MANILA, Philippines -- The testimony of a little girl led investigators to a suspect in the bloody Rizal Banking Commercial Corp. (RCBC) heist last May 16 in Cabuyao, Laguna.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Director Geary Barias told reporters in Camp Crame Friday morning that the little girl, already in police custody, positively identified Ricardo Gomolon as one of the bank robbers.

Gomolon was arrested last Saturday near his residence in Consular Street Barangay 31, Southside, Fort Bonifacio.

He was a member of the Philippine Army’s Engineering Battalion and now works as a Bantay Bayan volunteer in Marikina City.

The witness, Barias said, saw the suspect alight from a vehicle used by the robbers and was one of the first to enter the bank.

Superintendent Ferdinand Ampil, chief of the NCRPO Regional Intelligence Operations Unit, said an informant tipped them off on the involvement of Gomolon in the heist.

Ampil said they conducted a two-day surveillance operation on the suspect, even following him to a commissary in the JUSMAG compound inside Fort Bonifacio in Makati City, where Gomolon was said to be shopping with large bundles of money.

Last Saturday morning, Ampil’s men were conducting surveillance on Gomolon when they saw the suspect on a bicycle with a gun tucked in his waist. The suspect was immediately frisked and arrested, and a.38 caliber pistol taken from him.

He was later brought to the Laguna provincial police command where the nine-year old witness positively identified the suspect.

“A little girl will not lie and invent a story,” Barias said when asked how sure police are of the testimony of a child.
Charges of illegal possession of firearms have been filed against the suspect.

Ampil said they are gathering more evidence to pin down Gomolon to the May 16 heist, including a comparison of his fingerprint with those taken from the crime scene and a check of the serial number of any money bills in the suspect’s possession with those from the bank.

Ten people were killed during the robbery, all of them shot in the head, and P12 million taken by the robbers.

UTRECHT, The Netherlands -- Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro is someone to watch out for in the 2010 presidential elections, according to self-exiled Philippine communist leader Jose Maria Sison.

"I've been telling people to watch out for this guy. He may rate low now but it could push up overnight. This will measure the strength of Cojuangco's support," said the man who started the decades' old communist insurgency in the Philippines in an exclusive interview. (Cojuangco refers to businessman Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., former crony of the late dictator President Ferdinand Marcos.)

Teodoro, whose impressive academic credentials are wowing some members of the diplomatic community, is a nephew of Cojuangco. Topping the bar exams in 1989, Teodoro holds a bachelor's degree in management of financial institutions from De La Salle University, a law degree from the University of the Philippines, and a master's degree from the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

INQUIRER.net asked Sison, who officially holds the title of chief political consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines in its ongoing informal peace talks with the government, to comment on the presidential hopefuls that are already preparing their bid for the top post some two years before Election Day.

Of Vice President Noli De Castro, who is topping the surveys on who is likely to win the 2010 presidential elections, the communist leader says: "What can you expect from him? He will use demagogic, possibly populist terms like pro-poor. But he is no different from [President Gloria Macapagal-] Arroyo, he wants to enrich himself. He used to be a nobody who only wants to collect rewards."

Of Senator Loren Legarda: "She's sometimes progressive and she's not afraid to cooperate with the Left."

Of Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero: "Popular."

Of Senate President Manuel Villar: "He's a businessman who has not talked on important issues, but he has projected himself as independent of Malacañang."

Of Senator Panfilo Lacson: "He has mellowed but when in power, matindi yan (he can be extreme)."

Of Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas II: "Populist. I don't know if he would be able to shake off his neo-liberal mindset."

According to him, in a multi-corner presidential contest, deposed President Joseph "Erap" Estrada's endorsement will mean a lot.

"Fifteen percent is solid Erap. And in a field of seven candidates, you only need 30 to 40 percent to win," he says.

At the same time, Sison says Ms Arroyo will try to strike a deal with her successor when she steps down from power so that she may not be prosecuted for the various anomalies that she or her husband has been accused of participating in.

"Every president takes care that her successor will not go after her," he says.

As for the role of the progressive movement in the 2010 elections, Sison says the extent of its growth will be measured by the "actual emergence of a winnable presidential candidate" either among its ranks or one it can support.

And for him, the viable candidate that the Left can support is Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno. "With some money, and perhaps a vice president who can bring in the money for the campaign, [Puno] has the correct take on social and political issues."

However, he admits that the local mass movement is "sluggish." He attributes this to the extra-judicial killings of activists, to "missing skills" among them, and the increase in "labor casualization," which results in young people taking odd jobs.

Nevertheless, he says he remains optimistic that more young activists who are "daring, articulate, and easy to deploy" will join the movement.

"Assuming that the mass movement progresses, we will have some material available in the Philippines," he says. He also hopes that some progressive activists from the 1980s and the 1990s with "patriotic and nationalistic" positions will emerge in the House of Representatives.

He supports "to some extent" the analysis of former Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo Neri (as presented by whistle-blower Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada before the Senate) that migrant labor has become the Philippines' safety valve that keeps the "social volcano" from exploding.

"It has become a significant outlet…But as the world crisis worsens, it may be adversely affected," he says.

Sison still maintains that the Philippine society is semi-colonial and semi-feudal as it was when he wrote the seminal Philippine Society and Revolution, practically the Philippine version of Mao Zedong's “The Little Red Book”, about 40 years ago.

He says the economic growth the Arroyo administration has been boasting of is brought about by debts, consumption expenses, and taxes. "There are no more agricultural lands to develop. There has been no real development, no industrialization…On a strategic level, [the Philippines has] been surviving on foreign loans, privatization and denationalization, and wage suppression for foreign investments in mines and plantations," he says.(Inquirer.net)

But in the case of our beloved Philippines, as long as we cannot get out  on our semi colonial and semi feudal  system, yet the 2 classes elite in our society will still exists (the poor and the rich). Our country is facing these three basic problems, namely: imperialism, feudalism and bureaucrat capitalism, which now ruthlessly exploit the broad masses of the Filipino people. These three historical evils are the basic problems that afflict Philippine society, nga bisan unsaon pa nato og pagpaningkamot ang atong kita igo rang itubag sa atong inadlaw adlawng panginahanglanon, ang katawhan gigisa lang intawn sa kaugalingon niyang mantika..

