Miadto ... nagpadulong ... miabot ...

Ang present tense siguro ana is "nagpadulong pa" ... he he he, Joke. The problem siguro lies in the way we study our language, kay most likely we base it on basic English grammar patterns.

This could also be understood as short for "Wala siya kaniadto." or "Wala siya kaniadtong panahona." - - He was not there (at that time or when it happened).  Using the prefix "ni/nag", to denote past tense, instead of "mi/mag", is not a strict rule in Binisayang Sinugboanon. Example: "Nagbaktas" - - hiked/hikes (past and present); "Magbaktas" - - to hike (future)

"Wala siya muadto." - - He did not go.

"Dili siya niadto." - - He did not prefer it. He did not choose it. He did not like it.

"Dili siya muadto." - - He won't go.

Dili siya muadto.

Loon - Bohol / Re: Hacked Site (www.Loon.Gov.PH)
June 17, 2011, 02:11:07 PM
It could be hacked by someone who copied the info thereat and uploaded it into his own website. So that when anyone would search for Loon, Bohol he would be led to the plagiarist's own website. Plagiarist, I say, because the culprit may have done some editing on the uploaded information to make it appear that it is his own. Otherwise, he should have indicated his sources. We will not be surprised if another Bohol town's official website will be hacked.

Famous (or infamous) pud ang ubang Bol-anon nga mangopya og sinulat sa uban, ipang-upload sa ilang website or blog, then angkonon nga ilang sinulat. I say angkonon kay wala man isulat ang ilang source, kay gi editan man pud kintahay nila aron morag originally written by them. Nakabasa ko og ingon ani, both original ug ang plagiarized version. Luoy ang original writer kay gikawatan og intellectual property rights.

Binago. From "Binagol" or "Binagow", which means cooked inside a bagol (coco shell). Grated cassava with its juice squeezed out. Cooked plain or with brown sugar and/or young coconut strips. Best when grates are fine and served hot. Best with kinilaw and humba.

Binago is still sold every Saturday and Sunday at the Loon Public Market. By noontime, sold out na.

FALSE, too. But it is a most welcome compliment. If only for the memory of my tatay, uncle and auntie who were very good cooks. In fact, they made cooking a profession of sort as they were commissioned to cook for banquets in Loon and in other towns. Modesty aside, I can cook, too. So does my brother and a nephew.

Jagna - Bohol / Re: Calamay In Jagna A Booming Business
January 30, 2011, 10:19:48 AM
Calamay trivia:

1.  In Jagna, kalamay is manufactured in Barangay Can-upao only.
2.  The small coconut shell halves used by Jagna kalamay makers come from Misamis Occidental.
3.  Kalamay is also produced in Alburquerque, Tagbilaran and Tubigon.
4.  Kalamay is also produced and sold in Cebu, Southern Leyte and Negros Occidental (kalamay hati).
5.  Owing to scarcity of small coconut shell halves, plastic canisters, cellophane packets and banana leaves are used.

I have a nephew who is a college freshman at VSU. Most of his classmates are enrolled at BISU-Calape. Gisaway ug gikataw-an pa nila ang akong nephew kay nganong tua sa VSU mi eskwela nga "wa-il" kuno, as in wa mailhi nga eskwelahan. Ha ha ha ... my nephew will have the last laugh once these ignoramuses will realize there is no sense comparing BISU to VSU.

On November 11, 1849, Narciso Clavería y Zaldua, governor general of the Philippines from July 16,1844 until December 26, 1849, issued a decree requiring all Filipino natives to adopt Spanish surnames. It is evident that such decree was strictly followed in Loon where all family names are in Spanish. In other towns of Bohol, especially the interior municipalities that were not reached by the Spanish colonial administration owing to distance and to the Dagohoy rebellion which was still ongoing at that time, native-sounding family names were used. Such last names persist up to this day.

Due to marriage, some local residents have changed their last names to non-Spanish-sounding ones. A few of these surnames that are recently found in Loon are Bongay, Bongot, Laway, Pinat and Taray.

