The Maori were highly skilled warriors who counted both men and women in their ranks. They excelled in stealth and guerrilla tactics, and they trained using martial arts and several forms of dancing, the most well-known of which is called haka. The haka also induced psychological effects, designed to make the warrior intimidating and fearful of aspect. The time before a battle was highly ritualized, featuring fasting and dancing. Maori warriors fought to the death to ensure that there was no one left to seek revenge, or utu.

When fighting, they often stuck their tongues out at the enemy. This was an insult of the highest order, meaning “I will kill you and eat you.” It wasn’t an idle threatâ€"captured enemies were often eaten, after which their heads were preserved with head-shrinking, their bones were made into fish hooks, and their blood was drunk.

For centuries, New Zealand was locked in a seemingly endless cycle of warfare. These conflicts ushered in the elite Maori warrior class, tattooed fighters armed with several unique weapons who fought in bands of a few hundred men. Their principle weapons included the patu (a short club made from wood, bone, or greenstone), the waihaka (a polished wooden club with a notch for disarming an opponent), the kotiate (a double-notched flat club that chiefs also used in speech-making), the taiaha (a 1.5-meter [5 ft] club), and the toki pou tangata (a large, tomahawk-like weapon made of wood with a greenstone blade).

(BANAT NEWS)

Bieber ‘still bragging about Kerr’
Cover Media â€" 19 hours ago

Justin Bieber has allegedly bragged Miranda Kerr vowed to “make him a man”.

The 20-year-old pop star was reportedly attacked by Orlando Bloom in Ibiza last week after Justin allegedly taunted the actor about his relationship with the model, who split from Orlando last year after three years of marriage.

Various media reports suggested Justin had made a derogatory remark before the fracas.

And UK’s the Sunday People reports the pop star has yet to stop making bold claims, allegedly boasting Friday night that Miranda had once made the flirty remark about delivering him from boyhood.

Justin and Miranda reportedly struck up a friendship while the singer was performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2012.

UK newspaper The Mirror echoes reports this is believed to be the main reason behind his alleged altercation with Orlando, who reportedly tried to jump over a sofa and punch the pop star after he was taunted.

The Lord of the Rings star was reportedly then escorted out of the venue by security.

Justin later posted a sexy photo of Miranda on social media, followed by a photo of Orlando appearing to cry, which was later deleted.

“Orlando had heard that there had been some flirting going on and he wasn’t exactly over the moon about it, in fact he was furious,” a source told the outlet.

“At the time of the split it was certainly one of the motivations. He was, and still is, very cross about all of this. He can’t believe that someone he regards as a silly little boy has had this impact on his relationship. He is absolutely fuming.”

Orlando is meanwhile still on holiday in Ibiza, where he was recently seen partying with pal Leonardo DiCaprio.

The actor, 37, reportedly joined Leo at Lio Ibiza in the island’s capital last week, when he told The Mirror he’s being hailed a hero for allegedly putting Justin in his place.

“Everyone keeps telling me I’m their hero,” he was quoted saying.

A spokesperson for Miranda has not commented publicly on the latest claims.

I admit that loving a cat is a lot less complicated than loving a human being. Because animals can’t ruin our fantasies about them by talking, they’re even more helplessly susceptible to our projections than other humans. Though of course there’s a good deal of naked projection and self-delusion involved in loving other human beings, too.

I once read in a book about feng shui that keeping a pet can maintain the chi of your house or apartment when you’re not there; the very presence of an animal enlivens and charges the space. Although I suspect feng shui is high-end hooey, I learned when my cat was temporarily put up elsewhere that a house without a cat in it feels very different from a house with one. It feels truly empty, dead. Those moments gave me some foreboding of how my life would feel after she was gone.

We don’t know what goes on inside an animal’s head; we may doubt whether they have anything we’d call consciousness, and we can’t know how much they understand or what their emotions feel like. I will never know what, if anything, the cat thought of me. But I can tell you this: A man who is in a room with a cat â€" whatever else we might say about that man â€" is not alone.

WHENEVER I felt embarrassed about factoring a house pet’s desires into major life decisions, some grown-up-sounding part of me told myself, it’s just a cat. It’s generally believed that animals lack what we call consciousness, although we can’t quite agree on what exactly this is, and how we can pretend to any certainty about what goes on in an animal’s head has never been made clear to me. To anyone who has spent time with an animal, the notion that they have no interior lives seems so counterintuitive, such an obdurate denial of the empathetically self-evident, as to be almost psychotic. I suspect that some of those same psychological mechanisms must have allowed people to rationalize owning other people.

