Ray, what is your view in regards to Singapore's Capital Punishment methods? Would you like to have something like that implemented in the Philippines? (I place special attention on their anti-drug trafficking stance, your view on that too...)

McDonald's burgers are certainly cheap and fast, but you still might wonder why billions have been consumed when you see the results of our recent survey of 28,000 online subscribers who rated burgers at 18 fast-food restaurants.

Among the standouts were In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The biggest loser: McDonald's. Burger King and Wendy's fared better than McDonald's but far worse than the highest-rated chains.

In-N-Out Burger, which touts its fresh ground chuck, has 247 restaurants in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. Five Guys had 640 restaurants in 42 states. And McDonald's? 14,000 restaurants. We sent a reporter (not a trained taster, but he has eaten his share of burgers) to make an informal comparison of the fare at Five Guys and McDonald's. Here's what he found.

Five Guys
Five Guys The regular hamburger, two 3.3-ounce griddled patties, was served well done on a lightly browned sesame-seed bun. You can order any of 15 free toppings (the usual, plus options such as grilled mushrooms and jalapeno peppers). Bacon and cheese cost extra. The patties had a bit of searing along the edges, a chewy texture (the chopped meat was fairly coarse), and a beefy flavor. They reminded our reporter of minute steak. The meat was juicy but left an oily taste in his mouth. The bun was soft and spongy.

McDonald's
The basic burger was one 3.5-ounce patty with pickle slices, bits of chopped raw onion, and a dab of ketchup and mustard, served on a lightly browned bun. The meat tasted mild and more greasy than beefy. It was easier to bite through than the Five Guys patty and was uniformly round and brownish-gray. The major flavor came from the toppings. The bun was airy and bland.

Bottom Line
The Five Guys burger was bigger and beefier but costs about $5, compared with $1 for McDonald's. (Five Guys sells a one-patty Little Hamburger for about $3.50.) And the meat is made to order, not in advance, so we waited 5 to 10 minutes.

Close Up
Our reporter couldn't get his hands on an In-N-Out burger, but readers gave it high marks. "It always seems as though the burger was made moments before," one said, "as opposed to sitting under a heat lamp." The basic burger costs about $2.

We asked 28,000 readers who bought any burger on their last visit to the restaurants below: On a scale of 1 to 10, from least delicious burger you've ever had to most, how would you rate that burger's taste? Differences of fewer than 0.5 points aren't meaningful.

for me, the reason that it took him 5 months in attacking againt the defense of the allied forces was because his troops were badly outhustled in the 1st battle that's why they have to regroup and retooled their armaments plus the fact they were really outnumbered at that time being 2 (italy and germany) against 6 (new zealand, india, australia, britain, africa and france). they have to really ask re-enforcements from their central command since during that time, general rommel was considered as 2nd in command to hitler and can somehow act on his own. that's what was their fault is that lead to their defeat.

Newlywed man to divorce wife he claims faked leukemia to score free dress and honeymoon

She told him cancer was killing her and then said "I do" to a wedding bankrolled by sympathetic strangers.

An upstate construction worker now says his estranged Westchester bride's sob story was all a lie and that she conned her way into his heart - and thousands of dollars of gifts.

"I'm disgusted, I'm enraged. It was all lies," Michael O'Connell told the Daily News on Tuesday night.

The tab included a spectacular gown for Jessica Vega, a honeymoon in Aruba, a big discount on the wedding hall - and even the $4,000 bar tab.

O'Connell, 23, says Vega, of Yonkers, concocted a scandalous tale that snowed loved ones and strangers.

Vega, also 23, says her estranged husband smacked her around and that she had a letter that told her she had leukemia that she now reportedly admits may have been mistaken.

"I thought she was dying and my goal was to give her everything she wanted before she did," O'Connell said Tuesday night. "Now, I want to see the truth come out. If that means her going to jail, then let her pay for what she did."

O'Connell and Vega met two years earlier while both were students at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan.

Big-hearted locals stepped up to give the supposedly tragic pair an Aruba honeymoon, matching wedding bands and wedding-day makeovers for Vega and seven bridesmaids when her story appeared in a local paper.

"I don't know what to believe,"  hairdresser Rachel Taylor told The News. "If she's not sick and dying, then I'm happy for her. But at the same time, maybe she needs some help instead of free wedding gowns and honeymoons."

O'Connell has now filed for divorce, saying the leukemia story was a crock.

The groom admits he "slapped the fire" out of Vega during a fight when they split - and that he chomped on her elbow during an earlier blowup in Yonkers.

He says he fell for a phony letter from a Westchester County cancer specialist that supposedly confirmed Vega's terminal diagnosis. The Westchester Institute for Treatment of Cancer & Blood Disorders did not return calls.

The reporter who wrote the story for the Times Herald-Record of uptstate Middletown wrote yesterday that he listened in when O'Connell said he called the clinic and was told Vega was "never a patient" there. "Jessie would never do something so manipulative," her mother, Diana, told the Daily Mail of London.

The Newburgh jeweler who gave the couple matching 14-karat white gold wedding bands said she was baffled at the dark twist in the couple's tale.

"It's sad, it's just sad," said Kim Kavanagh, who owns Kavanagh's Jewelers with her husband, Tom. "We don't feel duped, or betrayed, we just feel sad."

Jessica Vega insisted to the Times Herald-Record that she had received the letter confirming she had cancer - after earlier saying the letter had been typed in front of her. She then stood the reporter up on a planned visit to get a blood test at her new doctor's office in the Bronx. The couple has a 1-year-old daughter, Ava.

