USA and Canada / Ship Underneath 911 Site
July 16, 2010, 11:41:25 AM
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10649949

Workers at the World Trade Center site are excavating a 32ft-long ship (9.8m) hull believed to have been buried in the 18th Century.

Archaeologists believe the ship was used as filler material to extend lower Manhattan into the Hudson River.

Archaeologist Molly McDonald hopes the ship, discovered on Tuesday, would be retrieved by the end of the day.

It is unclear if any large portions of the hull would remain intact, but Ms McDonald hopes to salvage some timbers. - bbc news

"We're mostly clearing it by hand because it's kind of fragile," said Ms McDonald.

In Duterte's career as the longest-serving city mayor of Davao, he has kept the city in peace and with no tolerance for drugs.

"Ningbalik na pod ang pagkusog sa drugs and its not limited to that area nga naay nadakpan ang CIDG (There is a resurgence of drugs in the city and it's not limited to that area where the CIDG staged a raid)," Duterte said.

Now as the vice mayor, he said the responsibility he held before now lies in the hands of her daughter.

USA and Canada / End of Oil Leak
July 16, 2010, 11:36:01 AM
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10654584

BP says it has temporarily stopped oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from its leaking well.

It is the first time the flow has stopped since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig on 20 April.

The well has been sealed with a cap as part of a test of its integrity that could last up to 48 hours.

US President Barack Obama said the development was a "positive sign" but noted that BP was still in the testing phase.

BP executive Kent Wells said the oil had been stopped at 1425 local time (1925 GMT) and he was "excited" by the progress.

"It is very good to see no oil go into the Gulf of Mexico," said Mr Wells.

BP shares rose in New York trading on Thursday after the flow was stopped, having already performed well over the day.

US bank Goldman Sachs has agreed to pay $550m (£356m) to settle civil fraud charges of misleading investors.

The US financial watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), said this was the biggest fine against a bank in its history.

It added that $250m would compensate investors, with the balance going to the US Treasury.

The charges concerned Goldman's marketing of mortgage investments as the US housing market faltered.

The SEC said Goldman had acknowledged that marketing material contained "incomplete information". - bbc

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has said he will commit the majority of his estimated $13.5bn (£8.8bn) fortune to philanthropy after his death.

Mr Allen follows fellow co-founder Bill Gates in pledging billions of dollars to projects designed to help others.

He set up a charitable foundation 20 years ago that has given $400m. He has personally donated a further $600m.

Mr Allen founded technology giant Microsoft with Mr Gates in 1975 but left the company in 1983.

"I want to announce that my philanthropic efforts will continue after my lifetime," said Mr Allen, the 37th richest man in the world according to Forbes magazine.

"I've planned for many years now that the majority of my estate will be left to philanthropy to continue the work of the foundation and fund non-profit scientific research." - BBC

July 16, 2010, 11:27:08 AM

Ryanair ran adverts depicting Sir Stelios as Pinocchio and suggesting he was lying about Easyjet's punctuality.

But Mr O'Leary apologised, saying Sir Stelios was not personally responsible for Easyjet not publishing weekly details of their on-time performance.

Sir Stelios will donate the settlement to his philanthropic foundation.

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte vowed Thursday to cut the city's peace and order fund even as she agreed with law enforcement agencies' move to intensify efforts against terrorism.

Duterte said this year's budget for peace and order is pegged at P900 million.

"I will not elaborate how much will be taken out from the allotted budget but we are discussing of trimming down the peace and order budget to utilized it by other departments in the City Government to fund their programs," she said in vernacular after signing the memorandum of agreement (MOA) to continue the implementation of the Davao City Oplan Laban sa Terorismo (DColt) this year.

She added: "Basically we already improved our equipment. We have the vehicles, motorcycles, all these things are met. We have the K9, OED, so basically maganda na ang mechanism natin," she added. - Jade Zaldivar, Sun Star

DESPITE the commitment of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to increase the coin allocation for Cebu, increasing public awareness on coin re-circulation is still the concern the Cebu Bankers Club (CBC) aims to strengthen this year.

Newly-elected CBC president Claro Cabaero said that to further raise awareness on coin re-circulation, the club will come up with “catchy” slogans to remind the public to make use of their coins in whatever transaction.

Cabaero told Sun.Star Cebu Wednesday that the proposal has been approved by the regional office of the BSP and will be a joint project with the CBC. He said the CBC will tap the print and broadcast media on this.

The 14-year-old girl, who accused an American national of rape last year, has recanted, clearing Perry McNeely of any wrongdoing.

