Millionaires in the House

House of millionaires
Manila Standard Today
By Christine F. Herrera
May 22, 2009

Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, wife of the embattled senator, posted a net worth of P1.046 billion making her the richest and the only billionaire among members of the House of Representatives.

Of the 238 House members, 234 are millionaires, including party-list congressmen, as shown in their statement of assets, liabilities and net worth as of Dec. 31, 2008.

Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ranked 8th at P179.98 million with zero liabilities while Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco, son of San Miguel chairman Eduardo Cojuangco, was 45th with P58.94 million net worth.

But Marcos’ cousin, Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of Leyte, emerged the second richest congressman, with a net worth of P477.2 million. The top 10 multimillionaires included San Jose del Monte City’s Arturo Robes with P441 million; Iloilo’s Judy Syjuco, P265 million; Tarlac’s Monica Prieto Teodoro, P232 million; Iloilo’s Ferjenel Biron, P191.3 million; Laguna’s Edgar San Luis, P165 million; and Pampanga’s Aurelio Gonzales, P153.48 million.

President Arroyo’s two sons and brother-in-law were among the top 30 multimillionaires, including House Speaker Prospero Nograles. Negros Occidental’s Ignacio Arroyo is the richest among the Arroyos, ranking 13th with P140 million in net worth; Pampanga’s Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo ranked 23rd at P99.24 million; his brother Camarines Sur’s Diosdado “Dato” Arroyo, was listed at 28 with P89 million in net worth.

Daghanang kwarta. Sad to hear lang that most of that money comes from the people.

Intawn, luuy pood ta kai pobre man ta. Okey ra man pood. Kai mohatag man pood ang Ginoo nato sa ijang Grasya. So long as we work hard and honestly and ask for His help.

Mo provide raman pood ang Ginoo nato. In HIS own way.

To God be the Glory!

before it was anakpawis' ka bel or crispin beltran as the poorest representative now it's his sucessor rafael mariano as the poorest among the poorest representative with a networth roughly P55,501.72.

The top 10 richest congressmen are:

Rep. Cynthia Villar (P1.05-B) - Lone District of Las Piñas
Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez (P477-M) - Leyte 1st District
Rep. Julio Ledesma IV (P447-M) - Negros Occidental 1st District
Rep. Arturo Robes (P441-M) - Lone District of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan
Rep. Judy Syjuco (P265-M) - Iloilo 2nd District
Rep. Monica Prieto Teodoro (P232-M) - Tarlac 1st District (wife of DND secretary gilbert teodoro)
Rep. Ferjenel Biron (P191-M) - Iloilo 4th District
Rep. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (P180-M) - Ilocos Norte 2nd District
Rep. Edgar San Luis (P165-M) - Laguna 4th District
Rep. Aurelio Gonzalez Jr. (P153-M) - Pampanga 3rd District

The top 10 poorest:

Rep. Rafael Mariano (P55-T) - Anakpawis
Rep. Teodoro Casiño (P118-T) - Bayan Muna
Rep. Adam Relson Jala (P782-T) - Bohol 3rd District
Rep. Satur Ocampo (P895-T) - Bayan Muna
Rep. Mujiv Hataman (P1.5-M) - Amin
Rep. Liza Maza (P1.5-M) - Gabriela
Rep. Benjamin Asilo (P1.9-M) - Manila 1st District
Rep. Pedro Pancho (P2-M) Bulacan 2nd District
Rep. Sharee Ann Tan (P2.1-M) - Western Samar 2nd District
Rep. Narciso Santiago III (P2.9-M) - ARC

you will notice that among the top 10 richest, 2 of them are from Iloilo. Aside from that 2 are cousins and 2 are wives of top level politicians in our country. 1 a wife of a senator and the other 1 is a wife of a former congressman and current DND secretary who openly stated he's aiming for the top post in next year's national election.

you will notice that among the top 10 poorest, 6 are from partylist groups. another significant fact is that from 5th to 10th poorest are millionaires. what's good in there is Bohol's 3rd district and first termer congressman relson jala is 3rd among the poorest but's close to million. let's just hope that if ever he will get a 2nd term, his SAL will not reach millions.

Cynthia Villar's fortune will only increase Manny Villar's misfortune at the Senate ethics committee hearing.

Quel, they are into real estate development, among other businesses.  If I am not mistaken, from rugs to riches ni si Manny Villar.

I think that's the reason that Manny is at the center of the ethics committee investigation. Their conjugal wealth is so glaring that their political foes are looking for chinks in their gilded armor. They are saying that the multi-million road projects that were approved because of strings pulled by Manny benefited his real estate projects towards the south, increasing the value of his land developments, and consequently of his net worth.

I remember that there was a time Manny's real estate projects faced rough sailing that his executives at the Crown Asia, some of whom I know, doubted that his foray into politics could help at all. There was even a time when they were servicing debts by dacio en pago (paying creditors in kind, that is, by land). We know of course that Cynthia booted herself out of and eventually sold Capitol Development Bank, which then had substantial exposure to the family real estate development projects.

Now it appears that they have tided over that critical period of cashflow bottleneck by their increased visibility in politics. Landed wealth, after all, is dependent on the market perception of your value and credit.

I guess Manny has mastered the art of melding business and politics, which not too many have been successful at. But it's too early in the day to tell if he can overcome the new obstacles he's facing. From the looks of it, his political foes have no intention on easing their bid to trounce him.

Thanks, Ray.  It makes me wonder, how can they distinguish which one goes to the SAL of Mrs. Villar and which one goes to Mr. Villar when they are married.  I thought that what she declared is their conjugal net worth.