The groom's dad told The News his son may now seek custody. "There's a possibility he'll get custody at this point. He would prefer custody," Chris O'Connell said.

A friend from Yonkers who asked not to be identified said she's outraged by Vega's ruse.

"We all felt betrayed," she said. "We thought she was dying. It was awful. For her to lie to us like this for so long is unbelievable."

She said she even called Vega, who works as a chef in Stamford, Conn., to confront her about the allegations. "She still refuses to tell the truth," the friend said.

TOKYO â€" A Japanese journalist held hostage in Afghanistan for five months managed to send out a message via Twitter that he was alive when his captors asked him how to use a cell phone.

Just days before he was freed, Kosuke Tsuneoka said one of the militants brought him his new cell phone and asked the prisoner to set it up.

The younger militants were more interested in accessing Al-Jazeera on the phone, but Tsuneoka shifted their attention to Twitter, successfully getting them to ask him to demonstrate how it worked. He then sent the two following tweets: "i am still allive, but in jail" and "here is archi in kunduz. in the jail of commander lativ."

"That's how I got the message out," Tsuneoka told a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, a day after he arrived safely back in Japan. "I'm sure they never thought they were tricked."

A couple of days later, the militants â€" whom Tsuneoka said identified themselves as members of Hizb-e-Islami but posed as Taliban to the Japanese government â€" set him free in part because he is a Muslim. He had converted to Islam in 2000.

The Japanese government said it paid no ransom to free Tsuneoka. He said he believes that because the captors didn't seem to be overjoyed at the time of his release or suggest they had received any cash.

During his five-month captivity in northern provinces of Kunduz and Takhar, the freelance journalist thought he would never get out alive.

"I thought I would be certainly killed, so I tried to prepare myself to face it," he recalled. His fear reached its peak in late June, when the captors issued an ultimatum to the Japanese government, threatening to kill him if their demands were not met within 72 hours.

When the time passed, and there was no sign they were going to kill him, he started to think he could survive and gain freedom at some point.

"Although it was frustrating that I didn't know when that might be, my fear of death gradually faded and I felt better," he said.

Tsuneoka said after that, anger rather than fear helped him survive the ordeal. Even though his captors fed him well and never used violence, he repeatedly thought about how he could retaliate against them.

"They are a bunch of thieves just trying to extort money from Japan," he said.

The rest was boredom. He had nothing to do but sleep, gaze out the window to see birds or count ants crawling on the dirt floor, when the young militants were not around to talk.

Tsuneoka was kidnapped in April, when he traveled to a Taliban-controlled area in northern Afghanistan, and was released Saturday night to a Japanese Embassy.

Tsuneoka had been abducted before. He disappeared in Georgia in 2001 and was held for several months by unidentified individuals, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. He was freed during a Georgian military operation.

Tsuneoka is the latest of more than half a dozen foreign journalists kidnapped in Afghanistan, including two French reporters who were seized last December in Kapisa province just outside Kabul.

Despite what he had gone through, Tsuneoka doesn't mind returning to Afghanistan.

"I'm ready to go back right now," he said. "But after all the trouble, I have to think how not to repeat the same mistake. That's the problem."

i was able to watch the movie. based on history the battle has 2 parts. the first part was on July 1 and ended July 27, 1942 where the allied forces composed of british, australian, new zealand, south african and indian forces against the axis forces of germany and italy headed the famous erwin rommel. both sides suffered heavy casualties however the allied forces was able to stop the axis forces from advancing. then there was a lull however battle resumes on October 23 and ended November 4, 1942 which is the 2nd part. in this part, the axis forces was soundly defeated.

A new PNP provincial director is slated to assume this week as Police Senior Supt. Rodolfo Llorca is on his was out to end his four-month stint as police chief based at Camp Dagohoy.

"Well, this is a normal part of the service wherein you are given a new assignment in the military," Llorca said when interviewed over dyRD yesterday regarding his impending transfer.

He said he got some "unfinished jobs" like his much publicized unique style in running against drug pushers which could not take off until words for his reassignment came the other day. He also envisioned to place the Bohol Road Safety Plan which was targeted to minimize the number of road accidents here.

Police Senior Supt. Constantino Barot Jr. fresh from his assignment at the United Nations peace keeping forces abroad will succeed Llorca. The incoming provincial director was previously assigned in Negros Oriental and lately in Camp Crame.

Regional PNP Director Ager Ontog Jr. is slated to administer the formal turnover of command by the middle of this week.

Llorca's reassignment came while the public awaits updates on the whereabouts of Bohol's most wanted robbery suspects, AlfredoTorregosa and Joel Nuez who reportedly escaped during the operation conducted by SWAT operatives in Loon town last Aug. 26 where six other suspects were arrested.

Llorca will end his stint here amid reports that Gov. Edgar Chatto has requested a new provincial director to be assigned here.

When asked to comment, the governor said it is the "prerogative of the governor to choose the PNP provincial director, one, whom he can work with for effective implementation of the peace and order measures in the entire province."

A highly placed source at the Capitol told the Chronicle that Llorca did not show up during two meetings of the Provincial Peace and Order Council convened by the governor as chairman of the body and another meeting of the Provincial Development Council. Llorca, instead merely sent his representative

The same reliable source said that with his "hands on" management-style, Gov. Chatto conducted consultations with key provincial officials as well as with the municipal mayors, including the rank and file of the PNP in reaching such move to transfer Llorca.

