John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Politicians should be elected based on their experience and knowledge of the law , not on their popularity by the people because of some movie or song.

Who will we expect to run for the office of President of the Philippines next time? Si Kris Aquino?

Simbako.

And your point is . . . because they are actors and actresses they are not qualified? Knowledge in law? The government is full of elected officials who are supposed to have knowledge of the law - lawyers kuno sila. But they are the very persons who brought us to this mess in the first place! A person who wants to help his/her community by running for public office should not be ridiculed because he/she is an actor or an actress - specially if he/she wins. Ronald Reagan was "only" a former B movie actor and he proved to be one of the better US presidents of the second half of the twentieth century. Ferdinand Marcos was a bar topnotcher and you know what he did to us.

i believe the point here is that in terms of preponderance, celebrities who win elections win not because they're qualified (it's a given for all takers as long as they're filipino citizens) but because they're charmed with name recall.  i don't think people vote for them because they believe they can do better.

as for politics and law, well, these can be studied and crammed, which celebs-turned-politicians can do very well despite their lack of academic background and discipline.  it is those years of a certain kind of lifestyle and attitude (like playing to the cameras) and having those pesky groupies around them that they carry over to their new jobs that become the bane.  besides, they tend to continue acting.  so we have elected officials who suddenly have movies during election time (holding 2 jobs?) and others who have tv appearances in cooking lessons or comedy shows.  acting has been brought even to the august senate halls lately, as you may know.

yes, the u.s. had ronald reagan the great communicator.  but we're not the u.s.  besides, reagan is the exception rather than the rule.  we can see that for every reagan there's a schwarzenegger and a sonny bono too.  and i doubt if the u.s. will ever consider brad pitt or tom cruise for president.  which brings me to the question of joseph estrada; do we really happen to miss him?

Ferdinand Marcos was a bar topnotcher and you know what he did to us.

My point is that there should be some kind educational training prior to running for office. A thorough knowledge of the processes of the law and the workings of government will allow a politician to work responsibly with the power he or she received by public mandate. The instances of minute examples of exceptions to that particular rule does not negate the fact that knowledge and specific training is necessary for the proper dispensation of duties.

If one is suffering from a dilated coronary aneurysm, one would seek help from a Cardiothoracic Surgeon who has expertise in vascular surgery, which requires a minimum of 5 years general surgery surgical training, an additional 3 years of cardiothoracic surgery fellowship and additional 2 year fellowship in a supraspecialization in vascular cardiothoracic surgery. A patient with a dilated coronary aneurysm will receive treatment / care from the surgeon who is trained in cardiothoracic surgery, not from a dentist , or a podiatrist. Or should the patient with a vascular pathology consult the expertise of a pedicab driver?

The same context applies for the election of officials. One should be trained in the knowledge of the law and in the specifics of political science. A thorough knowledge of it is the basis for a proper understanding in the dispensation of duties as a politician.

The same way as how Medical Doctors require an understanding of Biology & Life Sciences in order to understand the complex processes of Medicine and its subspecialties. All Medical Doctors should demonstrate a solid proficiency of Biology, Anatomy & Physiology prior to acceptance into Medical School and in the practice of Medicine. The same should hold true for Politicians and the thorough understanding of political science, government policies, constitutional law, etc.

To reiterate Isles' point, Joseph Estrada was a prime example of how actors shouldn't join politics.

Sincerely,
Dr. Lorenzo Lucino

It is erroneous to placate a blanket judgment that all attorneys are corrupt. There are a plethora of trial lawyers in this country who are not corrupt. Just as how there are some incorruptible judges in this country. One example is our very own Judge Gabriel Ingles, the Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals. He is a former trial attorney and a former Dean of College of Law at San Carlos University. There are many others like him throughout the Republic who are not corrupt or fall into that erroneous assumption that all lawyers are corrupt.

An example of how proper educational background in public policy and fiscal administration can help train a public servant was that of the late Secretary Jesse Robredo, who was the Director of the DILG [Department of Interior and Local Government]. Mr. Robredo, a community leader of Naga City and an effective administrator of the DILG, and was also the recipient of over 140 awards in good governance and the recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award of Government Service for his good governance. The late Mr. Robredo held a Master's degree in Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He also held a Master's in Business Administration from UP Dilliman.

This is an example of how educational training prepares a public servant for the analytical, operational, tactical, and strategic decisions one must be expected to make in regards to public policy. An understanding of governmental policies and the laws helps in the evasion of breaking the law.

PS. The late Mr. Robredo was an opponent of Jueteng policies. To the dismay of his uncle, former Gov Luis Robredo Villafuerte of Camarines Sur, who was a proponent of Jueteng policies.

You're right, Isles, actor-turned-politicians tend to star in movies while still in office. It's just plain preposterous because its a Conflict of Interest. An example would be Manny Pacquiao, who is currently a congressman , yet at the same time still boxes. It's a conflict of interest.

When Arnold was governor of California he was not allowed to act or star in movies while he assumed the position of Governor; it was a conflict of interest. After his tenure ended, then he joined the Hollywood bandwagon.

:P

??? well, he's an ex-seminarian from samar.  perhaps we can at least say that his educational background is somewhat superior, unlike a couple or so senators at the moment.

a neighbor of his whom i've met said that he had to go out of the seminary because priesthood just doesn't suit him.  the reason is obvious.  will he make a good senator?  we'll never know.  but i won't be surprised if he wins, that is, if any current political party would want him.  he won't get my vote, though.  we have enough showbiz people in politics to fill our days with regret.
