Mammoth, a Pinay shone in this film in 59th Berlinale
« on: February 18, 2009, 04:31:37 AM »

This film was highly acclaimed in Berlinale but sad to say it did not get any prize or award.
Mammoth revolves around successful New York couple Tom and Ellen, their eight year-old daughter Jackie and their Filipino nanny Gloria. On a business trip to Thailand Tom realizes that he wants to change his life. His decision sets in motion a highly intense and dramatic chain of events.
Mammoth” is directed by critically-acclaimed Swedish director Lukas Moodysson.
The movie also star mexican actor Gael Carcia Bernal of the award-winning movies like “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (And Your Mother Too), “El Crimen del Padre Amaro” (The Crime of Padre Amaro), and Hollywood actress Michelle Williams of Dawson’s Creek and Brokeback Mountain.
The movie is similar to some Filipino movies in which the story will revolve in a love triangle between a businessman (Bernal), his wife (Williams) and the nanny (Necesito).
Necesito is not a superstar in the Philippines, but she is a respected actress on stage, film and television productions. Necesito passed a rigorous audition to bag the plum role.
Necesito bested other respected local actresses in the “Mammoth” tryouts, including Alessandra de Rossi, Chinchin Gutierrez, Joyce Jimenez and even seasoned theater and screen thespian Pinky Amador.

59th Berlinale

Lukas Moodysson tell how hard it is for each character involved to do his role well. This is about rich and poor, family and career.
Leo (Bernal) and Ellen (M Williams) are a happy couple with a daughter living in a posh loft in New York. Both are ambitious and successful in their careers. Gloria portrayed by M Necesito, worked hard as a nanny to save money and secure the future of her 2 sons left in the Philippines.
Leo´s travel in Thailand was extended and through this he met Cookie, a Thai prostitute. He clumsily fell in love but he misses his family in New York. Gloria suddenly decided to go home because one of her son was inured in an accident.
Ellen observed how her daughter missed her nanny.
Leo came home to his family, everyone seemed happy.
The film showed how each of the actors suffers from this internal conflict, choosing what really makes them happy, how to realize life to the full
In one interview,   L Moodysson the director, said, that manpower from the third world countires are badly needed. He added further if this group formed a contingent, New York City ( just to name as an example)  without nannies, househelpers, caregivers is impossible to imagine.
