MANILA, Philippines—Hail! We have three new party-mates!
Still reeling from defections, the Lakas Kampi CMD can't help but break the good news that three lawmakers are officially joining the ruling party to campaign for Gilbert Teodoro Jr.
Representatives Zenaida Angpin (Manila), Ramon Durano (Cebu) and George Arnaiz (Negros Oriental) have quit the Nationalist People's Coalition to join Lakas Kampi CMD, secretary general Raymundo Roquero said on Thursday.

Pressures from NPC hierarchy for party-members to back Nacionalista Party candidate Senator Manuel Villar Jr. forced the three to resign and formally join Lakas Kampi CMD and openly support Teodoro, he said.
“They're being pressured to support another candidate. I think it's Villar. They didn't agree to that because they're supporting Gibo. They decided to resign instead,'' Roquero said by phone.
The three are set to take their oath before House Deputy Speaker Amelita Villarosa, party chair, anytime, according to Roquero.

The NPC, which is part of the administration coalition in the House, is fielding Senator Loren Legarda for Vice President. It has declared it won't endorse Villar, Legarda's presidential candidate.

The ruling coalition had been rocked by the defections of key allies, including Romblon Representative Eleandro Madrano and Governor Natalio Beltran to NP, and Albay Governor Joey Salceda, and Mandaluyong Representative Neptali Gonzales II to the Liberal Party, among others. Previously, former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis Chavit Singson and Bukidnon Governor Jose Zubiri defected to the Nacionalista Party.
Explaining the significance of the entry of three new members, Roquero said, “They will greatly bolster the homestretch drive of Secretary Gibo which is gaining ground. The party is definitely getting stronger.”
According to Roquero, Isabela Representative Giorgidi Aggabao, also of NPC, has maintained that he is backing Teodoro and denied reports that he has cast his lot with Villar.

Roquero said he believed that several other NPC lawmakers were quietly supporting Teodoro despite the latter's rift with his uncle and NPC founder, business tycoon Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco.
“I think they find him to be the most competent and most qualified,” he said.
Teodoro bolted NPC supposedly because of differences with Cojuangco and joined the Lakas Kampi CMD, which eventually endorsed him as its presidential candidate.

So deeply hurt by his defection without saying goodbye, Cojuangco's wife had declared: “Anybody but Gibo.” To this, Teodoro later retorted that he puts the country's interest above the “hurt feelings of a family.”
Cojuangco's daughter, Lisa Cruz, had joined the campaign of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. of the Liberal Party.
