Amazing jud that we have well respected Filipino doctors and nurses here in America.  Just last week, I was watching a documentary of CNN about health and medical needs of US presidents.  Naturally, the White House doctors were interviewed.  I didn't realize until then that everywhere the president go or even just inside his office, a team of medical professionals is just a few steps away.  One of the doctors interviewed was a lady, Connie Mariano.  I could tell she was a Filipino but just to make sure, I googled her name.  Indeed, she is a Fil-Am!  She was the Director of the White House Medical Unit attending to the health of then President Bill Clinton.  I was so amazed and proud of her achievements!

grabeh bitaw oi gipakita man tong blue print sa white house unya ang proximity sa medical terms.  Grabeh jud diay diha nko na realize how important their jobs are sa mga presidents.  The health of the president can break a nation judging from previous presidents who got ill or assasinated.  Of couse, there were also medical cover up.  And there was a question thrown if President Regan already had Alzheimer while he was still the president and one doctor said he already had early symptoms.

That says something doesn't it 'te? When even the White House Executive recruits a Filipino Doctor into the service for the care of the President of the United States of America.

One word describes the Filipino doctors that I've come to meet and know: Resiliency.

One inherent characteristic of a Filipino pod Dong is that we put our heart and soul in what we are doing.  It's not just a job where we expect to get paid at the end of the month but it's a commitment.  Mao siguro the life of a US President was entrusted to a Fil-Am doctor. But we don't have to look far.  I can see in you a doctor that, if I am a president  (:o), I would entrust not just my life but my whole family!

Humble man gud ang most Filipinos. Most of the doctors that I've rotated around with 'te, such as Dr. Villanueva, who is a cardiothoracic surgeon, does not boast of his accomplishments. He sounds so very everyday like, approachable kaayo siya. Very warm jud, so much that any person that meets him that didn't know of his professional background wouldn't know that he was rated one of the most pivotal Surgeons in Southern New Jersey by Virtua West Jersey Hospital Systems and Atlantic Medical Systems. The man has trained, literally, thousands of medical students and now practicing surgeons who use his techniques.

Which he learned from Philippine Medical School; University of the East-College of Medicine. Ma believe man jud ko sa ang training the doctors get in Philippine Medical Schools. That is why there are hundreds of American students who go to medical school in the Philippines every year. Quality and Reputability.

You are totally right about the character of the Filipino, Ate Ging. Hard work and professional commitment. The two are synonymous with the Filipino. IMHO.

I agree both of you, Dong and Maring!  Here's this care home that I visit from time to time.  I met Pinoy nurses and there's one worker who is a volunteer.  I asked her why she is working kay medyo she is old na jud.  She said, she is living alone after her husband died.  Her husband whom she cared for because he refused to go to a care home kay naa na bitaw stigma sa mga care homes that are not so nice.  So after her husband died, she volunteered and cared for older people and spend time to talk to them.  And she is a Filipino!  Very touching!  That reminds me, it's my turn to give back.  This week, I will go there with Alyssamarie and we can bring them snacks.

Macks, you are right.  She's not just a Chef but the Executive Chef of the White House.  The first woman, the first Filipina and minority Executive Chef. Her name is Cristeta Comerford.

Some of my callers, when they find out that Im from the Philippines, they're like.. oh? my doctor is a Filipino :)
It makes me smile :) :)

hahaha. I would have beamed with pride in hearing that.

Side story, one time my mom was driving fast to her hospital and she was stopped by the NJ State Police, they saw her in her uniform. Asked here where she was going, and my mom replied telling them that she was an I.C.U nurse and was going to work. The police let her go immediately. Turned out that that officer was taken to the ICU some years back after a shooting.

Saved. And it was by a Filipina nurse as well.

Filipinos DOMINATE the nursing field here in the United States. Every hospital in the United States, you will see Filipinos in the ER, ICU, OR, Tele, Med Surg etc. Especially in major hospital systems such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, University of Pennsylvania Hospital, New York University Hospital Systems etc.

Filipino Doctors go into Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Surgery. So this is why alot of Americans know Filipino doctors because of the 'generalized' fields they go into. Pinoy Family Practice physicians care for American citizens ranging from ages 1 till 90s even in the 100s of  years old. The generalization patients have on Filipino doctors are:

1) Very approachable
2) Very intelligent
3) Clear vocals; easily understood
4) Confident
5) Compassionate and very 'personal'

The face of a prestigious Filipino-American Surgeon.

Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Dioscoro Villanueva, M.D
Dr. Dioscor Villanueva is a board certified in general, cardiac and thoracic surgery. He graduated from Far Eastern University in the Philippines. He completed an internship at United Hospital, Newark and surgical residencies at Lakewood City Hospital, Ohio; Memorial Hospital of Burlington County; and, Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center. The other Filipino next to him is Dr. DeLeon, a board certified Colo-Rectal Surgeon.

