In the past, every pinch of salt, dash of pepper, or spoonful of sugar required tremendous effort to obtain. Salt was essential in preserving raw meat and other foodstuffs over long voyages, so it was much more valuable than it is today. Salt caravans crisscrossed the harsh Sahara Desert, finding their way by reading the stars, wind patterns, and sand dune formations. West Africa, one of the poorest regions in the world today, was one of the richest from A.D. 800â€"1500 due to the abundance of salt deposits in the area.

The salt trade goes back even further. The town of Solnitsata in modern-day Bulgaria, the earliest known town in Europe, was a salt production facility that the entire Balkans envied. It is believed to have flourished from 4700â€"4200 B.C. on the strength of its salt imports.

As civilizations rose and fell, salt gained a lasting prominence in the human diet. It held such importance that we derived the word “salary” from “salarium,” which was the money that Roman soldiers were given to purchase salt.

Sugar, meanwhile, probably originated from New Guinea 10,000 years ago, where the cane was chewed like a licorice stick. Knowledge of this sweetener made its way to the Asian mainland, where Indians were processing it into powder by A.D. 500. The ancient Greeks mentioned a “kind of honey, like salt” and believed sugar was a medicine. Later on, Crusaders came back to their villages and castles in Europe, telling tales of the magnificent “sweet salt.”

European voyages to the Americas and Asia were spurred significantly by the promise of vast riches and a dash of spices, particularly black pepper, which only the rich could afford. Black peppercorn was also used as part of the mummification ritual of Egyptian pharaohs, and Ramses II was known to have had peppercorn stuffed in his nose. Pliny once complained that Rome spent too much on pepper, and indeed, 50 million sesterces were spent annually to import the goods from India. Pepper was such a hot commodity that it became known as “black gold” and functioned as an exchangeable currency. This was exploited by Alaric the Visigoth and Attila the Hun when they demanded over one ton of the spice in exchange for peace. -- http://listverse.com/

Health and Food / How a woman can take care of her vagina
September 23, 2014, 12:47:46 PM
by Rose Carmelle Lacuata, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 02/13/2014 2:35 AM | Updated as of 02/13/2014 2:35 AM

MANILA -- Women usually go to great lengths to make sure that they are beautiful and neat. Taking care of the skin and hair is easy, but how does one take care of her vagina?

On Wednesday's episode of "Magandang Gabi Dok," obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Mean Tabaquero talked about vaginal health.

She explained that it is normal for women to have discharges at different times during their menstrual cycle.

"During ovulating time, iyung discharge malabnaw, parang egg white. Kapag malapit na ang menstruation, mas malapot at buo-buo yung discharge."

However, if the discharge is colored, has a fishy smell, and comes with itchiness, then the woman might be suffering from vaginal infection.

Vaginal infection can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or a sexually-transmitted disease (STD).

Bacterial vaginosis is a common bacterial infection that affects women. Aside from having yellow discharge, women may notice a fishy odor coming from their vagina.

Women who suffer from hormonal imbalance, who are taking pills, or who are nearing menopause are more prone to vaginosis.

According to Tabaquero, vaginosis can be treated by taking oral antibiotics for at least a week.

"Mawawala na yung amoy in just 48 hours."

She added that in some cases, they also prescribe vaginal suppository.

Candidiasis is a common fungal infection that has almost the same symptoms as vaginosis. It can also be easily treated with one dose of antifungal medicine that can be taken orally or as a suppository.

Women with diabetes and those nearing menopause are more prone to this fungal infection.

Tabaquero explained that unlike fungal and bacterial infections, STDs are more difficult to cure.

"Kapag STD, we have to be more specific. Usually antibiotics pa rin pero depende sa kind ng disease."

The most common types of STDs that affect women are gonorrhea, trichomoniasis and chlamydia.

In terms of taking care of the vagina, Tabaquero explained that women shouldn't be too conscious about it because the vagina is a "self-cleaning organ."

She added that the vagina is naturally acidic, and lactic acid prevents bacterial and fungal infections.

