With two basic commodities constantly rising--rice and gasoline--the gripes are resonating as well.

I thought Bohol is normally staid and unruffled by the scrambling for rice. But rice and gasoline are  increasingly becoming daily woes as well.

An announcer at DYRD suggested that we follow the lead of cooler Baguio, which is urging its residents to walk. I think this makes sense. By inculcating the habit of walking, we hit many birds with one stone--we promote health consciousness, ease the demand for fuel energy, and promote a greener Bohol.

Tagbilaran is not such a sprawling city. I believe half of people's daily destinations (school, market, workplace, government offices) are within walking distance from one's home.

In Japan, walking within a 2-kilometer radius is strictly implemented among schoolchildren, and those who live beyond are allowed to ride bicyles. Don't say this can be done only in a temperate climate, because summers in Japan can really scorch you.

The government should just assure the safety of the streets. As in Japan, PTAs should actively participate in street patrols in times when children go to school and come home, helping children cross the streets especially at busy intersections.

I'm seriously thinking of buying my kids bikes.

Some three years ago, when I joined my then 63-year old mother who was visiting Tagbilaran from the US, we walked the whole distance from Upper Mansasa to Marcela in Cogon in the early morning. From what I remember, I think it took us about 30 minutes of brisk walk, despite my mom's age.

Kung init sa adlaw ang problema, we can generate new business for umbrella makers.

Even back in Cagayan de Oro, Bene san, my friends always want to ride and I was the opposite.  From our office which was in front of Coca Cola to go to Limketkai, which was just close, my friends still would take a cab.  I walk and they said, "lahi ra jud ka, Grat!"  Walking is good for your health, maoy akong sige'g tubag.  When I was already in Manila, mas labaw maglakaw kay waiting for a cab take a long time.

I am not preaching the virtues of being a pedestrian from a pedestal. In Japan, I go around by bicyle most of the time. Walking one step at a time will get us far in terms of health, savings and energy conservation.

Hi Aya,

Usa pud siguro sa sikreto sa long life sa mga Hapon kaning ilang naandan nga maglakaw lang sa ilang paingnan, bisag tiguwang na. Mga babaye diri on average live up to 85, mga lalaki 79 years... Padayon lang suruy-suroy sa imong hacienda diha and you will live to see your great grandchildren... And besides, since in all likelihood you will live six years longer than your husband, eredera jud ka ani, pwede na mupalit ug baybayon sa Anda.

Unyang gabii mangutana ko kung kumusta ilang first day. So far, malipayon kaayo sila sa Tagbilaran, except for Paolo who still does not have a soccer team.

Genki man ka tan-awon, unsa man diay imong health concern?

Yes, I believe when it comes to hypertension, nature is as important as nurture. But when I started to jog and cycle, and shed 10 kg and decided to eat 80% fish and veggies, OK na akong panglawas... Presently, my weight just hovers around 70 kg bisag dili na kaayo ko regular mag jogging. Bisikleta man ang main mode of transpo naku, light and easy exercise...

That's really good, Bene san!  So, you didn't get into taking medication kadtong taas imong blood pressure?  My sister is only 42 but she was told by her doctor to maintain naman the meds.  I don't know though if she is religiously exercising which is really important kon naa kay ana na abnormality sa blood pressure.

I never took any medicines, as I am averse to them. Bisag ang akong pagniwang was very gradual, and when I finally achieved my target weight, I never swang back near my old weight, naa lang pirmi sa plus or minus 1 kg for the last 9 years. I once saw a Japanese TV program that recommended eating at least 1 kg of vegetables a day. I have been following this advice closely--kusog kaayo ko mukaon ug brocolli, lettuce, paprika, cucumber ug carrots. They go well with red wine as well.

Good for you, Bene san!  I need to reduce weight bya jud.  One time, I saw a promotion about slimming pills but before somebody reacts, I will never resort to taking slimming pills kay for one, delikado kaayo akong tiyan.  Anyway, I checked the website and I learned I didn't classify as overweight.  I was so disappointed because I thought I was so overweight.  For most of my life man gud I could hardly reach 100 pounds tapos karon 130 pounds na and sometimes mo saka pa jud kon sagunsun party!  whew!

I actually tried this in Tagbilaran once or twice. But if this will be one's chosen way of life, I think it needs determination.

Ang summer diri sa Japan init man kaayo, mas init pa sa Pilipinas, pero they never change their habit of walking to work. Kinahanglan jud i-develop nato ang habit. Since we are looking for a long-term solution to the energy crisis, OK lang siguro manimaho tag singot kaysa humot pero buslot ang bulsa.