Another part of me, perhaps more sentimental but also more truthful, had to acknowledge that the cat was undeniably another being in the world, experiencing her one chance at being alive, as I was. It always amused me to hit or elongate the word “you” in speaking to the cat, as in, “Yooouu would probably like that!” because it was funny â€" and funny often means disquieting and true â€" to remind myself that there really was another ego in the room with me, with her own likes and dislikes and idiosyncrasies and exasperatingly wrongheaded notions about whose water is better. It did not seem to me like an insoluble epistemological mystery to divine what the cat would like when I woke up and saw her face two inches from mine and the Tentative Paw slowly withdrawing from my lip.

“You’re in love with that cat!” my then-girlfriend Margot once accused me. To be fair, she was a very attractive cat. People would comment on it. My friend Ken described her as “a supermodel cat,” with green eyes dramatically outlined in what he called “cat mascara” and bright pink “nose leather.” Her fur, even at age 19, was rich and soft and pleasant to touch.

Biologists call cats “exploitive captives,” an evocative phrase that might be used to describe a lot of relationships, not all of them interspecies. I made the mistake, early on, of feeding the cat first thing in the morning, forgetting that the cat could control when I woke up â€" by meowing politely, sitting on my chest and staring at me, nudging me insistently with her face, or placing a single claw on my lip. She refused to drink water from a bowl, coveting what she believed was the superior-quality water I drank from a glass. I attempted to demonstrate to the cat that the water we drank was the very same water by pouring it from my glass into her bowl right in front of her, but she was utterly unmoved, like a birther being shown Obama’s long-form Hawaiian birth certificate. In the end I gave in and began serving her water in a glass tumbler, which she had to stick her whole face into to drink from.

Sometimes it would strike me that an animal was living in my house, and it seemed as surreal as if I had a raccoon or a kinkajou running loose in my house. Yet that animal and I learned, on some level, to understand each other. Although I loved to bury my nose in her fur when she came in from a winter day and inhale deeply of the Coldcat Smell, the cat did not like this one bit, and fled. For a while I would chase her around the house, yelling, “Gimme a little whiff!” and she would hide behind the couch from my hateful touch. Eventually I realized that this was wrong of me. I would instead let her in and pretend to have no interest whatsoever in smelling her, and, after not more than a minute or so the cat would approach me and deign to be smelled. I should really be no less impressed by this accord than if I’d successfully communicated with a Papuan tribesman, or decoded a message from the stars.

It’s amusing now to remember the strict limits I’d originally intended to place on the cat. One of the boundaries I meant to set was that the cat would not be allowed upstairs, where I slept. That edict was short-lived. It was not long before I became wounded when the cat declined to sleep with me.

I never meant to become this person. My own cat turned up as a stray at my cabin on the Chesapeake Bay when I was sitting out on the deck eating leftover crabs. She was only a couple of months old then, small enough that my friend Kevin could fit her whole head in his mouth. She appeared from underneath the porch, piteously mewling, and I gave her some cold white crab meat. I did not know then that feeding a stray cat is effectively adopting that cat.

For a few weeks I was in denial about having a cat. My life at that time was not structured to accommodate the responsibility of returning home once every 24 hours to feed an animal. I posted fliers in the post office and grocery store with a drawing of the cat, hoping its owner would reclaim it. It seems significant in retrospect that I never entertained the possibility of taking the cat to the pound.

When I left for a long weekend for a wedding in another state, my friend Gabe explained to me that the cat clearly belonged to me now. I protested. This was a strictly temporary situation until I could locate a new home for the cat, I explained. I was not going to turn into some Cat Guy.

“How would you feel,” he asked me, “if you were to get home from this weekend and that cat was gone?”

I moaned and writhed in the passenger seat.

“You’re Cat Guy,” he said in disgust.

I’ve speculated that people have a certain reservoir of affection that they need to express, and in the absence of any more appropriate object â€" a child or a lover, a parent or a friend â€" they will lavish that same devotion on a pug or a Manx or a cockatiel, even on something neurologically incapable of reciprocating that emotion, like a monitor lizard or a day trader or an aloe plant. Konrad Lorenz confirms this suspicion in his book “On Aggression,” in which he describes how, in the absence of the appropriate triggering stimulus for an instinct, the threshold of stimulus for that instinct is gradually lowered; for instance, a male dove deprived of female doves will attempt to initiate mating with a stuffed pigeon, a rolled-up cloth or any vaguely bird-shaped object, and, eventually, with an empty corner of its cage.

