hmmmm...just a thought, I think it would be better to stay single until you find the other half of your soul . Some people may not have an other half or are not destined to have one or just don't know what to do when the do find one.

BED AND BREAKFAST

hmmmm....I think there are more than enough entrepreneurial population in Guindulman to pull this off. I also know there's a healthy number of balikbayans from there from my last fiesta there. I just hope they won't make the Bed and Breakfast a government thing, maybe a private organization with concessions from the town but not wholly...I think its safe to say that in the Philippines and in the US, almost anything run by the government usually has a lot of BS.

If it were to be built, maybe in the style of the old Spanish houses with the asbestos or brick roof look. Not sure how safe real asbestos is. They can make it entirely look like an antique house but with all the modern amenities cleverly hidden but accessible. I know this can be done as I had visited a bed and breakfast just like this when I last visited Vigan on a class tour.

The trees may not mature asap but maybe there's a location that they can acquire where its already got the trees and they can employ the right methods of building where they don't harm the surrounding vegetation.

Yups, this should be a very doable and feasible project for those wanting peace and quiet. It can operate on the same principle as Escaya...you don't really pay for the accommodation nor the beach, but rather, the privacy that such prices can ensure.

With the advent of the net, facebook, flickr and all of the picture sites, its easy advertising since per experience, when my friends see where I've been that's really beautiful, they automatically ask where it is and would want to go there. Its effortless....

So, who's going to present all these ideas to the Mayor ?

Basdio * is quite doing well since Bituon Beach resort was established. This commonly caters to German speaking guests since the booking is in Germany. There are also  established diving resorts along this area.
Please visit www.bituon.com. The website sad to say is in German.

*Basdio is the nearest barrio  of Guindulman to Anda. The beaches along this area is comparable to Panglao and the advantage is that, it is still peaceful and very clean

Would it make good snorkling and diving too ? this would be an ideal vacation for those loving the sea but wanting to avoid the craziness in Panglao.

I think like most things, its a lifestyle choice. I got married at 20 and 7 years later, still happy to see my husband...wanted to murder him a few times but happy nonetheless. ;D ;D

My closest friend does not have a restful bone in her body. Falls in and out of love at the drop of a hat. hmmm...maybe marriage will suit her , maybe not.

Then I have a good high school friend who got married 4 years ago, have 2 kids and a husband who cheats on her with gay dudes and chicks alike and her standard of living has gone down. She lets on that she's miserable and sometimes, I wished she didn't marry the guy just because she got pregnant. Maybe she would've been happier as a single mom.

Jellybean, change will take a long time. It cannot happen overnight. The worst thing that probably derailed the Philippines' progress was not continuing to be a US commonwealth for a bit longer. Who knows, it could've made things worse or better, but from my perspective, a lot of great and respectable schools like UP and PMA were established when the PI was still a commonwealth.

Sometimes, I think Philippines is like a teenager given the keys to an expensive car that he doesn't know how to drive much less take care of. Our country may not be that ready for democracy, rather, maybe a nanny state. The colonial mentality is still hold strong and you can see it with your very eyes. The "mestizos" be it Chinese or otherwise get elected into office, sometimes just because of their looks. Look at our senate, its chock full of washed up actors.

Its the culture and its the way things are done. All you can do is tune it out, do what you can for the good that you're intending to do and enjoy what life has to offer. Or...you can organize an awareness campaign but if the basic needs of the people are not met, they will never climb up Maslow's ladder. They will never think beyond what will put food on the table or load on their cellphones.  :D

Even if Guindulman were to just start small with the lush foliage, I think there's enough balikbayan population that a bed and breakfast could work in the middle of newly restored  and replanted trees and flowers. Maybe like the one in Dauis by the church, but also offering lodging, not just food.

Most of the Filipino friends I have want to visit Bohol with me at some point, but if I was from Guindulman, maybe a place like the bed and breakfast I've described above may be the ideal place to take them instead of my parent's home. Big enough, with perks like a hotel but with the feel of home.

They get a taste of what the town is really about. Food from the kitchen that truly reflects Guindulmanun taste. A sprawling garden under the shade of the huge trees and a fragrant garden full of native plants and flowers.

Imagine the pictures that would be posted online from these visits and the snowball effect of " I wanna visit too" even this can generate.  ;)

Thanks wolf, I believe the best project for a historical town like Guindulman is preservation of historical sites, artifacts and buildings including century old trees. The idea of commercial/industrial progress is out of place.

