Get Drunk by Charles Baudelaire
« on: May 25, 2011, 05:44:20 PM »
One should always be drunk. That's all that matters;
that's our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time's
horrible burden one which breaks your shoulders and bows
you down, you must get drunk without cease.

But with what?
With wine, poetry, or virtue
as you choose.
But get drunk.

And if, at some time, on steps of a palace,
in the green grass of a ditch,
in the bleak solitude of your room,
you are waking and the drunkenness has already abated,
ask the wind, the wave, the stars, the clock,
all that which flees,
all that which groans,
all that which rolls,
all that which sings,
all that which speaks,
ask them, what time it is;
and the wind, the wave, the stars, the birds, and the clock,
they will all reply:

"It is time to get drunk!

So that you may not be the martyred slaves of Time,
get drunk, get drunk,
and never pause for rest!
With wine, poetry, or virtue,
as you choose!"

You have to be always drunk. That's all there is to it—it's the only way. So as not to feel the horrible burden of time that breaks your back and bends you to the earth, you have to be continually drunk.

But on what? Wine, poetry or virtue, as you wish. But be drunk.

And if sometimes, on the steps of a palace or the green grass of a ditch, in the mournful solitude of your room, you wake again, drunkenness already diminishing or gone, ask the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock, everything that is flying, everything that is groaning, everything that is rolling, everything that is singing, everything that is speaking. . .ask what time it is and wind, wave, star, bird, clock will answer you: "It is time to be drunk! So as not to be the martyred slaves of time, be drunk, be continually drunk! On wine, on poetry or on virtue as you wish." (translated by Louis Simpson) -- http://www.poets.org/

One should always be drunk. That's the one thing that matters.
In order not to feel the horrible burden of Time, which breaks
your shoulders and crushes you to the ground, one should be
drunk without ceasing.
But on what? On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, as suits you.
But get drunk.
And sometimes, on the steps of a palace, on the green grass
of a ditch, in the lonely gloom of your room, you wake up, the
drunkenness already abated or completely gone, ask the wind the
wave, the star, the bird, the clock, everything that flies or groans
or rolls or sings or speaks, ask everything what time it is; and the
wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock will answer: 'Time
to get drunk. In order not to be martyred slaves of Time, get
drunk. Get drunk ceaselessly. On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, as
suits you.' -- http://yolksoc.blogspot.com/

lain-lain nga translations man diay ni.  ibutang pod bi ang french nga original.  mas makasabot pa mi ni bai bugs tingali, hehe.

mas ganahan ko sa "one should always be drunk" kay sa "you have to be always drunk".  maayo man god ning pahalang gamay kay sa nawngon ta.

of course, the poetic form (the first entry) is the best (for me).

He he, I didn't want to post something I can't properly check (my French is lousy). Anyhow, here it is (URL provided in case you or Bay Bugs spots a typo or what)...  :)

Although on the whole I prefer Simpson's version, there are lines from the other translations that I like better. But these are minor points. What really matters is that one should always be drunk. (Hic!)

Welcome to Tubag Bohol, Mr. Pater.

You mean the kind of drunkenness referred to by Baudelaire? Or drunkenness with ethyl alcohol alone?
