It is amazing how I truly connected to Leyte when I arrived. The winds that brushed my bearded face, the sun that darted on my brown skin, the sounds of the people, the faces of family whom I've never seen or met before (yet they knew of me!).

I saw and met my Lolo Nono (my paternal grand-uncle; the younger brother of my paternal grandmother).
The first time I saw him, he came to me and with his two hands, brushed my beard and laughed and exclaimed, "Rico kaayo, Dong, pariho ka sa imong papa! Rico kaayo!" (Rico is my father's nick name. lol)

We had dinner in lolo Nono's house; and sat with my grand-auntie, my uncles, aunts, cousins, and extended relatives in Padre Burgos.
It was so merry, so jolly-filled, so many stories being told, so many memories of old times, stories of my grandfather, my grandmother, my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, etc.

I felt so at home. I had to take a break from the merry time to think and take everything in. It was this time that I had to glorify God for the bounty of this feast, the magnitude of his Providence and of his Graces...for uniting me with my family, extended family.

All that I had asked for, prior to leaving for the Philippines, was given and granted by His Grace. I could not ask for anything more, as it was given.

Returning back to the house, I felt such a joyous feeling within me. A feeling of contentedness, completeness.

I realized that at that moment in time that I belonged there, that this happened for a reason. And opened a new chapter in my life, the realization of
My Leyteno blood and roots. My people. My island....

Congrats Lorenzo for rediscovering your people, by it, we truly appreciate our identity.. a homing instinct fulfilled..

Travel and Tours / Re: Andalucia, Spain
September 09, 2009, 02:41:29 PM
The two countries, the Philippines and Spain should strive hard to sustain its bilateral relations and to reconcile the past, at the mind of most Filipinos especially what is taught in the academe, Spain contributed so much of our nations misery as if it were the doing of old Spain in feudal 1900's and most Filipinos mindset stopped there like a suspended picture in air. That's why most Filipinos thought of Spain as feudal, conservative and religious. but the modern Spain changed so much after the civil war as what keko said. It was transformed in a modern European country as what other countries in Europe do. If the Philippines can connect this transformation in mother country, may that's the time a Filipinos may attain progress.

just a thought, maybe when the old Spain recognized the proclamation of independence by the katipuneros, maybe we retained the Spanish language because it is the official language of the ilustrado then and of course, we may be spared by Americans in colonizing because Spain recognized us as an independent country, what a tactical retreat by old Spain by then he, he

Former Panglao mayor survives slay attempt

The suspected assailant of former Panglao mayor Dr. Doloreich Dumaluan is charged with frustrated murder and three counts of attempted murder at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

Dumaluan sustained a gunshot wound in his left shoulder after a shootout with alleged security personnel of a newly constructed resort beside the beach resort owned by the former mayor in barangay Bolod, Panglao at 2:30 p.m. last Tuesday.

The former mayor was allegedly fired upon by one Teodulo Macalandag, a resident of barangay Tiptip, this city.

Macalandag, based on police criminal records, had been convicted of homicide and several cases of robbery.

Lawyer Aleck Francis Lim told the media that charges for frustrated murder and attempted murder will also be filed against Frank Toston and Larry Opada, both residents of barangay Songculan, Dauis; Satish and Jacinta Nair; and two still unidentified suspects who were present during the shootout.

An inquest hearing for the charges against Macalandag is scheduled on September 9 at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, Atty. Lim bared.

In his affidavit, Dumaluan said that a little past 2 p.m. last Tuesday, while he was at his drug laboratory near the Land Transportation Office (LTO), this city, he got a call from his resort supervisor Sixto Dejan informing him that an engineer from the Bohol Electric Cooperative (Boheco) together with Opada, who is the foreman of the construction in the nearby resort, were about to erect a post on the shore fronting his property.

The electrical connection was to be used by the nearby resort which is ongoing construction and owned by the Nair couple.

According to Dumaluan, he proceeded to his resort and instructed Dejan to stop the men from erecting the electrical post as it is within the 20-meter salvage zone and it would pose danger to the resort’s guests and people going to the beach.

While on his way to Panglao, the former mayor learned after calling up Boheco manager Carlos Itable that no Boheco personnel were dispatched to erect a post in Dumaluan’s beach resort.

When Dumaluan arrived at the resort, he instructed one of his security guards to follow him to the beachfront and confronted the man who introduced himself as the engineer from Boheco, whom the former mayor later learned to be Toston.

During the confrontation, Toston admitted that he was not actually employed with Boheco but were about to erect the post for the electrical connection of Nair’s resort.

Dumaluan told Toston and his companions that he would not allow them to erect the post ordering them to bring the post and their equipment out of his property.

However, when the men were leaving, Toston allegedly approached Dumaluan who was standing on the side of his beach property and shouted “What is your law?” (Unsa man gud imong balaod?)

Toston purportedly came “threateningly closer and even elbowed me”, Dumaluan stated in his affidavit.

That was when Dumaluan’s resort supervisor and two companions closed in screening Toston but the former mayor told them not to hurt the latter.