Both of these Filipino-American Surgeons are Visayan. :)

lors expound please ont his part..:)

I think it is the medical training Filipino doctors get in the medical school in Philippines. They focus on patient interaction, specifically schools such as The University of the East, University of the Philippines, Santo Tomas University, Far Eastern University, Cebu Doctor's University.

The Filipino doctors that I've shadowed in the past including Neuro-surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, gastroenterologists, nephrologists, family practioners, General Internists, and Podiatrists were very well versed in their specific fields. Patients reacted to them with humility, and respect.

Physicians and Surgeons can tend to be obnoxious at times in how they deal with patients; probably due to their stressed hours, and busy schedules. I've witnessed this personally when I've rotated with American physicians. Their patient interaction is very cold--there is almost a wall that separates the physician and the patient. You can tell that the patient is listening and has some kind of fear of the physician or hesitance to talk back.

However when I rotated with Pinoy doctors, they were very caring towards the patient and very approachable. Instead of the patient reaching out, it was they, the physician-surgeon that reached out. Asking about family history, interests, etc. They start a very warm conversation to open the patient--then from there go into patient history, medical history. When I talked to Dr. Villanueva about this and why he did it, he said he does it because if you open the patient up, the more cooperative they are to you--and will be more likely to trust you. Very strategic kaayo.

Sure there have been some Filipino doctors that were very serious, pero they have to be given their work condition and their manner of work. Filipino Surgeons are extremely strict and almost unapproachable, but their record in successful surgical procedures are impressive.

I seriously think that the way Philippine Medical Schools teach medicine is superior to American methodology.

Totally biased and has no basis at all. If the Filipino Doctor was as impudent as she claims in that T.V show, then the United States wouldn't be importing Filipino Doctors.

Suffice to say, there are over 20,000 Filipino Physicians in the United States. I think this fact bears witness to the high quality of our Doctors.

The T.V show 'Desperate House Wives' has been already cancelled due to lack of funding. Filipino doctors are still and continue to care and treat American patients to this day. And thousands of us Filipino-Americans are in medical school to continue the legacy of our Filipino compatriots.

You know what made me smile? In the interview I had with one medical admission director he asked me if I was a Filipino. I answered, 'Yes', and he warmly commented, "Filipinos and Indians constitute a considerable amount of students in American Medical Schools."

Racist comments like that of Ms. Hatcher is a testament to the kinds of derogatory comments we still have to go through. But I view people like her as mere pebbles. One simply just needs to walk over pebbles. Or shove them aside. :)

That comment of Teri Hatcher was a result of her being idiotic - or the scriptwriter's ignorance.

Speaking of Filipino Doctor, my Uncle, my Mom's younger brother who lives in a remote place in Oroquita is being cared by a 96-year old doctor.  I don't know if that is good but up to now, my Uncle's blood pressure hasn't gone down yet.  We are urging my Uncle's wife to have him transferred to the provincial hospital and when he is well enough to travel, he can go to Bohol and he will be cared by our doctor, Dr. Omo.

A 96-year old doctor, still attending to his patients.  It may be time already for him to give up his work and he may not be as effective anymore as he wants to be but I can hear the passion and dedication there when they talk about this old doctor.

Poor thing!  He must be so in love with his profession that it's too much for him to give up.  I hope our government - health servives should look into this if this doctor is still fit enough to care for patients.  In my uncle's case, he is there because it's cheaper than going to provincial hospital.  We already generated a little fund for him to go to provincial hospital so he can be cared better.

I bet he wouldn't hesitate to spend money for his health but he is one of the poorest of the poor.  He is a fisherman, a carpenter, everything but just hardly enough.  Their daughter finished college and now a teacher but only paid a thousand per month in their local school.  Medicines are always taken for granted in favor of food.  But anyway, he is gonna be fine.  We are used already to being poor so it's no news.  We, as a family are trying to help him the best way we can so he will be better.  I just hope he is well enough to go to Bohol so Dr. Omo can take care of him.

i suspect that the scriptwriter has some axe to grind to a certain filipino doctor that's why the script was made.

They're merely trying to make a big deal about how there are too many Filipino Doctors in the United States. As indignant it is to believe, but there are some patients that complain about being treated by Filipino physicians. Or are prejudiced at first; they believe that non-white physicians are incapable.

It is a basis of ignorance in their part; a side effect of being uneducated.

They do not know that the Filipino doctors that are in the United States are of the best of the best. Prestigious graduates of schools such as University of the Philippines, University of the East, Cebu Doctor's, Santo Tomas and the rest.

