The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 supports a proposed law granting additional benefits to Filipino centenarians, an official said.
The bill will help
alleviate the plight of poor senior citizens, said Aileen Lariba, DSWD 7 information officer.
Under House Bill 834, otherwise known as Centenarians Act of 2010, Filipinos who will celebrate their 100th birthday will receive P100,000 and a letter from the President.
Other proposed benefits include additional cash reward from the local government unit where they are residing and 50 percent discount and exemption from the value-added tax.
Under the bill, the government will also give posthumous plaques of recognition in honor of deceased centenarians to their nearest surviving relative.
â€DSWD supports whatever bills will be advantageous to senior citizens, who are a vulnerable sector,†she said.
The bill, authored by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, also seeks to declare September 25 of every year as National Respect for Centenarians Day.
There are around 8,000 Filipino centenarians, based on the 2010 estimate of the National Statistics Office.