The outgoing provincial director recently got the ire of some of the officers of the Bohol Bankers Association after he recommended that the unserviceable SWAT van donated by the group be converted into a holding area for jaywalkers along CPG Avenue, this city.

Reacting to Llorca's statement, bankers president Rodney Lumuthang said the group will ask for the return of the van if it will just be used for such purpose.

Top US commander: Burning Quran endangers troops

KABUL, Afghanistan â€" The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warned Tuesday an American church's threat to burn copies of the Muslim holy book could endanger U.S. troops in the country and Americans worldwide.

Meanwhile, NATO reported the death of an American service member in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The comments from Gen. David Petraeus followed a protest Monday by hundreds of Afghans over the plans by Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center â€" a small, evangelical Christian church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy â€" to burn copies of the Quran on church grounds to mark the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States that provoked the Afghan war.

"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan â€" and around the world â€" to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Petraeus said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Muslims consider the Quran to be the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect, along with any printed material containing its verses or the name of Allah or the Prophet Muhammad. Any intentional damage or show of disrespect to the Quran is deeply offensive.

In 2005, 15 people died and scores were wounded in riots in Afghanistan sparked by a story in Newsweek magazine alleging interrogators at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay placed copies of the Quran in washrooms and flushed one down the toilet to get inmates to talk. Newsweek later retracted the story.

Responding to Petraeus' comments, Dove World Outreach Center's senior pastor Terry Jones acknowledged Petraeus' concerns as legitimate.

"Still, we feel that it is time for America to quit apologizing for our actions and bowing to kings," Jones said in a statement released by his church. "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats. It is time for America to return to being America."

The church, which made headlines last year after distributing T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil," has been denied a permit to set a bonfire but has vowed to proceed with the burning. The congregation's website estimates it has about 50 members, but the church has leveraged the Internet with a Facebook page and blog devoted to its Quran-burning plans.

The American's death brings to at least six the number of U.S. forces killed in Afghanistan this month, along with at least four other non-American members of the international coalition.

Engagements with insurgents are rising along with the addition of another 30,000 U.S. troops, bringing the total number of international forces in the country to more than 140,000.

At least 322 U.S. troops have died in Afghanistan so far this year, exceeding the previous annual record of 304 for all of 2009, according to an AP count.

Petraeus is asking for 2,000 more trainers and field troops for the international force, NATO officials said Monday. It was unclear how many would be Americans.

Also Tuesday, authorities confirmed the ambush killing of a district chief by suspected insurgents in the northern province of Baghlan on Monday afternoon. Nahrin district chief Rahmad Sror Joshan Pool was on his way home after a memorial service for slain anti-Soviet guerrilla leader Ahmad Shah Massoud when rocket-propelled grenades hit his vehicle, setting it on fire, said provincial spokesman Mahmood Haqmal.

Pool's bodyguard was also killed in the attack, and one militant died and two were wounded in the ensuing fire fight with police, Haqmal said.

Five children were killed and five wounded in Yaya Khil district in the southern province of Paktika when an insurgent rocket fired at an Afghan army base hit a home Monday evening, provincial government spokesman Mokhlais Afghan said.

Kidnappers also seized two electoral workers and their two drivers in the western province of Ghor, according to deputy provincial police chief Ahmad Khan Bashir. Insurgents have waged a campaign of violence and intimidation to prevent Afghans from voting, especially in rural areas, while some pre-election violence has also been blamed on rivalries among the candidates.

City of Salinas, California - World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight Silver Champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, who is also known as the "Barefoot Boxing Prince," received a pleasant surprise from flamily friends in Salinas upon his arrival yesterday when he was presented with not just one but two pairs of brand new Nike boxing shoes which he will use in training and in his first title defense in Cancun, Mexico on Sept. 17.

The two pairs of shoes were presented to the 24-year-old champion, a product of the Barefoot Boxing Program of then North Cotabato Governor Manny Pinol, his manager now, by Lloyd and April Rose, children of couple Dennis and Rose Maniwang of Balilihan, Bohol and Pikit, North Cotabato, close friends of the Pinol family who have made Salinas their home for the last 14 years.

Dapudong, who travelled to Mexico in a pair of fifty-peso rubber slippers in June to fight then World No. 1 flyweight contender Jesus Jimenez for the WBC Silver Flyweight title, was visibly touched by the gifts from the Lloyd Jaca and April Rose Maniwang, two pairs of blue and red Nike shoes.

"I will use the blue for training and the red for the championship fight," Dapudong said adding that the last pair of Nike boxing shoes that he received from Chicago-based sportsman Rolly Hiso has been worn out.

Dapudong, who is travelling with his manager, Manny Pinol and chief trainer Noli Pinol, will proceed to Los Angeles tomorrow, Sept. 6, to train for one week under Manny Pacquiao's former conditioning coach Justin Fortune in Hollywood. On Sept. 12, the team will fly to Cancun joined by retired police colonel Pat Pinol, the eldest of the 11 Pinol brothers involved in boxing, and supporter Rolly Hiso and his wife.

"We are better prepared now than we were the first time we fought for the title," said Manny Pinol. In his first stab at the world title June 19, Dapudong was informed of the fight only two weeks before the scheduled event, three days of which he spent lining up before the US embassy in Manila to get a transit visa.

In spite of the short notice, Dapudong surprised Mexican boxing when he knocked out Jimenez in the first round of the 12-round championship for the silver flyweight title, previously known as the interim title, of the WBC.

His fight against Uicab is expcted to be a tough one because of the Mexican fighter's slugging style.

