Santa's house yet.

New Vaginal Gel, an Effective Female Anti-HIV Weapon - Tenofovir
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Could this gel be the so-much-looked-after weapon enabling women to prevent a HIV infection? Trials made by a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine seem to indicate so. Tenofovir was self-applied by patients and well tolerated by HIV negative women.

"The gel is safe to use, and well tolerated by HIV-negative women. This sets the stage for larger studies to see if tenofovir can prevent HIV infection," said Dr. Craig Hoesley, associate professor in the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases and co-author on the initial Phase II trial, whose results have been presented Monday, Feb. 25, at the international microbicides meeting in New Delhi, India.

"Based on what we have learned we can proceed with greater confidence on a path that will answer whether tenofovir gel and other gels with HIV-specific compounds will be able to prevent sexual transmission of HIV in women when other approaches have failed to do so," said lead researcher Dr. Sharon L. Hillier, director of reproductive infectious disease research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

During the 6-month trial, the 200 female subjects were instructed to use the gel daily or before each intercourse. They were also asked to use condoms besides the gel. Tenofovir was found to cause no secondary effects in liver, blood or kidney. All subjects were aged 19 to 50, sexually active, HIV-negative women and enrolled at UAB, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York and the National AIDS Research Institute in Pune, India. 64% of the women were married. 80% of the subjects instructed to apply the gel two hours before intercourse did so; 83% said to apply the gel daily followed the instructions.

"If the gel were approved to help prevent HIV infection, more than 90% of the study volunteers said they would seriously consider using it, regardless of the regimen, to protect their sexual health. We asked women ‘How acceptable is this as a prevention option, is it too messy, is it a nuisance, and will you use it?’ Our study showed they will use it and they’re not bothered by the gel," said Hoesley.

Tenofovir employs a type of anti-retroviral chemicals (nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors) that impede the HIV ability to multiply.

Earth Is Doomed! - Earth will be swallowed by the Sun in 7.6 billion years
By: Gabriel Gache, Science News Editor - Softpedia

Artistic impression of a sunset on a unrecognizable Earth, an ocean of molten rock

Forget about global warming, the ice ages, asteroids or any other impending disaster waiting to happen. Earth will burn! Literally! Astronomers approximate the age of the Sun to a rough 5 billion years and is mostly believed that it will continue to burn hydrogen at least as much time before becoming too unstable to maintain its current form. Our planet, on the other hand, will probably be swallowed by the Sun in 7.6 billion years, rendering it out of existence.

It may seem like an extremely long time before these events will take place, but the fact is that it's not, considering that probabilistic calculations suggest that the human race will go extinct in less than a billion years, along with all the life forms currently living on the surface of our planet. Meanwhile, planetary astronomers are still trying to figure out whether the Earth will drift far enough from the Sun so that it will escape final destruction or not.

A new model proposed by astronomer Robert Smith from Britain's University of Sussex, assisted by Klaus-Peter Schroeder from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, point out that, in about a billion years, our planet will no longer have an atmosphere, water and the friendly to life temperatures we have today. As the Sun advances into its life, it will become ever hotter, due to the extreme temperatures required to burn elements heavier than hydrogen.

There may be more than 150 million kilometers between the Sun and the Earth, however these changes have direct effect upon the weather of our planet. The Earth will become dryer, hotter, impossible to live on. And like that wouldn't have been enough, a secondary effect related to the Sun's aging will then take place. After losing control over the gravitational and nuclear reaction forces that kept it stable for most of its life, the Sun will finally expand into a red giant which will most likely engulf the inner planets.

Let's say that we've evolved far enough to move to another body in the solar system or to another star, why not, we may escape the havoc, however the Earth will not. Or will it? Planetary astronomers are not sure yet, but there is a chance that at least Earth and its sister planet, Mars could drift far enough not to be swallowed by the expanding Sun. During the final stages of the Sun's life, it will start to eject matter from the upper layers, in an effort to maintain stability. Less mass, means less gravity, thus the distance between our star and the planet could drastically increase.