Although I can clearly see this syndrome as pathological in others, I was its medical textbook illustration, the Elephant Man of the condition. I did not post photographs of my cat online or talk about her to people who couldn’t be expected to care, but at home, alone with the cat, I behaved like some sort of deranged arch-fop. I made up dozens of nonsensical names for the cat over the years â€" The Quetzal, Quetzal Marie, Mrs. Quetzal Marie the Cat, The Inquetzulous Q’ang Marie. There was a litany I recited aloud to her every morning, a sort of daily exhortation that began, “Who knows, Miss Cat, what fantastical adventures the two of us will have today?” I had a song I sang to her when I was about to vacuum, a brassy Vegas showstopper called “That Thing You Hate (Is Happening Again).” We collaborated on my foot-pedal pump organ to produce The Hideous Cat Music, in which she walked back and forth at her discretion on the keyboard while I worked the pedals. The Hideous Cat Music resembled the work of the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti, with aleatory passages and unnervingly sustained tone clusters.

Biologists call cats ‘exploitive captives,’ an evocative phrase that might be used to describe a lot of relationships, not all of them interspecies.

This is especially true of childless people, like me, who tend to become emotionally overinvested in their animals and to dote on them in a way that gives onlookers the creeps. Often the pet seems to be a surrogate child, a desperate focus or joint project for a relationship that’s lost any other raison d’être, like becoming insufferable foodies or getting heavily into cosplay. When such couples finally have a child their cats or dogs are often bewildered to find themselves unceremoniously demoted to the status of pet; instead of licking the dinner plates clean and piling into bed with Mommy and Daddy, they’re given bowls of actual dog food and tied to a metal stake in a circle of dirt.

I looked up how much Americans spend on pets annually and have concluded that you do not want to know. I could tell you what I spent on my own cat’s special kidney health cat food and kidney and thyroid medication, and periodic blood tests that cost $300 and always came back normal, but I never calculated my own annual spending, lest I be forced to confront some uncomfortable facts about me. What our mass spending on products to pamper animals who seem happiest while rolling in feces or eating the guts out of rodents â€" who don’t, in fact, seem significantly less happy if they lose half their limbs â€" tells us about ourselves as a nation is probably also something we don’t want to know. But it occurs to me that it may be symptomatic of the same chronic deprivation as are the billion-dollar industries in romance novels and porn.

The cat was jealous of my attention; she liked to sit on whatever I was reading, walked back and forth and back and forth in front of my laptop’s screen while I worked, and unsubtly interpolated herself between me and any woman I may have had over. She and my ex Kati Jo, who was temperamentally not dissimilar to the cat, instantly sized each other up as enemies. When I was physically intimate with a woman, the cat did not discreetly absent herself but sat on the edge of the bed with her back to me, facing rather pointedly away from the scene of debauch, quietly exuding disapproval, like your grandmother’s ghost.

I realize that people who talk at length about their pets are tedious at best, and often pitiful or repulsive. They post photos of their pets online, tell little stories about them, speak to them in disturbing falsettos, dress them in elaborate costumes and carry them around in handbags and BabyBjorns, have professional portraits taken of them and retouched to look like old master oil paintings. When people over the age of 10 invite you to a cat birthday party or a funeral for a dog, you need to execute a very deft etiquette maneuver, the equivalent of an Immelmann turn or triple axel, in order to decline without acknowledging that they are, in this area, insane.

A Man And His Cat
By TIM KREIDER

August 1, 2014 6:33 pm

I LIVED with the same cat for 19 years â€" by far the longest relationship of my adult life. Under common law, this cat was my wife. I fell asleep at night with the warm, pleasant weight of the cat on my chest. The first thing I saw on most mornings was the foreshortened paw of the cat retreating slowly from my face and her baleful crescent glare informing me that it was Cat Food Time. As I often told her, in a mellow, resonant, Barry White voice: “There is no luuve … like the luuve that exists … between a man … and his cat.”

What are the contributing factors?

Fast food chains with their high fat sweet salty meals ? Softdrink and sugary “fruit” drinks manufacturers? Schools which allow calorie-dense and “empty calorie” foods in cafeterias and vending machines ? TV networks and makers of video games that have brought about a sedentary lifestyle to our children? Education policymakers who limit physical education in schools? Health professionals who do not educate parents and children about healthy lifestyle? Or could the parents themselves be blamed ?