A woman's vagina naturally maintains its natural acidity, unless the woman is stressed, is using pills, or is suffering from hormonal imbalance.

She also said that women can use vaginal wash, but it is not necessary unless they are menstruating.

"Ang mga Pilipino sanay sa mabango. Pero kahit hindi mag-vaginal wash, okay lang. Minsan mas nakakatuyo ang vaginal wash, lalo na kapag malapit na mag-menopause."

Tabaquero added that it is okay for women not to use panty liners, unless they are experiencing heavy discharge.

She advised women to change their liners every two to four hours to prevent infection.

To help protect and reassure Chinese tourists, Mr. Deschamps said, the city has beefed up security at popular sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, while instituting warnings in Mandarin to be vigilant against pickpockets on the Paris Metro.

The Paris police have also introduced complaint forms in Chinese.

Meanwhile, the tourism industry has redoubled its efforts to be more culturally sensitive. An online guide for hotels and businesses produced by the Chamber of Commerce for Tourism in Paris notes that for visiting Chinese, a “simple smile and hello in their language will plainly please them.”

While thieves and Gallic aloofness could be a hazard, some Chinese in Paris said they deserved some of the blame for the French reactions they sometimes provoked.

“The Chinese are used to spitting. We are used to snapping our fingers to get attention, or even yelling,” said Mr. Shi, the Chinese travel agency federation chief. “But if you do that with a French waiter, they will ignore you even more.” -- http://www.nytimes.com/
#10925
Dr. Ota said in an interview in his office that because China had been closed off to the West for so long, some Chinese travelers could be at risk for culture shock and depression when faced with the harsher realities of a city they had over-idealized. But he noted that the Chinese were less susceptible to Paris Syndrome than the Japanese, since they were fortified by a directness and an outsize sense of self that was similar to the French.

“Whereas Japanese are reserved, polite and formal, the Chinese have a strong sense of national pride like the French, and they are not shy,” he said.

Thomas Deschamps, the head of research at the Paris Tourism Office, said culture shock was particularly prevalent among travelers from Asia, who sometimes wrongly perceived the French capital as a museum.

“They watch movies like ‘Amélie Poulain’; they think all Parisians carry Louis Vuitton purses and smell like Dior,” he said. “They don’t know about the working-class suburbs, the overworked waiters, the grittier parts of the city. Paris is not a museum. People are busy, they are stressed, they are living their lives.”

Pierre Shi, secretary general of the European Federation of Chinese Tourism, said Chinese visitors were being preyed upon because they were known to carry large amounts of cash to avoid paying multiple currency exchange fees. Bargain-seeking Chinese tour operators were also booking hotels in Paris’s northern suburbs.

“Chinese tourists are attracted to Paris by the glamour, by the desire to buy designer brands, by an image of France as a country of philosophers and revolution,” said Mr. Shi, who runs his own travel agency, ID Travel Pro. “But now, they are afraid to come. Before, they wouldn’t think twice.”

Psychologists warned that Chinese tourists shaken by thieves and dashed expectations were at risk for Paris Syndrome, a condition in which foreigners suffer depression, anxiety, feelings of persecution and even hallucinations when their rosy images of Champagne, majestic architecture and Monet are upended by the stresses of a city whose natives are also known for being among the unhappiest people on the planet.

The expression was first coined 30 years ago by a Paris-based Japanese psychiatrist, Hiroaki Ota, after several Japanese visitors to Paris fell ill when their culture of politeness and reserve rubbed up against Gallic haughtiness.

A group of 75 French luxury brands, including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès, warned last year that high-spending Chinese tourists fearful for their safety could choose to go to Italy or Britain instead. Concerns about the consequences for the country’s vaunted tourism industry have intensified as the French economy has stagnated.

According to the Paris-based European Federation of Chinese Tourism, which represents 30 travel agencies catering to Chinese tourists, the number of group tours coming to the French capital has fallen 20 percent so far this year compared with 2013. The Paris Tourism Office said that a 21 percent jump in the number of Chinese tourists last year had nearly halved in 2014.