The complainant also turned the tables on the arresting officers and an international women’s group after she accused police of pushing her into the hotel room and the International Justice Mission (IJM) of forcing her to sign the complaint-affidavit.

“It is not true that (Perry) McNeely raped me on Dec. 1 and 2, 2009 at the Metro Park Hotel in (Barangay) Lahug, City of Cebu,” the girl said in her two-page affidavit of desistance.

The complainant has asked Regional Trial Court Branch 6 Judge Ester Veloso to dismiss the case against McNeely. Judge Veloso will decide on the motion to dismiss the case today.

EXPECT a war in Bohol this Saturday as AJ Banal takes on Big Yoo at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer is anticipating an action-packed main event in the boxing event dubbed as “Sandugo: Labanan ng mga Kampeon” as both fighters have the ability to score a knockout.

“Yoo’s style is, he comes in to fight. He’s a pressure fighter and has a body punch. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain which is dangerous,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Banal has a 21-1-1 record with 17 knockouts and a 73 percent knockout rate, while Yoo, a South Korea-based Japanese, is 16-2 with 11 stoppages and a 61 percent knockout clip.

Both fighters are off from knockout victories; Banal stopped Mexican Cecilio Santos in the fourth last January, while the 25-year-old Yoo had a fifth round technical knockout over Filipino BJ Dolorosa.

Help is here for people who are overcome with nerves when faced with the age-old custom of shaking hands -- British scientists Thursday unveiled a step-by-step guide to the perfect handshake.

Researchers at the University of Manchester, in northwest England, found that the biggest problems were sweaty palms, limp wrists, gripping too hard and lack of eye contact.

Geoffrey Beattie, the university's head of psychological sciences, came up with a mathematical formula which took into account 12 key measures needed to convey trust and respect to the recipient.

They include vigour, eye contact and hand temperature.

"The human handshake is one of the most crucial elements of impression formation and is used as a source of information for making a judgment about another person," he said.

The researcher added he was surprised "that up until now there has not been a guide showing people how they should shake hands," which has been a traditional greeting and a key part of business deals for thousands of years.

Beattie's steps to the perfect handshake, for both men and women, are: use the right hand; a complete grip and a firm squeeze (but not too strong); a cool and dry palm; approximately three shakes, with a medium level of vigour, held for no longer than two to three seconds.

The handshake must also be executed with eye contact kept throughout and a good natural smile with an appropriate verbal statement, according to the scientist. - agence france presse

Oil firm BP is preparing to test the strength of a cap it has placed on the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico, in its latest bid to stop the flow.

The firm began closing valves late on Wednesday, but a leak was detected and full testing will not begin until it has been fixed.

The government had earlier delayed the whole procedure amid fears that a failure could make the situation worse.

But after experts reviewed BP's plans, officials approved the operation.

"There is a tremendous sense of urgency," said Adm Thad Allen, the US incident commander. But he warned that nobody wanted to make "an irreversible mistake".

BP hopes the series of valves will be capable of holding back all of the oil from the well.- BBC

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Scientists in Britain think it was probably the chicken, after using new computer technology to try and crack the age-old riddle.

Researchers at the Universities of Sheffield and Warwick, in northern and central England, say the secret lies in the eggshell -- specifically the vital role played by a chicken protein in forming it.

Scientists already knew that the protein, vocledidin-17 (OC-17), plays a part in eggshell formation, but the new technology allowed the team to demonstrate exactly how the protein makes it happen.

In a computer simulation, the OC-17 protein acted as a catalyst to kickstart the formation of crystals that make up an eggshell by clamping itself on to calcium carbonate particles.

The OC-17 protein then dropped off when the crystal nucleus was large enough to grow on its own, freeing up the protein to start the process again.

Eggshells are created when this happens many times over within a short period of time.

"Understanding how chickens make eggshells is fascinating in itself but can also give clues towards designing new materials and processes," said Professor John Harding from Sheffield University, one of the authors of the research.

"Nature has found innovative solutions that work for all kinds of problems in materials science and technologyâ€"we can learn a lot from them," he added. - Agence France Presse

BROADCASTER Ted Failon has filed arbitrary detention, perjury and grave coercion charges against Metro Manila police chief Roberto Rosales and several other policemen with the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly trying to frame him for his wife’s death in April 2009.

Failon (Mario Teodoro Failon Etong in real life) also filed a civil suit against the policemen with the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (QCRTC) in which he asked for P10 million in damages for malicious prosecution.