Before its too late, someone must pass a zoning law for the entire province of Bohol. This will prevent conflict between industrial development and eco-cultural industry.

The best thing for Guindulman is to build a museum to entice tourists and balikbayans. Make the place pleasant, perhaps by making another man-made forest and resurrecting Guindulman's ancient reputation of having lush foliage.

When I was 17, I had the opportunity to visit Vigan. I wish I can dig up my pictures of it right now but I can't think where they are off the top of my head. Everybody probably heard of "heritage Village" in Vigan ? It is a huge tourist attraction,  a whole street that looked frozen in time. Old houses from the Spanish Era and its not deserted mind you, it is actually occupied by shops after shops. http://www.philsite.net/vigan.htm

From my recent trip to San Antonio, I learned of this place called Enchanted Springs Ranch where they are "keeping the old west alive"  http://www.enchantedspringsranch.com/. Of course, there's the preserved Alamo in the heart of San Antonio http://www.thealamo.org/

These places draw so many tourists, and even school field trips as they serve an educational value. You can buy souvenirs of all shapes and sizes, from pillows to blankets to mugs, shot glasses, caps, shirts and post cards. Of course, tourists eat....in Vigan, there was the ever famous Vigan Empanada you can buy from the street vendors and for the more discerning, a slew of restos. In both Enchanted Springs and Alamo, there's rows after rows of small restos and delis to chose from for food and well, souvenirs.

What does this mean for Guindulman ? Well  ....

1. Tourists bring money into the town thus translating into more small businesses opening, cottage industry , and even more jobs. read : less unemployment

2. With money coming in, bigger budget for town wide improvement..hopefully for schools, police and public works

3. Shall I say pride for the people who are originally from there ?

4. The tourism could start small and can snowball if managed correctly....there must be some skill that Guindulmanuns are very good at. Maybe embroidered pillowcases ? or basketweaving ? Pottery ? Anything that could be equated like Jagna and Calamay or Muron and Tubigon, or even Ubay and Carabao Milk. Maybe someday, it will be Guindulaman and.....

Not surprisingly, some of the concerns are getting rid of the pesky pee smell and making it tasty.
The drink will be mainly cow tinkle with a few herbs to, er, mask the taste of its primary ingredient.

Either risk psychosis or treat parkinson's...that must be a fine line.

This really explains why some people somehow find the need to "fear" or be "mad" at something or someone. I knew this one girl here in Houston who stumbled into our circle of friends and whom we "kicked out" after some time. She always had a Phobia of someone or something. Her neighbors, one of our other friend's 13 yo son, the dog...etc. In her mind, she sees more than what is really there and she's always the poor victim in a bizarre overboard kind of way. Even jokes that she overhears about something totally unrelated, she spins it that people are making fun of her. Christ ! that was an ordeal. We just eventually stopped taking her calls or inviting her to anything. Nobody needed the drama nor the aggravation.

Background on her : broken family, abandoned by her parents, was pretty open about wanting to leave her son in the Philippines, "used" to do drugs, some gang, married an old US soldier almost 2 times her age with a son that couldv'e been her bf. Good riddance!

hmmmm...kadaghan ba anang party list oi. Wala gyud ko naka sabot ana, what is that about man diay ?
#141
I think there should be a good balance between both to move forward.

If we are not practical and reign ourselves in, we never get things done that would propel us forward.

If, on the other hand,  we are too obsessed with just dealing with the here and now and not ever entertain dreams, then we wouldn't have the drive nor persistence to achieve anything greater than what we've already got.

Thomas Edison failed more than a thousand times but persisted because he had a dream, and voila...we have the light bulb. To be more current, the inventor of Dyson vacuum cleaners was in Reader's Digest (or Playboy) recently and I read that it took him 10 years, financial struggle, etc  before achieving success.

A lot of people break under these circumstances and so they just stop dreaming. Some dont. But we need everyone to work as a society. We all have our niche's. Yours will always be different from mine... just part of the beauty of humanity !  8)

The Science Behind It

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090911133656.htm

'Death Stench' Is A Universal Ancient Warning Signal, Biologists Discover

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2009) â€" The smell of recent death or injury that repels living relatives of insects has been identified as a truly ancient signal that functions to avoid disease or predators, biologists have discovered.

