Jose P. Rizal in Madrid
« on: January 05, 2009, 10:49:16 AM »

Statue of Rizal in Madrid.
Considered as a 'Hijo de Espana Madre' by many Historians and apologists

Representative of the Spanish Cortes (Congress) and President Arroyo salute the statue of Rizal in Madrid.

Rizal is vindicated. In his life, he loved Spain as he mentioned Her in his writings as ,"Madre de Las Filipinas Islas." Rizal left this world, writing his last poem "Mi Ultimo Adios" and wrote it in Spanish as a way to share his love of Spain till the very end. Even in his death, he did not shout negatives to Spain, the very nation that he loved so dearly--equal to his Filipinas.

Had Rizal lived to see this picture, he would have been vindicated.

That, in the end, only after his death, is he considered and called by Spaniards as "Hijo de Espana Madre"

Why is Rizal so loved by Spaniards?

Is it because he wrote to admonish Spain?
Nay!

Is it because he wrote to glorify Revolution?
Nay!

It is because he wrote--about the Beauty of his 'Mother Spain'.

His love of Spain, as a Filipino, eternalizes the Spaniard's influence. It reminds the Spaniard of his duty to history.

If such a Filipino can love Spain so much, how much more should I love my own country?!

Rizal is Eternalized in Spain.

He is regarded as "Hijo de Espana Madre."

A Son of Spain.

As one of their own..

Statue to Dr. Jose P. Rizal in Madrid.

So why is Rizal's statue was here in Spain? You might ever wonder why the Spanish government was convinced enough that Rizal deserve a monument to his honor. It was in 1996 in commemoration of his death centenary when it was erected.

He was executed by the Spanish Colonial Government, but his execution was never ordered by the Government of Madrid.

As Much as Rizal Loved Spain, So Spain gives respect to Her own 'Hijo'. So that future generations of Spaniards will never forget the name of RIZAL.

Isn't it amazing?

That even today, in the 21st century, there are Spaniards that are nostalgic when Philippines was part of Spain?

My question lang--more so my interest in the psychology of their nostalgia.

It intrigues me that the Spaniards today could care less about its former colonies in the Americas, but hold such a strong endearing nostalgia for Las Islas Filipinas?

Then it occurred to me from a conversation with a friend that the very reason Spain went abroad was to find the "Spice Islands". The Spanish discovery of North and Southern American was purely coincidental/accidental. Their goal was not The Americas, but for the Malay Archipelago and Cathay. For the rich ports of Asia.

The Loss of the Philippines in 1898 ended Spain's Empire.
The Philippines was the very reason for her Global Expansion.

Even with their Hispanization of the Philippines and their mandates to turn the Philippines into a copy of Spain, still, they could not prevent revolution. Could not prevent the dissent of the Filipinos.

Over 100 years after Spain lost the Philippines, she still longs Her.

The Mexicans, the Argentines, the Columbians, the Bolivians will say, "Why will not Mother Spain erect statues of Simon Bolivar, of Fuentes, of Iturbide, and Romero in the plazas of Madrid?"

"Why does Mother Spain glorify a Filipino Indio and not a Spanish Creole, a Spanish Peninsulare of the Latin World?"

Then the Spaniard will respond, "Because you Argentines, Columbians, Mexicans, Bolivians, Peruvians, Venezuelans, Chileans uttered hatred of Spain in your revolution. On the death bed of your great leaders, they ushered curses and spite towards Spain.

This Indio is no ordinary Indio. This man was Sr. Dr. Rizal. A gifted man. That on his last breath and last day, he ushered no curses to Spain. And on his last day, wrote 'Mi Ultimo Adios' in Spanish and not in his own native Tagalog. That on his last breath, he not once ushered hatred for Spain. But love for his Filipinas and Spain.

That is why Spain Loves Rizal. "

Dr. José Rizal stayed from April to June 1886 in the house of Pastor Ullmer in Wilhelmsfeld near Heidelberg. Here he finished his famous and important novel "Noli Me Tangere".
Two times a year  -  on June 19 and on December 30 - there are meetings of  the members of the "Knights of Rizal" of the Wilhelmsfeld-Heidelberg-Chapter and other chapters from Germany and  European countries to honour the Philippine hero.

FLOWER in Heidelberg, Germany (poem- sinulat ni Rizal )

AN DIE BLUMEN VON HEIDELBERG
Reist in die Heimat, fremde Blumen,
die ihr des Wandrers Weg gesäumt,
reist dorthin, wo er seine Lieben
    beschützt vom blauen Himmel weiss.
Erzählt vom Pilger in der Ferne,
der sich nach seiner heimatlichen Erde sehnt.

Go and say... say that when the dawn
First drew your calyx open there
    Beside the River Neckar chill,
you saw him standing by you, very still,
Reflecting on the primrose flush you wear.    Geht, Blumen, und erzählt
    vom ersten Sonnenstrahl,
    der am kühlen Neckarufer
    eure Blüten öffnete und,
    versunken in Gedanken
    an der Heimat ew'gen Frühling,
    den stillen Wanderer
    an eurer Seite fand.

Say that when the morning light
Her toll of perfume from you wrung,
While playfully she whispered, "How I love you!"
He too murmured here above you
Tender love songs in his native tongue.    Erzählt auch von dem sanften Wind,
    der mit euch spielend,
    euren Duft euch raubte,
    während er vertraute Liebeslieder
    in der Muttersprache sang.

That when the rising sun the height
    Of Koenigstuhl in the early morn first spies;
Is pouring life in the valley, wood, and grove,
He greets the sun as it begins to rise,
Which in his native land is blazing straight above.    Erzählet von der Morgensonne,
    die den Königstuhl vergoldend
    schimmernd durch die Nebelschleier
    Wald und Flur erwachen liess.
    Hier noch in ihrer Morgenröte,
lässt sie daheim schon den Zenit erglühen.