One problem though. This model does not take into account the tidal forces that will act on our planet in the future. Tidal forces caused by gravitational pull between the two massive bodies, could actually slow the orbital speed of the Earth so severely, that our planet, instead of drifting away from the Sun, would spiral towards the inner regions of the solar system and fall into the Sun.

Scientists are already thinking solutions. Assuming that there still is intelligent life on Earth by that time, Earth could be pushed towards the outer regions of the solar system with the help of a gravitational key hole provided by the passing of a large asteroid through the vicinity of our planet. No, it is not the scenario of a science fiction movie, this is pure science. We, as an intelligent life form, will probably live long enough to view the end of our solar system, if we play it safe, the fact is that the chances are stacked against us. 99 percent of all the life forms that lived on the surface of the Earth, no longer exist!

Insect Flight - More sophisticated than previously thought
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Only three groups of animals really fly today: insects, birds and bats. Flight requires the use of organs called wings, but their structure and functioning differ enormously from one group to another. Anyhow, all flying animals are heavier than the air and only the wings movement and the use of air currents keep them flying.

Still, flying animals have relatively lighter bodies. The insect body is crossed by a network of thin respiratory canals called tracheae, which lighten their bodies (like the air sacs and pneumatic bones of the birds).

Insects had been flying 150 million years before the first birds did, and they are the only winged invertebrates. The first flying insects could not bend their wings over their abdomen, as present-days dragonflies do.

In butterflies, the wings are covered by colored scales. The most primitive insects do not have wings at all (the group named Apterygota). In the case of the winged insects (Pterygota), wings can be detained only by one sex (male fireflies are winged, females not), or some castes (in termite and ants, only sexually active males and females have wings, while workers are wingless).

In cool weather, insects must raise their body temperature for taking off, in most cases using sun heat. Scorpionflies (Panorpa) raise their body temperature to 25o C before flying. The moth called Celerio euphorbiae can raise its body temperature by means of muscular contractions, to 30-40o C before taking off. This creature is also one of the rapidest flying insects. The emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia) raises its body temperature to 20o C before flying.

Mosquitoes can fly with the abdomen upwards even in the rain, without getting soaked, by slipping between the rain drops. Dragonflies can fly backwards (the hummingbirds are the only species that can do this, too).

Some tropical wasps and bees can reach 72 km (45 mi) per hour in flight, while locusts and dragonflies, 45-60 km (29-37 mi) per hour. The monarch butterfly of North America makes migrations 3,200 km (2,000 mi) long.

Insects have two pairs of wings, but, in many cases, just one serves for flight. The insect wing is made of a membrane swept by numerous thickened ribs. Because of the ribs, the wing does not fold during the flight. In beetles and bugs, the anterior wings, resembling a crust, are called elytra and they do not beat the air, being just protective. Mosquitoes and flies have just one pair of wings (not two), the second being turned into two organs that detect altitude and acceleration, allowing the insect to adapt permanently to the flight's parameters.

The cabbage white butterfly (Pieris) has a wing rhythm of 5-10 beats per second, the hawker dragonflies have a rhythm of 20-30 beats per second, the bumblebee (Bombus) of 123-233, the house fly (Musca), 147-220, and the honey bee (Apis) of 240-260. Midges (Chironomus) have a rhythm of 196-494. Some flies can beat their wings over 1,000 times per second, more rapidly than a hummingbird.

Mosquitoes can fly 1.5-2.5 km (0.9-1.6 mi)/h at most 5 minutes at once, with a wing rhythm of 250 beats/second. This rhythm determines their buzz and they would like not to generate it; otherwise their presence would be undetectable until they bite. Mosquitoes can execute various aerial stunts, like turns, loopings, forced landings, dives.

The rapid movement of the wings in insects was found to be based on a very rapid break down of the glycogen ("animal starch") from the muscles into the glucose which delivers the required energy through its burning.

A bee collecting nectar at a distance of 3 km (1.8 mi) off the hive spends 0.00035 g of glucose with its flight. Instead, it collects 0.004 g of glucose with the nectar (about 0.02 g).

Both...God created all the animal species and then He ordered them to evolved in order to survive.

