One of the reasons why SM cannot easily venture into mall operations in Bohol particularly in Tagbilaran where a large population is found is that there is hardly an open space with the land requirement that an SM mall would need. If you have gone to other SM malls in many parts of the country, their malls are situated in wide open areas(with the possible exception of the one in Carriedo which is located right at the heart of Sta. Cruz, Manila). I heard the minimum requirement of their malls is something like 10 hectares. This is because they prefer to provide their customers with an open-air parking lot as opposed to basement or rooftop parking. So the next question is, where can you find a 10-hectare lot in rather flat terrain that is along or at least near an existing road in Tagbilaran area? Of course, if and when this location requirement is met, there is still the issue of local businessmen trying to bar the establishment of businesses that compete with their own.

Bohol Latest News / Re: Aumentado to Visit Israel
May 02, 2018, 03:03:26 PM
One of the landmark successes of Israel in the field of agriculture is the irrigation technology called "drip irrigation" that they invented which helped their country turn the desert into productive agricultural lands. This technology has been replicated in many parts of the world especially areas with little rainfall and scarce ground water supply.
#3
nice idea but impractical for rural areas where there is still a lot of unused space.

The bulk of Philippine-grown cacao beans that are exported to various western markets come from Davao Region. There is one big player there that has expanded its operations to the Visayas particularly in Carmen, Bohol, and Pinamungajan in Cebu. This means that in Bohol, there is a growing number of farmers who have gone into wide-scale cacao farming. If this is sustained, it will give not only figurative meaning to "Chocolate Hills" but literal meaning as well.

try coordinating with the officials of your barangay of choice. if you have not yet identified which barangay, try asking for suggestions from the focal person for disaster rehab at the provincial capitol.

pretty strange to see food in an advanced country like the u.s. being served in styrofoam packs. this material has long been banned in davao city by virtue of a local ordinance. so, take out orders from fastfood chains like mcdonalds, KFC, etc. are now served in paper cups and boxes, and packed in 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Help for heartbroken Philippines
November 13, 2013, 01:40:50 PM
tons of help in terms of money, supplies and manpower... given the apparent lack of an overall committee that oversees the receipt and utilization of all monetary donations both from foreign governments and international humanitarian aid organizations, i wonder, if all these will go to the intended recipients.
#17
even in the midst of adversity, some people do know how to give credit where it is due. may their tribe increase!

in today's issue (nov. 3) of philippine daily inquirer, there's a news item about WPF and AusAid giving donations for bohol quake victims. in the jobs section of the same issue, both Plan International and CRS (Catholic Relief Services), both U.S. based international development organizations are hiring staff for their bohol relief project which will be implemented over the next several months... looks like more of the much-needed help is coming.
#19
good to know that WFP is there at least... it should come as no surprise when LGUs and government agencies like DSWD, Red Cross, etc. are in the forefront of relief operations in major disasters because that is part of their mandate, and the people who run these agencies are paid by tax money. of course, the donors of relief goods deserve a big thank you... i was just wondering why other international relief organizations are sorely missing in the action... i went to cateel, davao oriental 8 months after typhoon pablo hit the area and there were about a dozen international organizations still operating in the area. they should have moved to bohol by now because that is where they are needed.
#20
it's kind of surprising that after 2 weeks since the earthquake international relief organizations like UNICEF, plan international, CRS, world vision, etc. are yet to be seen in bohol. they were very quick in coming to the rescue when typhoon pablo hit davao oriental. i wonder what's taking them so long.

isn't this old "news"? it was reported during the incumbency of GMA when bohol newspapers reported that the Bohol airport will start construction soon. fast forward to 3,4 years later and we have yet to see one single piece of heavy equipment that will do earthworks for a runway. perhaps it will take another 3,4 years to actually see the start of a construction? of course, completing the airport project, if and when started, would be a totally different story.