Hows does imperialism monopolized the Filipino people?
The semicolonial character of Philippine society is principally determined by U.S. imperialism.
In an uneven and spasmodic way, U.S. surplus capital has been invested in the Philippine economy. At present the U.S. monopolies and their local subsidiaries own or control such businesses involving petroleum14, tire and rubber, drugs, fertilizers, chemicals, mining, heavy equipment, marketing, transport facilities and others. The majority of the biggest corporations in the Philippines today are American. They control at least 50 per cent of the total business assets in the country.

And what about feudalism?
Feudalism is a mode of production in which the principal forces of production are the peasants and the land which they till and the relations of production are basically characterized by landlord oppression and exploitation of the peasantry. The most immediate manifestation of feudalism is the possession of vast areas of cultivable land by a few landlords who themselves do not till the land and who compel a big number of tenants to do the tilling. Feudal relations between the parasitic landlord class and the productive peasantry essentially involve the extortion of exorbitant land rent in cash or kind from the latter by the former. Such basic relations leave the tenant-peasants impoverished as their share of the crop is just enough or even often inadequate for their subsistence.

And bureaucrat capitalism refers to our government officials..they are the sources  of Graft and Corruption,,get bribe money on the adoption of laws, executive orders and court decisions. In every contract, concession, franchise or license there is a certain amount of money that is used to line the pockets of the bureaucrat capitalists. Oftentimes, they themselves are parties in private transactions directly or through trusted dummies or relatives.

The 19-year-old daughter of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian “horror dad” accused of imprisoning his daughter for 24 years and fathering her seven children, has woken from a coma, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Kerstin, born to Fritzl and his daughter Elisabeth during her years in captivity, was placed in an artificial coma after she suffered a severe kidney infection and organ failure last month. Doctors have begun the process of slowly waking her up as her condition improves.

Kerstin was freed in April when Fritzl, 73, took her to a hospital after she collapsed in his cellar in Amstetten, Austria.

She began showing signs of life over the weekend, and her family told the Daily Mail she has opened her eyes.
Elisabeth is recovering with her five other children in a psychiatric clinic near the hospital.

“Elisabeth and family are very happy, but they know they mustn't get their hopes up too high,” a source close to the victims told the Daily Mail. “Kerstin's incredibly fragile. She'll be in bed a long time â€" probably months.”
Albert Reiter, one of the doctors caring for Kerstin, said that one concern is that the infection may have left her with a shortage of oxygen, and resulting brain damage, the Mail reported.

“The medication keeping her in an artificial coma is being slowly reduced,” Reiter told the Daily Mail. “This is the first phase in the process of eventually waking her up. How long this will take is something we cannot say.”

Authorities say Fritzl has confessed to locking up his daughter and repeatedly raping and impregnating her. Investigators say he also told them three of the children were raised in a cellar at his home, three others were brought up above ground and one died in infancy.

Fritzl's alleged double life fell apart when Kerstin was hospitalized with the infection.

Unable to find medical records for the woman, doctors appealed to her mother to come forward. Fritzl accompanied Elisabeth to the hospital on April 26 and was detained after she divulged what had allegedly happened to her.(Foxnews.com)

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- About 500 families displaced by the latest clash between soldiers and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Ungkaya Pukan in Basilan have run out of provisions and were forced to forage for food, Mayor Joel Maturan said.

"Not a single social welfare personnel went up here to deliver food assistance or relief," Maturan said.

Maturan said because of lack of food, the displaced residents have had to content themselves with cassava and bananas for three straight days now.

"My people are suffering. Although there are cassava and bananas, these are not enough," he said.

Maturan said what compounded the problem on the lack of food is the scarcity of funds.

"Much as I want to help, I don't have funds for emergency. I don't even have money to buy medicines or used clothing," he said by phone.

A television report quoted some villagers as saying they were waiting for the military's go signal so they can go back to their homes.

But Maturan said the military might not allow civilians back into their villages yet because of reports that MILF rebels were regrouping in Silangcom village.

Aside from the lack of food, Maturan said he was also worried that classes would not be held in the affected villages.

Marine Commandant Major General Ben Dolorfino said they were trying to avoid a direct confrontation with the MILF, which is engaged in a peace talks with the government.

"The troops were directed to stay away from schools and populated areas," he said.(Mindanao Bureau. )

Arroyo, Thai PM tackle food crisis

The problem of rising food costs will be on top of the agenda when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo meets with visiting Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in Malacañang Thursday.

The Thai premier, who came into power only last January, arrives Thursday for a two-day visit as part of his traditional visit to all member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Samak will be given arrival honors in Malacañang at 4:55 p.m. Thursday. He will meet with President Arroyo at 5:20 p.m.

The President will host a state dinner for Samak, who in his three decades in politics had been deputy prime minister three times, minister of transportation twice, interior minister and deputy agriculture minister, according to Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye.

Celebrity chef

“The Prime Minister is also a known celebrity chef in Thailand, having hosted a popular cooking show in Thailand called ‘Tasting, Grumbling,’” said Bunye.

Bunye said President Arroyo and the Thai premier were expected to take up the current worldwide problem of rising food costs, particularly rice.

The two leaders are expected to discuss cooperation on food security; improving the supply and distribution of rice; improving rice productivity through research and development, using the latest technique in crop establishment as well as rice breeding, he said.

Bunye said the two leaders would also talk about the humanitarian assistance to Burma, which was severely hit by a powerful cyclone last week that killed thousands of Burmese.

They will also discuss cooperation in tourism and trade and investment as well as issues about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Biggest exporter

Thailand is the world’s biggest rice exporter, and is one of the main suppliers of rice to the Philippines along with Vietnam.

On Wednesday, the government confirmed that it had requested a consignment of rice from Thailand.

“We have asked them to supply us with a certain volume of rice,” Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap told reporters, adding that an answer was awaited. He said the request was made some months ago.

The Philippines, the world’s largest rice importer this year, has already contracted 1.7 million tons of rice from abroad at a cost of about $1 billion. It is likely to import around 2.1 million tons more this year.

The government paid an average of about $1,136 per ton of rice at its last successful tender in April, up 60 percent from the previous month.

Bad policies

But a leading a economist said Wednesday the rice crisis affecting the Philippines is not caused by a shortage of rice but due to bad policies that have hurt the agriculture sector.

“The so-called rice crisis is really an income crisis,” said Rolando Dy, executive director of the food division of the University of Asia and the Pacific.