Genesis 9:7 according to King James Bible
And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Mutation. It is the key to our evolution. It is how we have evolved from a single-cell organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few millennia evolution leaps forward.

“I’ve Been Hired to Kill You! I'll Let You Live If You Pay Up!” - Deadly email scam
By: Vlad Constandes, SEO News Editor - Softpedia

Nobody wants to know somebody is shadowing them

I’m certain that each and everybody in the online community has received at one point an email from the grieving widow of some general from an African country that only needed some bank information to be able to transfer the huge sum of money left to her but couldn’t collect. It usually says that for the services of providing a bank account the pay is somewhere between $1 and $3.5 million.

The latest scheme discovered by the Fairfax and Stafford county authorities is a bit more drastic than the plea from the widow mentioned above. Extortion is the right word for it. The reports mention receiving an email from a person claiming to have been hired to do the recipients in, but is actually sympathetic to life and doesn’t believe the victims to be guilty of what they are charged with.

For a sum of money, the hit man would be willing to let them live and even supply evidence incriminating his contractor. "The sender tells the receiver, 'I've been hired to kill you, it's one of your friends, I'm watching you. However . . . I don't believe you did what they said, and I'm going to give you a chance to pay me, and I won't kill you'," Fairfax police spokeswoman, Camille Neville, said.

The content of the messages received so far differ from person to person, as does the amount of money asked for. The Washington Post reports the case of Manassas resident Jessica Walker, who received an email saying that, in exchange for $15,000, she would get the audiotapes containing conversations between the hit man and the person who wanted to see her dead. Often, the messages contain spelling and grammar errors, as Bill Kennedy, a Stafford County sheriff’s office spokesman, told the Post.

The death threat and extortion messages have increased in number since December 2006, according to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Browser Beta Fiesta, Not Only IE8 Beta 1 But Also Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 - Betas everywhere you look
By: Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor - Softpedia

After more than a year of dogfooding Internet Explorer 8, while at the same time keeping the lid shut tight on any details about the successor of Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft started talking the next iteration of its proprietary browser in December 2007. First, there was the hilarious confirmation of an aspect that was generally known, the fact that IE next was in fact IE8. Then, there came good news for developers as IE8 in standards mode passed the Acid2 Test and correctly rendered the smiling face, indicating strong support added for standards.

At the same time, in mid-December 2007, Dean Hachamovitch, IE General Manager, announced that the first beta of IE8 was planned by the summer of this year. With the first showcasing of Internet Explorer 8 planned for early March at the MIX08 conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft has started sending out invitations to the private IE8 Beta 1 testing program. The invitation emails from the IE Team also reveal that IE8 Beta 1 will be made available to the general public shortly.

But IE8 Beta 1 is not the only browser testing milestone that is just around the corner. Mozilla is cooking the fourth beta for Firefox 3.0. The Beta 4 build for the open source browser was confirmed concomitantly with the availability of Firefox 3.0 Beta 3, but at that time no timetable whatsoever had been set. This is no longer the case. Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 String Freeze was on February 21, while the Beta 4 l10n Code Freeze dropped on February 25, and the Beta 4 Code Freeze was scheduled for today, February 26. Mozilla planned only a 2-3-day baking period for the next development milestone of the open source browser, which means that users will be able to get their hands on Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 in early March.

The Eight-Limbed Girl Can Walk Now! - Three months following her surgery
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Lakshmi Tatma, before surgery

When this girl was born in a poor village in Bihar (northern India), the locals regarded her as the reincarnation of the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. That's why the girl was named Lakshmi.
Lakshmi had attracted the attention of people eager to gain money from her deformity: a circus even tried to buy the girl, and the parents had to hide the child. But Lakshmi Tatma is not a goddess: she was born with a headless, undeveloped parasitic twin joined to her pelvis, and the extra four limbs were the arms and legs of the undeveloped sister. The other twin ceased growing in the mother's womb.