"Uicab is a slugger and we are expecting this fight to be a very exicting one," said chief trainer Noli.

A victory over Uicab could lead to bigger fights for the humble and unassuming farm boy from M'lang, North Cotabato.

Science and Research / 10 Species You Can Kiss Goodbye
September 03, 2010, 11:33:12 PM

10. California Condor
A resident of the Grand Canyon area and the western coastal mountains of California, the carrion-eating California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) has a lifespan of 50 years, making it one of the world's longest-living birds. Because of poaching, lead poisoning, and habitat loss, however, it's also one of the world's rarest bird species--one that was almost wiped out completely in the 1980s. With the help of conservation efforts, 332 condors are now known to exist, including 152 in the wild.

9. Sumatran Orangutan
The smaller and rarer of the two species of orangutans, the fruit- and insect-loving Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is being pushed to imminent extinction by ... you guessed it ... habitat loss and poaching. While orangutans live for roughly 45 years in the wild, they also breed more slowly than other primates--a single female produces no more than three offspring in her lifetime--which means that orangutan populations grow slowly and are less tenacious when it comes to recovering from external threats.

8. Ganges Shark
This rare and elusive species of shark (Glyphis gangeticus) makes its home in India's Ganges River, where it has a reputation as a man-eater, although people may be confusing it with the more dangerous bull shark. One of 20 sharks on the IUCN's Red List of endangered species, the Ganges shark is highly sought after for its oil. Rampant fishing, habitat degradation from pollution, and increasing river utilization, however, remain the primary causes for its rapid disappearance.

7. Mountain Gorilla
Although mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) managed to elude discovery until as late as 1902, their populations have been so decimated by deforestation, hunting, and the illegal pet trade that only 720 remain in the wild, split between Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Virunga range of volcanic mountains on the borders of the Democratic Repulic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda. Civil unrest in central Africa, particularly in the Congo, add another wrinkle in conservation efforts.

6. Philippine Crocodile
Found only on the islands from which it derives its name, the freshwater Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis) is legally protected in its native country, although it continues to face threats from human disturbance, including habitat loss and accidental death by dynamite fishing. A 1995 survey found only 100 adult crocs left in the wild, making the animal one of the most severely threatened species on the planet.

5. Black-Footed Ferret
The only ferret native to North America, and one of the most endangered mammals on the continent, the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) teeters on the edge of extinction because human development has reduced their grasslands habitat to less than 2 percent of its original size. Because prairie dogs comprise 90 percent of a ferret's diet, the destruction of prairie-dog colonies due to habitat destruction, pest-elimination programs, and disease are huge contributors to the ferret's downward spiral.

4. Siberian Tiger
Also known as the Amur tiger, the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), whose former range included northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula, and Mongolia, is now almost completely confined to Russia's Amur-Ussuri region, where it is now protected. An estimated 350 to 450 tigers are believed to be still alive, although the persistent threats of habitat loss through logging and development, as well as poaching for their fur and bones continue to loom overhead.

3. Red Wolf
Smaller and more slender than its gray-wolf cousin, the red wolf (Canis lupus rufus) managed to survive the Late Pleistocene ice age but may not be able to slink by modern man. Once widespread throughout the southeastern United States, red wolf-populations have been so devastated by predator-control programs and habitat loss that the dearth of breeding partners has led many of them to mate with coyotes instead, further reducing the number of genetically pure wolves. An estimated 100 wolves roam northeastern North Carolina today, while another 150 reside at captive breeding facilities across the United States.

2. Western Gray Whale
Although the International Whaling Commission banned the hunting of gray whales in 1947, the Western Pacific population (Esrichtiius robustus) never recovered from unchecked whaling in the 19th and early 20th centuries: Out of the 100 western grays that remain, only 23 are reproductive females. Their only known feeding ground off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia has since been annexed by oil companies whose exploration and mining activities, including high-intensity seismic surveying, drilling operations, increased ship and air traffic, and oil spills, are driving the 30-ton mammals to extinction.

1. Sumatran Rhinoceros
The smallest of rhinoceroses (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) used to flourish throughout the rainforests, cloud forests, and swamps of India and Southeast Asia. Now critically endangered, only six substantial populations remain in the wild, where they're estimated to number around 300. The main culprits for their dwindling numbers? Illegal poaching--their horns can fetch as much as $30,000 per kilogram on the black market--and the rampant destruction of their habitat in the name of human progress. Another reason the animals are doomed: Zoos have found very little success breeding the rhinos in captivity.

Some scientists have speculated that effects of humans - from hunting to climate change - are fueling another great mass extinction. A few go so far as to say we are entering a new geologic epoch, leaving the 10,000-year-old Holocene Epoch behind and entering the Anthropocene Epoch, marked by major changes to global temperatures and ocean chemistry, increased sediment erosion, and changes in biology that range from altered flowering times to shifts in migration patterns of birds and mammals and potential die-offs of tiny organisms that support the entire marine food chain.

Scientists had once thought species diversity could help buffer a group of animals from such die-offs, either keeping them from heading toward extinction or helping them to bounce back. But having many diverse species also proved no guarantee of future success for any one group of animals, given that mass extinctions more or less wiped the slate clean, according to studies such as the latest one.

Then and now

Looking back in time, the diversity of large taxonomic groups (which include lots of species), such as snails or corals, mostly hovered around a certain equilibrium point that represented a diversity limit of species' numbers. But that diversity limit also appears to have changed spontaneously throughout Earth's history about every 200 million years.

