For its “sin of diversion,†one of the country’s largest importers faces a P3.52-billion smuggling complaint filed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the justice department Thursday.
Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez said at a press briefing that Binondo-based Sonic Steel Industries had unlawfully imported and made claims of fictitious re-exportation of cold-rolled steel coils and prime cold-rolled steel coils with dutiable value worth P3.52 billion.
The amount covered the company’s various transactions last year which were declared as warehousing entries.
Alvarez said Sonic Industries ranked 56th among the country’s importers, bringing in a total of 94 million kilograms of imported steel last year.
Named respondents in the BOC complaint were Doris Ong, Sonic Industries executive vice president, and Bienvenido Dulce Jr., vice president for corporate affairs. - pdi