this project EcoFISH will no doubt join the ranks of several other coastal resource management projects implemented in Bohol in the past which all died a natural death after the projects were completed. why? because they don't get it. while they know and acknowledge that people are harvesting fish at a rate that is much faster than what they need to reproduce themselves, they continue to tell people to slow down on fishing and instead plant mangroves, create fish sanctuaries, sh*t like that. but what about mostly poor rural folks whose source of protein is mainly fish? where will they get it? the answer simply lies in the fact that they are already know, that the sea has been overfished. what to do? stop relying on wild fish and start farming fish. This is how the use of poultry, pork, other meats, and even grains evolved that resulted in more supply of food. ancient peoples hunted animals and gathered edible plants in the wild for food. but it's been long while since people realized that they need more food commodities than the number of eaters when they started farming chicken, hogs, cattle, grains including our beloved rice. isn't it high time we do the same for our marine resource needs? there are many coastal communities in the philippines that i know that have begun fish farming as alternative source of fish, and at the same time putting less pressure on our natural marine environment. no amount of USAID-funded projects like CRMP and now, EcoFISH, will ever prosper if they don't start encouraging people to farm fish like we farm rice and vegetables. this concern is as simple as that.
#28
now that's what you call useful information... thanks.

based on the design of the traysikad shown in the photo, it would seem that it was taken in the town of kapalong, davao del norte where these contraptions are called "pukpuk". very distinctive is the bicycle type used and the steering wheel that they have put in place of a handlebar.

if the electricity that supplies your vehicle (bike, car or whatever) is derived from the power that is generated by coal or other fossil fuels such as BFO, then your so-called electric vehicle which is often considered clean and green is in all actuality dirty. to put it bluntly, it is fossil fuel in disguise.

this is old news... back in 1998, a filipino inventor showed on national TV his version of a hydrogen car. a close up shot was shown as water was poured into the car's fuel tank. the TV anchor watched the whole process to attest that water was indeed used to run the engine and even took a ride as a passenger as the car was taken on a short test ride. the right question to ask is: where is this guy now and what happened to his concept of a hydrogen-run engine? if my memory serves me right, this guy and his invention was featured in a lengthy article in FHM a few years back.

Philippine Laws / Re: Mercury-free Philippines
March 11, 2010, 10:03:52 PM
this is a useless exercise. bisag unsaon nilag phase out sa mercury from all equipment in medical facilities and institutions, for as long as we continue to use fossil fuels, mercury will continue to be a permanent part of our lives. this is because mercury, alongside carbon dixiode, is emitted into the atmosphere as fossil fuel is burned. being a heavy metal, mercury will fall back down to earth and settle everywhere: in the soil, in the water. eventually, mercury gets absorbed into the food chain as it gets imbued into the system of plants and animals that humans eat.

i have gone to this particular cave in padhan twice. the first visit was quite accidental in that me and my friends were just taking a hike from maribojoc town and we were hoping to cross the hills over to loon. however, someone in the area told us while we were resting, of a cave which had a corn field nearby that was the object of regular raids conducted by wild monkeys, so we decided to take a detour. we didn't see any moneys in the corn field but we found the cave whose entrance was then hidden from view by heavy vegetation. since we did not have any caving equipment, we only tried to go in as far as the natural light would allow... i'm wondering if those people had proper caving equipment and the necessary skills to use them.

"dili ko mutuo .... unsa man ang iyang motibo if sya galing ang nagpapatay?"

it appears that lacson did not need to have a motive, if he indeed was responsible for the murder of dacer and corbito. he simply was carrying out an order to do so by someone higher and more powerful than him, and who had the real motive to have the duo killed.

i was in lake sebu in 2006. stayed at punta isla resort for a couple of days whose hilly terrain was abound with various flowers of different shapes and colors that looked like an artist's palette. took the morning tour of the lake with a young and authentic t'boli girl as guide. went to points of interest like the municipal hall that is situated on top of a hill overlooking the lake, the mission house established by christian missionaries, the row of tourist shops along the road, and 2 of the 7 waterfalls. had the opportunity to watch a special evening presentation of various t'boli dances and sounds and ate tilapia cooked in all possible ways the whole time i was there. as a mountain retreat, lake sebu's weather is just perfect.