Interestingly, data from a new survey of parents by ACNielsen show two thirds of parents blame themselves . After all , parents have control over eating patterns and activities of their young children.

A UK Survey reports 30% of mothers and 57 % of fathers as failing to recognize overweight in their children. Some parents show no concern at all for their overweight child . Parents from the high socio-economic strata were no different from those in the lower bracket.

What can parents do?

Treatment of child obesity includes not only the child but the family as well. Parental involvement is an integral component of its management. Family eating and activity habits have a much stronger influence on weight than heredity.

The first step is for parents to monitor their children’s weight. If they see that their child seems to be gaining weight much faster than his playmates or peers at school and his clothes don’t seem to fit especially around the waistline, then it’s about time to see a pediatrician .

If the child is found to be overweight, a healthy weight goal is determined. The best goal is not to lose weight but to lower the rate of weight gain as child grows taller and develops muscle. However, if the child is found to be obese or has health problems related to weight, a realistic weight loss is planned. A dietitian will be most helpful in setting how many pounds to lose and in tracking the progress every day.

FEEDING RIGHT TO HELP YOUR OBESE CHILD

Overweight and obesity are now impending health crises in the Philippines. For decades we considered our children’s weight in terms of normal growth and development. If our children were on the fat side we believed it will be outgrown as they grow older.

However, a local surveillance among kindergarten boys in a private school shows that overweight and obese children often remain so at follow-up after 5 years. Some even gained more weight. Researchers agree that the longer a child remains overweight, chances are he will become an obese adult. They also predict that, instead of seeing heart disease in the mid-years, the present children may succumb to heart attacks and stroke as early as their 20s.

What causes children to be obese?

Despite the complexity of genes and hormones, obesity is basically an energy imbalance , between calorie intake and calorie output, between food eaten and food burned. Calorie is a unit of measurement of energy in foods consumed and burned in physical activities. When a child eats more than his body and physical needs, the unburned calories from excess food are stored as fatty tissues. Consequently , body weight goes over what is right for his age ,sex , and activities. If unchecked, the overweight child could go on to become an obese child.

Child obesity in the Philippines is not just a matter of nutritional problem but is also a cultural issue. For one, the older generation of Filipinos has the penchant of indulging their babies and kids with food to be healthy. There is a prevailing misconception among older generation Filipinos that a chubby child is cute and healthy. This is also further reinforced by the inclination of parents to indulge their children with food and material things that they were deprived when they were young.

Health and Food / Child Obesity in the Philippines
August 03, 2014, 12:27:44 PM
Obesity or being overweight has grown in the last couple of decades into alarming levels especially with the prevalence of junk food and fast food across the world. Obesity worsens as it is also afflicting children at very young ages making them more at risk with diseases related to obesity such as hypertension, cardiac arrest and even psychological depression.

In the Philippines, obesity is also fast becoming a problem with the introduction and prevalence of junk consumer goods. Thus, Filipino parents tend to give everything that their children want unconscious that they are actually putting their children at risk.

Not just cultural, social factors also contribute in the prevalence of obesity among children. Gone when the last generation of fat kids were so attached to watching television. Today, this sedentary activity was replaced by computer and video games. Many children today spend most of their hours on computer or any internet access or gaming console seated instead of engaging in physical activities or sports that could otherwise help burn food. Parents are also so preoccupied with work that they would prefer to let their children be as they are â€" lazy at home playing computers. The result is fat lazy children who are exposed to violent video games and unfamiliar with any household chore.

Finally, the primary suspect for obesity is unhealthy food. Junk food, instant meals, instant juice, fast food like Jollibee and Mcdonalds, softdrinks, and junk snacks are prevalent and easily accessible to children, which are all continuously changing the unhealthy eating habits of children. Modern food is fortified with artificial ingredient, flavors, preservatives and chemicals that has a long term effect on the health of children. This explains why diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and other nutritional imbalance sicknesses are afflicting people at even younger ages.

