Thoughts of an old history professor

As i passed by your office by carr hall
i could not help but see books piled up high
your grey hair and your slight musky scent .

As i pass you by the hallway, you smile and wave
and eager to accept my questions, my query, my remarks
awaiting my presence, you pull a chair for me to sit
as you sip your coffee mug a bit a bit.

You talk of Robespierre, Marat, Dauphin, Louis
men of old France, of revolution and fallen royalty
you speak of words that transcend the physical to the metaphyiscal
you call on metaphors, similes, versimilitude
you inquire of equality, egalitarianism, fraternity, liberty
and enjoy retorts, objections, while explaining  your view in such suave style.

I smile.