Chinese nerves were already frayed after a group of 23 Chinese on a tour of Europe were attacked in March of last year in the gritty northern suburbs of Paris just hours after they landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport. The group leader was injured, and the thieves fled with 7,500 euros â€" about $9,600 â€" passports and plane tickets.

After six Chinese students studying winemaking were mugged in Bordeaux three months later, Beijing demanded that the French government take action.
#10928
A growing number of Chinese tourists in Paris â€" armed with wads of cash, typically unable to speak French and still somewhat naïve about the ways of the West after decades of China’s relative isolation â€" are falling victim to their unrealistic expectations of the city, while also being victimized by brazen thieves who target them because they are easily identifiable as Asian, Chinese tourism industry officials here say.

Alarm that Chinese tourists are at risk from bandits is so acute that the Chinese government recently considered sending police officers to Paris to help protect them. Paris tourism officials said the proposal was shelved amid concerns over how they would operate.

The French capital â€" celebrated for its beauty, culture and savoir faire â€" still retains huge allure, making it the No. 1 destination in Europe for China’s burgeoning middle class and growing legion of millionaires, according to the European Federation of Chinese Tourism. Nearly one million Chinese tourists came to Paris last year, according to the Paris Tourism Office, spending more than one billion euros on everything from Cartier watches to meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, and outspending both Japanese and Americans on shopping. Now, however, Paris’s glittering image in China is losing its luster amid reports of robberies of Chinese tourists, according to Chinese newspapers and social media.

LOOKING FOR A FAIRY TALE On the Pont de l'Archevêché in Paris this month. The French capital is the No. 1 destination in Europe for China’s expanding middle class and legion of millionaires. Marlene Awaad for The New York Times

PARIS â€" Before arriving in the French capital, Wu Shuyun, a 56-year-old Chinese housewife, imagined Paris to be like a pristine film set for a romantic love story, picturing herself as a glamorous princess surrounded by elegant Parisians, decked out, perhaps, in Chanel.

Instead, Ms. Wu from Kunming in southwest China, said she was shocked by the cigarette butts and dog manure, the rude insouciance of the locals and the gratuitous public displays of affection. Though friends had warned her about thieves targeting Chinese people, she said she was nevertheless surprised when a member of her tour group was mugged on a packed Metro car, as other riders watched.

“For the Chinese, France has always been romantic, mysterious and desirable. We have been told that ‘God lives in France,’ ” she said recently after a two-week tour that included stops at the Eiffel Tower and Galeries Lafayette, an imposing, upscale department store with stained-glass domes where tour buses stop hourly to deposit tourists for marathon shopping sessions. “Once I realized that the Parisians were indifferent, I made the decision: Try to make the most of this trip, but never come back to Paris again.”

Citing a recent study by the foundation, Bernardo said 38 percent of ARMM’s voting population (or 715,288 of 1.88 million voters in 2010) are illiterate.

“If you are a businessman building a hotel, who will you hire? Will it be the illiterate natives or the literate workers from outside ARMM? Once Tagalogs, Ilonggos, Ilocanos and Cebuanos land jobs and benefit from a peace agreement that should be enjoyed by the local communities, would that improve our conflict situation or will it create another issue of conflict?” said Bernardo, who represented her mother, former Sen. Santanina Rasul, in the conference.

Adults willing to sit for months in village assemblies to learn how to read, write and count, responded well when teachers used concepts like “peace” or “kapayapaan” in lessons.

“We introduced concepts like ‘human rights,’ and even ‘autonomy,’ although that was a hard concept to absorb,” Bernardo said.

She said many Filipinos assume that separatists characterize the peace and order crisis in Mindanao, when it is criminality and clan wars that define violence there.

Many of the graduates were women, Bernardo said, which comprise the highest volume of illiterates in Mindanao.

Many of these women are mothers who may impart lessons about peace and human rights to their children, she said.

The foundation’s graduates have also formed bonds, enabling the government to organize them into economic cooperatives or organizations, she said.