Justin Bieber Repeatedly Humiliated by Leonardo DiCaprio

By Price Peterson

The news item that future generations will read about in leather-bound tomes marked with gold-leafed letters "LEGENDS" just keeps producing new and exciting angles. Yes, the Ibiza restaurant scuffle between elfin warrior Orlando Bloom and goblin royalty Justin Bieber was initially intriguing for how A-list it all sounded. Early reports had other big celebrities like P. Diddy and Leonardo DiCaprio not only in attendance but actually APPLAUDING Bloom's efforts to rearrange Bieber's face. Now a woman who was there, 20-year-old Spanish model Anastasia Skolkova, tells The Mirror that Orlando Bloom's dinner companion Leonardo DiCaprio may have helped incite the incident by openly humiliating Bieber in front of everybody:

Bieber said something to DiCaprio - I don’t know exactly what, because it was seven or eight metres away. Leo brushed his hands at him, like, I don’t care what you say. Yeah, he flicked him away.

At that point, obviously, an injury-free scuffle ensued when Orlando Bloom jumped over a booth and gave chase. But The Mirror points out that DiCaprio's curt dismissal of Bieber's existence was only the latest in a series of such slights. For example at the most recent Cannes festival, Bieber was partying shirtless in a nightclub and sent his people over to where DiCaprio was sitting in order to see if he wanted to "party" with Bieber.

Justin was nodding and smiling in Leo's direction, but Leo just shook his head no and waved him off. He thinks Justin's a little twit.

The whole fracas reminds me of the great PAJ (Pitt, Aniston, Jolie) triangle of 2004, a blueprint for celebrity heartache. After reading her interview in US Vogue in 2008 in which Aniston called out Jolie for being "uncool" for "gloating" about Pitt, our collective hearts cracked.

Turns out Bad Stuff Happens To Celebrities Too. It's merely a case of transplanting events and people, swapping Cipriani for a Scream pub. Fortunately, TMZ does not care about our ex's drunken text. And fortunately for me, most of my exes aren't really on social media, which allows for break-ups to be relatively dignified, playing out over a cigarette in the kitchen with my sister. But they are one and the same. And, as social media swells, it makes minor celebrities of us all.

It's precisely this relatability of celebrity drama that led a friend of mine into showbiz journalism. "Jen's subsequent relationship success and failures provide us with a benchmark for our own relationships," she once told me. If you were Bloom, what would you have done?

What keeps this story entertaining is the "choose your own adventure" element. We can choose what happens next. So Bloom, I'm choosing yours: pick up your bow and move to chapter five. Bieber is a hobbit and you're an elf, goddammit.

Accounts of the roots of the dispute outside the Cipriani restaurant on Ibiza vary wildly, but a friend of a friend of a friend (which is as sound a source as any) believes it was sparked by a flirtation, possibly more, between Kerr and Bieber in 2012 that finally manifested itself via social media in last week's gnocchi-and-a-knock-up.

Of course, the story is moving apace. One paper now thinks nine (nine!) people are involved â€" a "nonagon of love", if you will. But we know what happened because Bieber gallantly relayed events on Instagram, first posting a goading photo of Kerr in a bikini then posting a photo of Bloom "crying". After presumably relocating his soul, he decided to delete the Kerr photo before going to some parties with Kanye West.

Naturally, celebrities are now picking sides. As a one-time Belieber (bite me), my inclination is to choose Bieber's but I've learned my lesson, so I'm abstaining from judgment.

Because that's the thing with celebrities. On one hand, these people are abstract and interchangeable. But if we can learn anything here, it's that we are all the same. The narrative was as misshapen as break-up narratives are. Had the fight been allowed to unravel naturally, sans minders and DiCaprio, Justin "floats like a butterfly, stings like a Bieb" Bieber may have won. The truth will always be cloudy. But the fact remains: love is love and heartbreak is heartbreak.

Orlando Bloom v Justin Bieber? There can only be one winner

NOW and again, I find myself looking in the mirror and not seeing Miranda Kerr looking back. Sure, we both like almonds and yoga, but that's where it ends. I have a broken nose, she does not. I could go on, but I won't.

Last week, the Australian model reportedly found herself at the centre of an actual, physical fight between her ex, Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom, and rumoured former lover, the American singer Justin Bieber, refereed (it's thought) by Leonardo DiCaprio. This is the second time Kerr has had two men fight over her. Oh, our disparity.

History / Re: Pope John Paul I (d. 1978)
August 02, 2014, 08:07:08 PM
The Pope, it is theorized, actually died from a dose of digitalis administered in the medicine he was taking for low blood pressure. The Pope’s missing slippers and eyeglasses were presumably removed because they were stained by vomit when the poison took effect. Later, officials explained that the items had been taken away previously by John Paul’s sister.