Fortunately we are proving their original prejudices incorrect everyday a life is saved by a Filipino.

The same kind of treatment has been given to Indian physicians also.

Its part of the job. Thick skin is really part of the job description. If you're handling with stress on a daily basis, one needs to learn to ignore it. Its just how it is. We have to think about the bigger picture.

This is what I'm talking about.

Philippine Medical Schools totally engross their medical students in even the nursing aspect of the profession. This medical student who is an OB/GYN (Obstetrics and Gynecology) rotationary intern deals with the birth of a child. There is no one assisting her, just the physician and the patient.

This kind of 'total' experience is what makes the Filipino Doctor 'Highly Qualified' in the United States.

Pinay Doctors are also very very very beautiful.  ;) 8)

i think that's what they called PGI or post graduate intern. i dunno if they are allowed to perform such delicate procedure without assistance of a licensed one.

1st year interns are allowed to write prescription or make proper procedures without chief resident or the resident director being there; its part of the learning experience. However, afterwards, the chief resident or the attending physician will review with the intern and 3rd or 4th year medical student if the prognosis and diagnosis was correct, incorrect, what could have been done differently etc.

I work with 1st year interns in the local Pulmonology Clinic, as I'm a summer medical extern. I rotate and shadow and observe their prognosis; and most of the time, they write their prescriptions, do bronchial cleaning with or without the presence of  the attending GI or Pulmonologist.

It really depends on the head chief resident or the resident director; sometimes you have one who is quite controlling and wants to observe the intern's care constantly; sometimes you have a CR or an attending who is very laxed about things. The purpose of PGY 1, 2 is to learn and affix one's clinical skills so that one is ready for the USMLE 3. The USMLE 3 is the national boards that every 1st year resident intern takes several months into his or her residency. If you pass it, you are allowed to take the national licensing exams after your residency.

Many residencies require and mandate their residents and interns to have independent practice. Thus enabling them to master their clinical skills. And pass the USMLE 3 boards.

There is what they call an HR, an honor code, a special trust a director has with his interns.

Dong, a summa cum laude is no average student.  You excel in your field because you are driven by your passion to serve the people someday, not to mention your love and respect for your parents and your relatives whom you shared vision wth.  And of course, your strong faith in God.  That, I think really leads you to the right path.  Keep it up, Dong!

Yeah, that 96-year old doctor is pretty amazing!  He has three nurses to assist him in his job but I really can't help but doubt if he is still "up to code".

Dong, my Uncle's bp as of yesterday's text by my aunt was 240/120.  That's so high, isn't it? Right now, the plan is for my Uncle's wife to accompany my Uncle to travel to Bohol on Sunday.  They live, by the way, in Oroquita, a remote place in the Northwestern Mindanao. My Mom and her brothers inherited their mother being hypertensive.  Mano Omay, that's my Uncle, is the younger brother of our late Manoy Pael and my Mom.  He must be 55.

'te yes very high kaayo na. Bata pa man imung Tito, 'te. Ingna na siya not to eat to much pinirito, i-pa limit na iyang oily food intake, 'te. Kai high saturated fat foods like adobo, humba, or excessive salty foods like ginamos are leading causes of hypertension--which is complementary to high blood pressure.

Your Tito needs to ask his physician to give him some beta blockers, anti hypertensives, vasodilators and even some angiotensin II receptor blockers, which are popular treatments here in the 'states.

Your Tito needs to reduce his intake of excessive fluids, 'te. He should take some dieretics to rid the body of excessive fluids and excess salt content, which is causative of high blood pressure.

Your Tito's doctor will know what kinds of medications available for him to combat his hbp, the responsiblity lang relies on your Tito's cooperation in changing his eating habits, his lifestyle in the bigger picture.

My warm regards,

Thanks a lot, Doc Dong!  I will talk to him when he gets to Bohol.  I am glad they are going to Bohol today because there's a very good doctor there who has been caring for my Mom and other relatives.

I will have my sister Terter, our youngest who just graduated from HNU Nursing school to take note of your suggestions so that when they see Dr. Omo next week, she can discuss this with him.