He blamed “under-investment in agriculture and infrastructure, a poor record in eliminating poverty (and) poor infrastructure quality,” for the crisis which has forced thousands of poor Filipinos to line up for hours for subsidized rice.( With Reuters and Agence France-Presse reports)

The Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) has put up a P1-million reward, bringing the total bounty to P2 million for the arrest of the suspects in the brutal robbery of its branch in Cabuyao, Laguna that left nine people dead.

President Arroyo joined various sectors in condemning the massacre as she ordered the police to intensify the manhunt for the suspects.

The banking sector also urged authorities to track down the suspects as cash donations for the reward poured in.

On top of RCBC’s offer of P1 million, Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Laguna Gov. Teresita Lazaro each pledged P100,000 for the bounty.

Senior Superintendent Aaron Fidel, head of Task Force RCBC that was formed to investigate the killings, said a total of P800,000 was offered by various sectors which expressed concern and outrage over the murders.

Fidel said the money came from various sources in the Calabarzon area.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Mrs. Arroyo was very angry over the incident and ordered Philippine National Police chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. to personally oversee the investigation.

“I was able to talk to her (President Arroyo) for a short while and she was very disappointed. In all the past bank heists, this was the first time that she saw something like this happen,” Ermita said.

Ermita’s son, RCBC corporate services division vice president Edwin Ermita, announced the P1-million reward and said the bank has taken care of all the expenses of the victims’ families.

Ermita claimed the ninth victim was a client of the RCBC Cabuyao branch.

The bank’s customer relations manager Isagani Pastor, who was earlier reported to have succumbed to injuries in the incident, is still listed in critical condition at the St. James Hospital in Cabuyao, Ermita said.

“We ask the public to pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and the speedy recovery of the manager (Pastor),” Ermita said.

He emphasized Pastor holds the key to the identities of the suspects and the early solution of the case.

Seven of RCBC’s employees, a security guard and a client’s representative were lined up and shot dead inside the bank in what police described as one of the bloodiest bank robberies in history.

The victims were found sprawled on the floor of the bank, each with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police took for questioning two guards of the bank, identified as Joel de la Cruz and Regidor Sapun, who were both reported missing shortly after the killings took place.

According to Ermita, they are focusing on the entries in the logbook of the bank.

He said the entries in the logbook purportedly showed policemen entering the bank before the incident.

Ermita said investigators are looking at the possibility that the suspects may have entered the bank by pretending to be policemen.

Initial investigation revealed that Baltazar Aguilando, the security guard killed by the gunmen inside the bank, had reportedly entered in the logbook the names of several people who introduced themselves as lawmen.

The logbook stated the “policemen” entered the bank at 8:35 a.m. Friday.

A witness, identified as a certain Sheila, claimed seeing her driver, Ferdinand Bernard Antonio, one of the victims, being accosted by unidentified men wearing black jackets while about to enter the bank.

Sheila said she was inside her service car waiting for Antonio to emerge.

After 30 minutes of waiting, she noticed a commotion and responding policemen arriving at the bank. Sheila claimed she later learned that a robbery had taken place inside and Antonio was among those killed.

Police said the number of robbers and the amount of loot taken have not yet been determined.

Investigators are still verifying the fingerprints taken from the get-away vehicle used by the suspects found abandoned several kilometers away from the scene.

Tighter security urged

As the cash rewards poured in, various sectors called for the immediate solution of the robbery.

The banking community urged tighter security at banks to protect the industry and the banking clients.

But the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said it could only impose minimum security requirements on banks, and added the spate of violent bank robberies should be solved by the police.

BSP Governor Amando Tetangco said last Friday’s robbery at the RCBC was a reminder that banks should strengthen their security to protect their clients and employees.

“I hope the (police) investigation (on that incident) solves it,” Tetangco said.

“But there really is not much we can do because banks are given a wide latitude for addressing security concerns,” he said.

Tetangco pointed out the time delay mechanism in the bank vault was part of BSP’s minimum security requirements but as far as the hiring of security personnel is concerned, the decision is left to the banks.

“Needless to say, I am extremely disturbed,” Tetangco said. “Acts like this are an assault on the security of banking institutions that can harm public confidence.”

Tetangco said the BSP issued bank regulations that directed banks to implement security measures that include the use of advanced technologies to physically protect their branches and electronic systems.

“Beyond that, the banks have to run their branches as they see fit,” he said. “We just hope that the police will be able to solve this case and bring the criminals to justice.”

Following the incident, the National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) ordered tighter security measures on banks in Metro Manila with increased police visibility and patrols.

NCRPO chief Director Geary Barias said chokepoints have been established near banks to provide tighter security.

Barias said all the district police commanders have been ordered to set up road checkpoints in strategic areas in Metro Manila, particularly near banks.

Lawmakers, on the other hand, challenged the police to immediately solve the Cabuyao robbery.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said the police have failed to secure the area that could have prevented the brutal killings.

Sen. Loren Legarda added the police should come out with significant developments in the case within 48 hours. She said security must be beefed up, particularly in commercial areas.

Both senators said the incident gives enough reason to revive the death penalty.

The anti-crime group Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) condemned the robbery and urged the government to review the possible reimposition of the death penalty.

The VACC said the “RCBC massacre is a reality check for our law enforcement agencies.”

Malacañang, however, said the incident does not mean the possible reimposition of the death penalty.

Deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez said the imposition of the death penalty has not been proven to be a deterrent to heinous crimes based on any statistical data. ( Inquirer.net)

A woman whose live-in partner was pestering her to have sex with him lost her temper and cut off his organ Sunday morning.

PO3 Geronimo Gatpolintan of the Manila Police District Station 1 said Claire Noche, 46, could be charged with serious physical injury for what she did to her companion of three years, Julieto Bacares, 41.

Noche told the police that she cut off the victim’s organ after he kept on pestering her to have sex with him even though he knew she had her monthly period.

The incident happened at around 8 a.m. Sunday in the couple’s house on Patria Street in Balut, Tondo.

Noche said that while she was cooking, Bacares kept on calling her from their room. Irked, she took a knife and cut his organ off. Bacares ran outside their house and was rushed by neighbors to a hospital.

Police later recovered the knife used by the suspect but not the victim’s organ which she reportedly flushed down the toilet.(Philippine Daily Inquirer)

At least nine people were confirmed dead and one in critical condition in a bank robbery in Laguna province, a police official said.

Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla, Calabarzon police director, said seven of the casualties, who were found inside the bank, were identified as employees of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) while another was a client. The ninth victim, a security guard on duty, was found outside, he said.

All of them were shot in the head. Two of them were seen near the vault, said Padilla.