Toston turned to leave Dumaluan’s property together with his companions. Seeing that they were leaving, Dumaluan said he also turned towards his resort.

However, before he could start walking away, he heard the alarmed voice of resort supervisor Dejan shouting that one was holding a gun.

Dumaluan said he turned in time to see Macalandag shoot at him which hit his shoulder causing him to fall on the ground.

Dumaluan said that while he was already on the ground, he saw Macalandag and Toston firing several shots from their firearms towards his direction and his companions.

Upon his instructions, Dumaluan was rushed by personnel of his resort to the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital.

After several minutes while Dumaluan was lying and being treated at the emergency room, another wounded man came in whom he recognized as the one who shot him earlier.

Dumaluan said he immediately shouted for everyone to hear that this was the man who shot him, who was later identified as Macalandag, an ex-convict.

Dumaluan alleged in his complaint that Toston, Macalandag, Opada and the two other still unidentified suspects acted in conspiracy together with the Nair couple to commit the crime against him.

He hinted that other than the suspects who are now charged, other people may still be involved in the slay attempt.

The former mayor was brought to a hospital in Cebu for an operation to extract the bullet embedded in his left shoulder.

i was in Cebu Int'l Airport one time, we had to make a long queue because there was only one person in the booth.

the department of tourism has not been very aggressive in promoting our country. and the domestic problem discourages many tourists to come to our place.

for me, the redundancy of international airport is not a long time problem. it's a long time solution. pardon if this analogy will not suit for this argument. the marcoses built those huge hospitals in Manila, Phil Heart Center, Lung Cancer of the Phils, and National Kidney Inst. with so many people dying of poverty and hunger. but now, these hospitals have served their purpose.

I agree to your opinion glaz, in order for us to move forward as a strong and prosperous nation,  we should believe the good intention of our leaders in the gov't.  just like the Japanese who revered their leaders very much because that what their leaders felt  from their constituents. In our case, Filipinos seems entangled in prophetic curse and disdain for their leader and our leader's behave so.
Back to the bridge project, surely, the gov't.  has done its homework in considering its  impact the cause and benefits to social, environmental, economic, and political once the project will be realized.
And this kind of mega project is not just intended only for this generation, but for the second generation or third generation of Filipinos. Of course, we will not be there anymore but we may be spared from the  blame  because we did not prepare our projects  for them (and it should be the way).  Look at the monstrous traffic daily in the metropolis, that's happening because the past leaders did not consider our time.
So, the Panglao International Airport and Cebu-Bohol Friendship Bridge has a long term benefits impact projects

This project has been conceptualized long ago and it includes connecting the major islands of Visayas into bridges linking Panay Island to Negros, then Negros to Cebu, Cebu to Bohol, and Cebu to Leyte. It's not really a goodbye to sea travel but  a road travel is an alternative especially for the local tourists to drive their car around, a  tourism revolution in the Visayas hopefully will commence and our people will no need to   " langyaw"  other places just to seek job, then migrating to other places local or foreign should not be a economic circumstance but a career choice.

I am just saddened by the kind of development being implemented at Panglao beach area not just Alona beach but all other beaches in Panglao especially at Bohol Beach Club area where the burly guards shoo you away the moment you set foot on the beach in front of the resort which in fact it ( beach ) belongs to the public. There should be a Boracay like comprehensive development or much better in order to attract many local tourists and not just a previlege few.

maayo ra jud kay nasugdan na ang pagdemolish. Thanks to the mayor kay dunay gyud kay bayag!

Please be reminded that the illegal structures was probably built also during the administration who go easy on this 20 meters salvage zone because he is also a resort owner who do same violation by encroaching and obstructing the beach area.

Demolition starts at Alona

AMONG 13 RESORTS AFFECTED. Demolition team starts tearing down structures at resorts in the Alona beach area following non-issuance of TRO from the court. Though some resorts have complied with the EO issued on the 20-meter salvage zone, some are undergoing demolition which has started after the weekend. Foto DANNY REYES
Heading towards becoming moot and academic, no Temporary Restraining Order came out of the court over the weekend while some resort owners along Alona Beach seeking for it already started complying with the governor's executive order on the removal of structures within the 20-meter salvage zone.
PNP Prov'l Director Edgardo Ingking dispatched policemen to secure the safety of the members of the demolition team.
Mayor Alcala identified the 13 affected establishments as: Atlantis, Playa Blanca, Lost Horizon, Trudis Place, Aquatica Water Resort, Alona Sea Side, Alona Beach, Isis Bungalows, Casanova Beach, Alona Kew, Bohol Divers Resort, Oops Bar and Genesis Dive Shop.
Provincial Legal Officer Handel Lagunay expressed optimism that the provincial government will resolve the issue sooner as some of the 13 resorts that were sent notices of violation and demolition on May 15, had already complied.
Charlotte Resort, for instance, had reportedly removed their structures and moved them away from the salvage zone, while Genesis Dive Shop expressed willingness to transfer their structures at the salvage zone to the rear portion of their resort.
In fact, they had even started processing documents for building permits to implement the changes, Lagunay said.