The city government should also make the streets user-friendly to pedestrians by designating well-defined pedestrian and bicycle lanes and planting trees to serve as shade. Greener Tagbilaran will not only be more beautiful but also healthful.

Bitaw, Bene san!  Summer here in California is really hot.  We can even go over 110 degrees F but it wouldn't stop my husband from his daily walk of at least an hour.  He keeps on telling me life doesn't stop just because it's hot or cold.  Nah, ako kay motago man kong init not because mahadlok ko maitom but overwhelming ra kaayo ang kainit jud dire as in mamaak jud!

I am all for walking, Mr Benelynne. If everyone adopts this, everyone will smell pan-os, but will ultimately have better health, physically and financially. It's a good trade-off.

Malibog lagi si Lord kay sa una when I could hardly reach 100 pounds, gapa tambok jud ko kay I didn't want to be so skinny, karon na sobrahan na pod but I am not sweating.  I wish lang about 10 pounds lesser but I am good.  Exercise lang gamay.  I have been through having eating disorder bisan wala gituyo kay gipalabon ang trabaho and it was so nasty.

Hehehe!

Seriously, Ms Grace...what do you think are practical ways we can do to conserve? I've been thinking of things I could do. I recycle. I just bought a canvas bag for shopping. But that's about it.

In a recession time like now, Murage plants a lot and for the past months, I have been cooking vegetables from our garden.  Just like you, we also recycle but it could have been better not to use bottled waters.  Early in the morning when the air is still cold, we open our windows and our security door and close them by mid day when it's starting to get warm already.  We don't have to use our AC just yet.

Bisag UP, apil na pud sa energy conservation drive using bikes. Hala, kita pud diri sa Tagbilaran. Read this campaign forwarded by my friends from UP...

Padyak Movement (Bicycle Project) at the University of the Philippines

Dear UP Alumni and friends,

The UP Padyak Project was started by the UP Mountaineers members and alumni to give back to the University of the Philippines during its centennial celebration. The project is an environmental advocacy that promotes biking as a means of transportation, which helps reduce air pollution, lessen dependence on fossil fuels, and promotes a healthy lifestyle in the UP Diliman campus.

Since the summer of 2008, through funding support of several UPMountaineers, using the principle of padugo, bikes were purchased and provided to students. These bikes are reconditioned, one-speed, have a step-through frame, and are designed for utility and safety and not for speed. UP alumni from the College of Fine Arts helped in designing creative bike disks and scuptural bike racks that allow all bike commuters to park their bikes and enliven the campus through public art.

Since the first semester opened this June, the list of students requesting for more bikes is growing, and there are limits to the initial set of funds that we have internally generated. We seek your support and the support of UP Alumni in sustaining the Padyak Project. We would like to grow this project. Eventually, we want to go beyond the confines the campus. Cycling, in this era of permanent high oil prices, serious air pollution, and deteriorating public health, makes perfect sense.

A donation of P4000 can purchase one bike, a donation of P5000 can fabricate and install a bike rack. Any form of help will be appreciated, especially those that can assist in the maintenance of bikes and bike advocacy. Old bikes, spare parts, tools, etc. that you want to get rid of will also be of help.

We also appreciate your comments, advice, ideas, and words of encouragement.

For those who are interested in supporting the UP Padyak Project, please contact: padyakbikes@ gmail.com or visit http://www.padyak. org.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours,
The UP Mountaineers.

tips from inquirer...

Full tank at P30,000? Goodbye car, hello MRT for many middle-class families. I see a lot of them in the MRT, even now. You can sense which MRT commuters used to bring a car to work. Pretty soon, Josephine’s “impossible” may turn to “no other choice.”

I like the sneaky tricks to save on gas:

   1. Lighten up the trunk. More weight in your car trunk will make your car work harder, using up more gas.
   2. At the gas pump, don’t top off the tank. The excess gas may spill and will amount to waste. Just stop filling at the automatic level.
   3. When parking, choose a shady spot to prevent gas from evaporating under the heat.
   4. Fill up your tank in the morning or evening when the air is cooler. At midday, gas may expand due to the heat and you will end up getting a lesser amount of gas.

Nindot man gyud mag bisikleta aside nga maka sexy sa legs, mo nindot pa gyud ang butt. It's a matter of practice ra gyud.

   separate lane

   and traffic light