How today's extinction crisis - species today go extinct at a rate that may range from 10 to 100 times the so-called background extinction rate - may change the face of the planet and its species goes beyond what humans can predict, the researchers say.

"The main implication is that we're really rolling the dice," said John Alroy, a paleobiologist at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. "We don't know which groups will suffer the most, which groups will rebound the most quickly, or which ones will end up with higher or lower long-term equilibrium diversity levels."

What seems certain is that the fate of each animal group will differ greatly, Alroy said.

His analysis, detailed in the Sept. 3 issue of the journal Science, is based on almost 100,000 fossil collections in the Paleobiology Database (PaleoDB).

The findings revealed various examples of diversity shifts, including one that took place in a group of ocean bottom-dwelling bivalves called brachiopods, which are similar to clams and oysters. They dominated the Paleozoic era from 540 million to 250 million years ago, and branched out into new species during two huge adaptive spurts of growth in diversity - each time followed by a big crash.

The brachiopods then reached a low, but steady, equilibrium over the past 250 million years in which there wasn't a surge or a crash in species' numbers, and still live on today as a rare group of marine animals.

Counting creatures better

In the past, researchers have typically counted species in the fossil record by randomly drawing a set number of samples from each time period - a method that can leave out less common species. In fact two studies using the PaleoDB used this approach.

Instead, Alroy used a new approach called shareholder sampling, in which he tracked how frequently certain groups appeared in the fossil record, and then counted enough samples until he hit a target number representative of the proportion for each group.

"In some sense the older methods are a little like the American voting system - the first-past-the-post-winner method basically makes minority views invisible," said Charles Marshall, a paleontologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who did not take part in the study. "However, with proportional systems, minority views still get seats in parliament."

Marshall added that the study was the "most thorough quantitative analysis to date using global marine data." But he added that researchers will probably debate whether the PaleoDB data represents a complete-enough picture of the fossil record.

Nothing lasts forever

The idea that rules of diversity change should not come as a surprise for most researchers, according to Marshall.

"To me, the really interesting possibility is that some groups might not yet be close enough to their caps to have those caps be manifest yet," Marshall told LiveScience. Or "evolutionary innovation" might happen so quickly that new groups emerged to increase overall diversity, even if each sub-group reached a cap on diversity.

If anything, the record of past extinctions has shown the difficulty of predicting which groups win out in the long run. "Surviving is one thing and recovering is another," said Marshall, who wrote a Perspectives piece about the study in the same issue of Science.

One of the few consistent patterns is that growth spurts in diversity can apparently happen at any time, according to Alroy. He added that the background extinction of individual species has also remained consistent - the average species lasts just a few million years

Of course, the ongoing extinction crisis of modern times goes far beyond the background extinction rate. Alroy noted that it could not only wipe out entire branches of evolutionary history, but may also change the ecosystems shaped by each species.

That means today's species matter for environments around the world, and so humans can't simply expect replacements from the diverse species of the future.

"If we lose all the reef builders, we may not get back the physical reefs for millions of years no matter how fast we get back all the species diversity in a simple sense," Alroy said.

LONDON (Reuters) â€" God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons."

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

"The Grand Design" is due to go on sale next week.

Rapper T.I. (Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. in real life) was arrested together with his wife for drugs possession.

T.I.'s arrest for drug possession on Wednesday could get the hip-hop icon back in jail, says Steven Knowles, a lawyer not representing the "Got Your Back" rapper.
T.I. and his wife, Tameka Cottle, were arrested in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Associated Press. Deputies pulled their car over after smelling marijuana and arrested them on suspicion of possessing methamphetamines.

The trouble comes at a pivotal moment in T.I.'s career and personal life. His film Takers, which he acted in as well as co-executive produced, opened in theaters at No. 1 last weekend. His album, ironically called King Uncaged, is scheduled for a September 28 release. He just married Cottle in July, and was released from a halfway house in March.

This could put his life on hold.

Lawyer Steven Knowles suspects that, if convicted, T.I. could face a multiple-year jail sentence. "This is big-time," Knowles told Yahoo! Music. "I really don't envy his defense lawyer."

Prior to serving three months in the halfway house, T.I. spent seven months in a federal prison in Arkansas for illegal firearms possession and possessing a gun as a convicted felon.
According to the Associated Press, as a condition of his three-year-parole, he was forbidden from committing another federal, state or local crime, or illegally possessing a controlled substance. Drug tests and participation in a drug and alcohol treatment program were also required.

The new allegations will not be taken lightly, said Knowles, a family attorney who has represented Britney Spears and Nicole Kidman, among others. "[T.I.'s] celebrity is not likely going to get him off of this," he said. "This is now a repeated offense. That's when even the celebrity get-out-of-jail card is not going to work."

Knowles believes T.I.'s celebrity will probably ensure a more stringent ruling. "In fact, for them to take it light on him now would look like over-favoritism because he's a celebrity, and I think, if anything, his celebrity may actually backfire."
Knowles believes that Cottle, co-star of BET's Tiny & Toya and a member of the ‘90s R&B group Xscape, could avoid jail time because of their children. "That is a big factor when it comes to sentencing," he said. "I can tell you from my experience as a family lawyer that celebrity or not, courts loathe to jail moms, particularly if there's not going to be a dad at home to care for the kids as well. This would mean kids would have no parents."
One important factor in determining a potential sentence will be the quantity of drugs in possession. "If [the] quantity is large enough to be selling or even sharing with third parties, that could make a big difference," Knowles said.