i'm not sure about senators in other countries bbut regarding senators in the philippines, it seems that they are ALL useless. case in point: there are questionable laws that get enacted into law that are originally sponsored by only one or a few senators. yet it gets majority vote. can something like this happen if our senators are competent at all?

i hope that this particular weather event sends home the message to the american leadership that they should and must sign and commit to the agreements and principles of the kyoto protocol in order to bring down to a considerable level the emission of carbon dioxide and other green house gases into the earth's atmosphere. the US is probably the worlds' largest carbon emitter in terms of per capita consumption of fossil fuels.

if we are to assess lacson's action of evading arrest and consequently giving up his opportunity to defend himself in court based on the saying that "flight is an admission of guilt", then he probably is guilty.

mdb, lacson flew the coop! as in milayas from the philippines to avoid arrest after the court issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the dacer-corbito double murder case. the NBI thinks he is somewhere in asia and is confident that they will get him soon once lacson is put in the so-called "red list" of the interpol.

"Aumentado issued an order to investigate Ms. Quirog. In the same article, Ms Quirog challenged the accuser, the president the Ubi group from Jagna to resigned. AMbot lang ug naa bay dagan sa investigation."

as far as i think, it should be liza quirog who should resign. she has been provincial agricultural officer (PAO) for several years, wa gyud nahitabo nga substantial sa agricultural sector sa bohol. she ought to be ashamed of her dismal performance as PAO.

quote from jas4: "at least I did not grow up in your place who keeps judging other people without any proof"

judging other people without proof? ikaw siguro ang naghimo ana. as far as i am concerned, i was merely making an observation. also, it was not a blanket statement that included boholanos. i was only talking about what i thought was the typical boholanos. not included in my statement are the non-typical boholanos. having said that, nganong masuko man kag kalit? i was not even referring to you... you know what? you not only express yourself like an ignorant 12-year old, you also think like one. this will be the last time that you will be hearing from me on this issue not because i am scared of you - whoever you think you might be - but because jerks like you do not deserve to be spent time on. you can rant and rave all you want but people here are much, much smarter than you are and they can see very well for themselves kun kinsa ang yabag.

"tilapia is done in upland also kay dali ra man gud mabuhi. But BFAR is conducting studies the African hito in upland. And is proven to raise income."

kasagaran fresh water fish pwede sa upland/inland fishponds.... bangus is found in fishponds everywhere from luzon to mindanao. lake sebu in south cotabato raises tipalia. agusan del sur is full of halwan; you will even find halwan buwad for sale along the highway. LA (los amigos) in davao city is home to the pantat (african hito) being raised in the area. they have a stretch of the highway - almost 1 kilometer long - that contains restaurants on both sides of the road that serve pantat, the most popular being sinugbang pantat and deep-fried pantat.

no, it's YOU who needs to grow up... i was merely verbalizing an observation and you being a member of this forum has every right to make your comment as well whether you agreed with me or violently disagreed with me. but what did you do? you did neither. instead, you reverted to making personal insults which was totally uncalled for. if you thought that my reply was kind of too strong for your personal taste, it is because you rightly deserve such a reply. ani lang na bay and this is how it works: treat other people in the same way you would like other people to treat you. if you can't follow this simple rule when interacting with other people in a community, may i humbly suggest that you go back to the primitive cave where you probably were born and grew up in.

this piece of news is not really new. inland and/or freshwater fisheries has been done in many areas in the philippines for quite sometime now even in traditional marine fishing grounds like the areas around dagupan, binmaley and alaminos in pangasinan. this area is even considered as the bangus capital of the philippines. what is strange though is that many areas in the visayas, bohol included, has been actively fighting illegal fishing activities in the last 2 decades in an effort to preserve the environment. however, many coastal resource management (CRM) consultants and experts don't really understand the core of the problem and thus subsequently fails to effectively address the real issues. fish is a commodity that a people buy and eat so demand for this commodity will always be present which in turn drives fishermen to resort to illegal fishing needs in order to maximize catch. needless to say, the way to fight illegal and destructive fishing methods should not be limited to police action but should also include programs to increase production of fish. this is where the importance of inland/freshwater fisheries comes in. fish ponds can be establish in inland/upland areas and fish cages can be established in coastal areas, with all of them mass-producing fish to meet consumer demand... paging CRM people in bohol.