It has been speculated that John Paul, who was already disliked by Vatican bureaucrats, was ready to clean up the scandal-tainted Vatican Bank of its reputed organized crime ties. So some find it suspicious that the bank’s president, Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, was seen hanging about the papal residence at an unusually early hour on the morning of the Pope’s death. Marcinkus deflected this by saying he was a habitual early riser. Suspicion also focused on the Pope’s secretary, who may have rearranged the Pope’s body to make it look as if he died peacefully.

To counter the poisoning theory, it is claimed that the Pope died of pulmonary embolism. He had been suffering from violent coughs and pain the night before. But embolism could not have killed fast enough to explain John Paul’s serene posture on the bed. With no proper autopsy, the case of John Paul I remains open. -- http://listverse.com/

History / Pope John Paul I (d. 1978)
August 02, 2014, 08:05:52 PM

The gentle, smiling Archbishop Albino Luciani, an outsider to the Roman Curia, was elected Pope in August 1978. As John Paul I, he immediately showed his humility and refreshing simplicity by refusing to wear the papal tiara or be carried aloft on the papal chair. It was thus a grievous shock when he died on September 28 after a mere 33 days in office, apparently from heart attack.

Conflicting testimony about his death soon raised questions of a Vatican cover-up, possibly murder. At first, it was reported that the body was discovered by the Pope’s secretary, John Magee, around 5:30 AM. It turned out that it was a nun, Sister Vincenza, who found the Pope in calm repose on his bed with some reading material in his hands. Such a posture did not suggest death by heart attack. No autopsy was ever performed on the body.

One of the big questions surrounding the current deadly Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is how the disease spread to humans in the first place.

In all likelihood, the virus was originally circulating among bats or possibly gorillas in the forests of western Africa. Some experts believe that the disease may have spread to humans via "bushmeat" â€" someone butchering an infected bat for food, say, and coming in contact with its blood.

The disease then traveled from humans to humans. One possible conduit is through certain funeral rites in which dead bodies are washed by hand, notes John Snow, an epidemiologist at Columbia University. (The first recorded case in the current outbreak was a doctor in the rural town of Gueckedou in Guinea â€" the virus then spread to those at his funeral.)

That's one plausible scenario, at least. But it's worth noting that there are all sorts of other complex factors at play here that make these scenarios even more likely to occur in the first place. In western Africa, for instance, deforestation is putting humans in closer contact with bats, who may be carrying the disease. So has conflict in Sierra Leone.

"Think of it kind of like speaking with chemicals," the video's narrator says, referring to the glandular secretions released by glands in a dog's anal sac. "In fact, this butt-sniffing action is just one of many examples of chemical communication in the animal kingdom."

Of course, a dog's sense of smell is famously acute--10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than our own, according to the video. How can the sniffer make sense of the glandular secretions released by the sniffee's anal sac--without the poopy smell getting in the way?

Dogs have a second olfactory system that's known as the Jacobson's organ. Its nerves direct the chemical information it detects directly to the brain so there's no interference from other odors.

Now you know everything you wanted to know about Fido's anal fascination--and more.

Why Do Dogs Sniff Each Other's Butts? It's More Complicated Than You Might Imagine

Why do dogs sniff each other's butts? The answer to that question is a bit more complicated than you might imagine.

According to a new video from the American Chemical Society (above), it's all about one canine literally sniffing out important information about the other--its gender, emotional state, diet, and more.

Breeding experiments are even less plausible, even if many movie-goers feel like participating. Anyone who's made it through tenth-grade biology will recognize that breeding with other species here on Earth -- all of whom are card-carrying members of the DNA club, and therefore closely related to you -- is not only difficult, it's guaranteed to be fruitless. And possibly illegal.

Trendy scenarists will often invoke the social concern du jour, and suggest that the extraterrestrials are here to save us from ourselves. Aside from the obvious fact that they don't know of such contemporary problems as climate change or nuclear proliferation (our newscasts haven't reached them yet), why would they be interested? I bet the dinosaurs would have wished for a bit of alien help in giving an asteroid a nudge 66 million years ago, but it seems the extraterrestrials couldn't be bothered. Are we that much more deserving?

No, the bottom line is that the only truly special things about Earth are likely to be our biota and our culture. They could learn a lot about either one by merely analyzing the spectral signature of our atmosphere or tuning in to our TV broadcasts, and they would save a king's ransom on fuel by avoiding actual travel.

Despite the dramas played out at the local cineplex, real aliens won't be itching to visit. What we've got, they've already seen, and the doorbell won't ring. We're not on their bucket list.