Bernardo said a survey of their former pupils has established that many pursued reading or counting lessons so they could vote properly, handle their financial transactions and avoid being duped, and to be able to send text messages instead of make expensive calls using their mobile telephones.

She said some ARMM beneficiaries of the government’s conditional cash transfer program complained of being shortchanged because they could not operate an automated teller machine (ATM).
#10937
“But it is a chicken and egg situation,” Bernardo said.

“How can you have inclusive growth in the most conflict-plagued area of the Philippines if one third of your adult [population is] illiterate and cannot avail of the dividends of peace [such as] opportunities for employment [and] opportunities for increased income that will become available when the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law brings a surge of investors in the region?” she said.

Bernardo said government educators and nongovernment organizations could improve the literacy rate in ARMM provinces in three years.

Bernardo’s mother, former Senator Rasul, a teacher, had pioneered phono-syllabic teaching in the Philippines in the 1960s. This is an adult literacy teaching method which helps students recognize the alphabet by introducing the sound each letter makes when these are formed into words.

Bernardo said 63,751 adults in ARMM have graduated from literacy classes given by Magbassa Kita (which is Tausug for “Let us read”).

The foundation had also used the phono-syllabic process to introduce concepts like peace and autonomy to communities, she said.

Bernardo said literacy champions have included education in priorities being drawn up for a Bangsamoro master plan. She said the Bangsamoro development plan has targeted 600,000 adults in ARMM for literacy training.

Bernardo said Mindanao educators are hopeful they would be able to teach functional literacy to these adults before the transition process begins.

“The business sector tells us peace is key to economic growth. But key to peace is business investments and development, which is why ARMM’s productivity is low and its poverty [incidence] is high. There is no peace, few investments, few businesses. It is a vicious cycle,” she said.

BAGUIO CITYâ€"The process of building a Bangsamoro region has started in Congress, but literacy advocates on Friday said one of the government’s crucial problems in the transition from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to a new region is an illiterate work force.

Investments are expected to flood Mindanao when peace is achieved, but entrepreneurs may end up getting workers from other provinces or regions because many adults in the ARMM still cannot read, write or count, said Amina Rasul Bernardo, managing trustee of Magbassa Kita Foundation Inc., during this year’s national literacy conference at Teachers’ Camp.

Sama ining tipik sa mga lagda sa pagpatuman sa   Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees nga nag-ingon:

Impunity here has recast killers into politicians. Despite the veneer of a restored democracy, an ingrained institutional habit of human rights abuse hobbles the country still.

The 24-year-old man who has not been named, was given his sentence after the court in Medina, Saudi Arabia, found him guilty of “promoting the vice and practice of homosexuality.”

According to a report in the daily Arabic newspaper Al-Watan, the man was arrested following an entrapment ploy by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV).

Posing as a potential suitor online, members of the CPVPV arranged to meet the now convicted man for a date.

When the man arrived at the designated meeting place, he was greeted by an undercover agent and a number of other officers from the CPVPV.

He was then arrested and his phone was confiscated.

According to authorities, a search of the phone revealed “indecent images” and other incriminating evidence that apparently proved his “homosexuality”.

During the court case, the 24-year-old man is said to have confessed to using his Twitter account to meet other men, and for possessing “pornographic images of homosexual perversion.”

The 450 lashes will be administered over 15 separate sessions.

It is not the first time that something like this has been reported in Saudi Arabia; in 2012 The Pink News reported a similar incident when a man was arrested for using Facebook as a means to arrange meetings with other gay men.

In Saudi Arabia, like most of the Middle East, homosexuality is a taboo and can result in harsh punishments if someone is found guilty.

By law, any married man found engaging in sodomy or any non-Muslim who commits sodomy with a Muslim can be stoned to death.

Other punishments to be handed out to those found guilty of homosexuality include chemical castrations, imprisonment and execution.

The news of the latest conviction has seen an outcry of disapproval from gay right campaign groups in the Middle East.