di ba kaha pod ni patisoy lang sa mga government agencies nga nagpasiugda ani.

agree gyud ko nimo, bay bugsay... it's the 10th year that they have conducted this activity but nothing has been done to improve the ube in bohol; be it in terms of production level, bringing the production of this crop outside the traditional sources, or even launching an ube recipe that can be used to represent bohol in the same way that peanut kisses and tarsier are identied with the province of bohol. it is indeed very ironical that bohol, which boasts itself to be ube country and even immortalizes ube sa a distinct and proud boholano crop in the Bohol Hymn, continues to relegate ube as ingredient to some pork or beef dishes and even the lowly law-oy.  maayo pa ang baguio city which advertises as home to flowers, strawberries and fresh vegetables (and nothing whatsoever about ube) kay naa pay ube jam available anytime sa good shepherd convent and even at the pasalubong section of the public market. the same in davao city: you can buy ube jam at the mall anytime you feel like eating it. but in ube country that is bohol, you have to buy the ubeng bungoton at the public market (kung maswertehan kang naay baligya) and pick up the other ingredients like margarine, condensed milk, etc. at the grocery and then go home to make your own ube jam. what a crying shame! nag usikusik lang gyud ug kwarta nang taga provincial agriculture office para ingnon nga naay nahimo.

"Legarda, staunch environmental advocate"

"Legarda is one of the few national candidates of note, that has branded her public service anchored primarily on the protection of the environment."

"She recently represented the country in the Copenhagen "Climate Change" Summit attended by 120 country heads of state- where she was the only Asian speaker on the environment during the event."

these descriptive phrases that are alluded to loren legarda are all designed to get votes in may 2010 from the electorate especially from environment-conscious filipinos. loren legarda who claims to be an environmentalist is a bogus environmentalist. if she participated in the climate change summit in copenhagen, where absolutely nothing was accomplished in terms of curbing GHG emissions to slow down climate change and only succeeded in wasting millions of US dollars, it is because it is her job as UN regional champion for disaster risk reduction caused by climate change in the ASEAN region to be in that forum not because she is an environmentalist by heart and/or by choice. she was in copenhagen by force of circumstance- nothing really to crow about even if she was the only asian speaker in that international forum that accomplished nothing.

legarda is a member of the philippine senate. she would have been in a good position to do something, if not at least comment, on government policy that promote the use of technology that contributes to climate change, but she never did. sometime in 2008, GMA signed documents to effect the establishment of 6 coal-fired power plants in various parts of the country. we never heard one single word coming from the mouth of legarda asking why these power generation projects should use coal (aka the "dirtiest fossil fuel") and not renewable energy sources like solar or wind power. maayo pa ang mga LGU where the coal plants were planned to be set up kay mireklamo pa. but legarda? she was nowhere to be heard, nor found.

we should not feel proud that an asian like legarda has been given a big role in the ASEAN by the UN for disaster risk reduction because this action is only in response to the results brought about by climate change; it does not address how to mitigate the occurence of climate change. it's certainly nothing to be proud of. if climate change can be likened to a physical illness, the action of disaster risk reduction to mitigate the effects of climate change is similar to buying a lot in the memorial park and selecting a nice casket so that the family of the sick person is ready when the time comes.  i am not a doctor but i believe that the way to treat a sick person is to determine the cause of the illness and treat it there; not buy a memorial plan and casket. similarly, climate change can be addressed by looking at ways to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases that cause the rising of global temperatures and climatic conditions. only then can initiatives to reduce the risk of disaster be made.

quote from juliusgregpry: "writer's attention" not "attention's writer" and "doesn't have to be taken literally" and not "doesn't have to taken literally". It seems you want to be so technical and yet you commit your own errors also. Don't be to arrogant paisano!"

