Padyak Movement (Bicycle Project) at the University of the PhilippinesDear UP Alumni and friends,
The UP Padyak Project was started by the UP Mountaineers members and alumni to give back to the University of the Philippines during its centennial celebration. The project is an environmental advocacy that promotes biking as a means of transportation, which helps reduce air pollution, lessen dependence on fossil fuels, and promotes a healthy lifestyle in the UP Diliman campus.
Since the summer of 2008, through funding support of several UPMountaineers, using the principle of padugo, bikes were purchased and provided to students. These bikes are reconditioned, one-speed, have a step-through frame, and are designed for utility and safety and not for speed. UP alumni from the College of Fine Arts helped in designing creative bike disks and scuptural bike racks that allow all bike commuters to park their bikes and enliven the campus through public art.
Since the first semester opened this June, the list of students requesting for more bikes is growing, and there are limits to the initial set of funds that we have internally generated. We seek your support and the support of UP Alumni in sustaining the Padyak Project. We would like to grow this project. Eventually, we want to go beyond the confines the campus. Cycling, in this era of permanent high oil prices, serious air pollution, and deteriorating public health, makes perfect sense.
A donation of P4000 can purchase one bike, a donation of P5000 can fabricate and install a bike rack. Any form of help will be appreciated, especially those that can assist in the maintenance of bikes and bike advocacy. Old bikes, spare parts, tools, etc. that you want to get rid of will also be of help.
We also appreciate your comments, advice, ideas, and words of encouragement.

Thank you very much.
Sincerely yours,
The UP Mountaineers.