Padilla said one of two security guards who were reported missing surfaced later in the day to clear his name. Their absence earlier in the day led authorities to suspect that they were involved in the robbery.

Padilla identified the fatalities as Roberto Castro, bank manager; Ma. Theresa Umayam, teller; Olga Gonzales, new accounts teller; Benjamin Lidao, junior teller; Bernardo Lapaan, customer's cashier; Noel Miranda, operational assistant; Juan Layva, janitor; Ferdinand Antonio, a client; and Aguilando Baltazar, security guard.

Recovered from the crime scene were spent shells from a .38 revolver, 9-millimeter, and .45 caliber pistols, said Padilla.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and extended her condolences to the families of the victims as she vowed justice for them, Deputy Palace Spokesperson Lorelie Fajardo said.

"The President has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation on the incident so that the responsible be brought before the bar of justice," Fajardo said.

Padilla said the murders were discovered when RCBC clients alerted police on why the bank was not opened at the usual time of 9 a.m. It was also possible that the victims knew the robbers since they all had to be killed inside the bank, he added.

"This is not the handiwork of humans. This was perpetrated by animals," Padilla said on local television.

Initial investigation showed that the robbers were able to cart away a still undetermined amount of money because the bank vault was open, he said.

"Definitely may nawawala [something is missing], bukas yung vault ang ibang pera nakakalat pa [the vault is open and some cash are littered on the floor]," said Padilla.

Meanwhile, police recovered a white Toyota Revo with no plate number in Turbina, Calamba City which belonged to one of the slain bank employees. Padilla said the robbers used it as a getaway vehicle.
A task group was also created for the immediate capture of the suspects, he added.

Police have erected roadblocks in the region and the identities of certain motorists are being checked, said Philippine National Police spokesman Nicanor Bartolome.

The Task Force RCBC will be composed of investigators from the Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the Regional Crime Laboratory, Traffic Management Group, Laguna Police Provincial Office, and the Civil Security Group, according to a police statement.

PNP Director General Avelino Razon also instructed Police Director Silverio Alarcio, directorate for operations chief, to convene the Joint Anti-Bank Robbery Council (JABRAC) and the Bank Security Management Association (BSMA) for a smooth implementation of new security measures.( INquirer.net)

There has been a “substantial" improvement in Filipinos’ proficiency in the English language, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey.

Results of the March 30-April 2 survey of the SWS showed an “apparent recovery” -- based on the respondents’ own assessment of themselves -- in the locals’ ability to read and write English, compared to the results of a similar survey in March 2006.

However, their ability to speak and think in English has not fully recovered, according to SWS head Mahar Mangahas.

About 76 percent of 1,200 voting-age adults surveyed said they could understand spoken English, 11 percentage points higher than those polled in March 2006.

About three-fourths of respondents, or 75 percent, said they could read English while 61 percent of respondents said they could write English, compared to 2006 figures of 65 percent and 48 percent, respectively.

Less than half of respondents (46 percent) said they could speak English while 38 percent said they could think in English, clearly an improvement over 2006 survey results of 32 percent and 27 percent.

The same survey also showed a marked improvement in the English competency of various occupational groups: non-agricultural/unskilled, 77 percent (from 60 percent in 2006); non-agricultural/skilled, 80 percent (72 percent); non-agricultural/entrepreneur, 80 percent (72 percent); agricultural/operators, 65 percent (45 percent), clerical/administrative/sales/community workers, 87 percent (80 percent), professional/technical/managers, 90 percent (82 percent); and not working, 77 percent (66 percent).

The March 2006 survey showed a decline in all aspects of English proficiency, most notably in Filipinos’ ability to speak English.

In September 2000, about 77 percent of Filipino adults said they understood spoken English, another 65 percent said they could read the foreign language, 48 percent said they could write English, 32 percent said they could speak the language, while 54 percent said they could think in English.

In the latest SWS survey, eight percent of respondents said they were not competent in any way when it comes to the English language, a decline of six percentage points over the 2006 figure.

According to SWS, self-assessed English competence was high in the National Capital Region where almost nine out of 10 adults (86 percent) said they could understand spoken English; three out of four (77 percent) said they could read English; two out of three (68 percent) said they could write English; three out of five (62 percent) said they could speak English; half or 51 percent said they could think in English while a low two percent they were not competent in the language.

English competence was also higher in urban compared to rural areas.

In urban areas, 81 percent of adults said they could understand English compared to only 71 percent in rural communities.

Among socio-economic classes ABC, 82 percent of respondents said they could understand the language compared to 80 percent and 66 percent in the D and E classes.

Tickets, check. Passports, check. Luggage, check. Baby ... oops.

A family boarded a flight on Monday in westernmost Canada, and forgot their tot at the Vancouver international airport, media said Tuesday.

The 23-month-old boy's family had just arrived in Canada from the Philippines, but they were forced to repack their overweight bags before catching a connecting flight to Winnipeg, causing them to run late.

In their sprint to the gate, the family became separated.

The boy's father Jun Parreno, told local media he had thought his son was with his wife and the boy's grandparents, who ran ahead. They thought the boy was with his dad.

On the plane, the family members were seated separately and so did not immediately realize they had left the child behind.

Sometime later, a security guard found the boy, who speaks no English, wandering near the departure gate, and Air Canada officials tracked down his shocked parents on the flight.

Because the boy was so young, he was not issued a boarding pass and would have sat on a parent's lap during the flight, so airline personnel did not notice a passenger was missing.

According to the Vancouver Sun, airport security found a Tagalog-speaking Air Canada agent who looked after the child while his father flew 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) back to Vancouver to pick him up and then return to Winnipeg to rejoin the immigrant family on their first day in Canada.

The baby was kept in Air Canada's offices and staff found him some toys, said local media.

"Air Canada took good care of him," Parreno told the daily Winnipeg Free Press upon arrival. "I'm grateful."

BEIJING -- (UPDATE 2) An earthquake in southwest China on Monday left nearly 900 students buried, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese President Hu Jintao called for "all-out" efforts to rescue victims of the powerful earthquake Xinhua reported, adding Premier Wen Jiabao had traveled to the epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude quake in Sichuan province.

The Chinese government had also sent troops to help with disaster relief work.

The powerful quake struck close to densely populated areas of southwest China and shook buildings as far away as Bangkok, officials said, sending thousands of people onto the streets.