Church of the Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Established by the Jesuits in 1753, the Our Lady of Light Parish was ceded in 1768 to the Recollects who built the first stone church in the 1780s. The churches built in 1815, 1850 and 1853-54 were devoured by fire. The present façade is believed to have survived the last one. This "Crowning Glory of Recollect Architecture" and "Queen of All Heritage Churches in Bohol" was constructed when Fr. Jose Garcia was parish priest from 1854 to 1890. Domingo de Escondrillas, director of public works in Cebu, drew the plans. The extremely elegant Baroque facade of this biggest church edifice in the Visayas is the finest in Bohol. Consolidating the Moorish tendencies are the bas-relief carving, wooden balusters guarding the bell tower windows, and the pointed roofs. The sophisticated architectural styles of the Baroque, the Moorish and the Plateresque are evident in the Corinthian columns and fine details of the lace-like capitals. The painted ceiling of the interior, done by Ray Francia in 1938, is perfectly in step with the tiled (now GI sheet) roof and the main "retablo" embellished with roundels in bas-relief depicting scenes from the life of Mary. The faux dome depicts popular saints venerated by Catholics. Beside the church is the old convento, now Sacred Heart Academy, which was built during the term of Fr. Pedro Polo (1844â€"46).

Spanish-Era Mortuary Chapel. This hexagonal two-storey stone structure located across the Our Lady of Light Church is made of coral stone blocks or "tinableya" put together with a mixture of sand, lime and water. In olden times, mass was not celebrated for the remains of a dead person. Instead, they were brought here for final blessing by the parish priest before they would be buried. Originally tile-roofed, it is now used as an office and occasional showroom for special events.

Spanish Colonial Cemetery (1800-1860s). The circular layout of this structure is unique in Bohol. The stone walls called "cota" or "kuta" are built of coral blocks or "tinableya" put together with mortar, a mixture of sand, lime and water. Like those of big churches in the province, the internal layout of the chapel, which has six burial chambers, is cruciform with a transept or pair of arms across the nave. Graves of persons of low status were unmarked in historic times, otherwise wooden ones may have been used, thus nothing remains to identify each grave within the circular perimeter wall.

Inang-angan. Made of coral-stone blocks, this grand stairway of four flights and 174 steps was constructed under the direction of Fr. Antonio Yus, parish priest from 1847 to 1849, to improve contact between Napo (downtown) and Moto (uptown). A fifth flight of 38 steps leads to the convent (now Sacred Heart Academy) at the back of the Our Lady of Light church. The promenade concludes in the old wharf popularly called Tulay where a visitor gets a majestic view of the sea, the mangrove areas and the mountains of Loon and Cebu across the Cebu Strait.

These are the following:

The church of the Parroquia de la Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Parokya sa Birhen sa Kasilak) has been declared as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (formerly NHI). The unveiling of the marker has been scheduled for December 6, 2010.

Artists can still survive without the support of government. But then it is also the artists' obligation to close ranks and come up with worthwhile projects or project proposals that can gain the support of both the government and the private sector. The Bohol Arts and Cultural Council has a Visual Arts Division whose leaders and members may need some prodding for them to initiate certain activities.

Loonanon Visual Artists:

Milo Miranda (Architecture, UB)

Joel Aplasin - enlightened inmate painting from the national penitentiary.

Lucas Corciega - Canada-based visual artist (digital and creative photography).

Lemuel M. Cornito - resident artist, Meeril Arts; graphic Artist and T-shirt designer; oil painter. Cornito is an artist who experiments in regard to his subjects, medium and canvas.  He paints on textile, driftwood, old wood slabs, and chests or "kaban", Recently he experimented on painting mature yet unfilled coconuts (“buang nga lubi”).  The result was a hit among art enthusiasts.

Alanito Luminarias Gomez + - handicraft designer and, until his death, was Bohol's most prolific collage artist.

Ramon Pesidas Lapeña Jr. - painter; Fine Arts graduate of the University of the Philippines.

Lloyd Peter M. Lopez, MD - visual artist; municipal mayor of Loon; A self-educated artist, Mayor Lloyd once tried his hands on "Baza", a t-shirt business he put up with his friends.  He also paints using charcoal as medium and the human face as subject. When the Municipality of Loon joined, and won the grand prize, during the 2000 Bohol Sandugo street dancing and dance drama showdown, he designed the contingent's centerpiece, a representation of Tubig-Loon, with real water cascading from a mountain prop.  Recently he designed the logo of Loon's First Creative Industry Festival.

Reynald Romea Luminarias - US-based architect, photographer and digital artist.