The United Arab Emirates groups chair, named only as Abdulla, told LGBTQ nation that the severity of the punishment was “infuriating” and “disheartening”.

He said: “Not only this is the fundamental human right for privacy is breached but the entrapment and sentence also breaches several human rights charters.”

Adding: “If the man survives this ordeal he will find himself an outcast and will be in danger for life after he completes this harsh sentence.”

Headhunting has historically occurred in nearly every part of the world. But few cultures ascribe such value to heads as the Dahomey people, who lived in modern-day Benin. Kings, such as Gezo (who ruled from 1818 to 1858), maintained vast collections of enemy heads as a display of their royal power.

When Scottish explorer John Duncan visited the Dahomey, he reported that Gezo had a collection of 2,000â€"3,000 heads. Those of importance were decorated with brass and iron rivets, wrapped in fabric and kept in pans. Duncan claimed that the owner and history of each head was carefully maintained. The skulls were also used in architecture. Gezo’s throne, which is currently being kept on display in a museum, was mounted on the skulls of enemy kings.

The King of Dahomey was not limited to merely taking the heads of rivals. He was allowed to decapitate anyone he wished, including his own subjects. This was important for ceremonies and festivals including the huetanu (“yearly head business”). -- http://listverse.com/2014/

Enzo's widow, 'mastermind' together in Visayas?
(philstar.com) | Updated September 18, 2014 - 5:40pm

MANILA, Philippines â€" The widow of slain international race car driver Enzo Pastor and her alleged lover are hiding together in the Visayas, the Pastor family said Thursday.

Pastor's parents told reporters that Dalia Guerrero Pastor and businessman Domingo "Sandy" de Guzman, the alleged mastermind in the killing of the race car driver, reunited after the latter was released on bail for charges of illegal gun possession.

Police Officer 2 Edgar Angel, the suspected gunman in the slay, claimed in an extrajudicial confession before the Philippine National Police last month that Dalia and De Guzman have an illicit affair and that the businessman paid him P100,000 to kill the champion racer.

Angel said he agreed to hit Pastor after De Guzman showed him photos of Dalia's injuries supposedly from domestic violence.

Dalia, also a suspect in the slay, denied in her counter-affidavit that she has a "love relationship" with De Guzman.

Angel was indicted by the Department of Justice on September 12 for the murder of Pastor.

Pastor's family, meanwhile, welcomed the development in the case. - reports from Edu Punay

'Regime of sleep'

Mathias Mpuuga, who shortly after Museveni's re-election in 2011 led protests against the government over the rising cost of living, is having a good laugh about the situation.

"President Museveni has never been delusional about it; he warned Ugandans early enough that his will be a regime of sleep and he has not disappointed," Mpuuga says.

In the earlier years when Museveni first competed for the presidency, after his government restored elections following the bush war, he bragged about pacifying the country and allowing Ugandans to sleep without worrying about violence.

When he took over power in 1986, the country had had six different administrations in a space of just six years since the overthrow of Idi Amin in 1979. He therefore turned the narrative about "restoring sleep" into a key campaign catchphrase.

Of the state-of-the-nation address and budget speech, Mpuuga said, "Museveni is supplying the sleep he promised Ugandans."

Government critics such as Betty Nambooze, an opposition legislator, say old age is taking its toll on the politicians.

"They are too old and their attention spans have been reduced," Nambooze, 45, told Al Jazeera.

Deputy prime minister Ali is one of the most senior members of cabinet, second only to Henry Kajura, 80, another deputy prime minister and minister of public service. Museveni, in power since 1986, will hit 70 this September.

However, the president has infused some youth into his cabinet. Presidency Minister Frank Tumwebaze, one of the most influential members of the cabinet, is 38.

In a further dig at the government, Nambooze said: "The president never has anything new to say and his colleagues know in advance that this is the case [so they doze off]."

She claims that what the politicians exhibit in public is not different from what they do in the comfort of their offices, negatively affecting the productivity of ministries.