#11468
My impoverished reply is clearly disappointing, and the usual response by the filmmakers is to resort to two hackneyed incentives to rope in the aliens, namely (1) a quest for natural resources, and (2) breeding experiments.

Frankly, and not to rain on anyone's parade, neither makes sense.

Consider the idea that the extraterrestrials want materials for their industrial needs. It's nice to imagine that Earth is valuable as a mining claim, but what do we have that they don't?

A frequent suggestion is water. But that's silly: The universe is awash in water, thanks to the abundance of its two atomic ingredients, hydrogen and oxygen. Like Kimye and Kanye, these two elements are everywhere. Heck, there's more water on some of the moons of Jupiter than on Earth, and no one's going to get ruffled if you opt to remove it. But really, you can save the tanker costs by finding water in your own solar system. There's bound to be plenty.

Digging up other minerals and metals is similarly unnecessary and inconvenient. The entire cosmos is made of the same elements (and more or less in the same proportions) as is our local neighborhood. You don't need to import this stuff from light-years away.

Maybe they just need farmland? Like Captain Bligh, perhaps aliens are hoping to find a place to grow breadfruit, or whatever the galactic equivalent might be. Again, this is the kind of incentive that might work if you don't first need to traverse interstellar space. If you do, consider building orbiting greenhouses at home. They'll be cheaper, and the produce will be fresher. And honestly, if Earth's countryside is that attractive, why didn't someone plant a flag (or Klingon breadfruit) millions or billions of years ago? It seems that terrestrial real estate is a dog on the market.

Expedia's galaxy-wide website must be offering Earth at a major discount. In one movie after another, aliens decide to pass up competing Milky Way attractions -- including neutron stars, antimatter clouds, hot Jupiters, and a 4 billion-trillion-trillion-ton central black hole -- in favor of our planet. The small speck of rock we inhabit is more popular with tourists than Disneyland.

Even an abbreviated laundry list of invasion films will give you the idea: Independence Day, War of the Worlds, Superman II, Mars Attacks, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Killer Clowns from Outer Space ... They all share a common premise, namely that Earth is the bee's knees, cosmically speaking.

But really, you've got to wonder what would motivate creatures from other worlds to suffer a journey of hundreds of trillions of miles to visit our planet? It's a trip so relentlessly devoid of scenery, their spacecraft wouldn't need windows. Why bother?

I've been asked this question at least a half-dozen times by Hollywood writers, and the best answer I can muster is "I don't know."

Khan, 39, hailed as a "national hero" by the health ministry, had been moved to a treatment ward run by the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières in the far north of Sierra Leone.

He died on Tuesday afternoon, less than a week after his diagnosis was announced, and on the same day that the president, Ernest Bai Koroma was due to visit his treatment centre in the north-eastern town of Kailahun.

"It is a big and irreparable loss to Sierra Leone as he was the only specialist the country had in viral haemorrhagic fevers," said the chief medical officer, Brima Kargbo.

The west African airline Asky has suspended flights to and from Sierra Leone and Liberia as concern over the spread of the virus has increased since the first death was reported last week in Nigeria's coastal city of Lagos, home to 21 million people.

Togo-based Asky said it would no longer take on food in Guinea, where the outbreak was first identified. It said passengers leaving the Guinean capital, Conakry, would be checked for signs of the disease before departure. The airline added that medical teams would be deployed to screen passengers in transit through its Lome hub. The Lagos victim was a Liberian who travelled to Nigeria on Asky via Lomé.

Nigeria's largest carrier, Arik Air, has suspended flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone because of the Ebola risk.

The fatality rate of the current outbreak is around 60%, although the disease can kill up to 90% of those who catch it.

The doctor leading Sierra Leone's fight against the worst Ebola outbreak on record has died from the virus, the country's chief medical officer said.

The death of Sheik Umar Khan, who was credited with treating more than 100 patients, follows the deaths of dozens of local health workers and the infection of two US medics in neighbouring Liberia.

Ebola is believed to have killed 672 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began in February, according to the World Health Organisation. The contagious disease has no known cure. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea and internal and external bleeding.

Unknown gunmen kidnapped and raped a Filipina nurse Wednesday in the Libyan capital, medics and security officials said.

The woman was seized early in the morning as she was on her way to work, said the health ministry spokesman, and was released several hours later after suffering an unspecified "aggression".

But a source within the security services said she had been raped by her captors.