Tremors were also felt in Hong Kong, Hanoi and Taipei, residents said, but there were no immediate reports of damage,

The quake struck 93 kilometers (58 miles) from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province and a major population centre with more than 12 million people, and about 260 kilometers from Chongqing and its 30 million.

Xinhua reported the quake 7.8 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey measured it at 7.5.

Buildings shook in Beijing and Shanghai at the same time, residents in the cities reported, with many people evacuating tower blocks, although there were no immediate reports of major damage in those major cities.

A reporter for CCTV news in Chengdu said residents had poured out onto the streets but public transport and electricity supplies remained operational.

However, the tremor appeared to have disrupted cellular telecommunications in the city, he added.

Asked if anyone had been hurt, the reporter said: "All appears to be fine."

State television also said there appeared to be no infrastructure problems in Chongqing.

The phone network in Chengdu and elsewhere around the country appeared to suffer a meltdown as people throughout China tried to find out what happened, making it extremely difficult to contact residents.

The quake struck shortly before 2.30 pm (0630 GMT), according to the USGS, at a depth of just 10 kilometers (six miles).

Two residents near downtown Chengdu that Agence France-Presse contacted by phone said they felt a violent shaking that threw glassware to the floor and toppled street lights.

However, they were not sure whether the quake had caused significant damage in the city as they had not yet ventured far from their own home.

Further information could not be obtained as the connection was cut.

The quake was felt in the Taiwanese capital Taipei, where buildings swayed for around half a minute.

It was also felt in the southern Chinese territory of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

"Several local residents called the Hong Kong Observatory to report having felt a tremor," it said in a statement, adding its seismograph also picked up the tremor.

"A number of local residents reported to have felt this tremor which lasted several seconds," the Observatory said in a statement.

In Hanoi, residents said some high buildings shook for around five minutes but there were no reports of damage.

The last powerful quake to hit China was on March 21, a 7.2 magnitude quake which struck near the northwestern city of Hotan in Xinjiang province.

Xinhua reported that a quake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Beijing at the same time as near Chengdu.

A reporter for Hong Kong-based Cable News based in Kunming, the capital of southwestern Yunnan province which borders Sichuan, said he saw many people running onto the streets to find out what had happened.

"One office worker working on the 11th floor of a building in Kunming told me that the lamps in his office were shaking and he felt dizzy," the reporter told the local broadcaster.

He added that people in Kunming had tried to call their friends in Sichuan, but the lines were jammed.

The USGS estimate of the depth makes it a so-called "shallow" earthquake -- a category generally known to cause greater damage than deeper ones.

One of the biggest quakes ever recorded was in China in 1976, which killed 242,000 people.

That quake centered in the northern city of Tangshan lasted for 15 seconds and flattened 90 percent of buildings. The death toll, out of a population of one million, made it one of the deadliest in the world in the 20th century.

In 1920 and again in 1927, separate quakes each left some 200,000 dead. (Agence France-Presse)

It's confirmed.

Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo are now officially engaged.

An insider on Monday confirmed Ryan proposed to Judai while vacationing in a Visayan province. The source also said the actress has, tearfully accepted.

A wedding date is yet to be finalized.

Ryan has been very upfront about his birthday gift to girlfriend Judai, a coffeetable book on the making of “Ploning.” It turned out he had another (top-secret) present for Judai, who turned 30 on Sunday.

In their vacation with adopted daughter Yohann, the actress was pleasantly surprised to receive...a diamond engagement ring.

Ryan’s dad Chito, Judai’s mom Carol and her manager Alfie Lorenzo openly expressed, during her birthday celebration on GMA-7’s “SOP” a week ago, their wish for the couple to settle down.

According to a source from that neck of the woods, the ring was bought in Hong Kong. The previously announced European holiday is coming up. Sounds serious.

OMAHA, Neb. â€"  An Omaha man struggling to breathe used a steak knife to perform an at-home tracheotomy.

Steve Wilder says he thought he was going to die when he awoke one night last week and couldn't breathe.

Wilder says he didn't call 911 because he didn't think help would arrive in time. So, the 55-year-old says, he got a steak knife from the kitchen and made a small hole in his throat, allowing air to gush in.

Wilder suffered from throat cancer and related breathing problems several years ago. About that time, he had an episode where he couldn't breathe because his air passages swelled shut. He says that's what happened this time around.

Doctors don't expect Wilder to suffer any adverse effects from the tracheotomy once it's healed.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo urged the promotion of birth spacing as a family-planning method and part of efforts to curb the demand for food as the price of rice continues to rise in the world market.

In birth spacing, couples allow at least a two-year interval in between children.

“We are challenged to put more money into poor people’s pockets. That is why we’re creating programs in training women. We are challenged to promote good nutrition. We are challenged to promote birth spacing,” Arroyo said in a speech at the convention of Soroptimists International-Philippines Friday.

Although the rice production rate is higher than the population growth rate, Arroyo said this is no reason to relax since the country has not yet achieved self-sufficiency in the staple cereal.

“Our agricultural modernization…has allowed us to increase our rice production by more than the population growth rate of 2.04% [but] even if our rice production is growing more than our population, we have been importing rice since Spanish times and we have not closed that gap in a sustainable manner,” she said.

The plane is ready and the medical team assembled for the humanitarian mission is all set but the Philippines has yet to receive Myanmar's (Burma) nod to the country's offer of assistance amid a climbing death toll in the military-ruled neighbor.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Friday that Myanmar has yet to accept the Philippines' offer to send a 15-member medical contingent to the typhoon-ravaged country, where deaths are feared to reach 100,000.

Philippine Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog meanwhile said sendoff ceremonies for the team have been tentatively scheduled at the Villamor Air Base at 10 a.m. Saturday, but a departure time has yet to be set.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday ordered the Department of Health to assemble a medical team and fly to Myanmar to help attend to thousands of families displaced in the wake of Cyclone Nargis' devastation.

"We are awaiting acceptance from Myanmar of our offer of assistance. But we are continuing coordination both through the Burma Embassy here and our Embassy there," said foreign affairs spokesperson Claro Cristobal.

"We want to be fully coordinated," said the official when reached by phone Friday.

The Philippine Embassy in Rangoon has been spared from the devastation, said Cristobal, and the latest dispatch from the post showed that none among 250 Filipinos based there has been reported hurt.

Unlike other foreign aid workers, the Philippine contingent does not require a visa to enter Myanmar amid all its government's reclusive rules.

A separate contingent of the Philippine National Red Cross has also been prepared for a mission to Myanmar.