Before the lead-up to his 2009 jail term, T.I. starred in an MTV reality series, Road To Redemption: 45 Days To Go, which documented him speaking to kids about his regrettable decisions.

While incarcerated, T.I. taught a course on self-enrichment to inmates who were unsure how to prepare for life after prison. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Music, T.I. said it was too early to tell whether his course was helpful for the attendants because the real challenge of discipline arises after release.

"It's easy to be on the straight and narrow when you in the joint because it ain't no temptation," he said. "You don't really got too much room to roam. Now, once you leave up out of them gates, walk back out there in that free world, breathe that air, your mentality then -- that's what counts."

In July, he told AP he was more focused on positivity. "Right now, it's all about moving
forward, and just acknowledging the blessings that are here today. ... Just moving past the regrets of yesterday - the things that could've been done better," he said.

Unfortunately, for now, T.I.'s immediate future looks grim.
In the interview below, T.I. discusses the self-enrichment course he taught in jail, performing for Axe Music's One Night Only, his character in Takers, and his daughter's hip-hop group OMG Girlz.

anonymous sex, another term for one night stand is a casual sex between 2 persons who agreed to do the deed even if they have little history with each other or they just met. oftentimes in modern days it all started in the chat through internet, social networking sites or textmates. in the old times the most common venues are drinking sessions during bday parties, fiestas and other celebrations or much worse pot sessions. most people who got involve in here are no longer virgins and somehow these people who engage in this anonymous sex or one night stand like it because of the thrill of the act.

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) â€" Burger King Holdings Inc , the No. 2 U.S. fast-food chain, agreed to sell itself to investment firm 3G Capital for about $3.26 billion in a deal analysts said would give the restaurant breathing room to fix its business.

At $24 per share, the deal represents a 46 percent premium to Burger King's price before news of the deal talks emerged on Wednesday.

Including the debt that New-York based 3G will assume, the deal is worth about $4 billion, the company said on Thursday. The transaction is expected to close in the last three months of 2010.

"It looks like a good price for Burger King shareholders. I don't anticipate that someone is going to come in higher," said Telsey Advisory Group analyst Tom Forte.

Analysts said the deal's valuation -- at almost nine times its cash flow over the last year -- is a bit higher than previous restaurant deals and could pave the way for more acquisitions.

"The valuation is based on good fundamentals which Burger King doesn't have and probably won't have for another year," said Stifel Nicolaus restaurant analyst Steve West. On Wednesday, he issued a research note saying that a $23-per-share price would satisfy shareholders.

TPG Capital LP, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Bain Capital Investors collectively own about 31 percent of Burger King and will tender their shares into the offer, which is due to begin by September 17.

Under terms of the deal, Burger King can solicit higher bids from other third parties until October 12.

Burger King's private equity investors took the company public in May 2006 at an initial share price of $17.

Before details of the deal became public on Wednesday, shares in Burger King were down more than 31 percent since the end of 2008. McDonald's shares were up nearly 18 percent.

On Thursday, shares of Burger King were up more than 24 percent at $23.44 in morning trading and had gained nearly 15 percent on Wednesday. Larger rival McDonald's Corp rose 0.4 percent and Wendy's/Arby's gained nearly 7 percent.

CATCHING UP TO MCDONALD'S:
Burger King has lagged McDonald's and other fast-food chains as its key customer base takes a deeper hit from persistently high unemployment rates.

Last week, the company forecast weak demand during its new fiscal year due to the U.S. economy's slow pace of recovery and government austerity programs in several European countries.

West said going private would free Burger King from the distraction of pleasing Wall Street and allow it to make major changes to its business.

In particular, West said Burger King needs to remodel its restaurants, which he said are older and less appealing than those under McDonald's Golden Arches.

It will also need to invest in other improvements to better compete, such as the kind of point-of-sale technology that McDonald's uses to spot trends immediately, rather than wait for monthly sales reports, West said.

Forte said he would like to see Burger King's new owners stick with the company's "barbell" strategy of selling low-priced and high-priced food, further improve relationships with franchisees and remodel stores.

Burger King Chief Executive John Chidsey will stay on during the transition period before taking the newly created position of co-chairman of the board.

3G Managing Partner Alex Behring will also be co-chairman once the deal closes.

Lazard Ltd, J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and Barclays Capital acted as advisers to 3G Capital. Morgan Stanley and Goldman, Sachs & Co advised Burger King.

The fabulously wealthy heiress who lives in a Manhattan hospital room gave her longtime nurse cash to buy homes worth nearly $2 million, the woman's lawyer said Wednesday.

Huguette Clark, 104, gave Filipino-born nurse Hadassah Peri money to buy four properties, including a $700,000 house in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and a $500,000 home on a golf course on the Jersey Shore.

The generous centenarian, who's worth an estimated $500 million and owns a palatial Fifth Ave. spread, also gave Peri money to buy upper East Side pads for her children to use, MSNBC said.

Authorities are looking into allegations that Clark may be a victim of elder abuse or fraud.

Besides giving cash to Peri, Clark also reportedly showered relatives of her longtime lawyer, Wallace Bock, 78, with pricey gifts.

She gave a dollhouse worth more than $10,000 to his granddaughter, his spokesman confirmed. She also funded a $1.5 million security system for the Jewish settlement where his daughters live in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The gifts to Peri, 60, were tokens of Clark's appreciation for Peri's spending long hours at the hospital as Clark's private nurse, lawyer John Reiner said.

A paralegal who worked for Bock has accused him of fleecing his elderly client.