David Rollo, professor of biology at McMaster University, found that corpses of animals, from insects to crustaceans, all emit the same death stench produced by a blend of specific fatty acids.

The findings have been published in the journal Evolutionary Biology.

Rollo and his team made the discovery while they were studying the social behavior of cockroaches. When a cockroach finds a good place to live it marks the site with pheromone odours that attract others. In trying to identify the precise chemicals involved, Rollo extracted body juices from dead cockroaches.

"It was amazing to find that the cockroaches avoided places treated with these extracts like the plague," says Rollo. "Naturally, we wanted to identify what chemical was making them all go away."

The team eventually identified the specific chemicals that signaled death. Furthermore, they found that the same fatty acids not only signaled death in ants, caterpillars, and cockroaches, they were equally effective in terrestrial woodlice and pill bugs that are actually not insects but crustaceans related to crayfish and lobsters.

Because insects and crustaceans diverged more than 400-million years ago it is likely that most subsequent species recognize their dead in a similar way, that the origin of such signals was likely even older, and that such behaviour initially occurred in aquatic environments (few crustaceans are terrestrial).

"Recognizing and avoiding the dead could reduce the chances of catching the disease, or allow you to get away with just enough exposure to activate your immunity," says Rollo. Likewise, he adds, release of fatty acids from dismembered body parts could provide a strong warning that a nasty predator was nearby.

"As explained in our study, fatty acidsâ€"oleic or linoleic acidsâ€"are reliably and quickly released from the cells following death. Evolution appears to have favoured such clues because they were reliably associated with demise, and avoiding contagion and predation are rather critical to survival."

The generality and strength of the phenomenon, coupled with the fact that the fatty acids are essential nutrients rather than pesticides, holds real promise for applications such as plant and stored product protection or exclusion of household pests.

The study was made possible through funding by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

From :

http://www.ehow.com/how_2001782_create-affective-spider-repellent.html

They are creapy, crawly and give most of us the chills! We find them in those Unexpected and undesired places in our homes. Around the cars. In the Attic. On the Boat even!
So how do we help them decide that where we are, is NOT where they want them to be?

Things You'll Need:

    * plastic spray bottle - garden type
    * large canning Jar (glass or plastic with lid)
    * old blender
    * spiders (fresh and dead)
    * Water
    * Pantyhose
    * Funnel

   1.      Step 1

Capture spiders or kill and place in a jar. Get as many as possible from your immediate area as those are the ones you want to repel. 15+ is a good number.

   2.      Step 2

Add warm water to the jar so that you have at least 3 cups of water covering.
      Cover and swish lightly.

   3.      Step 3

      Now the tough part.
Pour spiders and liquid into the blender.
Puree on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute

   4.      Step 4

Place panty hose (or long cut off toe section) ovee the top of the blender after removing the lid.

   5.      Step 5

Place funnel into mouth of spray bottle and slowly pour the blender contents in. This will leave remains in the stocking and allow all liquid to pass to the spray bottle.

   6.      Step 6

Discard stocking and place sprayer onto the spray bottle.

From what I have read on their website, it's complete nonsense with absolutely no real science, or convincing data to support their claims. Mostly, it's all testimonials, and product slogans laced with pseudo-science mumbo jumbo.

In any case, to observe quantum effects at the macroscopic scale that you and I are accustomed to, it requires "COHERENCE", which means that all particles or atoms to be in the same quantum state. This is very difficult to achieve, and can only happen in very special circumstances. That's why we NEVER see this. Yet the products are all called quantum something, which seems to imply that their product leverages quantum effects of some kinds, which there is NO data or information provided to support it.

In addition, there is no such thing as Scalar Energy, and the terminology is meaningless in physics. I would stay clear away from this company and their products.

BTW - just because you can Google something and there are webpages that describes it. That does not mean that this something is real and TRUE. Anyone can put up realistic looking webpages filled with nonsense and garbage. This is the essence of online scams.

Also, I did look up descriptions of "scalar electromagnetism" aka scalar energy. This concept is in the same category as "zero-point" energy. These are catch phrases used by scam artists to fool people who do not have a science background to sell products that supposedly that can provide either FREE energy, or good health.

This is no different from scam artists of the 19 century who sold "Perpetual Motion Machines" or magical elixir that can cure all maladies.

not mean that the future is dependent on the past gikan ni kang Ondoy Bran

This is true but you could boldly face the future being equipped with the lessons from the past.