Cadungog said Friday, the Air Force, which was tapped to deploy its C-130 Hercules cargo plane for the mission, has started coordinating with the health department to finalize the passenger list for the humanitarian trip.

The Air Force has also started drawing up the flight plan and getting overflight clearances for its military plane to pass through foreign air space en route to Myanmar, all while awaiting the latter's landing clearance.

"We still do not know the departure time but we will start processing the requests for overflights today," Cadungog told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) Friday shortly after receiving instructions from Defense Sec. Gilberto Teodoro Jr. to finalize the Burma flight.

PAF's Cebu-based 220th Airlift Wing, home of the C-130, estimated that the military plane could fly to Rangoon in five hours and 17 minutes. Cadungog has ordered the assembly to two air teams for the flight, each with a set of two pilots and three air crew each.

Cadungog has also instructed PAF operations chief Col. Roy Deveraturda and Col. William Ona, deputy chief of the Air Staff for Logistics, to supervise the Air Force crew in the mission.(Philippine Daily Inquirer).

1. Instead of having the usual Mother’s Day lunch or dinner, pretend it’s your Mom’s birthday, too. TGI Friday’s treats birthday honorees to a cake and hearty singing by the resto staff. Get one of the Ribs Ribs Ribs Menu on May 11 and get a special purse hanger for Mom.

2. Take your Mom out dancing! Groove to retro music she sure remembers as the band Amadeus plays ’70s and ’80s music every Friday at Chef & Brewer Café and Restaurant, located at AIC Gold Tower, Emerald Ave., Ortigas Center.

More than one million homeless in Myanmar were battling to stave off disease and hunger Thursday, with the military government still limiting foreign assistance six days after a massive cyclone.

With death toll estimates near 100,000 and the clock ticking for those who survived, Myanmar's junta -- long suspicious of the outside world -- came under new pressure to fully open up to help from abroad.

Aid was only trickling in despite warnings that specialists were needed to deliver food and water through disaster zones strewn with rotting bodies, and it was unclear if the regime was giving visas to foreign aid staff.

The United States, one of the junta's most vocal critics, announced it was not sending an aid flight after earlier saying it was, adding to the sense of confusion and frustration over the international relief effort.

Aid groups said the country needs hundreds of planes to cope with Cyclone Nargis, which barrelled into Myanmar overnight Friday, unleashing one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory.

They said help was slowly arriving from Thailand, China and India, but not enough -- and not quickly enough -- for most of those in the stricken southwest Irrawaddy delta who saw their villages ripped apart or washed away.

The United Nations said four disaster experts received permission to travel to Myanmar, but there was no immediate word for hundreds of others awaiting a green light from the military, which has ruled the former Burma since 1962.

In a rare break from its policy of non-interference in its members' affairs, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) pressed the junta to soften its stance, as did China, Myanmar's most powerful ally.

ASEAN secretary general Surin Pitsuwan said the regime needed to work with the international aid community "before it's too late."

"It's very much a matter of urgency," he said.

Authorities in Yangon raised their official death toll to nearly 23,000 late Wednesday, with state media saying more than 42,000 others were missing.

But a military official in the delta township of Labutta estimated 80,000 dead there alone, and many families there told an AFP reporter most of their relatives had been killed.

"The storm came into our village," said one man in his 20s, "and a giant wave washed in, dragging everything into the sea.

"Houses collapsed, buildings collapsed, and people were swept away. I only survived by hanging on to a big tree." His wife and two children died.

"The waves were so strong, they ripped off all my clothes. I was left naked hanging in a tree," said one teenager.

Around 5,000 square kilometers (1,930 square miles) remain underwater, and more than a million homeless need emergency relief, a UN spokesman said.

"The bottle-neck (in aid) is getting it out in the delta. That needs boats, helicopters, trucks," said Richard Horsey, a Bangkok-based spokesman with the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Shari Villarosa, US charge d'affaires in Myanmar's main city Yangon, said there could be more than 100,000 dead in the Irrawaddy delta, where 95 percent of buildings were reported to have disappeared.

Food prices in Myanmar, already one of the most impoverished nations in the world, have soared. A bag of rice now costs 40,000 kyats ($35) in the commercial hub Yangon, up from 25,000 last week.

Petrol on the black market, where most people obtain their fuel, has more than doubled.

Frustrated aid agencies said they are still being denied permission to enter Myanmar and use their experience and expertise to ensure the right aid gets to the neediest places as soon as possible.

The UN's head of emergency relief, John Holmes, told the BBC 30 countries had offered assistance, adding up to well over $30 million.

In Labutta, an AFP reporter said there was hardly any food or fresh water left and, as the waters receded, countless corpses have been left rotting in the heat alongside the bloated carcasses of animals.

In some remote villages, residents said rotting corpses were stacking up -- posing the risk of disease -- because they did not have enough fuel to cremate them.

A man who gave P5 to an eight-year-old girl after raping her in Tondo in 2002 was sentenced to reclusion perpetua or a maximum of 40 years’ imprisonment by a Manila court on Thursday.

Judge Silverio Castillo of the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 48 found Ronaldo Boneo alias "Onat" guilty of rape based on the young victim's positive identification of him as the perpetrator 15 minutes after the assault.

Records showed that on February 6, 2002, the girl came home with P5 in her hand and told her uncle that a man forcibly took her in a sugar warehouse, raped her and gave her the money afterward.

In a 14-page decision, the court stressed that the testimony of a young rape victim "deserves full credit."

The court said the P5 was a bribe meant to placate the child. It added that the child could not have invented her narration, given her innocence about sex.

Aside from the medico-legal evidence supporting the victim's claims, the court also stressed that the girl easily pointed to her attacker in a billiard hall where she was taken by her uncle upon learning of the crime.

"The identification of the suspect-accused took place 15 minutes after the incident. In other words, the identity and the physical appearance of the accused was still fresh in the mind of the victim who is of tender age at the time of commission," said Castillo.

The judge said Boneo merely denied the accusations, and that he remained silent, which the judge took to be "implied admission."

In cases of rape involving women below 12 years old, "the absence of free consent is presumed," the judge said.

Apart from meting 40 years imprisonment, the court also ordered Boneo to pay the victim's legal expenses.(Philippine Daily Inquirer)

The top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar says the death toll may reach 100,000 from a cyclone and its aftermath. She said the country's military junta is "paranoid," about the United States but is not blocking American aid in retaliation for past criticism.