Carlito “Carling” P. Masalta - oil painter; owner of Isla Vista, the only visual arts shop on Cabilao Island; erstwhile student of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines College Cebu. His clients are mostly tourists coming to Cabilao to bask in its quiet environment or explore the magnificent underwater panorama around the emerald island. A member of the Art Association of the Philippines, Carling has joined group exhibits, mostly in Cebu and Bohol.  His works, mostly in the realism and impressionism genres, have been exhibited three times at Shangri-La in Mactan.

Norman Mataflorida - licensed architect, graphic artist and well-known T-shirt designer and printer. His clients include not only Loonanons but also those from outside the town. Having been trained to draw, he occasionally produces sketches and illustrations. He worked in the Middle East where he designed concepts for interiors of buildings and offices.

Farley Meredores - Franciscan friar whose God-given talent in the visual arts produced quite a number of paintings and sculptures, mostly images of Jesus, Mary and some saints.  Growing up as a child in Moto Sur, he already showed signs of becoming an artist and craftsman as he frequented the shop of his neighbor, Dodong Simbajon, to observe how the latter fashioned human and other figures of reinforced concrete. Even at a young age, he was already tinkering with the sculptor's tools and was able to produce miniature statues and figures.  Farley designed and executed the main altar of the Mary Coredemtrx Shrine in Talamban, Cebu City.  When he was based in Bicol, particularly in Naga, Farley carved a huge "Pieta" figure that greets churchgoers of one of the city's Catholic churches.  Farley also dabbles in painting. A painting of his that shows baby Jesus kissing Mary, His mother, is on display at the Catholic Library in Naga City.  (Search for his works in the internet and be amazed.)

Reigh P. Monreal - publications management specialist; winner, Municipality of Loon Official Seal Designing Competition.

Rolando Paloso â€" painter and sculptor; one of his masterpieces is the huge statue of Francisco Dagohoy, Boholano hero, that welcomes all visitors to the provincial PNP headquarters.

Virgilio Q. Pomida - multimedia painter; married to a Loonanon; awarded as one of the top watercolor artists of the Philippines; winner of the Doña Modesta Singson Gaisano On-the-Spot Painting Contest for which he was invited to exhibit in the US.

Rene Eune "Coycoy" P. Ponte - painter, graphic artist and T-shirt designer. Artdom, his Loon-based printing shop, became a training ground for young artists and attracted quite a number of clients. He currently works as a graphic artist in Tagbilaran.

Redentor O. Razalo - architect and painter

Mario L. Relampagos - photographer; undersecretary of the Department of Budget and Management. Despite his very tight schedule, Relampagos still finds time for artistic pursuits, particularly art photography, which has also become a profitable business for this recipient of the PaghiuSadya 2005 Outstanding Loonanon Award.

Zosimo ‘Iyo Zosing’ P. Relampagos - Loon's most respected painter and sculptor.  He designed and executed Bohol’s most beautiful monument dedicated to Christ the King (Cristo Rey) which is found beside the Church of Our Lady of Light. His other works include the statue of Our Lady of Light on the façade of the Kasilak church; a replica of the grotto in Lourdes complete with the statues of the Virgin Mary and St. Bernadette, also found beside the Kasilak church; the "hugosan", a four-column platform that serves as main gate of the fortress-like church and venue of the annual Easter Sunday rites; and the Stations of the Cross inside the church of Dauis, his wife's hometown. He once had a shop in Tagbilaran called Mary’s Art, named after the Blessed Virgin and Mary Loquellano, his spouse.  The shop specialized in religious images carved on wood or painted on canvas. The prolific artist was best at painting “still life” and sculpting the Last Supper many of which now adorn houses throughout Bohol.  Iyo Zosing's children and grandchildren are also into art.  One of his daughters, Luz R. Rodriguez, an architect, is the mother of Sheila R. Ira, Sharon R. Lee and Sherlene, who all know how to paint.  Another daughter, Sonia R. Aliño, also has a painter for a daughter in the person of Esperanza A. Estomata. Iyo Zosing's youngest son, Budget Undersecretary Mario L. Relampagos, dabbles in photography.

The Relampagos Clan of Artists: Apolinario, Mikkay, Boudinne, Salvador, Manny, Appot, etc.

A certain Bishop Ites Jimenez is mentioned several times in this thread. Is he the same Msgr. Jimenez who serves with Msgr. Juan de Dios Mataflorida Pueblos in the Diocese of Butuan? I met him there a couple of years ago and I was informed that he kept looking for me after I treated him with some Bol-anon jokes and had him laughing through dinner.