That's true.

You can also interpret this in a different way.

Kung ikaw gastadur unya mag wonder ka nganong short ka at the end of the month...you only have to look back nganong na short ka. :-)

Sad state of affairs but we do lack discipline in our little patch of paradise.

But, what we can't change overnight , we can do something pre-emptive about....ergo....the humps. The bigger the better for more populated places.

Common sense baya unta nga kung daghan ug tawo, dili unta magpakusog kay basin ma-unay nimo imong Nanay. Wa ta kabalo, namerkado diay.  Pero bisan asang dapita sa kalibutan, Common Sense is not that common at all ...hahay.... :-\

Implementation is poor so hopefully, mag winais unta ang mga concerned.

Manay thank you for sharing that. I hope others will heed that warning too.  I am off the pill now, but everyday, I have to take metformin to neutralize my blood sugar and 3 organic supplements. I also opted to try acupuncture instead of round after round hormone therapy from the doctor. Sometimes, I feel like the "treatment" is making me worse instead of better. I gained 30 lbs in a month when I first found out I had PCOS.  They said, to control it was to go back to the pill.... I have my doubts.  I would love to have children more than any thing in the world but I wish my husband and I chose a different method early on so now we wouldn't be facing the choice of having in-vitro to get pregnant.

There is no proven scientific connection to what I'm about to say...but if you have daughters, nieces, sisters etc, please do warn them to find alternative means of birth control before taking the pill.

I will be turning 27 shortly and I have used the pill for birth control in the early stages of my marriage. It was only a relatively short time but when we decided to have children, I found out that I had PCOS and that I now cannot complete a cycle without medication.

My cycles were quite regular as a teenager, so was my metabolism. But after I had started messing up my body with hormones, it went haywire. Sure it had some cons, vanity wise, but I would rather have children after being married for 6 years now.

I have a sneaking suspicion the pill had something to do with it but I can't find any literature to say otherwise. I just know I was a regular 31 day cycle girl and now I have to take a cocktail of meds for me to induce a full cycle.

I just read in the news today.

Usahay among imbitaron ug panga-on, tuyo-on namo nga adto mi mag lunch duol sa ila bisan layo sa among office, ang bana mangayo jud ug schedule, per hour pa...luoy jud tawn. Mao lagi, ug walay magporsige ug kuha2, piniriso intawn.

Dili tanan nga nakabana og foreigners all over the world swerte. Daghan gihapon ang giabuso apan nag-antos aron mabag-o ang kinabuhi. Blessed are those that are happily married with good and decent foreigners, and I feel sorry for those that fell into the trap and has no option of getting out.

My 2 centavos :

We are all from Bohol and we should all know or acknowledge by now that anything can be done in the Philippines with the right kind of money and the right kind of connections.

The decision to cut the trees was already determined, they just had to find an excuse to "legalize it" and cover their own As$. Like THAT would even be covered.

At the end of the day, they wanted to high light their new market and that's that. From the pictures, the trees can be rescued. If they really looked at alternatives, I'm sure they would've found a way to save those trees and not cut it down.

If limbs were falling off, it would've made the news...think about it, UP Diliman probably has 100 times more Acacias than Guindulman public market...maybe a bit older too but you never hear of anybody falling victim to falling limbs of Acacia trees.

Lastly...look at these pictures I took last year in Dauis. I beg somebody to tell me that the buildings would look so much better without all these trees !!!!

And it's because circumstances are shifting and unpredictable that training and principles come into play. Sometimes, conscious deliberate choice is not an option. It can happen that one is not given the luxury of agonizing over a decision.

When I read this, I immediately thank God that I am not in a real life episode of 24 and I never have to kill someone for the better good. When you think about it, there are men and women out there fighting for our freedom, not just in the US but for the rest of the world as well and making "Jack Bauer Type" decisions that will probably haunt them for the rest of their lives.

There's a Tagbilaran Sanctuary by Mangga (this is closer)  then there's also one in Panglao ,by  Dominguez beach, right next door to Ananyana and Palm Island

So glad to see these sprouting in Bohol.

If any of you guys are avid snorklers, there is Apo Island Sanctuary off the coast of Malatapay near Dumaguete. Man, that place was awesome !

Hopefully, someday , our Boholano Sanctuaries will be as great as the one in Apo Island ! ;)