U.S. charge d'affaires Shari Villarosa estimates show 95 percent of buildings in the affected area are demolished, bridges are washed out. She called the situation outside the former capital Yangon "increasingly horrendous," citing relief agency reports of shortages of food and drinking water.

"There is a very real risk of disease outbreaks as long as this continues," Villarosa told reporters in a telephone call from Yangon. The death toll could hit or exceed 100,000 as humanitarian conditions worsen, she said.

She said that almost all the deaths are in the delta area. In Yangon, some 600-700 people may have died, she said.

The U.S. military has put people and airplanes into position to work on any relief effort, as officials awaited word on whether the Asian nation would accept American help.
Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday that Myanmar must let the international community in to help. She said the aid is to meet the needs of a humanitarian crisis, and not a matter of politics, Reuters reported.

Villarosa did not sound optimistic.

"It's a very paranoid regime," she said. "They are very paranoid about the United States."

She said lower reaches of the Myanmar regime appear to recognize the magnitude of the problem, but the senior leadership is isolated and has not yet announced a final decision on how to handle outside aid.

She said she met with three ministers this week and is pressing hard to allow U.S. aid into the country. The junta is blocking aid from other nations, and does not appear to be singling out the United States because of the White House focus on human rights and other abuses in Myanmar, she said.

Metro Manila workers will finally get their much awaited salary increase next week.

A ranking labor official yesterday reported that the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Metro Manila is expected to come out with a new wage order by May 15.

“All the wage boards are already conducting the public hearings and deliberations and at least the wage board in the National Capital Region (NCR) is expected to render a decision by May 15,” said an official of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) who requested anonymity.

Acting Labor Secretary Marianito Roque noted that the wage boards are fast-tracking the procedures on wage fixing but he declined to reveal the date when the wage boards are coming out with their decisions.

“Everything is moving and they’re moving fast,” Roque said in an interview.

He said the wage boards are exerting all effort to grant salary increases at the soonest possible time to help workers cope with the rising cost of essential commodities.

Roque also expressed confidence that the wage boards would be able to come up with decisions that are beneficial to both workers and employers.

“It would be very difficult, but they (employers and workers) have to agree somewhere in the middle,” Roque pointed out.

Earlier, employers warned against granting excessive salary increases while the workers cautioned against measly adjustments.

However, Roque said that even with a minimal wage increase, workers would be experiencing economic relief with the impending passage of a law exempting minimum wage earners from paying taxes.

“DOLE is pushing for the tax exemption law because it would provide between P32 to P38 increase in daily pay and that’s already substantial even with minimal salary adjustments,” he said.

He added that DOLE is also working with employers nationwide to provide their workers with other non-wage benefits such as free transportation and day care centers.

“So far, employers are positively responding to our appeal to provide their workers with additional non-wage benefits,” Roque said.

Meanwhile, DOLE reported that a majority of commercial establishments nationwide are giving social protection to their workers.

Data from DOLE’s Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics (BLES) showed that vital compulsory social protection and benefits to workers, like SSS, GSIS, PhilHealth and Pag-Ibig, were provided by almost all of the 25,349 establishments in the non-agricultural sector nationwide.

“Results of the survey demonstrate that the country’s establishments are keeping pace with the government’s mandates for the comprehensive social protection of workers, by taking efforts to comply with and pursue such relevant compensation schemes necessary for the welfare and well-being of the nation’s workforce,” Roque said.(Phil. The first and largest transport strike to be spearheaded by the biggest transport group â€" the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON) â€" will be held this month to protest surging oil prices and lobby for the junking of the 12-percent expanded value added tax (EVAT).

PISTON secretary-general George San Mateo, in a press statement, said this will be the first time that transport holidays in the country will be joined by cooperative organizations and all kinds of public vehicles.

He said two groups had already committed to participate in the protest action, along with other transport organizations under the United Transport Koalisyon (1-UTAK).

San Mateo said they are in constant talks with transport group leaders like Zeny Maranan of the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations of the Philippines (FEJODAP) to iron out the final date and issues to be tackled in the planned protest.

Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes vowed he would not allow oil firms to impose “unreasonable prices” for their products.

While admitting the government cannot dictate the prices of fuel products under the oil deregulation law, Reyes said they would ask the oil firms to be more transparent and reasonable in implementing prices.

“The regime of high oil prices is a reality and the government will ensure that oil companies are in compliance with existing laws and regulations. We will not allow unreasonable pricing,” he said.

Reyes made the statement following a meeting with representatives of oil companies and other stakeholders held at the Department of Energy last Monday.

As an additional measure, Reyes said Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile is drafting an anti-trust law to prevent monopoly in the oil business.

“In the long-term, we are instituting measures that will lessen the country’s dependence on oil imports, such as pushing for the development and increased contribution of renewable energy to our energy mix,” he said.

During the meeting, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. country chairman Edgar Chua presented a cost breakdown of their products and enumerated the factors affecting prices.

The representatives of oil companies present during the meeting collectively claimed they have to impose the new increases for their “under-recovery” due to the continued increase in the price of crude and diesel in the international market.

This would explain the weekly increase of 50 centavos per liter in pump prices.

Chua added that based on a purely cost point of view, oil companies would need to recover an additional P6 per liter and more adjustments will be made in the coming weeks.

In estimating how much pump prices will increase, Chua said the competitive nature of the oil industry, as well as the sensitivity of the public, will be taken into consideration.

While oil companies are now occupied with breaking even in their operations, Chua said they are aware of their social responsibility to the public and the adverse effects of implementing a new round of increase.

Showbiz & Celebrity / Mariah Carey Is Married
May 06, 2008, 07:10:15 PM
Call her Mrs. Cannon. Mariah Carey indeed married actor Nick Cannon last week down in the Bahamas.

Even though there were several unsourced reports at the end of last week, I can now confirm the wedding did take place.

Carey, according to her friends, is "blissful."

"She's never been comfortable talking about her personal life," said one friend. That would make her unique among celebrities. Maybe more celebs should follow her lead.

Carey is 39, so she probably heard her biological clock ticking. Cannon is a nice guy. I met him when he did the movie "Bobby" and he was an articulate, literate young man.

So congrats to Mariah, who friends say had a true "Vision of Love."

WOODBINE, Ga.  â€"  Authorities in southeastern Georgia have arrested a 22-year-old man who told a police dispatcher that he killed his parents.

Camden County Sheriff's Lt. Williams Terrell says Tye Christopher Watkins called 911 Monday morning and told the dispatcher: "I just killed my parents."