In a 24-page complaint submitted to the Ombudsman, Failon, his sister-in-law Pamela Arteche-Trinchera and his house helpâ€"Pacifico Arteche Apacible, Carlota Morbos, Wilfreda Bollicer and Glen Polanâ€"said that Rosales and his men tried to pin on the broadcaster the death of his wife Trina who, investigators later said, committed suicide.

At the same time, they accused Rosales, former Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Chief Supt. Elmo San Diego and their men of arbitrary detention, perjury, grave coercion and violating the rights of arrested individuals.

A businessman was killed by a falling tree in a freak accident in Barangay Villamonte, Bacolod City.

Chief Insp. Danilo Francisco identified the victim as Pablo Sapio, 52, who was engaged in the landscaping business.

He was killed when a 50-foot eucalyptus tree in his backyard that was being cut fell on his left leg, causing him to fall to the ground.

Sapio was rushed to the Bacolod Doctor’s Hospital but he died while being treated due to a rupture in his spinal column that resulted when he fell to the ground, Francisco said.

He added that it took several minutes before Sapio was rescued because his leg was trapped under the huge tree trunk.

Randy Lama, who was hired by Sapio along with an unidentified companion to cut the tree, surrendered to police several hours after the accident.

The Spanish Football Federation says a scan has confirmed that Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has suffered a "grade one injury" to his groin.

A grade one tear is considered to be the least serious but the Reds medical team now plan to make their own assessment before issuing an update.

Torres, 26, suffered the injury in Spain's World Cup final win on Sunday.

"It certainly looked like it might have been bad but it seems not too bad," said Liverpool doctor Peter Brukner.

"He walked up to get his medal without too many problems so we're optimistic."

Liverpool have given players who took part in the World Cup three weeks off from the time their country's participation in the competition ended and that means Torres is not due to return to Anfield until the start of August. - BBC

Golf / Criticism Against Tiger Woods
July 14, 2010, 09:32:15 PM
Tiger Woods has been criticised by his caddie, who labelled his putting "sub-standard" as the world number one prepares to mount his Open challenge.

"We know the parts of the game he needs to work on," caddie Steve Williams told the PGA Tour website.

Williams added: "The one part of Tiger's game this year that has been very sub-standard is his putting."

Woods announced on Tuesday that he has changed his putter for The Open, which starts at St Andrews on Thursday.

He decided to ditch the model that helped him win 13 of his 14 majors in favour of one he has been using in practice on the Old Course.

Woods, twice an Open winner at St Andrews, admitted: "I've always struggled on slower greens and the one I've gone to this week comes off faster and I've had to make very little adjustment. - BBC

With an 11-medal haul, the 16-member Philippine math team tied on Monday night powerhouse China in the annual contest, topped by Taiwan, which had produced two perfect scores.

Thirteen-year-old Adrian Reginald Sy, Grade 6 student of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, was the country's lone gold medal winner.

Sy, who has been representing the Philippines in international math contests during the past two years, was one of only seven perfect scorers in this year's PMWC.

The Filipino numbers aces also bagged two silver and eight bronze medals in the tough competition.

The silver medals came courtesy of Farrell Eldrian Wu from the MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig and John Thomas Chuatak from St. Stephen's High School in Manila.

The bronze medalists were Andrew Lawrence Sy from St. Jude Catholic School, Ethan Riley Chan from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Ezekiel Christian Ong from UNO High School, Rafael Jose Santiago from PAREF-Southridge School, Jonn Angel Aranas from Makati Science High School, Francis Concepcion from Philippine Cultural College, Benedict Ryan Tiu from St. Stephen's High School, and Clyde Lawrence Sy from Chiang Kai Shek College.

Adrian Sy dedicated his victory to his parents Reynaldo and Lily Sy, his teachers at SJCS and his trainers from Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Phils. (MTG).

APPARENTLY weary of being a punching bag, a policewoman took matters into her own hands and shot her policeman-husband on Sunday night inside their house in Taguig City.

Senior Police Officer 1 Rolando Makabitas, 41, who was assigned to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Camp Crame, Quezon City, died as he was being brought to the hospital, according to Taguig police chief, Senior Supt. Camilo Cascolan.

His wife, PO3 Elizabeth Makabitas, 41, immediately surrendered to authorities after the shooting.

Detailed with the Philippine National Police Health Service, she remains in the custody of the Taguig police who are preparing to charge her with parricide.

Cascolan said the shooting took place on Sunday night at the couple’s home within the Bases Conversion Development Authority compound in Taguig City.

“[Based on] the wife‘s statement, she said her husband had a habit of pistol-whipping and abusing her whenever he came home,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer on the phone.
