The Bohol Chronicle
Amidst the mounting public perception that "bribery" is the order of the day for the Arroyo administration to hold support from government leaders, reports surfaced that the 47 municipal mayors of the province were given P500,000 "cash gift" from Malacanang yesterday.
This was leaked to the Chronicle following the arrival yesterday of administration Senator Mike Zubiri who met with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Bohol chapter at the Metro Centre Hotel mid-morning yesterday.
In an ambush interview by the Chronicle at the hotel, Sen. Zubiri strongly denied the report saying he just wanted to check with the mayors on what was done with the P500,000 given to them earlier this year. The senator admitted he committed P1 million (for projects) to each municipal mayor. However, he only gave half of his commitment during his previous visit here.
He denied having given the mayors the balance of P500,000 yesterday.
The denial of the senator was supported by Provl Board Member Josephine Jumamoy, former LMP Bohol president who was also interviewed by the Chronicle when the meeting of the mayors was about to culminate at noontime yesterday.
