Bohol Mediamen in political stardom

Constant exposure to media outlets was not a surefire guarantee of making it to public office.

This was found out by some members of the Bohol media who failed to make it in the last barangay elections although most of them were the hands down choice of the electorate.

Radio Station DYTR registered the most number of winning candidates starting with reelectionist Sen Guingguing who buried his opponent in convincing fashion.

For the second time, the anchor of Tingog sa Barangay over Station DYTR, clobbered Cristobal Talagsa as barangay captain of Montaña, Baclayon. A chosen candidate of former Baclayon mayor Benny Uy, Talagsa must have thought he had a Chinaman's chance of beating Rosendo Guingguing, his second degree cousin, in a return bout. In the 2002 barangay elections, Guingguing led by only two votes in a close fight against Talagsa. Their second encounter saw the challenger buried with a 102-vote margin.

In the same Montaña barangay elections, the wife of the Post publisher, Neria, pulled off a stunning upset against the star-studded line-up of Guingguing. She is the resident accountant of the Bohol Sunday Post.

Running as an independent, she broke away from the pack of 15 pretenders including five reelectionists to snatch the number one spot of elected barangay kagawads. Five of the incumbents candidates made it. They are Orencio Jumang-it, Eleuterio Banua, Marcos Israel, Simplicio Adovo and Cresente Valeroso.

The triumph of Guingguing posted a 100 percent batting average of DYTR talents. Another big winner was correspondent Boy Luzon who won as barangay captain of Cogon Norte in Loon.

Five other kagawad wannabes of the station also made it. They are Dondon Dulalas of Catarman, Dauis; Dodong Libatona of Baucan, Balilihan; Ronie Nueva of Mandaug, Calape; Andy Nalzaro of Bagumbayan, Loboc and Nelson Tayag of Taloto district, this city.

Another big winner in the last barangay elections was radioman Atoy Cosap of Station DYRD.

Fighting a formidable odd in the beginning, Atoy Cosap surprised everybody especially the camp of City Mayor Dan Lim when he showed awesome firepower towards the homestretch of the game. It was found out later that he was backed up by the machinery of Cong. Edgar Chatto to win the post of barangay captain of Dao district, this city. As the last ballot was counted, Cosap beat incumbent Flor Cornel by a comfortable margin of 153 votes.

Other Cosap colleagues at DYRD were not as lucky. The Torregosa brothers, Mark and Fanie both lost in their bids for barangay captain and, kagawad, respectively in in Mabini and Baclayon.

Top rated anchorman Batchoy Alba placed fourth in a seven-slot scramble. It was a dramatic improvement from his previous showing where he placed sixth in the second district elections for barangay kagawads.

Another DYRD loser was commentator Rey Blanco who lost in his bid for second district kagawad.

Very impressive in his propaganda material where he was pictured in "full broadcast regalia", Blanco failed to convince second district voters to try him banking on his vast radio talent.

Another humiliating defeat was that of Bohol Chronicle lensman Danny Reyes who came in a poor third in a three-way race for barangay captain in barangay Lourdes, Panglao.

DYRD technician Alex Igang also failed in his bid as Manga councilman.

A mediaman handling a government program, Gene Ugboc, was also not as lucky when he failed his ambition to become a barangay kagawad of Santa Cruz, Baclayon.