Bock's spokesman ridiculed the claim by Cynthia Garcia, saying she was only after "15 minutes of fame."

Facing irate customer’s everyday are the common scenarios encounter by any call center customer service representatives agents working as front liner or as part of the technical staffs. Because of the pressure of the work many health hazards beset customer’s service representatives. Among the top illnesses on the list are high blood pressure, respiratory problems, ear infection, voice problems, anemia, and carpal’s tunnels syndrome.

1. High blood pressure/ Hypertension
Many customer services representatives as young as 20-26 years old old and above already have this kind of diseases after subduing themselves in heated verbal conversation with erring customers. Most have a blood pressures of 160/120, 190/100 and other alarming Bps. Contributing factors are the lifestyles of most call center agents where trace from the stress brought by work, smoking, unhealthy habits and lack of exercises.

2. Respiratory problems
Most respiratory problems encounter by call center agents are due to bronchitis, pneumonia, Asthma and allergic reactions. It may be due partly with the environment of the call center itself being subdued for longer working hours in centralized air conditioned, carpeted floors, and proximity of each agent’s to each others are the breeding grounds for any communicable diseases.

3. Anemia
Studies show that bone marrow produces more blood at night and working during graveyard shift in a call center resulting in anemic body. Thus, many call center agent are more prone to iron deficiency anemia. Many women also collapse or faint due to deprivation of oxygen in the body.

4. Ear Infection/ Acoustic Shock
According to the Call Centre Management Association (CCMA) the basic cause of acoustic shock is a sudden, unexpected noise, often delivered at a very intense frequency. Call center operators subject to this noise from a variety of sources. Telephone equipment used in call centers produces electrical feedback, latent sonic energy spikes, together with faulty telephone lines, non compliant switchboards, turrets, and headsets. Obvious causes are the caller’s abuses such as screaming, shouting, blowing, whistles, background interferences at the caller location, or ambient noise in the operator’s location

5. Voice loss
Call center agent are prone to suffer from voice loss, resulting in increase of absenteeism. According to the Royal College of Speech and language therapist, increasing numbers of call center workers have been referred to speech therapist because they are losing their voices. Long hours and little opportunity given time to rest their voices, drink water or pee are some of the contributing factors. In severe cases, vocal strain can produce inflammation of the larynx, swelling of the vocal chords, or the appearance of vocal nodules, tumors or ulcers and removal of gall bladder. Other causes includes Sore throat and severe cough.

6. Ulcer
Long hours of working deprive call center agent to eat on time. Even miscellaneous break are often disallowed until the shift is over. Their should be an allotted time given for short nap or stretching the body or having a back or neck massage in a few minutes before heeding to work as this would lessen the stress by giving ample time which is non-existent in most call center company where the time is very valuable and any delay is detrimental to the company reputation and customer satisfaction as the first priority over the welfare of their employees where in fact they are the main assets and should be given due care.

‘Local boys' behind Panglao robs but PNP sees Kuratong Baleleng hand in 2 incidents

There's no question they were handiworks of local boys. But Provincial Police Director Rudolfo Llorca, in a radio interview, saw a more sinister angle. The local boys are under training by the dreaded Kuratong Baleleng for possible big-time operations in the Big City. This possibility was aired by the top provincial cop in the wake of a series of robberies pulled off in Panglao island the past weeks. The latest to fall prey to highway robbery was a Polish national last Thursday. While on her way to the Alona beach from this city, Natalia Piechowiak y Weronika, of legal age and a Polish national was on board a motor cab when men aboard a motorcycle motioned them to stop along the Dao highway in Dauis town. The driver identified as Jade Vallejos y Sayson, married of San Vicente, Maribojoc town stopped the motorcab after the two men riding in tandem sidled up and asked him to stop.

Brandishing a gun, one of the men poked his firearm to the driver and in no time grabbed the belongings of his passenger. The faces of the two men were covered. The ensuing stick up resulted in the foreigner giving in to the demand of the suspects. Among those carted away from the victim were a Macbook Apple laptop valued at 800 pounds; Nokia 5800 Mobile phone valued at 200 pounds; a rectangular purse with 1,000 HK dollars; 50 euros; P150.00 and other personal belongings. After the incident, the management of Dream Native Resort in Dao, Dauis offered temporary shelter to the victim. The driver was taken to the police station for questioning for possible complicity in the hold up. The suspects then fled in the direction of Dauis town proper.

Meanwhile, another robbery with attempted homicide took place on July 29 in Poblacion Panglao victimizing an Italian national and his Filipina wife. The robbery happened when two bonnet-wearing men robbed the residence of the Italian identified as Angelo Chiocchio, 75, and his wife Cresencia, 59, of Poblacion, Panglao. Forcing their way through an unfinished part of the house's kitchen, the suspects pointed a gun to the foreigner and when he resisted shot him in the chin. While inside, the suspects divested from the victims jelweries and other valuables of undetermined value. After the robbery, the suspects exited the residence using the same entrance when they entered the house.

The victim who suffered a gunshot wound in the face was rushed to the Ramiro Community Hospital, in this city, where he is now recuperating. Interviewed yesterday to confirm his radio revelation, Supt. Llorca said it was possible that the Kuratong Baleleng played a key role in the two robberies. The police theorized that a Kuratong member who is a Boholano is forming his own group in Bohol in preparation for big capers in Manila. This information was based on intelligence report his office received from the field. The Boholano Kuratong must have cooled his heels in Bohol while authorities are hot on their trails in their area of operations in Mindanao.

