MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino said Thursday he had splashed out on a luxury Porsche sportscar, sparking criticism in a country where a third of the population live on less than a dollar a day.

"It appeared to be out of character. He had campaigned against luxury cars and here he is buying a Porsche," Milo Tanchuling, secretary general of the activist group Freedom from Debt Coalition, told AFP.

"There is a danger that it will be viewed by many as a sign of extravagance and an unnecessary flaunting of wealth amid massive poverty."

Local press cited a recent Aquino order banning government units from buying luxury cars as service vehicles.

The 50-year-old bachelor said he sold his old BMW and took out a personal loan to buy the Porsche, which he said allowed him a relaxing drive amid his gargantuan responsibilities.

"I was happy with the deal because its mileage was less than 10,000 kilometers," Aquino said of the pre-owned vehicle, which local news reports said was a white entry-level model worth P4.5 million ($102,000).

Aquino's spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, defended his boss, saying the car's value had depreciated substantially compared with a brand-new Porsche.

"If it was not depreciated, the president wouldn't even buy it, wouldn't even consider it," Lacierda said.

Aquino won a landslide victory in the May election last year on an anti-corruption pledge of clean government and an end to wasteful spending that he said was the cause of widespread poverty.

i don't think there's something wrong with noynoy buying a car for himself. maybe we can let his critics do the audit about that purchase and see for themselves if noynoy indeed bought the car using his own money out of the proceeds from the sale of his BMW car. and aside from that he got it via financing so maybe we can ask what institution financed his loan for this car. as long as it's a bank and not DBM or Dept of Finance that's legal.

it is natural man sigoro na ang mga tao who cannot possess will envy those who have. instead of minding one's business, they defame, and say derogatory accusations against those who are able to afford.

God rewards those who work hard, who give generously, and if it means being able to enjoy some simple enjoyments in life, then so be it. For God blesses not only in graces, but also in fruitful bounty!

well said, vince. some local politicians use public funds to purchase 'transportation vehicles' when they are elected. it is understood of they purchase an isuzu, hyundai, mitsubishi, toyota, honda, ford etc. but a provincial governor using public funds to buy a Mercedes Benz S-500 (worth over $80,000)...then that's just absurd. However, if that said governor is going to use his own funds (private, not public, of course we're hoping he's not getting these funds via pork barreling) then that's one thing.

Aquino is using his own funds to purchase this vehicle. Not public. So what's the big deal? Ang rason kay naa'y ubang mga politka nga nag ibog. gusto sila mo palit pood pero dili ka afford kai they have "beer pockets yet have expensive wine tastes".

Ug dili ka maka afford, ajaw palit. Pero ug naa kay daghang kuwarta ug maka palit ka unsay gusto nimo, then palit! so long as it is in your budget.

as for the rest, ajaw na lang mo ma ibog. kai dili maayo. puydi mo tanaw, ajaw na lang pag yawyaw.

For me, theres something bland about a third-hand Porsche a president buys.
The thing is, in all modesty, Facebook developer and multi billionaire who slaves himself lives in a rented two storey house in CA. He only has a Honda Acura to ply the wides streets of America, regardless of his wealth.
For a president whose working day starts at 10 and ends at 6, he needs no fast car.
For need of a horsepower maybe, (he's definitely not working like a horse and his power slowly erodes daily) PNoy needs that Porsche, but hes got to buy the NLEX or the whole Carmona circuit for his playground to let him unleash the car's brute power.
Manila's traffic is outrageously damned, gas rates are murderous and a third hand Porsche may well be more than its published buying rate considering storage and shipping costs to the Philippines.
For every Filipino who gawk at the car as it zooms even without the "kwangkwang" preceding it is just another poor insult to the country's Filipinos. I mean, real Filipinos.

however, my friend, one has the right to enjoy the fruits of his work. one has the right to enjoy the blessings God pours on a person through hard work, passionate yearnings, and honest living.