Panglao Municipal Engineer Rogelio Bunao and Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala, for their part, assured the resort owners that the municipal government will issue building permits to construction works that prove relevant in compliance to Governor Erico Aumentado's Executive Order 13.
Charlotte and Genesis were among the 13 resort owners along Alona Beach, led by Paz Trotin of Bohol Diver's Resort, that had sought a court action in March last year to stop Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala from causing demolition of the structures.
After the provincial government issued, another notice of violation on May 15, the resorts owners filed a reiterative motion for the court to issue a TRO or status quo order to stop the eyed demolition.
The Provincial Legal Office opposed the issuance of a TRO, considering that human activities facilitated by these structures within the 20-meter salvage zone lengthened the exposure of Alona Beach to further degradation.
Lagunay explained that the provincial government aims to restore the white sands and rehabilitate the shorelines along Alona Beach by protecting them from erosion, as a way of implementing Article 51 of the Water Code of the Philippines which provides for the removal of structures within the 20-meter salvage zone.
Lagunay has also updated the public through the weekly program, Governor's Report, Friday about the marathon hearings that ran from June 1-4, and the ocular inspection that RTC Judge Fernando Fuentes III conducted on Thursday noon.
Fuentes personally checked the location of the survey marker that DENR had placed to delineate the 20-meter salvage zone and determine the types of structures there.
The ocular inspection and the proceedings of the hearings were expected to help Judge Fuentes decide on whether to issue a TRO or not. Saturday came, but no TRO came out. On the other hand, Lagunay also said that another establishment, the Casa Nova Resort, had reportedly filed another move to stop the demolition of structures within the salvage zone or environmental protection zone, but the provincial government still has to receive an official notice on this.
The demolition job immediately generated appreciation from the Alona Beach Community Association, Inc.
In a signed statement, DM Ballie, president of the association congratulated the mayor for finally implementing the law.
He said "we look forward for the clearing of the beach front and most especially the structures blocking the beach front from Aquatica corner to Seaquest Divers, as this will allow the entry of tankers needed to undertake the cleaning of septic tanks in the resorts and provide access during emergencies."

Beach owners seek TRO against demolition order
AT LEAST 13 beach resort owners recently petitioned for a court ruling to temporarily restrain Mayor Benedicto Alcala from implementing a demolition order set Monday.
Reports said even before the court could act on the petition, another resort, Casanova and represented by Atty. Dennis Hora filed a similar motion Thursday, stopping the mayor from proceeding with the demolition plan.
The ensuing legal battle for the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) put government and non-government groups into a grind, doing ocular inspections and hearing sides before the court resolves either Friday or Saturday, says Capitol Legal Officer Atty. Handel Lagunay.
Environmental Legal Assistance Center said some of petitioning resort owners have earlier signed undertakings manifesting their voluntary demolition of their illegal structures within the environmental protection zone.
Apparently fed up with the promises and feeling the pressure from environmentalists and local officials, Mayor Alcala finally sent the demolition ultimatum for Monday, June 8.
According to reports, Paz Trotin of the Bohol Divers Lodge and 12 other resort owners seek a TRO against Panglao chief executive who ordered the demolition of the illegal structures within the beaches’ 20-meter environmental protection zones.
Meanwhile Bohol environment officer Nestor Canda assured the embattled mayor of full government support for his decision to implement pro-environment laws.
While PENRO Canda admitted the mayor may be “pressured”, he assured technical personnel from his office to help the mayor in defending his stand in demolishing structures on public access areas.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa PIA, PENRO Canda explained that the local governments are tasked to implement the national and local laws as mandated in the local government code.
Failure to do so may be a cause for administrative sanctions, he added.
It may be recalled that since March of 2008, Mayor Alcala has sent notices of violation to the resort owners with illegal structures on the protected zones.
Reports said Mayor Alcala sent another set of notice of violation last May 15, 2009, one that pushed owners to petition the court’s reiterative motion for the initial request for the TRO and the institution of a status quo ruling, said Capitol legal officer Handel Lagunay at the weekly Governor reports.
Speaking for the Capitol stand, Lagunay cited Article 61 of the Water Code of the Philippines and insisted that Bohol needs to strengthen its tourism potentials and that is by moving back the illegal structures on the beaches, especially along the Alona stretch.
The legal battle came just in time when the whole country celebrates the environment month. (rachiu/PIA)

Lorenzo your correct! Reintroducing Spanish in our public high school will help to reawaken our cultural identity. We cannot deny it, Spain brought to us the Judeo-Helenistic culture from the West as the Iberian Peninsula ( Now Portugal and Spain ) once conquered by Rome. But the Spaniards never complained that psyche has been diminished because they were once governed by other races as they were also subdued by the Moors for long 800 years!
Yes, we were much ahead from other countries because of our historical past. Now, we can stride ahead of them if we just recognize the truth, let's look at our historical past with deep since of gratitude. Busca es verdad encontra Dios!
