That Vice President Jojo Binay did not show up in the scheduled hearing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee was a foregone conclusion. He could not afford to subject himself and his office to the expected indignities from Senator Cayetano and Senator Trillanes. Both have shown their disdain of anyone who does not follow the script that they have written – as accusers, prosecutors, and judges.
Consider their treatment of Mayor Junjun Binay and of Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardee (Chief Justice Sereno was chairman of the board of judges) Antonio Tiu. Even the layout of the mayor’s house and the installation of an elevator were pounced on by the devilish duo, brushing aside what many Filipinos know of the lingering sickness of the mayor’s late wife. Filipino-Chinese businessman Tiu was incessantly badgered to open up his bank deposits and when the two were reminded of the threat of kidnapping, Senator Cayetano made light of it. This was an affront to those of us (not just Filipino-Chinese) subject to the dangers of kidnapping (which has been on the rise), burglaries, and theft, and to those who have already been victimized. Unlike the two, the Filipino people do not have security details (paid out of the people’s taxes) protecting them.
That the whole exercise is not “in aid of legislation†has become very clear to many of our countrymen. In the beginning they were, as I was, of the view that both would be objective and decent even if in the past, Senator Trillanes had subjected former Secretary and a PMA upperclassman Angelo Reyes to ridicule and extreme discourtesy while Senator Cayetano treated former Senate President Enrile badly. Regretfully for the Senate’s reputation, both have not measured to most of our expectation of how a senator should conduct himself.
Their actuations are convincing many that both are intent on besmirching the Vice President’s reputation with no regard for ferreting out the truth. The devilish duo have allowed witnesses to say anything, pouncing on sound bites that will be carried by a few supportive media and hopefully stay in the mind of the electorate up to May, 2016.