one should not envy or take everything to heart. just because a person drives an expensive car does not mean that it was meant as an insult to one who is poor. dili pood maayo mo think ana.

i for one know of a person who gives and donates to christian / poor charities and also enjoys the fruits of his work.
he drives a mercedes GL series, is a general surgeon in the hospital that i used to do rounds in. but every year, this man
goes back to the philippines and leads free medical missions. because this man gives openly to those who are in need,
because of his hard work (studying over 12 years to earn his M.D, and then specializing) he is able to afford that car,
his house, his lifestyle (Through God's Grace and Blessings). He sacrificed to study, he sacrificed to earn his MD.
And yet, he selflessly gives back to those who normally could not afford his service. Freely. Openly.
God Blesses him abundantly in return for this selfless act.

you enjoy the fruits of your bounty that God gives you. if others envy you for it, that is their own thinking that is misleaded.
not everything should be construed as an insult to the poor. It is God who pours blessings on a person through one's
honest, hard, work. If a man tithes 10% to the church and in return of his faith, is blessed abundantly by God,
should the poor also envy that man's rich bounty? no. of course not. envying , in itself, is a sin.

i work with a friend who drives a Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo. It's worth is $95k+.
I asked him what motivated him to buy a Porsche. Apparently when he was
younger, he had a friend whose father drove an 1980's carrera. vintage beauty.
when he was finished with medical school and was working,
was able to afford his own 911 carrera.

sometimes, seeing expensive cars motivates people. it shouldn't bee seen as a negative.

pettiness is such an ugliness. jealousy, especially, is more disgusting than the taste of coffee without sugar and cream.

the issue is not modesty, the issue is capitalism and freedom to do what you please with what you have. him being the president should not limit him to what he can buy merely because some poor individual cannot afford such a car, in this case, a porsche. the modesty aspect is all relative and depends on the person. as for his family owning hacienda luisita, that is a family business and the workers are employed under them. as the owner of an agraricultural machine, one is entitled to the products, the output, and the revenue , of course after paying the hired hand.

what he does with his money is up to him. and as the president of the republic of the philippines, am sure he is entitled to some pleasurable pursuits , given the stresses of the office he occupies.

there are some presidents who steal billions of dollars (such as marcos, sukarno, franco etc), there are some presidents who are womanizers and adulterers (berlusconi, clinton) etc.

pardon my interjection in the view that president aquino hasn't violated any laws in purchasing a slightly used porsche.
a simple capitalism is now seen as 'unmodest'. again, what's with the judgment?

if the man has the money to purchase an automobile, let him. its a slightly used porsche (~60k usd).

president aquino is again criticized for using the luxurious Lexus LX-570 white sedan. palace officials said that the bulletproof car is leased by one of the pnoy's bro in law. why in the hell they keep criticizing pnoy's choice of vehicles? is it because noynoy seem to show the people that he's a simple individual then wanted him to ride a taxi on his official engagements and functions?

what happen to us pinoys? instead of being a critic to him why not help him instead? we can help this country in our own little way without expecting much in return.

Bai Ray, it is the crab mentality that is so rampant in Philippine Society.

It's hard to get up in the Philippines or be proud of your success and the fruit of one's work because there will be others who will always be wanting. Then there is the green eye of envy.

If you are a president, you deserve a presidential automobile. Unsa diay gusto nila mo drive ang Presidente of the Republic with a Hyundai Accent (a slightly used one)? lol.

The Prime Minister of Japan is driven in a Rolls Royce. Seeing the consensus of the envious few, they would rather have our president drive a jeepney.

Not just by buying one, but by borrowing one. He was in the headlines last night for driving a lexus whom he says is the car of one of his brother-in-law. Nanghuwam na lamang sija kay gubaon ang mercedes nga presidential car.

In addition, giatake pud ni si PNoy karon for staying too low from commenting in the current unrest in Egypt. NGa sa uban pang analysis dire, very much like the EDSA PEople Power. Maybe daw he is hesitant kay si Hosni Mobarak kay ally man sa US.