I totally agree with you that they should cut down on those fatty foods.  I will also talk to my Mom all these things you are telling me.  Gahi pod ug ulo ang mga oldies nato, Dong!  :(

Mao lagi, 'te, the enemy and/or friend of a person's health is our own selves, jud. Kaning Pilipino food lami kaayo kai tam-is pero high kaayo na ug fat content ug carbohydrates. Kaning carbohydrates (luto, puto, pancit, etc) has a high absorbancy in liquid, which means an increased water or liquid content in the body's system. Ang result ani ---is leading to high blood pressure. Specially jud if one eats too much asin-based foods. Salt, (Sodium Chloride--NaCl) has a negative bond charge due to the Chloride content--which will attract any positively charged atom--and the most common positively charged elemental atom is Hydrogen. Hydrogen is also found in Water---H20. Ang result ani, is that if one eats too much salty food--by natural law--ang salt content will retain and absorb water. Therefore instead of the water content being flushed out of the body--dili ma flushed out kai gi retained man due to HIGH salt content in the system.

Excessive salt content, therefore, will lead to high blood pressure. A result pood ani mai mo manifest ug hypertension. And in the long run pood--DIABETES will manifest. Any high sugar intake will also lead to the manifestation of diabetes.

Ingna lang imung Tito, to keep things in moderation. Okey ra pood mo ka un ug asin, ginamos, pinirito, baboy, etc--pero as long as it is in moderation. Mao jud na ang importante.

Sige, 'te, my regards to your Tito!

Bran,

Thanks for your health tips.

I also believe in "Moderation" and "Variety". It does'nt matter if you take everything, but in small portion. Look at the Japanese diet, on a small table, you will find more than 10 kinds of food like, beef, fish, vegetables, seaweeds, horse, shellfish, octopus, you name it and all are in coin sizes. After a great meal, they drink rice wine and puff a cigar.

But look, they have longitivity and the highest life expectancy.

Bem, have you ever had ginamos-styl oysters? I forget the Filipino term for it, but it is something that my dad loves. He mixes it with suka and sili and he eats it with rice. He inherited my Mama Luz's love of salty foods.

Bem, your Lola must be a great cook eh? Haha I can only imagine.

It may be a kind of ginamos, Dong!  We have that in Bohol and we call that amahong - the one that are clams.  I just can't remember how we call ours the one made out of small oysters.  It's placed and sold in lapad - the empty bottle of rum.

I miss my pinoy doctors. Plural gyud? Hehehe!

Btaw oi, pinoy doctors are great. But then there are other doctors who are just as great. What sets pinoy docs apart is, naturally caring gyud sila. Very nurturing. You feel like they really care about you, not just as a patient but as a person. And they have the best smiles!

Exactly, Thyl!  Having this kind of attitude is something you don't learn from med school.  It comes from within, from being a Filipino.

Do you know Dr. Mercado from CDO, Ms Graz? Mao gyud to siya akong favorite doctor, mura to siya ug akong grandpa. Buotan kaayo to siya. I was a bit of a hypochondriac in high school, I would go to the hosp to see him probably every week! Mailhan gyud to siya nga murag napul-an na nga cge ko'g balik balik bisan he told me a million times that there was nothing wrong with me, but he was so nice about it. I guess he realized that it was my head nga naay deperensya. Hahaha

Diha pod chada kaayo na doctor sa Cagayan kauban sa akong auntie sa Rotary.  I brought my sister from Bohol who had severe ear infection para mapa check up sa CDO kay aron dili pod ko ka absent from work ba.  The doctor was super nice unya wa bya mi bayad - indigent mi adto plus friend sya ni auntie.  He was so gentle and he kept on apologizing my sister for the discomfort and pain but di matabang ang ka gentle kay wa jud ko ka harong ga tan aw pagkuha na nya'g sample or biopsy.  My sister was so brave jud!  Ning tulo lang iyang luha ako pa adto, nah ning lagpot na ang kamot sa doctor.

I also like Dr. Rodriguez (Maria Reyna Hosp) kay buotan pero kusog mangasaba. Hahaha.

My mom loves Dr. Canseco, the pediactric doctor. Maayo kaayo to siya, he was a great, great doctor and a very nice person. When he died, daghan kaayo ning adto sa iyang lubong, mga natabangan niyang mga indigents.

Ate Ethylene,

I remember the incident when you had to deal with an arrogant pharmacy intern. Because today I had to deal with a very very arrogant GI resident. Ah, its so very belittling, but I guess the experience builds character.

The only solace my fellow interns and I could do was joke around after he left. He had a 'thing' for flaunting his white coat. As if it was a cape. The nurses even laughed at our imitation.

Don't worry about him, Dong. It is obvious na S siya nimo coz you are the better man. Bahin pud atong akong gikalagutan sa una, I was wrong to even refer to his race. We have an Indian intern right now who's very smart and very nice. I really like him.

Dong, because you are an extraordinarily gifted person, daghan gyud masuya nimo. People will try to bring you down. Don't let them. If anyone bothers you, your ate Graz and I will kick their butts. Hehehe. We are closet superheroes, with undisclosed superpowers. LOL
