Amazing jud that we have well respected Filipino doctors and nurses here in America.  Just last week, I was watching a documentary of CNN about health and medical needs of US presidents.  Naturally, the White House doctors were interviewed.  I didn't realize until then that everywhere the president go or even just inside his office, a team of medical professionals is just a few steps away.  One of the doctors interviewed was a lady, Connie Mariano.  I could tell she was a Filipino but just to make sure, I googled her name.  Indeed, she is a Fil-Am!  She was the Director of the White House Medical Unit attending to the health of then President Bill Clinton.  I was so amazed and proud of her achievements!

grabeh bitaw oi gipakita man tong blue print sa white house unya ang proximity sa medical terms.  Grabeh jud diay diha nko na realize how important their jobs are sa mga presidents.  The health of the president can break a nation judging from previous presidents who got ill or assasinated.  Of couse, there were also medical cover up.  And there was a question thrown if President Regan already had Alzheimer while he was still the president and one doctor said he already had early symptoms.

That says something doesn't it 'te? When even the White House Executive recruits a Filipino Doctor into the service for the care of the President of the United States of America.

One word describes the Filipino doctors that I've come to meet and know: Resiliency.

One inherent characteristic of a Filipino pod Dong is that we put our heart and soul in what we are doing.  It's not just a job where we expect to get paid at the end of the month but it's a commitment.  Mao siguro the life of a US President was entrusted to a Fil-Am doctor. But we don't have to look far.  I can see in you a doctor that, if I am a president  (:o), I would entrust not just my life but my whole family!

Humble man gud ang most Filipinos. Most of the doctors that I've rotated around with 'te, such as Dr. Villanueva, who is a cardiothoracic surgeon, does not boast of his accomplishments. He sounds so very everyday like, approachable kaayo siya. Very warm jud, so much that any person that meets him that didn't know of his professional background wouldn't know that he was rated one of the most pivotal Surgeons in Southern New Jersey by Virtua West Jersey Hospital Systems and Atlantic Medical Systems. The man has trained, literally, thousands of medical students and now practicing surgeons who use his techniques.

Which he learned from Philippine Medical School; University of the East-College of Medicine. Ma believe man jud ko sa ang training the doctors get in Philippine Medical Schools. That is why there are hundreds of American students who go to medical school in the Philippines every year. Quality and Reputability.

You are totally right about the character of the Filipino, Ate Ging. Hard work and professional commitment. The two are synonymous with the Filipino. IMHO.

I agree both of you, Dong and Maring!  Here's this care home that I visit from time to time.  I met Pinoy nurses and there's one worker who is a volunteer.  I asked her why she is working kay medyo she is old na jud.  She said, she is living alone after her husband died.  Her husband whom she cared for because he refused to go to a care home kay naa na bitaw stigma sa mga care homes that are not so nice.  So after her husband died, she volunteered and cared for older people and spend time to talk to them.  And she is a Filipino!  Very touching!  That reminds me, it's my turn to give back.  This week, I will go there with Alyssamarie and we can bring them snacks.

Macks, you are right.  She's not just a Chef but the Executive Chef of the White House.  The first woman, the first Filipina and minority Executive Chef. Her name is Cristeta Comerford.

Some of my callers, when they find out that Im from the Philippines, they're like.. oh? my doctor is a Filipino :)
It makes me smile :) :)

hahaha. I would have beamed with pride in hearing that.

Side story, one time my mom was driving fast to her hospital and she was stopped by the NJ State Police, they saw her in her uniform. Asked here where she was going, and my mom replied telling them that she was an I.C.U nurse and was going to work. The police let her go immediately. Turned out that that officer was taken to the ICU some years back after a shooting.

Saved. And it was by a Filipina nurse as well.

Filipinos DOMINATE the nursing field here in the United States. Every hospital in the United States, you will see Filipinos in the ER, ICU, OR, Tele, Med Surg etc. Especially in major hospital systems such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, University of Pennsylvania Hospital, New York University Hospital Systems etc.

Filipino Doctors go into Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Surgery. So this is why alot of Americans know Filipino doctors because of the 'generalized' fields they go into. Pinoy Family Practice physicians care for American citizens ranging from ages 1 till 90s even in the 100s of  years old. The generalization patients have on Filipino doctors are:

1) Very approachable
2) Very intelligent
3) Clear vocals; easily understood
4) Confident
5) Compassionate and very 'personal'

lors expound please ont his part..:)

I think it is the medical training Filipino doctors get in the medical school in Philippines. They focus on patient interaction, specifically schools such as The University of the East, University of the Philippines, Santo Tomas University, Far Eastern University, Cebu Doctor's University.

The Filipino doctors that I've shadowed in the past including Neuro-surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, gastroenterologists, nephrologists, family practioners, General Internists, and Podiatrists were very well versed in their specific fields. Patients reacted to them with humility, and respect.

Physicians and Surgeons can tend to be obnoxious at times in how they deal with patients; probably due to their stressed hours, and busy schedules. I've witnessed this personally when I've rotated with American physicians. Their patient interaction is very cold--there is almost a wall that separates the physician and the patient. You can tell that the patient is listening and has some kind of fear of the physician or hesitance to talk back.

However when I rotated with Pinoy doctors, they were very caring towards the patient and very approachable. Instead of the patient reaching out, it was they, the physician-surgeon that reached out. Asking about family history, interests, etc. They start a very warm conversation to open the patient--then from there go into patient history, medical history. When I talked to Dr. Villanueva about this and why he did it, he said he does it because if you open the patient up, the more cooperative they are to you--and will be more likely to trust you. Very strategic kaayo.

Sure there have been some Filipino doctors that were very serious, pero they have to be given their work condition and their manner of work. Filipino Surgeons are extremely strict and almost unapproachable, but their record in successful surgical procedures are impressive.

I seriously think that the way Philippine Medical Schools teach medicine is superior to American methodology.

Totally biased and has no basis at all. If the Filipino Doctor was as impudent as she claims in that T.V show, then the United States wouldn't be importing Filipino Doctors.

Suffice to say, there are over 20,000 Filipino Physicians in the United States. I think this fact bears witness to the high quality of our Doctors.

The T.V show 'Desperate House Wives' has been already cancelled due to lack of funding. Filipino doctors are still and continue to care and treat American patients to this day. And thousands of us Filipino-Americans are in medical school to continue the legacy of our Filipino compatriots.

You know what made me smile? In the interview I had with one medical admission director he asked me if I was a Filipino. I answered, 'Yes', and he warmly commented, "Filipinos and Indians constitute a considerable amount of students in American Medical Schools."

Racist comments like that of Ms. Hatcher is a testament to the kinds of derogatory comments we still have to go through. But I view people like her as mere pebbles. One simply just needs to walk over pebbles. Or shove them aside. :)

That comment of Teri Hatcher was a result of her being idiotic - or the scriptwriter's ignorance.

i suspect that the scriptwriter has some axe to grind to a certain filipino doctor that's why the script was made.

Well, that's too bad!  The scriptwriter may have wanted to stir the viewers but in the end, it only showed how ignorant he or she was.