Deputies responded to the home in an affluent waterfront neighborhood about 40 miles north of Jacksonville, Fla., and near the Navy's submarine base at Kings Bay.

They found 47-year-old Thomas Jefferson "TJ" Watkins and 44-year-old Cindy Trott Watkins dead of multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators are trying to determine what prompted the shootings.

Watkins was in custody and scheduled for an arraignment on Tuesday. Authorities did not know Monday afternoon if he had retained an attorney.

CAIRO, Egypt â€"  Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein feared catching AIDS or some other venereal disease during his U.S.-supervised captivity, according to excerpts of his prison writings published in a leading Arab newspaper Monday.

The London-based pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat published excerpts of what it described as Saddam's prison dairies which it said its correspondent obtained from U.S. authorities.

The U.S. military confirmed that pages of Saddam's writings have been released.

When the former Iraqi leader found out that his U.S. military guards were also using his laundry line to dry clothes, he wrote that he demanded they stop.

"I explained to them that they are young and they could have young people's diseases," Saddam wrote. "My main concern was to not catch a venereal disease, an HIV disease, in this place." He said that some of the soldiers ignored his request.

U.S. military spokesman in Iraq, Maj. Matthew Morgan declined to describe the writings as a 'diary,' saying that thousands of pages having been produced by the former leader while he was in custody.

"The select material that has been previously released was viewed here by Arabic speakers and reported on accordingly," he said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Saddam was captured by U.S. forces in December 2003, the same year that a U.S.-led invasion toppled his regime. He was tried and convicted for crimes against humanity by an Iraqi tribunal and then executed at the end of 2006.

He described having an intimate conversation with his American doctor about women and how his English gradually improved by talking to his captors.

"I was speaking it using my hands and signs if I could not find the exact word," he wrote. "But our language (Arabic) is more beautiful and deeper."

Saddam also wrote how hard it was to have to ask for things, such as once when he requested a flower.

"It was a serious sacrifice from me to ask for the first time in my life," he wrote.

In April 2004, the world had the first glimpses of Saddam's cell when an American and a British tabloid printed pictures of him emerging from the bathroom in his underwear after washing his clothes.

The newspapers, the Sun in London and the New York Post said the pictures were provided by American military sources to "undermine the Iraqi rebellion."

Al-Hayat also published excerpts from what it described as poetry written by Saddam in his prison.( Associated Press)

FORT WORTH, Texas â€"  A Roman Catholic priest who had sex with two inmates while working as a chaplain at a women's prison was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison.

Vincent Inametti, 48, was taken into custody after he was sentenced, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in its online edition Monday.

Inametti, who is originally from Nigeria, had worked at Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth for seven years until last fall, according to documents filed in the case. He pleaded guilty in November to two counts of sexual abuse of a ward.

Although he faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, Inametti's lack of a criminal history suggested that he might get a sentence between 10 and 16 months.

But U.S. District Judge Terry Means said Inametti had violated trust as an employee of the federal prison and as a priest.

"For this he will face a higher authority than this one," Means said.

Both women were serving federal sentences for drug distribution conspiracy convictions. One met Inametti in 2004 after attending church services and becoming involved in the choir and Bible study classes, authorities said. The other met the priest a few months later after being assigned as a clerk for the prison's religious services department.

Inametti is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was ordained in his native country, Nigeria, according to documents filed in the case.(CNN news)

OLPE, Germany â€"  The bodies of three German infants have been found stuffed in a basement freezer and their mother has been arrested, a prosecutor's spokesman said Monday.

Johannes Daheim said police determined the three infants had not been stillborn but did not say how old they were or what the cause of death was. He said the bodies were found Sunday night after police received a tip and searched the home in Wenden in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The name of the woman was not released. Police said they planned to hold a news conference about the case later Monday.

There have been a number of similar cases in Germany.

In February, police were called to a home in northern Germany where a dead infant was discovered in the cellar.

In January, a 28-year-old German woman was charged with manslaughter after the remains of three babies were discovered in her house and the home of a relative. That woman has denied killing the three babies.

Another woman was convicted of manslaughter in 2006 for killing eight of her babies in eastern Germany.

YANGON, Myanmar â€"  More than 350 people were killed and thousands of homes were destroyed by a powerful cyclone that swept through Myanmar, state-run media said Sunday.

Five regions of the impoverished country have been declared disaster zones following the storm, which struck early Saturday, the military-run Myaddy television station said.

State-run television reported that 241 people died in the storm, nearly 222 of them from the country's low-lying Irrawaddy delta. The rest were killed in Yangon, which was devastated and left without electricity.
"The Irrawaddy delta was hit extremely hard not only because of the wind and rain but because of the storm surge," said Chris Kaye, the U.N.'s acting humanitarian coordinator in Yangon. "The villages there have reportedly been completely flattened."

Kaye said he was told earlier in the day by the government that 138 people have died and that thousands of homes were destroyed.

The U.N. planned to send teams Monday to assess the damage, he said. Initial assessment efforts have been hampered by roads clogged with debris and downed phone lines, he said.

"At the moment, we have such poor opportunity for communications that I can't really tell you very much," Kaye said.

Witnesses in Yangon said the storm's 120 mph winds blew the roofs off hundreds of houses, damaged hotels, schools and hospitals, and cut electricity to the entire city. The state-owned newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Sunday that the international airport in Yangon remained shut.

Domestic flights have been diverted to the airport in Mandalay, it said.

"It's a bad situation. Almost all the houses are smashed. People are in a terrible situation," said a U.N. official in Yangon, who requested anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media.

"All the roads are blocked. There is no water. There is no electricity," she said.

Yangon residents ventured out Sunday to buy construction materials to repair their homes. Some people expressed anger that the military-led government had done little so far to help with the cleanup.

"Where are all those uniformed people who are always ready to beat civilians?" said one man, who refused to be identified for fear of retribution. "They should come out in full force and help clean up the areas and restore electricity."

The cyclone came at a delicate time for Myanmar, which is scheduled to hold a referendum May 10 on the country's military-backed draft constitution.

A military-managed national convention was held intermittently for 14 years to lay down guidelines for the country's new constitution.

The new constitution is supposed to be followed in 2010 by a general election. Both votes are elements of a "roadmap to democracy" drawn up by the junta, which has been in power for two decades.

Critics say the draft constitution is designed to cement military power and have urged citizens to vote no.