Lakshmi integrated the limbs, kidneys and other organs of the undeveloped fetus into her body, resulting two merged spines, four kidneys, entangled nerves, two stomach cavities and two chest cavities. Conjoined twins appear at a rate of one to 200,000 births, developing from a sole fertilized egg, thus they are identical. Survival rate is 5 to 25%. 600 surviving couples are known in the last 500 years, of which 70% were females.

The 2-year old Lakshmi could not stand up or walk on her many limbs. In November 2007, a team of 30 medics led by Dr. Sharan Patil, at a private Bangalore hospital, operated freely Lakshmi for giving her a normal life. The surgery lasted 27 hours (and was evaluated to $ 60,000) and it had been previously denied by a New Delhi hospital.

The team separated Lakshmi's spinal column, extra-limbs and kidney from that of the parasite. Now Lakshmi has started to walk making her first assisted steps, in the new residence of the family in the western state of Rajasthan, and she can now sit up without difficulty.

Lakshmi after the surgery

"When she was put in the baby walker, she started pushing herself backwards with her legs and burst into laughter with a huge grin on her face. She loves it. Every day since she left the hospital, she's managed to do more and more things that were impossible earlier," Lakshmi's mother Poonam said.

The girl left the hospital in December, and the family settled in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district, where a charity had offered them lodging and free education. The girl will need further operations to correct club feet and rebuild pelvic floor muscles. "Lakshmi is still facing some major urinary problems and her legs are bent to some extent. The surgery is likely to be carried out in the next two months," said Dr B.S Bhati.

The Chinese Stone Forest - How did it form?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Columns in the Stone Forest National Park

The most spectacular calcareous relief in the world could be considered the Chinese Stone Forest. The Stone Forest National Park of Shilin-Lunan (Yunnan) is located in the Lunan Yu Autonomous County, 126 km (79 mi) southeast of Kunming, at altitudes of 1,700-2,000 m. It has an area of over 340 square km (135 square mi) but, together with the forests and localities, the surface of the National Park goes to 400 square km (160 square mi). 200 square km are reservation of first degree. The local minorities living around the park are Miao and Yi.

Similar phenomena can be encountered in France, Spain, Australia, Papua-New Guinea, Mexico, Brazil and Sarawak, but at a much smaller scale, the sum of all being less than one quarter of the surface of the Stone Forest of Yunnan.

The stones in the rock labyrinth got various shapes, from columns to posts, moving stones, mushrooms, towers, pyramids, corridors, antropomorph and zoomorph shapes, isolated or in groups. Many of the rocks pop up from lake beds. Many stones received local names: "Phoenix bird adjusting its feathers", "rhinoceroses watching the moon", "Ashma" (the name of a legendary hero of the local ethnic group, Yi), "monkey on the elephant back", "mother and son", "the teeth of the dragon", "the Great Mogul" and others. Many columns are collapsed due to the earthquakes. The columns can be up to 30-40 m (100-133 ft) tall.

The Stone Forest is a typical karst formation, carved in a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed on a seafloor, 270 million years ago. The limestone going out of the sea was cracked on large surfaces. The web of rectangular cracks eased the advance of surface waters, coming from abundant rainfall, to exert a vast action of dissolving and washing along them, forming first grooves whose dimensions, in time, grew up to meters. In time, the grooves formed a lapis field. The lapis stones deepened, forming prismatic columns which detached from the calcareous mass.

Image of the park

About 200 million years ago, various fantastic stone forms emerged, such as peaks, pillars, corridors, towers, pyramids and stalagmites, like a vast forest of stone. Then, 250 Ma ago, volcanic eruptions covered the calcareous formations, protecting them against the action of rains, rivers and vegetation. When, in time, erosion carved the volcanic rocks, revealing again the limestone columns, the new columns were thinner and cracked in some places.

In Eocene, 55 Ma ago, the columns were covered by the waters of a deep lake, which deposed red sediments. In Quaternary, the lake was filled by sediments and the surface waters revealed the rocks with the aspect of prismatic columns. In places where erosion started earlier, the columns got sharper and thinner, with the pyramid shape.

The formation of the Stone Forest is very humid, but the shadow allows relatively few plants, especially large ferns and vines, to grow there.