The ministry said the incident could push the Philippines to speed up the evacuation of its citizens, 3,000 of whom work in Libya as doctors and nurses, as the country sinks further into chaos.

The spokesman said that following Wednesday's incident, Filipino medical personnel had left hospitals in Tripoli to await evacuation.

On July 20, as the lawless North African country sank further into violence, the Philippines urged its estimated 13,000 citizens in Libya to leave and alerted them to prepare for a mass evacuation.

Several countries, including Portugal, the Netherlands, Canada and Bulgaria, evacuated citizens or closed their embassies in Tripoli earlier this week.

And France said Wednesday it had temporarily closed its embassy, and a French diplomat said 40 French nationals, including the ambassador, had been evacuated by sea along with seven Britons.

ZAMBOANGA CITY â€" The celebration of Eidl Fitr, the end of the monthlong Ramadan fast among Muslims, turned into a bloodbath on Monday when Abu Sayyaf bandits fired on two passenger jeepneys, killing 21 persons and wounding 11 others in the municipality of Talipao in Sulu Monday morning, the authorities said.

The military and the police initially reported that 18 people were killed, but Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela, spokesperson of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, said later Monday afternoon that “21 were killed and 11 wounded as of this time.”

No additional details were immediately available.

Muyuela said earlier that about 50 armed men led by Abu Sayyaf leaders Idang Susukan and Sibih Pisih ambushed two Tamarraw-type jeepneys with at least 50 passengers aboard in the village of Lumapid at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Raden Ikbala of the Integrated Provincial Health Office in Sulu said those killed “were men and followers of Talipao Vice Mayor Tambrin Tulawie.”

“The attack was perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf after the victims performed their Eid prayers,” Ikbala told the Inquirer by phone.

Muyuela said the attack could have been “retaliatory action against the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) for providing support and assistance to the military and police operation.”

At least 10 BPAT members were in the vehicles attacked.

Gov. Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao was angered by the attack.

“I strongly condemn this senseless act, especially that it happened on the day Muslims culminate the end of the month-long fast and celebrate the Eidl Fitr,” Hataman said.

“I have directed our security forces in Sulu to investigate the incident and make sure that those behind the incident suffer the consequence and face the bar of justice,” Hataman told the Inquirer in a telephone interview.

A man inspects a sinkhole formed in a house on July 19, 2011 in the north of Guatemala City. When neighbors heard the loud boom overnight they thought a cooking gas canister had detonated. Instead they found a deep sinkhole the size of a large pot inside a home in a neighborhood just north of Guatemala City. The sinkhole was 12.2 meters (40 feet) deep and 80 centimeters (32 inches) in diameter, an AFP journalist who visited the site reported. Police, members of the country's natural disaster office and water utility company officials came to visit the site. Sinkholes, formed by the natural process of erosion, can be gradual but are often sudden. Guatemala City, built on volcanic deposits, is especially prone to sinkholes, often blamed on a leaky sewer system or on heavy rain.

Matsuo had reportedly gone out to meet friends on Saturday afternoon, but her parents notified the police when she failed to return home at night.

The two girls graduated from the same junior high school.

Violent crime is still relatively rare in Japan but several high-profile cases in recent years have heightened public concern.

The city of Sasebo made headlines in 2004 when a primary schoolgirl stabbed her classmate to death.

In 2008 a man went on a stabbing rampage in a crowded Tokyo shopping street, killing seven people and wounding a dozen others.

That incident came seven years to the day after a knife-wielding janitor killed eight primary school children, leaving the nation in shock.

In 1997 a 14-year-old was arrested for the murder of two schoolchildren. The head of one of the victims was left in front of his school gates.

A 15-year-old Japanese schoolgirl was arrested Sunday on suspicion of murdering a classmate and dismembering her body, local media reported.

The suspect, whose name was not released as she is a minor, has admitted to strangling the victim and severing her head and left hand, according to the Kyodo news agency.

She allegedly delivered blows to the head of 15-year-old Aiwa Matsuo with a metal instrument before strangling her in the city of Sasebo, in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwest Japan.

The victim's body was found on a bed in the suspect's apartment early on Sunday and investigators discovered tools nearby, reports said.

The suspect, who lived away from her parents though in the same city, told police she acted alone in the grisly killing, Kyodo added.

"I agreed to meet with her foreigner friend because of the promise that they will help my family. I also want to be able to help my parents and siblings," kabahin sa affidavit ni Bea.