That's a very good point, Isles. I didn't even see it that way. Thanks!!!  ;)

Well taken ang comment ni Isles. There is also a problem in regard to marketing the so-called recent "pop" songs produced by the musicfest. It seems easier to market the non-popfest music of the local bands. The phenomenal success of "Charing" and "Gikumot-kumot" suggests that Cebuano pop has indeed changed through the years.

For many years the type of songs that Msgr Rudy composed and arranged dominated the Cebu Pop for many years, until now. It seems that participating composers anticipate which type of songs can make the final cut of 12 finalists. Every year since the 1990s I always go to the Cebu popfest; nothing has changed. Mao-mao lang gihapon ang mga judges. Hangtud ang mga finalists nagbalik-balik na lang through the years. Bag-o pa lang mi retire as chairman of the board si Perry Aleonar, tigulang na kaayo. Usahay naay mga new blood sa mga judges, pero panagsa ra. Host Sam Costanilla's jokes are repetitive and boring na. Pero despite these, motan-aw gihapon ko, kay uroy ug naay surprise guests. Like this year (30th anniversary sa popfest), walay contest, pero dihay mini concert of "the best of cebupop" plus a full concert of vina morales. Basta Vina concert gani, grabe ang energy. Enjoy tanan.

Quote from: islander on November 03, 2010, 01:51:27 PM'sama sa usa ka damgo' i think is different from 'damgo man lang'.  yes, the former won top prize in the 2nd cebu pop music festival (the second placer then was 'kausa, nabasa ang tubig' by alan jayme rabaya).  i'm not familiar with 'damgo man lang'.

"Sama sa Usa ka Damgo" is the grand prize winner in the first ever Cebu Popular Music Festival (1981); second was "Musikang Binisaya"; and third, "Kausa Nabasa ang Tubig". Fr. Tikyo Solis' "Damgo Man Lang" is also a grand prize winner, I just can't recall the year. I was there when it was performed by Arthur Ungab. Search youtube for the choir version of this song.

Diha pay usa ka teacher, a good writer, si Mrs. Fuderanan.

Justino ‘Ning’ R. Romea wrote the original English lyrics of and composed the Bohol Hymn which was translated into "Awit sa Bohol" by Maxilende Ganade, music teacher of Holy Spirit School. He also composed the school hymns of RPC (UB) and BSAT.  He is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton" (which starts with the line "Buhi sa Kanunay"). He is the original and only composer/lyricist of this popular Visayan folksong which had been arranged by many composers, among them Biliran. This may be the reason why people say he co-wrote the song.  Romea also composed the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger.

Additional information regarding his father, Bernardo "Leon" Vidal Romea: Rondalla Trainer; Scriptwriter, Director and Musical Arranger for the "Drama" in Napo. Bernardo or "Pantaleon" or "Leon", as he was more popularly known, was born on March 12, 1895 in Barangay Napo to spouses Marcelo (Oyong Eloy) and Maria (Oyang Iyay) Vidal, a second wife.  His grandparents were Domingo Romea and Cecilia Ordubanes of Barangay Taytay. After completing his elementary education and first year of high school, the latter at Bohol High School, he qualified for a teaching post, a feat in those days.  On June 16, 1910, at age 15, he was appointed temporary teacher in Loon.  A few years later, he passed the teachers' examinations and went on to become principal for 19 years. Romea's command of the English language was grammatically flawless.  He bought American books and subscribed to local English magazines (e.g. Free Press, Graphics, etc.) hoping that his children would love or develop the habit of reading. They indeed became bookworms and their communication skills improved. His passion for music was such that he composed songs, organized rondallas wherever he was assigned in his teaching career, and promoted and participated in competitions.  This went on even through his retirement years.  He could skillfully play any of the string instruments in the rondalla but was at his best with the banduria.  Romea was keen in distinguishing the slightest discord that at times during rondalla rehearsals, he would suddenly wave a hand for a pause just to tune up a dissonant instrument. Romea was also called a "dramaturgo" for he wrote and directed stage plays or "drama" which always served as the culminating feature of the barrio fiesta celebration in Napo.  In fact, he is acknowledged as the original playwright, director and composerâ€"musical arranger of Napo’s stage plays that are now mounted on May 25 of each year without fail.  It is believed that Napo holds the record of staging the longest running series of annual plays in Bohol, if not the whole country.

There are conflicting reports about her children. One report says she bore two boys, now aged 12 and nine; another says the younger one is a girl. Both children now stay at their late father's sister.