From reading into this, Ray, it seems that they are looking for skilled and professional workers: engineers, technicians, construction, etc.

Since it is in Guam and Guam is an American Territory (meaning they will be paid in American Dollars and thus susceptible to pay American Tax Laws, then the Filipino workers will be subject to the Minimum Wage Act, meaning they will be paid fairly...).

Civil Engineer Salary in Guam ranges from: $50,000-$56,000 (annual pay)
: This translates to about 2,300,000 - 2, 576, 000 Pesos (annual pay)

You'd think that an All-Pro safety who missed 11 games in 2009 due to a knee injury would be most concerned about other body parts, but Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Troy Polamalu(notes) also has endorsements to consider. One of his endorsements is with the Head & Shoulders company, which makes sense when you consider Polamalu's famed three-foot-long hair. It's a tribute to his Samoan heritage, and it's not something he plans to cut anytime soon.

Once in a great while, a Steelers opponent will try to use Polamalu's hair against him in a game (as Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson did in 2006 as Polamalu returned an interception), and it's quite possible that the concern over such matters was the catalyst needed by Head & Shoulders to insure Polamalu's hair with Lloyd's of London for $1 million, which was reported by the Associated Press.

Then again, it could be a publicity stunt. Lloyd's is famous for unusual policies that can be turned into media gold; the company has insured Tina Turner's legs, Keith Richards' fingers, the legs of noted Riverdance ponce Michael Flatley, the bodies of several professional wrestlers (including Ric Flair -- Woo!), Jimmy Durante's nose, and Celine Dion's vocal cords (they're also talking with Virgin Galactic about insuring space travel, if that ever gets off the ground). Polamalu's hair isn't going anywhere, but it's a nice press haul for company and endorsee.

And if you want to ask Polamalu why his hair is insured ... well, just don't ask with your eyes. He can pick that up pretty well.

A young man plunged 39 stories Tuesday from a West Side high-rise, crashed through the windshield of a sports car - and lived to tell about it.

"My leg! My leg!" Thomas Magill, 22, screamed after an apparent suicide attempt ended with his landing in the red 2008 Dodge Charger, witnesses said.

Magill was in critical condition Tuesday night, undergoing surgery for two broken legs - but those who saw him fall were stunned he made it to the hospital.

"He came down feetfirst at like 100 mph," said witness Andrew Petrocelli, 47, a maintenance worker across the street from where Magill jumped.

"That's a miracle if I've ever seen one. He should be a goner. It was like that movie 'Unbreakable.' That was this guy: unbreakable."

Guy McCormack, 40, of Old Bridge, N.J., owner of the crushed Charger, was doing construction work across the street when his car broke Magill's fall.

He believes Magill survived on the wings of divine intervention. Holding up a set of crystal rosary beads he retrieved from inside the car, McCormack exclaimed, "Here's what saved him!"

Magill's father, Thomas Sr., sent friends a text message, asking them to "pray for my son."

"He's stable now. We can only hope he'll be okay," the father said after doctors briefed him on his son's surgery at St. Luke's Hospital.

Magill, whose family lives on Staten Island, was once listed as a resident of the Manhattan building, West End Towers at 75 West End Ave. Neighbors said he studied music at Fordham University.

"I hate my life," says his Facebook page. Under the category "bio," he posted, "I'm over it," and he listed "being mean" and "making fun of people" as interests.

Police sources said investigators believe he jumped from a 39th-floor window or balcony at 10:45 a.m. He landed in the car's backseat and trunk area, twisted like a pretzel.

"He had his hands up in the air, like flailing," Petrocelli said. "Just when he's about to land, there was a boom and glass flying all over.

"The car saved his life," Petrocelli surmised. "He landed in there like a stunt man. It was amazing."

Magill hit so hard that his royal-blue Keds sneakers were knocked off his feet and one landed on the windshield of a car parked behind McCormack's Dodge.

"I'm shocked that he did that. He's an amazing kid," said Magill's Staten Island neighbor Francine Denardo. "He seemed so happy. He seemed so joyful."

While surviving a fall of 39 stories would be miraculous in any book, it's not unheard of in the city. Window washer Alcides Moreno survived a 43-story accidental fall on Dec. 7, 2008, from an East Side skyscraper.

Golf / Golfer's swing sparks 25-acre California blaze
September 02, 2010, 12:30:53 AM
You can use a golf club for all kinds of non-golfy purposes -- walking stick, fishing rod, club, to name three. And now we can add to that list -- firestarter.

Over the weekend, a golfer's routine swing in the rough at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine, Calif., struck a rock. Not so different from the way you play, right? Only this time, the impact caused a spark, and the spark set off a blaze that eventually covered 25 acres, according to the Steven Buck, General Manager of Shady Canyon Golf Course, and required the efforts of 150 Orange County firefighters, writes the Associated Press.

Wow. And I felt bad the time I shanked a ball through the window of a house too close to the fairway. That was nothing compared to this!

The golfer's name is being withheld, which is probably for the best, and no charges are going to be filed. Fortunately, it all could have been much worse. As it was, the blaze required both helicopters and on-the-ground crews.

The conditions were ripe for a blaze, with dry brush from a recent heat wave just waiting for the right spark. Like, say, one caused by metal on rock.

And now, your turn. This is going to inspire a raft of bad Sportscenter-esque "When we say he set the course on fire, he really set the course on fire!" jokes. So let's get ahead of the curve. Best bad golf-and-fire-related pun in the comments wins a round of applause. Go!