exactly my point, paisano. i deliberately made the "error" in my message to indaymen50 which you happily corrected -which i will not call typo errors because they are not- to show that we are not perfect. in all filipino dialects, the pronouns "siya" does not have a gender unlike english where there is a distinction if it is male or female. for this reason, i always give allowances for errors of this type where there is interchangeble use of he or she to describe someone especially if committed by filipinos and this includes you. to get a clarification whether you were talking about a male or a female, i chose to ask if you were talking about a male or female which to a smart reader like indaymen50 sounded like a stupid question, because i thought it was more polite that way than saying straight out that your use of the english language indicates the need for either more grammar lessons or more practice. i guess melrose is correct in saying to just let it be because this is really no big deal: i got the gist of the story now in the way you intended it to be, the use of both he and she notwithstanding so perhaps we can leave it at that. i hope this clears the issue... by the way, the gramatically-correct way of saying it is: Don't be too arrogant; not Don't be to arrogant. enjoy the holidays!

care = supposed be "are".

quote from indaymen50: "Naa  diay  laki  nga  magpatawag  ug  "SWEET"? Go  figure!"

just one of the ways to call the attention's writer that his pronoun can be be either misleading, confusing, or plain annoying. it really doesn't have to taken literally... by the way, i have heard of men who care called "sweet". naa gani puy laki nga nganlag "love"... just in case you didn't know- or haven't heard.

unsa man na siya, babae or lalaki. the writer both uses the word "his" and "she" to allude to the person. which is which?

quote from lorenzo: "Now I wonder if the Spanish conquistadores, merchants and priests that came to settle and colonize central visayas, particularly Cebu were from Northern Spain or not. Considering the architectural similarities."

lor, the similarities in spanish architectural styles on old structures like churches particularly in cebu and churches in northern spain where your colleague from school comes from may have something to do with the fact that miguel lopez de legazpi, who started the actual colonization in the philippines that saw the erection churches in the places that they stayed in and established their presence, was born in the town of zumaragga in the basque province of guipozcoa in northern spain. the biggest city in that region is bilbao and some buildings there might appear to be similar with churches in the visayas.

"That and the fact that Cebu is also probably the most heavily Spanish influenced province in the entire Republic.
"The Queen City of the South"/ the First Spanish Colony in the Philippines, as it is known, afterall."

if cebu city is the most heavily spanish influenced in the whole country, it is because this is where legazpi established the first spanish settlement upon arrival on philippine soil. the first structure that they built was a walled encampment that served as barracks which exists to this day as fort san pedro. it is now a tourist destination which is walking distance from the sto, nino cathedral. you may want to visit there when you get the chance. it houses on its upper level the cebu branch of the national museum which displays ancient treasures and relics taken from the wreckage of an old spanish galleon that was discovered off fortune island in batangas.  additionally, cebu city also hosts the oldest street in the philippines which is colon street.

the filing of COC by GMA as congressional candidate in Pampanga is a confirmationof earlier speculations that she will be doing so as part of her grand plan to become a member of congress so that she will qualify to become prime minister if and when she and her cohorts succeed in their plan to change the form of government from presidential to parliamentary. indeed, we as a people cannot stop her from filing her candidacy so she can see her plan achieve reality. however, we as a people can do something to foil her plan. let the pampanguenos put her in office as congresswoman, but the rest of the filipino nation can do this country and its poor people a favor by NOT VOTING for anyone running under GMA's party... in bohol, i have nothing personal against arthur yap running for a congressional seat in the third district. on the contrary, i think he is one of the best-performing cabinet ministers under the arroyo administration. but electing him to his desired position because of his abilities and the potential good work that he can do for bohol is myopic because he will be one of those congressmen who will elect GMA as prime minister (given that they succeed in getting the charter changed, and it's always good to assume the worst scenario). the bigger picture now neccesitates that a non-GMA cohort be put in office.