"If the honourable ministers cannot attentively listen to their boss speaking in parliament, do you expect them to pay attention to briefs from technocrats in their ministries?" asked Nambooze.

Rose Namayanja, the government spokesperson, however, claims that Nambooze's statements are made "out of ignorance of how [the] government works".

"Those senior members of cabinet she is trying to disparage make tremendous contributions to the workings of government," said Namayanja.

She added that it is "natural that people will close their eyes to process" what is being said.

"Managing [the] government is a mental process and it must necessarily involve thinking," she adds.

The media's prying eyes into the matter is creating problems for journalists.

Last month, NTV, a local broadcaster, beamed images that appeared to show the president himself dozing while listening to the budget speech, prompting a government spokesman to say he was "meditating".

The station's reporters who had been accredited to cover the president's press conference days later were turned away, sparking speculation as to whether the station was banned from covering events presided over by Museveni.

The NTV crew on June 30 was again unable to cover the president as he presided over an event at parliament.

Hellen Kaweesa, the parliament's spokeswoman, however, says that the reporters from the station missed the event because they arrived late.

"The reporters came to my office and I gave them footage. We have not banned anybody from covering [presidential events at parliament]," Kaweesa told Al Jazeera.

Officials at NTV station declined to comment on the incidents for this article.

Kaweesa came under fire from Museveni's spokesperson, who accused her of failing to "regulate" the media during parliamentary events.

Tamale Mirundi, the president's spokesperson, said that the TV station was not banned from covering presidential events but that "it should stand warned".

"The president is the fountain of honour and he must be respected; under no circumstances can the president of the republic be depicted in such a manner," Mirundi said.

Snoring away

Whether MPs and ministers simply sleep through these events has become a key focus for the media. Some commentators have said that if government officials can doze while attending important events they know are being covered live, they can do anything in the privacy of their offices.

"Sleeping is not a bad thing. Sleeping on the job is," Bernard Tabaire, a columnist for the Sunday Monitor, wrote.

"No one has yet done the count that I am aware of, but the number of our big men and women who snored away as the president delivered his annual state-of-the-nation speech ... was possibly the largest in five years."

It all started four years ago when a local tabloid splashed the pictures of sleeping ministers and MPs on its front page as President Yoweri Museveni delivered his address to the country.

The paper's headline on the day was "Sleeping Nation".

The public has since come to covet these events as much as the politicians seem to dread them. TV cameras are always out for who is napping, and photographs of ministers and MPs sleeping though these important speeches - delivered annually in June - end up on social media, with many lampooning the politicians.

"When I served in Museveni's government things were exciting and one would have no reason to sleep," said Professor  Edward Kakonge, who served as the first minister of local government when Museveni became president in 1986.

"What is happening now is a clear pointer that there is nothing exciting in there any more."

Kampala, Uganda - At the most recent state-of-the-nation address, Uganda's second deputy prime minister wore sunglasses too dark to enable anyone to see whether his eyes were open or closed.

Moses Ali, 74, is one of the cabinet ministers who seem to have improvised a way to escape the scrutiny of nosy media cameras that have on several occasions caught senior government officials and MPs dozing when the president is delivering his address and when the national budget is read.

Facts and Trivia / The Thunderbolt Of Flaming Wisdom
September 18, 2014, 12:52:42 PM
We tend to think of Buddhist monks living a very spartan lifestyle, shunning earthly indulgences. But 500 years ago, a Tibetan monk named Drupkka Kunley enjoyed the kind of sex life that would make Hugh Hefner seem like a virgin. Although he accomplished much during his lifetime, including introducing Buddhism to Bhutan and building the Chimi Lhakhang monastery, Kunley was best known for his campaign of romance.

Kunley preached enlightenment through sex, earning the title “The Saint of 5,000 Women.” The monk, perpetually drenched in alcohol, claimed to be able to change demonesses into good deities by striking them with his penis, which became known as “The Thunderbolt of Flaming Wisdom,” clearly the coolest nickname for a dude’s manhood ever. -- http://listverse.com/
