Return the 'Pajeros' to P-Noy, CBCP tells bishops
By Janice M. Cave

An official of the influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has suggested that the sports utility vehicles donated by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to several bishops should be returned.

“Dapat lang na mag-cooperate ang mga kapwa obispo natin na sangkot sa usapin na 'yan. At dapat ring ibalik o isauli na yang mga sasakyan na yan sa pamahalaan para matapos na ang usapin. Pag hindi kasi, lalala lang yan at kung anu pang mga haka-haka ang lalabas dyan [Bishops involved should cooperate. They should return the vehicles to government to put a stop to this controversy. If not, it will aggravate and speculations will arise]," Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez said in a radio interview over Church-run Radyo Veritas.

Iniguez, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on public affairs chairman, said the issue is getting worse and is being used by politicians for grandstanding.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes agreed with Iniguez's proposal to return the SUVs to the government so that the Catholic Church will no longer be dragged into the PCSO controversy.

"That’s a good suggestion. Ibalik lahat ng mga sasakyan na 'yan kay PNoy. As I have said, these investigations are overkill... Bago pa man nagkaroon ng Senate inquiry, sabi ko kakaladkarin talaga pangalan ng mga bishops dyan. Kahit hindi naman ginamit na personal ng mga bishops ang sasakyan palalabasin nila na personal na ginamit [They should return the vehicles to PNoy... Even before the Senate inquiry, I said they will drag the bishops into the controversy, even if they did not use the vehicles for personal purposes, they will still insist they did]," he said.

"Kung mayroon dapat imbestigahan, ito ang mga tiwaling pulitiko na nagnanakaw sa kaban ng bayan. Huwag nilang pag-initan ang mga obispo na tunay at totoong naglilingkod sa mga mahihirap [If there's someone who should be investigated, it should be the corrupt politicians and not the bishops who truly help the poor]," he added. (PNA)

Kung sayop man o labag sa balaod (as per constitution) then they should have disapproved the request in the first place. But if the highest office in the land (President) has given the "go signal" aw, mag ambak=ambak jud kos kalipay.  :D

This is politics at play!  :P

This event shocked even me. Di ko motuo ug way laing relihiyon. Bawo ninjo.

Bishop: I used SUV for gov't work, not for luxury
By Dennis Carcamo (The Philippine Star) Updated July 08, 2011 11:31 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos today clarified that the sports utility vehicle given to him by former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was used for actual government work and not for luxury.

Pueblos stressed that he used the Pajero to go to areas in Caraga region that have difficult terrain, which cannot be reached by own car. He said he was helping the government look into the incidents of extra-judicial killings that time.

"She (Arroyo) recommended me as member of two Commissions -- the Melo Commission for extra-judicial killing and also for the Zenarosa Commission to stop private armies before election. So we have to go to Marawi, we have to go to far-flung places for the suspects,” the bishop told Church-run Radyo Veritas.

He added: “We have to go Masbate, Samar and these areas that I really feel I needed mobility. This is not luxury, but a work I have, not only for the Catholic Church or the diocese itself but it is actually for the work in the government."

Pueblos also stressed that the vehicle was also used to reach indigenous people in far-flung areas, lay leaders.

“We are helping them to build schools and bridges," he said.

The bishop added that he would gladly return the SUV to the government if asked to.

"I’d been riding my own vehicle. If that's necessary, that’s not really a problem," Pueblos said.

Pope hands off on bishops in PCSO controversy—Ambassador Tuason
990AM, INQUIRER.net
10:28 am | Friday, July 8th, 2011

MANILA, Philippines – Pope Benedict XVI is adopting a hands off policy on the controversy surrounding Filipino bishops accused of receiving SUVs and cash from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See Mercedes Arrastia-Tuason told 990AM Friday.

“The Holy Father will not comment on something that is a domestic problem,” said Tuason from the Vatican in a phone interview with reporter Chona Yu.

Tuason added that there was still nothing definite in the investigation.

“When the CBCP [Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines] said that their conscience was clear, I believe that,” Tuason said.

The Senate blue ribbon committee has started its inquiry into allegations that bishops were given SUVs bought from funds of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). The inquiry was prompted by a disclosure from the new PCSO management under Margarita Juico identifying six Catholic bishops and an organization that received SUVs and cash worth P8.3 million in the last three years of the Arroyo administration.

Our Ardhdiocese (diri sa New Orleans) is one of the biggest recipients sa Federal grants/money (from the US Government) because of the charity works nga involved ang among Archdiocese, left and right jud na (Catholic Charities, Food Harvest, Home for the Senior Citzens, etc). Pero wa may kuskos balungos deri nga recipient ang simbahan sa daghang tabang sa gobyerno maski pa there is a clear separation sa Church and State sa America.  :P

that's why i'm interested in how this whole soap opera will pan out.  i hope it's just the lieutenants of the president and not he himself who's initiating all these witch hunts aimed at the previous administration.  how can this administration move on?  i've always been for p-noy and what he symbolizes; i hope that he won't disappoint.

what should be questioned here is what funds were used and how legal was its use, not the recipients who had no control of the source of gifts.

Unta the CBCP will come up with a clearer policy on accepting and REQUESTING gifts and donations from private individuals specially government officials and offices. Aron di na mahitabo ning samang hitaboa.

Bitaw, no? Seems needful in hindsight, yes. Pero lisod i-anticipate ni nga sitwasyon.

As things stand, rightly or wrongly, things will never be the same again...