And tell them of that day he staid
And plucked you from the border of the path,
Amid the ruins of the feudal castle,
By the River Neckar, and in the silvan shade.
Tell them what he told you
    As tenderly as he took
Your plants leaves and pressed them in a book,
Where now its well worn pages close enfold you.     Erzählet, wie dieser Wanderer,
noch ehe jener Tag sich neigte,
    am Wegesrain, am Neckarufer,
    in Waldes Schatten und
    des Schlosses alte Mauern
    euch Blumen brach.
Erinnert auch, was er euch sagte,
als er behutsam eure welken Blätter
    geliebten Bücherseiten anvertraut.

Carry, carry, flowers of Rhine,
Love to every love of mine,
Peace to my country and her fertile land,
Virtue to her women, courage to her men,
    Salute those darling once again,
Who formed the sacred circle of our home.    Tragt meine Liebe in die Heimat,
bringt ihrer Erde, die so reich an Früchten,
    Frieden,
    Vernunft den Männern,
    Klugheit ihren Frauen,
    Gesundheit allen guten Menschen,
die der Geborgenheit des Vaterhauses sicher sind.

And when you reach the shore,
Each kiss I press upon you now,
Deposit on the pinions of the wind,
And those I love and honor above and adore
Will feel my kisses carried their brow.    Erreicht Ihr Blumen dann den Strand,
so lasst die Flügel einer Brise
den Kuss, den ich euch gebe, weitertragen,
dass er als Zeugnis meiner Liebe
berühre, was mir lieb und heilig ist.

Ah, flowers, you may fare through,
    Conserving still, perhaps, your native hue;
Yet, far from fatherland, heroic loam
To which you owe your life,
    The perfume will be gone from you;
For aroma is your soul; it cannot roam
Beyond the skies which saw it born, nor e'er forget.     Doch ach, ihr Blumen, wisset:
    Fern der heimatlichen Erde,
    der das Leben ihr verdankt,
    verlieret ihr den Duft,
    auch wenn eure Farben leuchten.
Denn der Duft ist eure Seele,
    die den Himmel,
    unter dem sie sich entfaltet,
    nie vergessen noch verlassen kann.

    (übertragen ins Deutsche von
Elke und Fritz Hack Ullmer, KOR)

t was in Ludwigsplatz 12 where José Rizal wrote his nostalgic poem "A las Flores de Heidelberg",  one of his best poems, marked with fluency of expression and intensity of emotions.

The castle of Heidelberg with the Neckar-River - seen from the "Philosophenweg"

The German 'Fruehling' (spring) was the resurrection from the dead of the winter. It was the time when
Dr. José Rizal, contemplating the flowers which decked
the university town of Heidelberg, was attracted by
the freshness and beauty of surroundings, so beautiful
that, in his letter to his dear ones back in sunny Philippines he would describe, "it makes one want to burst on to singing". But in spite of all the beauty
before him, he still longed for his homeland, thus expressing his sentiments in the following verses:

 A LAS FLORES DE HEIDELBERG
Go to my country, go foreign flowers!
Planted by the traveller on his way,
And there beneath that sky of blue
    That over my beloved towers,
Speak for this traveller to say
What faith in his homeland he breathes to you.

Go and say... say that when the dawn
First drew your calyx open there
    Beside the River Neckar chill,
you saw him standing by you, very still,
Reflecting on the primrose flush you wear.
Say that when the morning light

It is ironic that Jose P. Rizal was discriminated in Philippines and not in Spain.

He studied in the University Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine, but did not complete the program because he claimed to have been discriminated by the Spanish Friars there.

Instead, without his parents' decision on on his own whim, Jose P. Rizal went and enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid Colegio de Medicinae. Where he finished and earned his Doctorate of Medicine.

Ironic that he experienced little to no racism in Spain but more so in Philippines?

Rizal was a graduate of the prestigious Universidad Central De Madrid. One of the finest institutions in Spain and in Western Europe. It is comparable to England's Oxford or America's Harvard.

Rizal was a lover of Europe. He specialized in Ophthalmology (Eye care) in Paris. And further studied in Heidelberg University in Germany.

After he conquered Medicine in Spain, he conquered France and Germany.

Those who executed him had no right to touch Dr. Rizal. No right what so ever. The man was leagues beyond their comprehension or level. Their dirty hands and foolish violence had no right to touch his intelligence.

Dr. Rizal was definiately and truly a giant of a man.

Can you imagine, graduating medical school is alone difficult. But Rizal finished medicine in Spain, then specialized in Paris Medical School, then further specialized by studying in Heidelberg University School of Medicine. 3 Medical Schools.

Genius he was. Genius he will always be.

Mo admit ko, there are times galing that I find difficulty in the work load of studies. And sometimes I think about Dr. Rizal. To think that he studied 10,000 miles away from Philippines, away from his family. And the only communication he had with his family was through pen. Which would take weeks even months to deliver. Yet, Rizal was able to finish his studies in Medicine and fight and overcome his own difficulties; economic, academic, etc.

I do find strength in Dr. Rizal's own tribulations and in his triumphs.

It is a reminder for all of us that with dedication, and strong whit, things can be achieved.

That is why I like Dr. Rizal. His words and his actions are so very humanistic. Universal.

Oh I wish I could have met the man. The questions I would ask him~

Someday gusto ko mo visita sa Spain, jud.
I want to touch the ground of Mother Spain.

And lay a little orchid on the statue of Dr. Jose Rizal.

Because a friend of mine wanted to see him there. And wanted to see Spain.