lor, i think the similarity of architectural styles of some churches in the philippines, spain and mexico that were built around the same period can be attributed to the fact that the architects of early philippine churches were spaniards... it was not until the arrival of legazpi that the colonization of the philippines truly began (the two previous spanish expeditions that anchored on philippine soil namely magellan's expedition and the one led by ruy lopez de villalobos did not stay long enough to do anything much toward colonizing the natives) and all his men, while not exclusively spaniards, started out from mexico. in fact, legazpi was already a longtime spanish emigrant to mexico when he was asked by the spanish king to lead an expedition to the philippine islands. thus, the structures made heavily influenced spanish architecture that reflected the artistic style of that period. i guess the spanish influence in all three places is the uniting factor that link all three together on a common ground.

miag-ao church in iloilo is one of the four churches in the philippines collectively entered as "baroque churches in the Philippines" in the list of UNESCO's world heritage sites.

the trouble with peanuts even though it contains a fairly significant amount of beneficial fats is that there is always the risk of ingesting a fungus known as aflatoxin which is widely acknowledged to be a carcinogen (cancer-causing). this happens when unscrupulous food processors choose to include peanuts that are likely to be contaminated with this fungus. these are the ones that appear shrunk and are darker in color. so i guess it's an eat-at-your-own-risk thing when dealing with peanut butter as consumers have really no way of knowing if all nuts that were ground into peanut butter were of the best quality.

in my opinion, sukang pinakurat of iligan is overrated. i bought one lapad two years ago and only around one-fourth of it has been used so far. to me nothing beats good old coconut vinegar, a little soy sauce and tons and tons of red hot chili (kolikot). but then again, i guess it all boils down to personal preference in the end.

kapal muks gyud ning ubang mga government officials. after they commit major irregularities while in office, they have the temerity to run for public office as if nothing happened. remember garci? after he was investigated by the senate blue ribbon committee, he ran for a congress seat representing one of the districts of bukidnon. now here comes bolante with the intention to run for capiz governor. the gall of this guy!!! he ought to be in jail instead. korina or any good-intentioned filipino for that matter has every right to tell people to be cautious of people with shadowy reputations like bolante.

the picture of a country scenery in zhangzhou, china which is posted on the first page of this thread looks a lot like what you would see in the cordilleras especially the stretch between baguio city and bontoc, mountain province along the halsema highway.

as much as possible, likayi ang pag transact sa bangko. kamo ray giilad ana nila. do you know why banks have mushroomed in bohol? sa una, you can count the number of banks by the fingers of one hand. karon, daghan na kaayo. this is because they see a lot of money circulating in bohol as a result for the most part by remittances from boholanos working abroad. do you know where all these money go? they go to other investments being engaged in by the owners of the bank. do you ever notice that most banks as well as pre-need companies are usually part of some business conglomerate? this is because they use banks and pre-need companies to siphon money from communities with good money circulation and use this money to fund other investments, mostly real estate. in other words, kanang inyong gi deposit, mao nay gigamit sa mga bank owners to finance real estate projects mostly sa metro manila, not in bohol. and what about the boholano depositor, unsay benefit nga nadawat? well, ani lang ni... for helping the bank make their money, the depositor -- instead of serving him coffee while he is waiting because he is the guy that enriches the bank -- is herded into a queue like cattle waiting to be slaughtered.

mao nay gitawag ug mama sa bisaya. in english, it is called betel nut. chewing of betel nut is not limited to muslims alone. if you go to the cordilleras, you will find out that the igorots are fond of chewing betel nut as well. sa mga pathways, be it cement or earthen, daghan ka makita nga pula nga luwa, obviously from the betel nut chewers. maski sa uban countries, people chew betel nut. in india, you can buy it from the sidewalk like you do with cigarettes. high-tech pa gyud kay naa silay daghan klaseng flavors :-)

ayaw ninyo kumpyansai ang candidacy ni erap. let us be reminded that an election is basically a contest involving numbers. he who gets the highest number wins. erap is still popular with the masses. mas daghan baya ang uneducated masa kaysa enlightened voters like you... so, if we want to make sure erap does not sit in malacanang again, an action to that effect has to be made before the elections and not leave him alone because we think he will not win because he just might.
