Ave atque vale
« on: June 26, 2013, 06:32:45 PM »
by Catullus
translated by A. S. Kline

Carried over many seas, and through many nations,
brother, I come to these sad funeral rites,
to grant you the last gifts to the dead,
and speak in vain to your mute ashes.
Seeing that fate has stolen from me your very self.
Ah alas, my brother, taken shamefully from me,
yet, by the ancient custom of our parents,
receive these sad gifts, offerings to the dead,
soaked deeply with a brother’s tears,
and for eternity, brother: ‘Hail and Farewell!’

By ways remote and distant waters sped,
Brother, to thy sad grave-side am I come,
That I may give the last gifts to the dead,
And vainly parley with thine ashes dumb:
Since she who now bestows and now denies
Hath taken thee, hapless brother, from mine eyes.
But lo! these gifts, the heirlooms of past years,
Are made sad things to grace thy coffin shell,
Take them, all drenchèd with a brother's tears,
And, brother, for all time, hail and farewell!

Through many nations and many seas have I come
To carry out these wretched funeral rites, brother,
That at last I may give you this final gift in death
And that I might speak in vain to silent ashes.
Since fortune has borne you, yourself, away from me.
Oh, poor brother, snatched unfairly away from me,
Now, though, even these, which from antiquity and in the custom of our
parents, have been handed down, a gift of sadness in the rites, accept
them, flowing with many brotherly tears, And for eternity, my brother,
hail and farewell.

Driven through many a nation, out over many an ocean,
I am now here for these last rites of passing,
To offer you, dead brother, the last gifts of the living,
To speak in vain at your unspeaking ash
Since bitter fortune barred me, stole you to a shadow,
Poor brother taken, cruelly taken, from me.
But now to celebrate grief in custom of our fathers
I bring small foods to you who starve below,
Small gifts damp with a brother's tears. Take them and this
Into eternity: hail and farewell.

Through many nations and over many seas having been
driven I come, poor brother, to (these) offerings,
that I might give (them) at last for the service of the dead
and I, in vain address ashes, unable to speak.
Since fortune has carried away your own self,
Alas, poor brother undeservingly taken away from me,
now however, not withstanding these things, by the ancient
custom of (our) parents
(these) offerings are handed over with sad service
Take them with much wetness from fraternal weeping
and for ever, brother, farewell and farewell.

the original latin:

Ave atque vale

Gaius Valerius Catullus

Multas per gentes et multa per aequora vectus
Avdenio has miseras, frater, ad inferias
Ut te postremo donarem munere mortis
Et mutam nequiquam alloquerer cinerem.
Quandoquidem fortuna mihi tete abstulit ipsum,
Heu miser indigne frater adempte mihi,
Nunc tamen interea haec, prisco quae more parentum
Tradita sunt tristi munere ad inferias,
Accipe fraterno multum manantia fletu,
Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.

Gaius Valerius Catullus (ca. 84–54 BC) was a Latin poet of the Roman Republic (509–27 BC). His surviving works are still read widely, and continue to influence poetry and other forms of art. (wikipedia)
